[RBW] Free order

2017-03-20 Thread Ron Mc
I know a bunch of vendors have points promotions, and I'd add I recently
took advantage of my past purchases from Rivendell when I pre-ordered the
new MUSA shorts.
It's a brilliant promotion. I also like that it doesn't go away.

Nothing down on Ben's cycle, but their points discount has a short life.

It's literally been years since I bought tires from Bike Tires Direct, but
in the past, have bought Paselas and tubies - their prices are good, their
shipping works for me, and they even handled warranty for me on two
Challenge tubulars.

I have a set of rims arriving by UPS today. Thinking about it last night,
was googling for the rim strips I'll need.
The ones I wanted popped up a best price price I BTD, so I visited there.
Checked my account, and I had $26 credit balance from my accrued points.
Loaded up my cart with odds and ends - the rim strips, two Tufo valve core
tools, a free latex tube - it was all free - I only paid the $5 postage.

40's will fit. I had mine set up with Clement MSO's and the ride was super
nice.

I wish I had thought to try it with Albatross bars because I may still have

[RBW] Re: silver a crank forward

2017-03-20 Thread Dave Johnston
The trick with the hidden bolt is to put the one short chainring nut in the
ring then place the ring rotated off by a few degrees and then rotate the
ring into place. The newer ones seem to have a bigger gap at the hidden
hole than the older ones, so they are easier.

None of the ones I have have thin spacers so I'm not sure what that is
about. Where are these spacers?

[RBW] WTB/WTT/FS: Albatross HT Alu for Bullmoose Fillet Brazed Bars

2017-03-20 Thread Timothy Orr
I got a pair of Nitto Fillet Brazed bullmoose bars that I'm hoping to trade for
a set of heat-treated aluminum Albatross bars. I love the look and feel of the
bullmoose, but I'd like to be a bit more upright. My bars have some light signs
of wear on the quill. See pictures below.

Trade: I'm asking that you cover shipping costs for both bars. Given that the
bullmoose bars retail price is $90 more than the Albatross, I think it's a fair
deal.

Buy: Let me know if you have some aluminum Albatross bars for sale!

For Sale: If you'd rather buy the bullmoose bars, I'll sell them for $100+
shipping.

See the Riv site for specs:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/handlebars-stems/products/nitto-bullmoose-bar-dull-bright-fillet-brazed-150mm-16194

Here are some photos of mine: https://goo.gl/photos/AS8FeAud6D5n9Auk9

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

[RBW] MUSA shorts question

2017-03-20 Thread Erik Wright
I just did the same thing. Same waist, bought the same size. They're a little
tighter than I anticipated but I feel like I can get used to them. If I can't,
there are two options: wear them without the buckle clipped so they're just
elastic waisted (works great), or alter the elastic stops for the buckle to
give it some more room to flex. The second one probably doesn't make much sense
without looking at the shorts.

I'd say with a 30-31" waist you should be okay if you can tolerate a slightly
snug waistband.

[RBW] MUSA shorts question

2017-03-20 Thread nathaniel nichols
I have a pair of small and im a 30 as well. Mine are from the riv garage sale
so I'm really not sure if they're the same generation, but, I'd have to say the
waist on the small is kinda tight, I usually don't clasp the buckle and it
hurts my tummy if it rides up too high because the elastic is pretty tight.
Also depending on what you use for underwear, how tall you are(I'm between
5'9-10, with 86pbh and long neck), or how short you like your shorts might be
an issue, I feel like my balls are going to be visible sometimes haha, they're
short And wide! But the air feels nice so it's a trade-off and it's possible
they will fit you differently than on me.

It's worth mentioning this was my second pair. I had my first pair altered to
be tighter around the thigh which then happened to rip the gussetted crotch
part , so be careful with that.

[RBW] Rivendell Rebate Program - Promote your Referral Link here - ONLY!

2017-03-20 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Link to RBW Rewards Program page -
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/reward-program

Over the weekend, I had a couple of people submit links to their personal
referral page for the updated Rivendell Reward Program. It took me a
minute or two to recognize that this wasn't a spam attempt.

The core issue is that people can "Invite" other non-enrolled people to
join, which both assists them (the Inviter) by adding points to their total
and increases the amount of "Onboarding" points which the Non-Enrollee
receives.

It does seem - as they say - very "win-win"...

However, I'm already of the opinion that the the FS/FT/WTB/etc. posts are
expanding to the detriment of general list content (and, yeah, I know, if
you want to change that, look first at your own contributions...) and I
don't want to now see countless threads of "HEY HEY CLICK HERE!" added to
that.

By the same token, I want everyone in this group to take part in the
Rivendell Rebate/Rewards Program, which gives points for social posts (i.e.
getting the word out) as well as writing reviews and doing other exemplary
RBW Citizenship tasks.

https://www.rivbike.com/pages/reward-program

The challenge becomes how to balance these two seemingly opposing desires.

Here's my solution: ONE thread (this one) in which you are welcome to
comment with your specific URL for the RBW Rebate Program. Share your link
and any comment you wish to add. That lets non-enrollees enter with the
maximum amount of Rivendollars, with the specific benefit to whomever gets
selected as the "Point of Entry" into the program.

Those of you who are not enrolled are welcome to choose whomever you wish
(or no one) according to whatever guidelines you want (consistently great
posts here, thanks for technical help, etc.). BUT - please keep your
"thank you's" on private channels (i.e. email the person directly or thank
them in person) rather than adding to the traffic here.

I will remove separate posts with RBW Reward Program urls.

Questions - please contact me directly! Thanks & may the Rivendollars
always be in your favor!

[RBW] Re: Reminder: Rivendell Road Standard FS

2017-03-20 Thread George Schick
I've had this happen before. I removed the front wheel and brake and bars.
Turned it upside down and shot some PB Blaster into the steering tube and
let it sit for quite a while. Turned it back over and loosened the headset
lock nut and shot some more around the area where the adjustable nut meets
the stem and let it sit. Loosened the stem bolt and removed it and shot
some more into the hole. Replaced the stem bolt with about 1/4" still
showing above the top of the stem and let it sit. Then, supporting the
frame, begin to tap on the stem bolt. If no success after 5-10 minutes,
repeat the entire process and eventually the penetrating oil will work it's
way in between the steering tube and the stem and between the wedge at the
bottom.

If the stem has been inserted into the steering tube so far that the wedge
is jammed into the tapered part (the butted section) this may be more
difficult. The frame may have to be turned upside down and a drift punch
or piece of rebar inserted into the steering tube hole at the fork crown
and tapped with a hammer to loosen. If all else fails I expect that
mechanical methods would be required to get it out of there with variable
results and risk of damaging something.

Re: [RBW] Re: Reminder: Rivendell Road Standard FS

2017-03-20 Thread Jim Bronson
I have a 68cm which I think is either a Road Standard or a Custom, either
way, it conforms to Bruce's description...does downhill corners like it's
on rails. It's a joy to ride, and especially to bomb downhills with,
practically begs to go faster. (disclaimer: do so at your own risk) Takes
a load but isn't ideal for it.

I have ridden it somewhere north of 20,000 miles (14,610 in completed,
documented RUSA rides alone), still my favorite in the stable and the one
that gets 95% of all usage. Maybe 30,000 or 40,000, who knows, I am not
that religious about documenting mileage.

The only thing that would get it less mileage would be if I got a purpose
built 650B frame, which I have considered from time to time. I have also
thought though of just dimpling the chainstays for 42mm tires (since it
needs a respray anyway), getting a custom low to mid trail fork and rolling
on with it.

Decisions, decisions :)
I worry about ruining the essence of the bike by modifying it, which is why
I've left it alone so far.

[RBW] How to clean Ortliebs?

[RBW] Re: How to clean Ortliebs?

2017-03-20 Thread dougP
The shiny ones are a coated fabric so I wouldn't get too aggressive with
the cleaning. The worst ones I ever saw were with a guy who'd been on the
road 2 or 3 years continuously. They were originally black but looked like
faded charcoal canvas, with little coating left. The only giveaway was the
little reflective triangle. He was planning to replace them shortly.

[RBW] Clem L (low bar) for longer rides?

2017-03-20 Thread Roberta
For those of you who own this, how do you feel about Clem for longer
"exercise" rides--40-50 miles-- that is NOT touring. That is, I won't
load the bike with anything other than what I need on a one day
jaunt--lunch, flat kit, water, windbreaker, etc. I don't want a slog of a
bike. (yes, I do realize that the "engine" is most important, but this
engine has two bikes and I go faster on one vs. the other.) Most of the
area is flat, but in the city park and in some of the suburbs, it is hilly.

I did consider a used Cheviot, but didn't get the sense that it was a "long
ride" bike-- a bit too upright. I could be wrong.

I'm considering a Clem L so I can do (and want to do more often) longer
exercise rides. My minimum ride is 12.5 miles (1 hour) , but I like to go
25 miles (2 hours) each weekend day. Once or twice a month I'd like to do
a longer ride.

Thanks,
Roberta, PBH 82.5, 57 YO, trying to get into better health

modestly priced then. A fellow had one in town here and it was a great deep

[RBW] Clem L (low bar) for longer rides?

2017-03-20 Thread scott
One limitation for me on my Clem is the saddle. I like the stock saddle a lot,
but it bugs me after 15 miles. If I change it it will help, but I have other
bikes. Also, on longer rides, I ride the bosco bars differently. I will grab
beyond the grips to be a little more forward. My back bugs me when I'm too
upright for too long...but it is all personal. Others surely have done long
rides no problem. It is the bike I ride the most and love the ride.

Roberta, I don't own a Clem, or for that matter any bike with upright bars.
My wife rides a Betty Foy, with albatross bars and she uses albas on our
tandem, which we regularly ride 40 - 50 miles a day, including on tour. I
can't think of any reason not to, unless your in a hurry. A 40 - 50 mile
ride suggest about 3 hours of pedaling, hopefully with at least a couple of
breaks. Give it a go; I'll bet you like it. It's more about personal
preference than right or wrong.

2017-03-20 Thread Sky Coulter
I've got a clementine, i like it a lot and look forward to many years using it
on family rides. But i wouldn't pick it if i was looking for an excercise bike.
If i'm looking to workout on a bike, i want to be able to climb small hills
quickly, to travel fast and impress myself w my capacity for speed.

With the clementine, i want to look around, aim for potholes and enjoy riding
over them while marvelling at how smooth the ride is.

I tried working out to jack johnson once. I really like his music, but it was a
horrible mismatch; the music was sending me chill signals while i was trying to
ramp up to push heavy weights away from myself. I think i'd experience a
similar disconnect if i were to use the clementine for excercise rides.

RE: [RBW] Re: PSA: 56cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-03-20 Thread ted
I like mine a lot, but I doubt RBW will do another edition. The way I remember
it they were discounted out les than a year after starting to accept pre
orders. I can only presume that after a brief flurry of immediate sales they
just didn't sell. Great bikes but apparently a small niche market within a
small niche market making it too hard to break even selling them. If you want
one I'd recommend grabbing the next used one your size that you see, don't be
holding your breath waiting for RBW to reintroduce.

Should have 46/36/26t rings or thereabouts.

Anyone have a spare one? Let me know.

Yes, but Eric's appears to have vertical dropouts! (Unlike the one currently
on ebay, that's closer to my size but $1,000 more and not built as nicely.) If
this one was my size, nothing in the world could keep me from un-stucking that
stem, at this price. I can't believe nobody's bought yet, and can't help but
think that it doesn't bode well for the Roadini project. I hope I'm wrong and
do understand that "new" has its appeal, but this is a pretty special bike for
someone who wants a go-fast.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bags

2017-03-20 Thread David Johnston
The marks rack is kinda heavy, expensive and not that sturdy for the
4lb weight limit it has. Why not just put a Tubus Vega or a cheap
aluminum rack on for max carrying versatility and 40 lb capacity. I
would recommend a rear rack without a "tombstone" for compatibility
with a Sackville. Two that come to my are the Vega and the Planet bike
koko.

I posted this in the iBob group:

https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/internet-bob/c8j08L-eLHk

Let me know if any combo there interests you. I posted hopping to trade for
Boscos but haven't gotten any interests so I might have to offer it up for sale.

[RBW] How to clean Ortliebs?

2017-03-20 Thread iamkeith
Ok, disclaimer first: i have no experience with ortliebs, so test first. If
not mistaken, the fabric is very similar to dry bags which are similar to raft
material, both of which i DO have a lot of experience with, as a whitewater
boater. The best I've found is 303 brand cleaner and, especially, protectant.
It cleans, shines and adds UV protection without degrading the plastic
coating. Ive also heard that magic erasers are good at removing difficult
marks like those from rubbing on aluminum, but haven't tried. My primary need
is more to renew and fight UV damage.
