[RBW] Re: New Bike Day!

2016-01-27 Thread Daniel Woods
Thanks for the amazing introduction, Amit. And thank you Eric for the
amazing wheels!!!

The Bleriot is a game changer. It really is. Having said that, I absolutely
love my Motobecane and I intend to keep it.

My being forced into cycling as part of my move out here to the West Coast
has undoubtedly changed my life for the better. 3 years later and 20 lbs
lighter I am a full-fledged ride-aholic.

It is an incredible feeling to have such a sweet ride. Thank you all for
your warm reception. I am so grateful to be part of this club!

Re: [RBW] Mystery Science Question

2016-01-27 Thread Eric Norris
I have SP hubs on two bikes, and have never had this happen. Are you sure the
quick release is tight enough? I'm not sure why the connector would rotate
backwards like this, but that's the first thing I would check.

I'm also concerned that your front wheel isn't sitting in the fork ends
correctly. Based on your photos, it looks like it's a few millimeters out from
where it should be. I'd look into that as well--perhaps the springs on the
skewer are somehow preventing the wheel from fully engaging in the fork ends,
which might have something to do with the rotation?

popular with the gravel crowd in my neck of the woods. The new tubeless 700x36

Re: [RBW] Re: favorite mixed terrain tires, winter edition

2016-01-27 Thread Tim Gavin
I have 700 x 38 Bontrager CX0 tires on my carbon 'cross bike, and they're
excellent. They roll really fast yet have decent grip on the edges. Like
many supple/knobby tires, the tread wears out relatively quickly, though.

I picked up some 700 x 38 Challenge Gravel Grinder (race 120 tpi) tires as
spares, but since I picked up Dave N's Roadeo they'll go on that bike
first. They're light weight and reported to roll really well.

The new Schwalbe G-One comes in a 700 x 38 size as well. Looks tempting.

I also swapped away a bullmoose bosco bar (from my mystery bike) but only in

It never gets that bad here in Portland but the last time we had a freak

2016-01-27 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
It's really nice, I just dont wear it anymore. I am a 38 in a fitted suit
jacket, but despite this being a small, it fits pretty roomy. I could wear
it OVER a suit. By todays slim fit standard, this would be a large. I used
it as a winter overcoat of sorts, usually with a shirt and sweater layered
and it's good for that.

I got it at Structure quite a long time ago. Not even sure if that store is
still around. It was $250 at the time. Leather is heavy and supple and took
on an awesome patina.

For reference, I am 5'9" and @ 160lbs. Wear a 15 1/2 x 32/33 dress shirt.
The coat is a drop shoulder style, and the sleeves fall to the first
knuckle on my thumb with only a tee shirt. Plenty of room in the chest.

I figured $75 and shipping

[RBW] Snowy s24o, sleeping under the full moon

2016-01-27 Thread Mark Reimer
With the forecast unseasonably warm over the weekend, figured it was time
to go camping. The overnight low was -9C, daytime high of +1C. In January!

We decided to ride to the mouth of a small river in a park about 45 minutes
outside of the city. We began on the frozen Red River, cautiously coasting
past ice skaters. Zero traction here, don't touch the brakes! We stuck to
mostly single-track along the river banks or quiet side roads, making the
ride out quite enjoyable. Once we hit the park, we found some glorious
snow-packed and twisty single track that led us to a fallen tree on the
river ice. Perfect camp spot for the night. The fallen tree would provide
us some shelter from snowmobile traffic, if there was any. You never know
when someone drunk and speeding at 150km/h might come along in your sleep...

At night the clouds blew off, and we were treated to a clear silvery full
moon, so bright it woke everyone up. We admired our camp spot bathed in the
moonlight for a while, then back to sleep.

Compared to my last outdoor winter s24o, this time I was substantially
warmer. I slept soundly and couldn't imagine being more comfortable
honestly. A layer of snow on the ice provided a soft surface to sleep on,
and the riverbank sheltered us from the wind. All in all it was possibly my
favourite s24o I've ever done.

Cheers!

Riv note - This was my first ride after treating the Atlantis with Fluid
Film frame saver. So far so good. I also rode with Thunder Burts again
(2.1") and they were fantastic.

2016-01-27 Thread hsmitham
Mark,

You're intrepid. I was in a conversation yesterday with a fellow and he was
remarking how cold it was! I exclaimed it wasn't that cold, he said when he
leaves for work it's in the 40's and I mentioned that I knew of a guy who
winter bike camps in 15ºF. I thought you'd done this same type of thing in
-4ºF? Anyway 40's here in SoCal is cold but not really that back especially
when the high is in the mid 60's.

I love your snowy camping scenes and description. Keep the adventures
coming.

Best Regards,

~Hugh

[RBW] Note to self, cold weather and pedal installation.

2016-01-27 Thread Fred Craven
Last night, well yesterday, two things arrived. My new VP-001 Pedals and My
RR44. Yay!

The Reader is fun, it's nice to have a throwback to the days of newsletters
that are printed.

Now to the pedals. I purchased them because I need some more support for my
foot. The historically wonderful, and most awesome, Campy Record pedals are
awesomely awesome, but there isn't much support for my non-cleated feet. To
make matters more interesting/challenging I have short wide feet that angle
out--they always have. Yep, I have duck feet. Small duck feet, but duck
feet just the same. So, I got the VP-001 in hopes that they would do me
well.

Of course I was excited to install them, but they simply didn't want to go
in. I got them in the threads, but wow were they tight.
.
.
It was only later that realized that SCIENCE RULES.
The bike was in the cold garage, and
the pedals were in the warm house.
When I went to install them

I'm looking forward to giving them an actual ride.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-27 Thread Tim Wood
Thanks Zed, maybe I'll play around with the tire pressure. Like I said it only
happens no handed and at very specific speeds, I'd estimate around 30-40km/hr,
so it's a pretty rare scenario and it's easy to correct.

Nice decal design btw!

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-27 Thread Zed Martinez
Thanks, Tim. And hey, for better or worse I consider 'no hands' to be the
fifth really good hand position on my albastches, a habit I picked up from
my Simcoe roadster which is so stable and so limited in hand grips that it
became habit for me to ride long stretches of the trail out here just
leaning back. But still, those are some pretty good speeds, I think 40kmph
is about as fast as I've been able to get my Clem up to period in the
winter out here, and that was just for a few seconds on a downhill. I don't
think I'd want to be taking that no-hands anyway ;)

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-01-27 Thread Zed Martinez
Glad to see you finally got the rack sorted, Tim! Sorry to hear about your
girl and hope things are getting better. Sounds like it was a fun ride,
though. Wish I could help you more on the wobble thing... my 52cm with rack
only does the usual wobble at low speeds, and it cleans up as it goes. I
did have problems with more at one point and learned the front on mine is
fairly sensitive to tire pressure and pushing that up 5psi resolved that.
And I've also found adding my front panniers--even empty-- will clean up
some normal wobble, but made wheel flop correction if I oversteered a
problem. It tended to compound itself rather than correct itself, but I was
using a wheel stabilizer back then and those problems are probably just
that.

Hope you get it figured out though.
