[RBW] FS 52cm light Blue Riv. Clementine Frame only Preorder

2015-06-09 Thread Abcyclehank
Looking for someone to buy my Preordered frame to build as you choose, so I can
buy Miesha's Sweet Betty. Come on Riv Group help two great individuals out.
Trust me the fine folks at Riv. World Headquarters can accommodate the
transaction. Previously they helped myself and
Riv Chica Warrior transition a Cheviot that never reached Michigan for her
friend Erin in Minnesota.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson
Spring Lake, Michigan

P.S. N-2 extra extra large bike reduction going swimmingly. Sold 1 + traded 1
= received 1 + Bought 1. Net n+-0.

[RBW] Re: ID or suggest front rack for Betty Foy?

2015-06-09 Thread D Yat
Yes, that is the link to the Cheviot with the front rack I forgot to
include in my original post.

Thanks for all the insightful commentary and for giving me ideas.

Since the Cheviot & Betty Foy front fork has attachment points at the
midpoint and tip, then the rack might as well use them.

Thanks again.

Hi guys -

I didn't want to let this post fade without letting y'all know how much I
enjoyed your responses - especially the cajoling, encouragement, and
stories 'bout smoking'. While I'm still inhaling, I''m also now riding the
bike to work - about a seven mile commute each way from Silver Spring into
DC - which is significantly diminishing my ciggy intake!

I am also thoroughly enthused by the cries of "ride on" regarding the
boscos, and enjoyed the references to chocolate milk, molten metal, and
plain common sense.

You guys are cool...

Re: [RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-06-09 Thread Hugh Smitham
Drew,

I'm heading to Vancouver Island BC for a two week tour. I pine for the PNW
and further North, VI has been on my list.

Next year, I'm planning on doing the Oregon Outback like Mark just
finished and then some tours in the Sierra's.

I'm liking the Six Moons Designs Tent tarps for lightweight compressible
shelters. There are other manufacturers out there making ultra-lightweight
shelters but then the cost skyrockets. When I toured the California coast I
used a REI two person tent. I ditched the tent and used the rain fly &
footprint. I found on the coast that bugs weren't an issue just the dew.
This year on my tour I'm considering the same with my Marmont Eos1, ditch
the tent for the fly & footprint and bring my Titanium Goat bivy (7oz).
That way I'll keep the weight & space at a minimum.

Here's my setup. Atlantis, small campee rack up front with basket & shop
sack clothes only to keep the weight at a minimum. Tubus low rider rack
with two small Carradice panniers usually empty but used to carry food &
beer into camp. Acorn handle bar bag for the stuff you grab most often,
keys, wallet, camera ect...

Rear:

Medium Sackville Saddle sack, carrying synthetic 45f degree sleeping bag,
sleeping pad, pillow, fly & bivy, cook gear stove. Supported by the Nitto
R14 top rack.

Tail Winds,

~Hugh

Re: [RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, I find that decently made nylon boxers -- loose, hi-rise -- make very
comfortable riding togs -- nothing comes between me and my Target nylon
boxers.

The nice thing about these is that, tho' they will stink and within 24
hours if you ride much in them, they are very easy to wash and very quick
to dry. And I daresay that 3 pr of these will cost less than 1 pr of decent
merino undershorts.

In other news, I've found merino (will have to try my other lesser-wool
jerseys) jerseys are quite comfortable in temps up to 86F or so with 30%
humidity or so. More on this as temps rise.

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
And I am not secretly and snidely asserting that retention is better*. If
no retention is proved to be more efficient, I'll drop my Keos and SPDs in
a NY minute.

But I *am* skeptical, since cycling and its related technology is after all
very mature, and foot retention dates back well over 100 years.

* I mean better in every way. Of course no retention has obvious benefits
in freedom of movement on the pedal.

My own take at the moment is that, like planing, high bars, wide bars, low
bars, narrow bars, wide saddles, narrow saddles, front loading, rear
loading, what have you, it is largely a matter of taste and riding style
and type.

Deacon: thanks.

To turn the question around (for everyone): what are the *advantages* of
riding no retention? I discount the reason given as "no need for special
shoes" since I certainly wouldn't be cycling fixed or off road no-retention
in Bass Weejuns on Tony Lamas or, for that matter, in Sperry Topsiders.

So, allowing that you are going to need special shoes of one sort or
another, what are the benefits? Perhaps there will be confirmation of the
study finding that no retention takes less energy, but leave that out for
the time being.

Re: [RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-06-09 Thread Hugh Smitham
Drew,

I've used the devold for a couple years now and only worn my first pair
out. They finally just disintegrated. I think they're worth every penny.

Mark,

Your clothing pack list is spot on. I on the other hand have a tendency to
overpack.

When I'm riding I really don't need much on as I'm generating lot's of
heat. Synthetic stretch shorts, devold wool (two pair to rotate) underwear,
wool socks, button down lightweight synthetic shirt and windbreaker.

Once off the bike for 1/2 hour I get really cold obviously depending on the
current ambient temp, I usually change into light wool long underwear
(which I'll sleep in ) wool socks (2nd pair), my knickers, synthetic
sweater, beanie and if really cool light glove liners. I also bring a short
sleeve wool base layer shirt as a back up for the button down.

I suppose I could ditch the base layer but it's so light weight and
compressible it's hard to leave it behind. Maybe the knickers are overkill
as well but they're also lightweight and fairly compressible.

I also bring cheap flip flops to shower in. Really dislike foot fungus.

The above is my clothing list for an up coming two week tour.

Tail Winds,

Doug,

Yep, no shortage of fun stops for eating and drinking. I recall in the
chzech Republic I even liked goulash again after the ride, meat with brown
sauce 2 meals a day got a little tiring during the week before. The beauty
of the nicely spaced european village is you can roll around fairly
unprepared, follow the signs to the next little center and usually find a
bar/restaurant/cafe or market ready to refuel you. Or just navigate by how
long you would like to ride before eating or taking a break. Most areas I
have ridden in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, france Belgium and Ireland,
have at least something every 10-25km, and even the tiniest of towns had
reasonable coffee. One big map that tells you where the towns are in space
coupled with the signs to the next town let you make fun loops of varying
unplanned sizes.

Dear Thomas Lynn,

"Fast enough to see" is a brisk walking pace with an SV-8 (or SONdelux)
and either a Cyo or an Edelux. Staggering around after an unpaved 300K is
not quite fast enough to get out of the flicker zone. The hubs with more
poles are better for high-draw use (so those of us who charge their
tricorders and other electronic paraphernalia while tootling along) and
bikepacking rally riders who push their steeds up long, babyheaded
singletrack climbs at night, though most of those I know use battery lights
to supplement their hub generator and recharge them with the lights off
during the day.

They'd last way longer than 3 days for sure. That was just how long I
decided to go before switching. I know many people who stick with one pair.
The Riv ones are probably 3 times thicker than the Mountain Equip. Co-op

[RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-06-09 Thread Mark Reimer
I just finished an 8 day tour across Washington and Seattle and had some
interesting observations regarding clothes

- I brought three t-shirts. I only ever wore one on the bike (merino
t-shirt, stayed dry while sweating). I'd often wear no shirt at all, which
was the most comfortable option. Then I had a cotton t-shirt I wore while
setting up camp and sleeping. Just nice to have a clean dry shirt to change
into. The third never left my bag. I should have stuck with two.

- I had two pairs of shorts - denim cutoffs (jorts!) and some looser
synthetics. The denim shorts were fantastic till it rained for two days.
The synthetics were great for drying out quickly. I could have stuck with
the single pair of synthetics. Though my riding buddy wore denim cutoffs
with no underwear for over a month of riding and loved every minute of it
though.

- Merino underwear. This is the MOST important thing I had! I wore the
striped MUSA underwear for up to three days in a row, then would wash and
change to my second pair. It's all I needed. I was dry, fresh, happy. I had
a third pair of cheaper and much thinner merino. I tried pulling them off
to change and they completely fell apart in my hands, hah! Pays to get
quality I guess.

- Socks - two pairs max needed. Merino wool to keep that foot stank out

- Merino wool sweater for the cool and/or moist days. (Seeing a trend? Wool
is the best!)

- thin gloves and a rain shell. That's all I needed for clothes. It was
enough to be clean, comfortable, and presentable if needed. Of course, your
standards may be higher than mine.

2015-06-09 Thread Eric
What a great ride!

I did it in 6 days on my Igleheart 29er. I couldn't image going any faster,
just the perfect mix of riding & fun.

I saw Stonehog out there & complimented on his Riv.

I believe I saw an Atlantis in Prineville but I was thinking I'd see alot
more based on the chatter on the group after last year's ride.

Anyways, I think I'm going to do this ride next year but before the mass
start. Maybe I'll see ya?

If you're a cold person, bring a down sweater. If you're warm person, or a
freshly landed meteorite as my wife calls me, down is overkill for the
coast, but windbreakers are a must.

On synthetics vs down or wool, I only feel cozy with down or wool.
Synthetics keep me from being cold, but I never feel cozy warm.

I know synthetic down substitutes say they keep you warm if they get wet,
but have you ever tried it in the wild? If getting wet is unavoidable, I
use fleece (or neoprene). Fleece you can shake out if drenched, but
synthetic downs not so much. And synthetic down substitutes have a short

[RBW] Re: Intelligent design dynamo hubs

2015-06-09 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I have an SP PV-8 hub on one Hillborne and a current-generation SON28 on
another Hillborne. I like them both just fine. I may end up getting another
dynamo'd wheel in the future and, barring near-future failure of the one I
have, will probably get another SP PV-8 just because it's >$150 cheaper.

If I were a generally faster rider I might've gotten an SP SV-8 (which I
think is the one intended to work with smaller wheels with higher typical
rotation rates. But I don't like the notion of worrying about going "fast
enough to see" when I have a choice.

I use them both with an Edelux II and find I have plenty of light when I
need it, even below 10mph. Off-the-cuff I can't tell whether one hub yields
more light than the other at the same speed. Nor can I tell that one is
more easy-rolling than the other. Sometimes I do feel that the SON28 is
rolls *smoother* but not necessarily *easier*. On both I can feel the
resistance when the light is on versus when the light is off. And for both
I *think* I can tell that they do not roll as easily as a non-dynamo hub
even when the light is off. But assuming that's true it's not nearly enough
to make me want to go back to a non-dynamo hub. I would consider going
back only if either becomes unreliable as a light source in the next few
thousand miles.

I got the SON28 simply because I suspected (and still suspect) that it will
last longer. With only hundreds of miles on each (all problem free) I can't
speak with experience on life expectancy. I'd've been very disappointed if
either had had issues before now. I prefer the SON28's connection style but
the SP's works fine also.

Thomas Lynn Skean

Of course after the test it was agreed that for racing, clipless is more

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-09 Thread Garth

It makes zero difference to me :) I ride on the flats, sometime spinning
sometimes mashing. Up the ubiquitous 20 something percent climbs , both
seated and standing , makes no difference to me . I wonder how I put up
with riding rock hard boards called cycling shoes for so long . My feet
have never slipped of my pedals Wellgo MG-1's and now I wear Croc slide
sandals .

As Clayton mention in his post, it takes undeterminable time for one to
adjust to riding in flat pedals, if ever. To just hop on a bike with flat
pedals(or vice versa) and called it a "test" really defeats the spirit of
the intention. Do I want the truth or not ?

This is an issue with no one but within oneself . What's good for me
? To extend that choice to others as if they ought to be doing it too ,
yes we've all done it in our enthusiasm for what we like . but truly to
each distinctively their own . These distinctions are ever cultivated and
celebrated :)

BTW, there is test on youtube by some well known British guys who had a
racer in a lab on rollers and tested him with flat pedals for any
physiological differences . They were essentially the same, with flat
pedals being slightly more efficient physically.

[RBW] Re: XSmall Sackville Saddle Bag ?

2015-06-09 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
The stiff olive or tan canvas retains its boxy shape after many miles. I
can not see *easily* into the bag but it isn't a problem for me. When I
ride without extra clothing the XS will hold what I take: general
flat-fixing stuff (tube/patches/levers/multi-tool; not a spare tire,
though) and normal keys/phone/wallet combination. Plus perhaps a snack or
two-if-they're-small. Any piece of clothing (even gloves) pushes me into
something larger.

Re: [RBW] Re: A Life Update

Thank God that I've been blessed with sturdy and injury free knees for 60
years, but I did recently start taking glucosamine hydrochloride in some
sulfur compound (big bottle from Costco) because my brother says it helps
his runners' knees and ankle joints.

I *think* I've experienced less of an annoying pain in my left shoulder,
and my neck seems less stiff when riding in the hooks.

Now, I may well be imagining all this; but this is what I *think* I've
experienced.

FWIW, since glucosamine is recommended for cartilage and knees.

[RBW] Re: Contemplating which route to take with a Sam, budget build or riv build kit

2015-06-09 Thread hsmitham
While at Riv were the clems available to ride?

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-clemsmith.htm

For the price of the HIllborne frame you get a complete bike ready to roll!
I know it's not the Hillborne, but considering the evolution of riv bikes
I'd say all the good that's in the Hillborne most likely can be found in
the Clem Jr. And it looks great! And I know the parts Riv hung on it will
serve you well for many miles, then as others have mentioned replace with
higher end parts if that's your penchant.

+1 on the stem mounted shifters, I know that's the direction I'm leaning
with my Hilsen, Albatross bars & those shifters for me will be a sweet
spot. The IRD are particularly beautiful, I love how the cables just loop
efficiently to the down tube.

Will's Sam is how I'd build it up, tho with those shifters I mentioned
above.

[RBW] Re: Contemplating which route to take with a Sam, budget build or riv build kit

2015-06-09 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
I recently built a bike with 8-speed XT bits that were gathered in a
leisurely fashion, mostly from the bay, along with this and that from the
list and from my boxes. Each individual transaction seemed cheap, and I
was careful never to total the costs, therefore the build was cheap. QED.

Actually, I *think* I'm at $400 or slightly north for all the parts. I
scored a really, really cheap deal on some new wheels (Shimano/Mavic Open,
which needed touching up) on the bay, which included shipping, and maybe
the sweetest part was a beautiful XTR seat post I got for $15 because of
some scratches on the back, which are completely covered by the seat bag.
I think that was a successful build. $600 all in with the frame, thanks to
a lister in LA who picked up the frame and shuttled it to San Diego a few
weeks later. Great experience. $600 isn't throw-away coin, but I think
there's value there. What's the total cost of the Riv build?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pbridge1300/16899727095/in/datetaken/
complete with wrong-side brake levers ... I'll have to swap them one of
these days.

2015-06-09 Thread Philip Williamson
If you still have one of those ~$1000 bikes, you could move some or all of
the parts over to the new frame.
Then you can spend time finding parts to put the old frame back on the
road, or simply sell the leftovers.

If you don't have a spare bike, there's always Craigslist. Any size bike
will work as a parts donor. You need to be a little careful on component
sizes, but it's a learning experience.

Being Frugal is great! There are a few things I didn't really think through
or know about when I built my Sam 9 months ago.
I wish I would of built the front wheel with a dyno hub,so I could add
a head and tail light later. I don't commute or ride much at night but now
days I like to have daytime running lights ( hate dealing with
batteries). Now it's a winter project to put on the list..
But isn't that have the fun of it...tinkering with your bike and fine
tuning it to your liking. Somethings like bags, or saddles, handle bars, and
tires you have to try to know if you like it.
I think the people at Rivendell have it down to a science and are very
helpful when starting a build.
Getting perspectives from the friendly experienced people on this site is a
big plus.

Looks like Jan got his first production prototypes for two new anticipated tire
models. Even fatter road/gravel tires in 559x54 and 584x48.

https://janheine.wordpress.com/

Now you need two new bikes to fit these tires!

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: Advice and suggestions for custom dirt/pavement allrounder?

2015-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Incidentally, one of my theoretical design benchmarks or gauges or
touchstones is the Rivendell Atlantis. I'd have something built with road
bike tubing (bowing to the builder's recommendations for durability).

I see that the model with a 57 cm top tube is the 56 cm, which comes with
26" tires. Would it be possible, do you think, to build something with
similar handling (I am assuming that this Riv model keeps the signature Riv
handling of stability and "unjerky" turn in) but with a 58 cm c-c st and
room for 65s with fenders? What would you have to give up to get this? I
can accept TCO, for example, and don't mind an upjutter stem or sloping tt.

Or would I be better off with smaller wheels?

The Tektro sidepulls aren't too bad once you replace them with Kool Stops.
I might upgrade to Paul centerpulls, but Pauls are also 4 times the price.

The Tektro CR720s are awesome with Kool Stops ($15 upgrade). Almost as good
as my Paul Touring Cantis, again a fraction of the price. Also easier for
me to service if I'm out on the trails. Also has road-type cartridges which
are easy to replace. Pauls also needs an extra wrench, which some people

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: Advice and suggestions for custom dirt/pavement allrounder?

2015-06-09 Thread Patrick Moore
Mike Schiller: thanks for this; beautiful bikes btw.

We'll see what has to give. I can live with TCO - have in the past, even
with fixed gears in urban traffic, so it's not impossible. But I'm
confident that Chauncey can come up with the best solution.

Mike (Shaljian): thanks for the additional information on the Jones Plus.
Your high opinion, and the other positive reports, make me take it
seriously.

I plan to have Chauncey do the build, but I'll mention the Jones Plus to
him.

I wish I had the money and time to try all sorts of options, but I have to
stick with what I am most familiar with and can afford, and with what I
know -- or think I know -- works for my type of riding. But the comments
certainly do provide additional grist for the mental mill, and have made me
"fine tune" my own analyses and the resulting goal, which is now leaning
ever more toward the "road bike" side of the table. If this means,
eventually, 650B, or even 559 (what with the new Compass tires), so be it.

So please keep the ideas coming!

[RBW] Re: Contemplating which route to take with a Sam, budget build or riv build kit

2015-06-09 Thread Ginz
Ah, ok then. The only parts on the list I would consider upgrading are
brakes (if using cantis, not crazy about the tektros but they are ok) and
the wheelset. If Phil Wood or XT or something a little nicer isn't in the
budget, then that's fine too. Derailleurs on a friction-shifted bike
matter little to me. The rest of the stuff on the bike is honestly fine
unless you are going with Paul, Phil Wood, etc. The rest of the stuff is
Nitto, so how can I complain!

To summarize -- the hubs the brakes are the only things in the build kit
that truly make me think

[RBW] Re: Jan reports on new Compass tire prototypes

2015-06-09 Thread Jan Heine
Rim width matters much less with very supple tires, since the sidewalls
don't hold up the bike. So you need to run somewhat higher pressures, but
the supple casing still gives you much better comfort and traction (and
speed).

Cyclocross and pro mountain bikers run tubulars on rims that have a very
narrow effective width - the tire is not supported at all on the sides. And
yet they perform great - the fact that they are winning races in
disciplines where bike handling is of crucial importance says it all.

With stiffer tires, you want to run lower pressures (the tires already are
harsh), so the sidewalls get tasked with holding up the bike. Then, and
only then, does rim width make a big difference, as it either allows the
tire to stand on the sidewall (wide rim making the sidewalls horizontal),
or the sidewall simply folds (narrow rim making the sidewall curved).

[RBW] Re: Jan reports on new Compass tire prototypes

2015-06-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
In the linked blog post he indicated that he installed them on a 23mm rim
and reports the width. He says he's been riding on them and thinks they
are awesome. He's said a wider rim would make them wider, so adequacy will
be in the eye of the beholder, I think. If you wanted to run them super
soft, say under 20psi, I bet you'd be more likely to call a 23mm rim
inadequate. Jan ran them at rock-hard 28psi ;-)

The EL 650bx50 sounds dreamy.
Has Jan weighed in on whether a 23mm rim is adequate for a tire this wide?
