so, i purchased the little green Clem Smith Jr prototype for my fiance (right as i was halfway through building up a 1990 trek 520 for her. will be selling it, if anyone is interested). i, for one, am very happy that there is a budget model available, as dropping 3k on another riv bike wasnt gonna be in the cards for me for a long time. a few tig welds and a powdercoat seems like a totally fair compromise. i think and hope that there will be a lot of people in the same gray area financial bracket who would be elated to have a rivendell. anyway, now that it is on the way, im excitedly curious about the whole protovelo thing. mainly... -are the prototypes and the actual models made in the same place, or do they have a prototype builder knock out the first few until all refinements are done, then it moves to a factory? -follow up: anyone know who will be making the clems? -is there a way to get the specs/geometry for prototypes? not that i'd ever need it. i just like knowing everything about the bikes we have. im kind of into them, but i think she wants to ditch them. In terms of value, rare things are usually more valuable than common things. While no Rivendell would be considered common, anything Protovelo says one of only a few ever made. [RBW] Re: Protovelo questions
first of all, good job on the little green Clem! Here's what I know from my own experience... I think currently the appaloosa's have been made by Mark Nobilette. Not sure about where production will go for the appaloosas or the clems. I got some spec's on my protobleriot (max. tire size) from Riv. But I remember at some point, them saying if you gotta ask a million spec questions, you might be too nervous or something to that effect. Mostly, don't expect the production model for a proto price. That said, from my experience, do expect a riv. (I am the same way about trying to get all the spec's) Not sure what to say about removing the proto decals and then reselling. I think if you are the bonafide owner, you can reorder decals for the same bike. Putting other-model riv decals (excpet maybe Resurrectio decals) on an inappropriate bike would be way way way off limits. A misrepresentation at a bare minimum. For example, the Rivendell decal means that the bike is a custom Rivendell. I'm sure that Riv guards those decals like they guard their headbadges: under penalty of death do you get one without being the documented owner of the bike and then I think you need to believably make the case that your bike has lost its decal/headbadge. Grant's post about the Bridgestone badge evidences his philosophy on badge etiquette. As for my own proto, I love having that designation. People are generally quite curious about it, which is fun. Hope this is helpful. Again, congrat's! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Naked cotton tape
In lieu of taking a strong position in cotton tape commodities, I had to relegate my preference of the hand offered by the bare cloth and shellac. It was for the all-weather capacity and lack of room to tote replacement rolls on a long, super-fly cross country test ride of my Rambouillet. To note: the perspiration or rain-moistened hand actually has an active grip with the shellacked surface, polishing it over time. Improved sensation of the bike's behavior was why I wasn't applying cork or plastic padded tape or hiding squishy things under the cotton. The well-fit bike took care of those issues without bodge. The latest listings for those bars at Rivbike.com mention that you should use the stronger aluminum version for off-road riding. IMO if your off-road involves plonking along in gravel just like you would on pavement, this is not the dirt riding Riv is referring to. I'm sure they're talking about singletrack with bumps and logs and whatnot, at which point an Alba is a poor design anyway. I want flat or Moustache Bars for that kind of stuff. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Noodle to Albatross Conversion - Final Questions
I just finished placing my order. I decided to go with the CroMo Albatross bars. While I was at it, I ordered a pair of Miesha's cork grips and two rolls of brown Newbaum's tape. This tape will, I hope, match my well-loved B-17 honey saddle, which is looking pretty brown these days. My only hesitation was on the brake levers. I'm going to be patient and wait for the Tektro Mountain Levers - which were the ones that I really wanted - to come back in stock. The ETA for the levers in late March? which concerns me a bit. However, since I live in the Buffalo, NY area (and don't like to ride on snow-covered roads) I am going to risk missing a ride or two in exchange for the brake levers that I am after. I am quite excited about this project. I think that the new bars will bring new life to my old Trek. More importantly, I think that this setup will distinguish that bike from my other bikes, which both feature Noodles. Thanks for your help. I will post pictures when the project is completed. I'm not sure the 52 and 53 qualify as smaller/women's bikes. I'm 5-7-ish with a 78 pbh, and both of these are too big for me according to the site's recommended pbh ranges. I know we're talking about cotton here, but on my more modern builds (all my vintage builds get cotton) I switched to Fizik Microtex. It's amazing stuff. Me too! Though I'm gathering that they wont have quite the tire clearance that the Clem and Mystery Bikes had. I'll probably end up buying a Clem in the meantime anyway, and seeing if the lack of clearance bothers me. Funny thing is that the price isn't the most compelling part of the bike to me by a long shot. I prefer the cromo bars as I found the aluminum bars to be a little stiffer. I had problems with them staying in place when I hit a bump with my weight on them. They rotated down on me. First, given that I have absolutely no concern about the weight of this bike, is there any reason NOT to to buy the $68 CrMo Albas that Riv offers? Since this bike will be ridden on roads only, I can't see any reason to spend $90 to buy the lighter and stronger heat treated aluminum version of the Alba. [RBW] FS: Racks! Front rear / Tubus Bruce Gordon
Hi, I have several front and rear racks I'd like to sell, along with quite a bit of other stuff as well. I was laid off effective last Friday, so suddenly my desire to convert my excess bike bits into cash is much increased! BTW, if anyone knows of a position for an experienced operations research professional (extensive background in mathematical optimization and simulation), please let me know! Racks currently on offer (prices do not include shipping, which will be at cost and can be determined after packing): 1) New, never installed, Bruce Gordon front lowrider rack, as seen here: http://www.bgcycles.com/racks.html Unopened bag of attachment hardware still taped to the rack. One of the finest lowrider racks available, nicer construction than Tubus IMO. $185 on BG's website or $145 from Jack's garage. 2) Used Bruce Gordon rear rack with all mounting hardware. Rack itself is very good condition, but the generic mounting bolts are not stainless and are no longer shiny. See it here: http://www.bgcycles.com/new-page-14/ $208 from Bruce Gordon, say $130. 3) New Tubus Cosmo stainless rear rack (with low-ish rider mounts). Installed on a Waterford touring bike I was building, then removed without ever having a pannier mounted on it. Original version of the Cosmo, so looks like this: http://www.therandonneeshop.com/medi...ubus_Cosmo.jpg http://www.therandonneeshop.com/media/238/Tubus_Cosmo.jpg Included is the $13 Tubus Lower Rack Mounting Kit, which can be used to position the rack slightly further back to increase clearance for heels or disc brakes, or help on bikes with normal length chainstays. $210+$13=$223 is cheapest online price I see; say $170 for everything. I'll be posting gobs more stuff in the near future. Next up will be a collection of jerseys, including wool by Rapha and Castelli. [RBW] Re: Renewing a Canvas and Leather Bag
Dear Eric, The Berthoud bags aren't waxed. The differential fading on the canvas is part of its charm. However, the leather should be kept treated. I've historically used sno-seal or Obenaufs. Blow-dry the bag enough to heat the leather a bit, then carefully apply to the piping and edging. You'll probably need a small brush to do it accurately, and throwing the treatment in a double boiler or (carefully) in the microwave to melt it in its plastic tin doesn't hurt either. Try to keep it off of the canvas, as it will stain. A Berthoud bag will be waterproof as long as the top vinyl map pocket cover isn't cracked and you're using fenders to keep road lime from saturating the bag, and it will be highly water resistant otherwise. I've never soaked anything carried in one in over twenty years of using their products. Any competent tack shop can replace the window material, which will eventually crack in cold weather if used outside year-round. For maximum aesthetic appeal you'll want to use an awl and re-sew the top yourself to match the existing holes in the leather. Unfortunately, the Berthoud bags apparently don't use UV-stabilized vinyl, and their material choice seems to prioritize flexibility over durability. There are marine-supply places that sell boat window material (Strataglass is one brand that I've used) that is very, very durable for cycling conditions, if a hassle to sew with, and I'd seek out a scrap once the window cracks. Typical fabric-store stuff will not last more than a year or two years, and a Berthoud is a long-term investment. Re: [RBW] Re: Naked cotton tape
Back in the day, the pros of course started each stage of a multi-day race with fresh, white tape. You obviously need a mechanic and a soigneur to take care of those things for you. —Eric N campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org Blog: http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com Twitter: @campyonlyguy On Mar 2, 2015, at 11:08 AM, Anton Tutter atut...@gmail.com wrote: Agreed, I like the feel of untreated cotton, and agree that it becomes grungy fast. RE: [RBW] Someone buy one of those long bikes!
Emphatic +1. I’m one of the early adopters who bought this bike at $4,000+, and it is one of the smoothest, most comfortable bikes I’ve ever ridden. But the handling is still very responsive. Plus the offbeat appearance, with the asymmetrical tentacular midstays, is a great conversation-starter. Great deal! Oh my goodness they are a steal! I rode the 52 and it changed my thinking about a custom by about 180 degrees! I couldn't stop smiling! If you've thought about a longbike and are are short to medium height, GRAB it. I just saw the bigger blue frame-only on the website for $1100 but it disappeared within the time it took to begin this post. Someone be bold and make a home for one! As an aside, I bought a proto frame way back in 2007—a proto bleriot. Set it up as a single. I love that bike and would have no reservations whatsoever about getting a proto; I mean the discount is crazy good and the product...it's still a Riv, rest assured. My proto compared to my Saluki has longer chainstays (yay) and less tire clearance (boo but still takes a 38 with fenders so not a big boo). Here are images of me on the proto in 2013 and my proto-inspired custom in 2015! Anyway, why is the 52 still sitting on the website? -rcw -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
