I’ve cleared the 700x48 Soma supple vitesse tires with minimotos, but that was

Re: [RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-04 Thread Kiley Demond
I favor the options that require going NOTHING additional at each time it
is called into use. Oops, forgot my water bottle. Am I going to pull out a
strap or a bungee to dash back in and grab it? No, and I bet you wouldn't
either; you would let your wheel flop over. And yet, that not happening was
the entire point.

I used to use the little bungee; it didn’t work consistently and I had to
make sure those sharp ends were adjusted away from painted surfaces. What a
PITA to do at the library, again at the P.O., the store, to stop while
talking to friends.

It seems one can do a complicated solution once or a simple thing over and
over and over. I suspect the former solution will appeal to commuters and
those with more stops, and the latter will appeal to those who ride long
distances for exercise and stop maybe once or twice. Wheel stabilizers are
common on Dutch work bikes and non-existent on cyclocross bikes.

Both solutions have merit and it is up to the rider to decide what works
for him or her and reserve judgment.

[RBW] Atlantis maiden voyage

Finished the final buildup details last night and couldn’t wait any longer. It
was cool, cloudy and blustery winds, but felt good to get out and shake out any
bugs and fine tune the settings. Frameset came from another member of the bunch
and was in great (new) condition. Thankful for getting a dream bike sooner than
I anticipated. But out of the gate and 8 miles later, this bike is amazing.
Smooth, responsive, and FUN. It’s so much fun being on a bike that FITS and
becomes an extension of you going down the road.

I’ve been lurking around this group almost daily for many months - learning,
researching, and getting tons of ideas. Thank you for this collection and

[RBW] FS: Low Trail custom paint 61cm 700c Atlantis FF+CK headset - $1,800 shipped OBO

2018-03-04 Thread René Sterental
The time has come. I finally had some time to dissasemble the bike and am
posting the frame, custom low trail fork + original fork for sale. Included
is the Chris King headset with a drilled cable stop I was using to attach
the Berthoud decaleur so it wouldn't interfere with the height or type of
handlebar, plus a fork mounted cable stop for the cantilever brakes you'll
probably use.

Note: The custom low trail fork has a maximum tire size or 700x40 and 50mm
fenders. The original fork has a capacity of 50mm tires, I believe. Even
though the paint color is theoretically the same, it doesn't quite match
the new custom paint job I had done when the custom fork was made and
painted.

[RBW] Re: Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

2018-03-04 Thread Austin
Short shakedown ride on the Sam is done--and oh man, I think I'm gonna like
these bars!

I haven't really settled on a default hand position, but nearly each
position I tried felt quite natural. Given the continued wind, I
streamlined myself in the curves in order to achieve a lower profile. And I
learned why the brake hoods should angle up slightly--for use as another
hand position. No real tweaks to make upon coming home--need a longer ride
to test them out more.

I now get why so many of the RBW folks go all upright...

[RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-04 Thread Ian A
Just to add to my comment of locking the front brake with a toe strap (this
works for me as I can really cinch the brake closed hard). If one rests the
now immobilized bike at the corner of the saddle against a lamp post, sign,
rack etc., it is easy to clip on panniers, and put things in/take out of
panniers, front bag etc.

No stabilizer or flickstand etc is required in this scenario.

The locked brake method works incredibly well, is simple and if one has an
old toe strap kicking around, free to try. I trim toe strap to length FWIW.

I tried the Billie bar on Saturday on the Atlantis demo. They have bring your
hands back like the Bosco without the huge rise. Vince brought out the
Albatross bars to compare.Just eyeballing them I would say that they bring the
grips closer to you two inches mote than the Albatross. Bosco are 9 inches
reach so Billie bar might be 8.81 inches? Again not precise measurements. They
have the Billie bars on a 55 Appaloosa but it doesn't have a saddle yet. Go try
them. I wanted to ask if I could buy a sample of the bars but didn't know if it
was appropriate to ask. Better just to be patient.

[RBW] FS: 55cm Bleriot

2018-03-04 Thread Tim Butterfield
Not sure if this has been posted before.

Other that what I've seen online, I have no knowledge of either this bike
or the owner nor do I know whether the owner may be willing to ship. With
that said, there is a 55cm Bleriot in the Seattle Craigslist.

Thanks for this link, and for the warning about the VO stabilizer.
Reviewing all the possibilities, and reluctant to spend much $$ for a
device that, while apparently effective, clutters up the top tube, I think
I'll use a long toe strap or appropriately long velcro strap.

Re: [RBW] OT - Throwback

2018-03-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I recall the days of curved-top-tube cruisers and leather ball gloves; age
circa 7-8, and my cruiser was a JC Higgins with 24" wheels; a basement
model with no chrome: white bar and rims. But that bike was still at home
when I left at 18, and we'd all thrashed it, and it never, ever got any
maintenance. I think my glove was a department store glove, too, but I
recall loving the feel of the leather and the way it fit my hand during the
pickup games in the dirt lot across the street from our house.

Does anyone play baseball any more? In those days -- early '60s -- baseball
was, as far as I remember, *the* big sport, and we kids played it as a
matter of course -- no sissy softballs, either; always a "hardball". My
parents didn't buy us gum, but I recall other boys swapping the baseball
cards inserted in the packages.

Is baseball still a major sport? Do elementary school-age boys still play
baseball in vacant lots, as opposed to parent-dictated Little League and
company or church softball leagues?

[RBW] Keven Sighting on Riv Instagram

2018-03-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I love Keven's almost-a-cargo-Rivbike. I want one just like it with the rack no
one can afford!

I guess I got the last cheapish barwrap job outta Grant. I won't say how much,
but it definitely wasn't $120. Thanks, Grant!

It's interesting to see a Riv with a trigger shifter as an option. I've run a
bunch of them on pullback bars and aside from no friction option - I don't
care, I've never had a trigger give up and make me wish I could shift without
the clicks - they're fabulous. Clickety click click!

Sinewave had a booth at NAHBS with a nice set-up of the Beacon and battery

I had a Son 28 built up this past week. I just need to order the Beacon

I love it. I really think there is a market for the L models with a setup to
carry kids. It would be a great way to bring in a new generation to Rivendell.
I love my Joe as s kid hauler (though really appreciate how much fun it is

great as well.

[RBW] Re: Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

Ha! In our wee mountain pass, it’s the confluence of multiple air streams, so
we get lots of wind swirlies, in which tailwinds become headwinds and back
again with neither rhyme nor reason all through the ride. Loads of dust
bunnies. One part of the ride down the pass heading home felt more like
climbing up the pass on a calm day, untill the wind shifted and launched me up
the 30mph in 3.8 seconds. Grin. I love rides with extra adventure per mile!

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Re: Keven Sighting on Riv Instagram

2018-03-04 Thread Jeremy Tavan
It's good. I've ridden cargo bikes/cycletrucks with frame-integrated racks
that don't move with steerering, and that's how the Brompton works as well.
It means you don't fight the moment of the load while steering, so steering
is lighter and less floppy than it would be otherwise. The next bike I set
up for heavy front loads will definitely be done this way.

The levers are sold Howard, sorry. I've been out of town and not been able to

Funny, I guess Dia Compe was fairly loose with the designation Gran Compe.
I have a set of 750s that have the regular Dia Compe arms, as opposed to
the Mafac orientation. The calipers in this set have been on my Le Tour
mixte, while the levers are on my Takara; planning to reunite the two on
the Takara this spring. I know Bicycle Quarterly considers the Dia Compe
inferior to the Mafac design, but I really like the old DC centerpulls.

[RBW] Keven Sighting on Riv Instagram

2018-03-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
Keven showed up yesterday on Rivs Instagram feed holding up a really
interesting porteur mixte. I don’t know how to link to Instagram from my phone,
particularly for those of you who aren’t on Instagram. Suffice it to say, is is
a mixte, with two skinny top tubes that go to the rear triangle. Those mixte
tubes have a lng continuous circular bend to them, and there’s a
Brakes on permanent front rack on the head tube. It’s got long chainstays.

Like a visit from my in-laws or leftover fish. After 3 days, it really
starts to stink.

Still blowing 20mph here...

How is that Nor’easter, Austin?

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-04 Thread Julian Westerhout
This looks like a very solid option (albeit rather costly): The
SteerStopper --- https://steerstopper.com

Patrick -- this would be the ticket for preventing flops with heavy front
loads -- in my experience the VO spring stabilizer will not do that very
well with over 10 lb. loads.

[RBW] OT - Throwback

2018-03-04 Thread MartyG

Years ago, not sure when, Grant introduced me (and whoever was around then)
to a company called Nocona - a Texas company that makes ball gloves. Might
have been an early reader article. Such a cool story, and they are alive
and well today. Good for them! I don't have one. Yet. But years ago a
leather glove hanging from my bars was an everyday thing.

Go Nocona!

[RBW] Re: Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

2018-03-04 Thread Austin
Albastache bars arrived and are on the Sam! I hope to get a shakedown ride
in today if the wind here in MD ever starts to subside.

Based on the internet research I've done (most of it redirecting to this
group), I think I've got a solid starting point on positioning.

   - Positioned the brake levers just where the bar starts to straighten
out--this seemed to be most common and the way Riv sets them up in photos I
   found.
   - Brake lever hoods are 15.5mm (6.1") from each other on the Albastache
(more than the original moustache bars, but they have different geometry).
I never could fine this distance on the interwebs for the Albastache so
   here's a baseline :-)
   - I read somewhere that the brakes should angle up slightly--this feels
a bit awkward when I did a couple short circles on the road. Shakedown ride
   will reveal more.
   - Bar is on my 90mm stem, and positioned higher than I ran the Noodles
with the same stem (level with saddle). Seems to be okay.
   - Albastache mounted so that the interior section of the bar is parallel
with the top of the stem. Again, just like Riv's product photo.
