I have a Rawlands demi- porteur rack on the way for my Sam with centerpulls.
I was assured by Rawlands that the rack will work with a spacer washer to
clear the headset...we'll see.
They also said the Rawlands is good for 22LBS.

RE: [RBW] Re: Favorite Front Racks and Baskets forAll-Rounders/Atlantis/etc?

2017-01-30 Thread Jon Schultz
Oops, I meant my rack will be going on my Salsa Marrakesh.

Clearing the headset should be doable. You can put spacers behind the tab. My
issue was there no way to adjust the caliper brake relative to the rack in the
direction I needed.

I'm surprised Soma went with welded struts. Replaceable struts allow longer
struts for reaching lower mounts commonly found on touring and commuting bikes.
My ideal rack design would be adjustable at both mounting points.

I just received the Rawland demi porteur rack, and tried to install it on my
Rosco. I was able to add a spacer to get it to clear the headset, but there is
no way to add a spacer to clear the brake cable housing barrel. The rack will
be going on my salsa mariachi instead.

Re: [RBW] Re: Extension bar for the German Mirror?

2017-01-30 Thread Tim Gavin
I prefer a different German mirror, the Busch & Muller Cyclestar.

They're much more durable than Riv's German mirror (I've broken three of
those), and they have a glass mirror surface that doesn't scratch as
easily. The hardware is mostly metal instead of plastic.

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/mirrors.php
https://www.bike-discount.de/en/shop/mirrors-58/brand-busch_%2B_mueller

They have two sizes of mirror:
901 models are 55 mm (2")
903 models are 81 mm (3")
And 4 mount variants:
901, 903 have a long curved bar
901/1, 903/1 have a short, straight bar
901/2, 903/2 have just a bar-end mount
901/3, 903/3 have a short, curved bar

Except the 901/2 and 903/2, they all include both bar-end and band-clamp
base mounts.

[RBW] Which bike for hippie music?

2017-01-30 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
In June I'll be heading west from KC to combine my two great passions, music
and cycling. I'm seeing Dead and Company in Mountain View, CA, Salt Lake City,
and Boulder, CO. So, which Riv to take? I will definitely make my first
pilgrimage to Riv, and will have time for two days with shorter windows (2-5
hrs) of riding and an all day explore ( probably Riv visit day too.) Then no
real interest in anything more than sightseeing and coffee/lunch in Salt Lake.
I definitely want to stop in Moab on the way to Boulder for a half day or so
ride since My first time there was post-hip replacement this past September so
I could only look longingly... Then just probably putzing around in Boulder
since I'll need the recovery by then, but who knows.

So, which bike? 1. The Hilsen, fendered, Berthoud h-bar bag, 38mm Compass
tires, my PBP tested, trusty steed for years. 2. The Hunq. No fenders, just now
getting dialed in, sort of, (with much thanks to Bill Lindsay for his deep
knowledge and help in troubleshooting), after 4 years of ownership and not
ridden much. Nit to Big rear rack, Smart Sams (but thinking about Racing
Ralph's or something else). 3. The Roadeo. Set up as my go fast. 32mm Compass.

All three bikes are great. I bought the Hunq with single track in mind, and
have used it for that some, but like I said, it needs fine tuned. I ride 90% on
the road but this might be a great time to get acquainted on trails with the
Hunqapillar. Oh, and I want to ride Mt. Diablo.

What's the consensus of the group?

[RBW] Which bike for hippie music?

2017-01-30 Thread panog
My vote goes to the Hilsen. If you've done PBP on it, you know the bike and the
bike knows you. Fenders and racks are good features to have and one of the
detractions from the Roadeo and a long trip as this. The Hunq is not meant for
this kind of trip, IMO, specially if you have the other choices available.

I'm a little late on this but wanted to add my two cents.

I have a PBH of around 81 (haven't measured it exactly in a while) and have
a 55 cm Bleriot. I have found it to be on the small side for me.
Remember, Riv frames are center to TOP unlike many other standard frame
measurements of center to center, which I usually take at 55 cm also. Add
in that it is 650b size tires and I have the feeling that it is too small
for me when I ride it, compared to standard c-c frames with 700c wheels.

I need to get the dust off of it and take some pictures so I can post it
for sale here.

[RBW] FS: Cockpit - Orig. Bosco - 54cm, Nitto Tallux - 10cm, Meisha's Cork grips, Dia Compe Knobs, Shimano Brake levers, VO braided cable housing, Newbaums - wrapped & twined

2017-01-30 Thread jandrews_nyc
Sorry for the bad photos first of all

This is a fun, unusual cockpit I built up with:

   - 10cm Tallux stem
   - Cro-mo Dullbrite Bosco 54cm handlebars
   - Shimano Mountain Brake levers
   - Meisha's Portugese Cork grips, *groved and punched for bar-end
   shifters*
   - Dia-Compe Knobs on further down on the bar
   - Blue Newbaums bar tape - twined off with hemp and one-coat amber
   shellac
   - VO braided cable housing

Three distinct hand-positions on this set up.

   1. Upright on the grips
   2. Hooked between thumb and index finger on the Dia Compe Knobs - Feels
somewhat similar to riding on the hoods of drop levers
   3. Aero position on the flat of the bar on either side of the stem clamp.

This is a big, wide set up..so I'm not sure about what shipping would be.
I'm in NYC so that would be the most ideal..but I can certainly box it and
ship it..but it could be expensive. Happy to discuss.
It's got some beusage but in great shape.

Looking for $130

Thanks

Jason

2017-01-30 Thread Evan E.
Marc: Awesome! There is hope. Thanks for posting.

I agree with Ian: the social acceptance of bicycles may well vary with
region -- or even within a given zip code. I teach at a university and,
years ago, I thought my students might think it was cool if I brought my
bike helmet to class and set it on the lectern next to my briefcase or bag.
But then I realized that most students don't ride, and that in their eyes,
anyone over 23 who rides a bike for transportation is either impoverished
or a total dork. Likely both. It doesn't matter if you ride a Magna or a
Rivendell. Oh, well. I still ride to school. But I no longer carry my
helmet into the classroom.

2017-01-30 Thread Valerie Yates
I think this is a great opportunity to get to know one of your other bikes
better. Both the Hunq and the Roadeo would be great fun in Boulder. We have
so many options for different types of rides including mixed terrain
pavement/dirt road/soft-surface trail routes. I would maybe prioritize the
Hunq if you are more interested in dirt and trails and the Roadeo if you
are more interested in distance and/or climbing and then the Hunq again if
you want climbing on dirt roads. Fenders are generally not necessary here
or likely in Moab.

Re: [RBW] Re: F.S. 55cm Bleriot frame set

2017-01-30 Thread David Johnston
Dan, seems like that 55 would be the perfect fit for you, according to
the Bleriot brochure and my experience. Try to straddle the top tube
barefoot near the stem, it should be quite snug there. Then with shoes
on and standing over the middle you have a nice inch of clearance or
so.

Typical rider height (inches), PBH, SH, Bleriot size
65 to 68, 79.5 to 82, 69.5 to 72, 55

Re: [RBW] From the mouths of babes.

2017-01-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Interesting.

Surprisingly one of them said it was safer (most people assume that cars
are safer, but this little whipper snapper knew the truth). I applauded
and told them I was 10 times less likely to be injured on my bike than in a
car according to studies by the CPSC and NTSB.

Can you give any reasons why this might be so? I have read in several
places that riding a bike is about as safe as riding in a car per unit
time, and that you are about 2X as likely to be injured or killed per unit
distance traveled as when in a car. I'd prefer the other statistic if I
could believe it.

[RBW] Re: Seatpost size for Atlantis?

2017-01-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
My Atlantis took a 27.2 seatpost

When you say "your Atlantis"... do you mean:

A. Your brand new Atlantis frameset, straight from Rivendell Bicycle Works?
B. Your old Atlantis, that you had built before, but are having rebuilt
after a repaint or something?
C. Your old/new Atlantis, purchased second-hand as a frameset from
somebody else?

If A, call Riv. If B, tell them your post used to fit and see if it makes
sense that your painter didn't mask that area. If C, consider the
possibility that the previous owner didn't use a 27.2 seatpost and squished
the seatlug to the wrong diameter. If I was looking at it I would look at
the slot in the back of the seatlug. It should be absolutely perfectly
parallel. If the slot is squished in due to a rough previous existence, a
combination of bending it back out and reaming it back out should fix
things.

[RBW] Re: Seatpost size for Atlantis?

Sometimes something as simple as a burr on the inside edge of the seat tube
can make a seat post feel too snug, in which case a round bastard file will
take care of it in a few seconds. If you get the bike back feel inside
the seat tube with your fingers.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seatpost size for Atlantis?

2017-01-30 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
John, I would go back to Bill's excellent questions because, in a private email
back and forth, he helped me solve the exact same issue with my Hunqapillar. If
the Atlantis could have ever had a slightly smaller seat post installed and
then the bolt tightened, the correct size will not fit. That was the issue with
my Hunq. And he is right, it can be fixed fairly easily. If you bought it new,
then yes, call Riv. Grant explained to me that sometimes a cheaper seat post
will not have the exact right diameter that it is advertised at. I would doubt
that's the case with the Nitto S83, but you could put some calipers to it just
to be sure. After Bill did some 'splaining to me, I came to understand that the
chances of the seat tube being the incorrect diameter are very small, so my
guess is his paint theory, the burr theory or the overtightened theory.
Definitely not the grassy knoll theory, though.

Hm... And Jim, I'd love company on Diablo if I won't slow you down. Maybe

2017-01-30 Thread Adama
I added a large Wald to my Nitto mini front rack about 3 months ago, and
added struts for reinforcement. Commuting most days. The setup
accommodates a work bag + locks + various rain
gear. Or alternately, a gym bag and some groceries, secured
with a cargo net. Wheel flop does not spoil the
ride, but it's expected that even a kickstand may not keep it from toppling
over if loaded and not leaned up well...even with one of those wheel
stabilizers I've tried, derp. Having always had a back rack + fussy
panniers, I appreciate how little time it takes to pull gear out of the
basket compared to bags, making errands zippier. I have yet to do any
basket touring, which seems like it would be hard.

[RBW] Re: Which bike for hippie music?

2017-01-30 Thread Jim M.
The hills on the Riv site are mostly around Diablo and provide good trail
riding. If you want to go all the way to the top, it's easier to take the
paved road, or trails part way and paved part way.

On the trails you can see coyotes but not a dire wolf. Don't worry about
slowing me down. I have more than a touch of grey and my riding mantra is
to not fade away. After we introduce you to more locals, you can say I know
you rider.

[RBW] Re: Which bike for hippie music?

2017-01-30 Thread Ray Varella
Tim,
I grew up at the base of Mt Diablo and have ridden just about every road and
trail in that county.
I don't have a Rodeo but my road bike is pretty similar, i run 35mm tires on it
and I would ride most of the fire trails in the Diablo environs on it.

Moab is a bit different, I would definitely want fatter tires for a lot of that
terrain.
It just depends on what sort of trails you plan to ride.

One question no one has asked.
You are traveling with a bike and going to concerts.
What is your security plan for your bike?

The bike I would choose for the trip would be the one I could either replace
the easiest or would pain me the least to lose.

[RBW] S24o Kit Evaluation

2017-01-30 Thread Justin August
Doing the s24o thing this year. I'm wondering about my kit and what I'm missing
or taking extra.

- Grand Trunk Ultralight Hammock
- Marmot Sawtooth (good to 15F)
- Caldera Cone with Fosters Keg
- GSI Soloist
- Helix Dripper
- Cheap camp mug
- Kleen Kanteen hot thermos
- KK Insulated Cold (on the bike)
- Water Bottle Squeezable
- Nalgene 32oz
- Ibex Woolies 2 3/4 tights & 1 long johns
- Darn tough socks for camp
- 2-3 upper layers (wool, polartec)
- Patagonia Nanopuff jacket
- Wool beanie
- Birkenstock clogs for camp
- Various on bike top layers

My questions are:
Will I freeze without a thermarest or similar pad in my hammock?
Rain fly?
I'm thinking of bring ramen, salami, cheese, baguette and bars/peanut butter.

I have it all except food crammed into my Carradice & Fromt Basket. I have a
Tubus Tara and Ortliebs to use if need be.

Any advice for a first timer?

-Justin
