Have you checked that the wires were (and still are) correctly assembled into

Re: [RBW] S3X hub for one of my Rivs; particular question about QR-type shifting setup.

2015-03-22 Thread Philip Williamson
I'm with Eric. I simply found that for my riding, I preferred the direct drive
feel of a fixed wheel more than the convenience of onboard shifting.

As far as an easy on and off, I used my seat stay rack boss and a longer bolt
to mount the thumb shifter. Pictures in my flickr and blog (search S3X), but I
don't trust the phone to save the msg while I find them.

"I dunno. If everyone on these lists was "just riding" the discussions
would get stale really fast. "

Will: You're right about that. My idea was that, amongst our collection
of bikes, we should have one bike that was a "just ride" bike. Heck, I'm a
minimalist & I've got 3 bikes, all of which have perfectly good
justification.

I've learned a tremendous amount on this list about bicycle technology, and
of course have my own hot button topics I love to over-think. It's great
good fun as well as educational. Hopefully a Madison area Legolas will
surface, looking for a new home.

I think the 720's are great if you swap pads to Kool Stop. The CX-70 are

straddle wire thing but I couldn't use it on the front because of the nitto

Edwin:

Your hodge-podge of luggage seemed to work out all right. Good on you for
not being held back by not knowing what you need. The best lessons are the
ones we learn by doing. No doubt you found things you didn't need and
others that you'd like to have had. The important things is you know you
can go out for a few days & enjoy yourself with what you had.

If you're thinking of a front rack, look at the Tubus Tara. Tubus makes
all sorts of adapters so it may be possible to bolt it on even though your
fork doesn't have enough eyelets. The Nitto big front rack that Rivendell
sells can also be fitted up with clamps.

[RBW] Narrow Wide Chain Ring on Triple

2015-03-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
I mentioned this in a different thread, but it seems like it deserves it’s own
thread (and has been discussed here various places before, which is how I knew
it might work).

My middle chain ring is now a 38t Raceface narrow wide (only took me four times
assembling and disassembling it to get all the recessed and pin bits going the
correct ways! Sardonic grin). I am not running a front derailer, so positioning
the chain to match the narrow-wide is easy with manual shifting, and I only
shift to the 24t when bikepacking singletrack.

Initial test ride (ten miles on singletrack and dirt road, half up, half down,
with a few steepish climbs to crank hard on, and lots of rough trail and
washboarded fast descents. chain never bounced off (it did with my old rings on
the rough stuff). We’ll see how it goes on this weeks bikepacking trip — mostly
dirt roads likely won’t need my 24t.

Thanks for opening me up to this possibility. The chain feels more solid than
the old ring (but an exact replacement could also feel more solid being new).

With abandon,
Patrick

Hmmm…. it has a down tubed decal, but I don't know if it's an art deco one.
I do know the production # is 84, according to the seller. So far wheels
built, with a cluster; BB, headset, seat post and triple Sugino installed.
Sitting on my workbench (which I'm sad to say is NOT in the house) are
derailleurs, Dura-Ace 9 speed shifters, Paul Thumbies, and the stem. Next
paycheck, handlebars, brakes and levers.

[RBW] Re: I test rode the Clem

" Who cares what butt lengths you have when that's what you are doing on
your bike? "

Bill, that's a brilliant closing to an excellent post. The idea the Clem
is the "just ride" bike from Rivendell seems spot on. Perhaps we should
all have one bike that's our "just ride" bike.

[RBW] Re: Chains do not like me.

2015-03-22 Thread dougP
Patrick:

First of all, congratulations on turning what would be a disaster (to me)
into "just part of the adventure". As they say, attitude is everything.

FWIW, you may be a candidate for stainless steel chainrings, given your
riding conditions.

Climate is a major factor in chain life. From posts here & on other sites,
riders in wet climates can blow thru chains in a few months, while here dry
SoCal a chain can go well over a year. If you get into dirt and road grit,
it's like grinding compound on the cassette and chainrings. And it's weird
how visible cog wear seems to appear all of a sudden. Once the drivetrain
start slipping and skipping, a lot of stuff is worn out.

I know riders who love to squeeze that list mile out of components, but as
someone pointed out, this can land you in the ER. Since I've taken to
replacing chains every 2-3k miles, cassettes & rings last much longer. A
chain is $20-$30 part that can be changed out in a few minutes in the
comfort of home. After you do it a couple of times, you can even wiggle
the pesky power link apart without tools.

Yay Kellie! Love to see those bronze Saluki badges, which were a special
option. Mine has a pewter headbadge; I think it was maybe $25 more or
something like that to have the all metal badges. It's way cool to have a
Saluki—the original Hilson and the first top-tubed 650B! (I think the honor
of the very first 650B goes to the Glorious/Wilbury mixtes, right?)

Looks like yours is the original ~peagreen color; does it also have the
first-generation art-deco decal on the downtube?

[RBW] Re: Clem info for the Tall and Long

2015-03-22 Thread Garth

For clarity sake , standover height is always measured in the middle of
top tube. When comparing models you must take into account bottom bracket
drop also . I doubt the Clem is going to have as much drop as the Bombadil
or Hunqa for example , probably more like the Cheviot.

All in all, as the Clem is for 45mm tires and above , which I was not
aware or until the presale blug, it's not what I really really want and if
it's not then I let it go . Something like the Cheviot appears more to my
liking , as if the specs are accurate it would likely be more like what I
DO want :) Or I'll just get custom. I'm good with 50mm max. tires, even
40's Vittoria Hypers which I have on my Bomba, they "sing" on the road:) I
really don't like super fat tires anyways as I know of none I'd *want* to
ride on . If they made super size Hypers that'd be great, but they don't.
I'm at a point in life where I only want what I Love , so buying something
like a big bulky frame "just to see if it may work" and if not sell later,
nah ... been there and done it. Not again.

Inspecting my cogs (look good) and chainrings today, it looks like I broke

Replacing the 36t with a narrow-wide ring since I don't have a FD, and a
new 24t ring. Looking forward to seeing how that setup runs bikepacking

I think the body of the dropout is plain steel and thus can be welded or
brazed in any fashion, the stainless piece is an insert that is probably
silver brazed in to reinforce the dropout, and look good! My wife's Heron

[RBW] Re: Chains do not like me.

2015-03-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
Andy, I access it via the paved road that connects with Rampart Range Road
out of Woodland Park, then take either Rainbow Gulch trail or Schubarth
(sp?) Road to the Reservoir. In summer and fall the trail around the
reservoir is a popular MTB trail, all the lycra and full shock absorption
you could ever want. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Chains do not like me.

2015-03-22 Thread ascpgh
Wow. That's a part fail I've not seen. Had lots of those Shimano snap-off
pin connected chains fail by plates pulling off, over those despicable
things. The abrasive slurry mud of my MTBing era and the winters of
commuting have provided insight on chains, mostly to have a full coverage
front fender with a low hanging flap to keep things clean and to stick with
regular care and measurement of Sram (nee Sachs) chain, replacing without
complaint as needed.

Patrick, what route do you take up to Rampart? I've been up there may times
on foot from the east, up the West Monument Creek trail. Nice to know of
another access not limited by access from the USAFA grounds. Love the steep
sides of that route and the tops of tall spruce rooted far below that you
are among on the way up.

Thin wool caps. Wool keeps you cool when it's hot and warm when it's cool.
(and when it's wet, like in rain) Like this one:

You are one of many who can testify that Keven is great at putting you on
the right bike, set up the right way. I first encountered him when ordering
my Ram, way back when. It's still as comfortable as the day I got it.
