[RBW] Re: Elongating a chain question.

Chains are consumables and wear out as fast or faster than tires.
I buy at least 5-10 at a time. I started doing this when sedisport chains were
$5 a pop.
Adjusted for inflation, decent chains are still pretty reasonable and they are
a fraction of the cost of chainrings and cogs.

That’s an A+ response if there ever was one @Dave.

I wonder if different breeds of cattle produce varying degrees of supple
leather.
It’s possible that as cattle have been line bred for higher butterfat
production or better marbling in steaks, the stiffness of the hides may have
inadvedently become softer.

Concentrating genes through line breeding creates more consistency but in doing
so, the desired qualities as well as undesired qualities will become set.

[RBW] Re: MTBubbe Update

2018-05-04 Thread Paul Clifton
I'm a little sketched out trying to run tubeless on the Atlas rim. Should I
be? Maybe I'll try it. Is the advantage of a narrower tire in back just
rolling resistance? I really need traction going up the short steep rocky
uphills, and I've never been interested in going as fast as possible or
expending as little energy as possible. So I settled on fat and soft. But
I'm open to trying different combos and seeing if it makes any difference.

The trails are in Sykes Park in East Point. Official opening is in early
June, I think. The park has one road that is a loop, and there are trails
visible from the road on either side. Trail access is from various parking
areas along the road. This is the only map I've found:

Thanks for the tip. Torque-ing didn't work. I have a couple 2 bolt posts,
but they aren't the right diameter. I'll see what I can come up with. I
kinda like the look of the Thomson angled posts. I might even try one in
black if I can find it for the right price. The S65 doesn't even have any
knurling to keep it from tipping back. Seems like it should.

It's fun rediscovering mountain biking around here. Finally having a bike
that can handle it with just a tire swap will make that easier to do.

That's great for them. Notice what I said is: "Many of us have
singletrack options that require some squish to be able to run at a decent
speed that makes it fun and worthwhile and not rattling your teeth and
bones." So, to each his own. I'm confident that shocks will be around
for many years to come because they were invented for a reason, and that
reason makes sense to many people and enables them to enjoy what they could
not otherwise.

Jones bikes look great. Never rode one. Many, many more shocked bikes out
there compared to Jones. Including sus-corrected ones that give folks an
option, which was my point.

Regardless, looking fwd to whatever it is Riv has come up with!

Re: [RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Funny. I took a nice 21-mile, mostly (2/3 to 3/4) dirt ride along our
acequia roads and paths on the Matthews this afternoon, and spent more than
a few meditative minutes gazing dreamily down at the front caliper, with
rotor skimming through it smoothly, noting the "light" gap on either side
of the rotor, as it rotated. (Perhaps you need NM light to see this sort of
detail in crisp definition.)

But I was mentally congratulating myself about the almost-utter
problem-free nature of my Road BB7s; and these are not even the lastest and
greatest among disk brakes. I ride in a lot of dust and sand, and the
brakes do squeal if they are dusty; if I get them wet after they have
gotten dusty, they will very, *very* gently rub ("whisk-whisk-whisk") until
they dry. But for 98/100 of whatever units of use you choose, they are as
forgettable as single pivot calipers, if not more so. (I've just been
futzing with centering my nice, old Dura Ace single pivots on another bike
-- and those squeal in cold weather despite all kinds of intevention.)

And, that squeal? That signifies to me that the pads are wearing down the
rotors, and not my precious rims.

[RBW] OT but mentioned on the Blahg: Hiking

Hi, Joe,

I land in the "alternate each foot" crowd for hiking. I backpack in trail
runners and for walks in reasonable weather, like and recommend whatever
comfortable shoes you own. There really isn't much to worry about on a day
hike. A windbreaker, some sense of where you are and where you are going, and a
quart or two of water aren't bad ideas.

Think about what you bring for a day ride in the hills and subtract anything
bike-related. That is about right unless you live on the Eiger.

Re: [RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-05-04 Thread Eric Daume
I would bet any amount you wish that Riv will not make a suspension
corrected frame. Plenty of riders can ride as fast as they like on any
terrain without suspension--look at Jones's bikes.

My guess is that a Riv mountain bike would end up somewhere in the Jones
neighborhood: plus tire clearance, no suspension, longer rear center,
shorter front center, but probably a more horizontal top tube, maybe a lug
or two, and a crowned fork instead of a truss.

Then everyone can start holding their breath for a Nitto lugged dropper
post.

[RBW] Re: Elongating a chain question.

2018-05-04 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I keep a stash of extra master links around and would likely just use them
plus a piece of spare chain the next time I need a longer chain. I've
reinstalled pins and reconnected shortened/lengthened chains (7/8 and 9
speed) with a chain tool several times and have been fortunate to not yet
have one break but my chain tool punch has bent to the point it no longer
installs them properly. It's a double sided one with hex "base" in the
center and a few threads at either side of the base so it could be flipped
over or reversed and threaded into the body of the tool. I had thought the
threads likely just weakened it at a crucial spot only making it more
likely to warp and requiring use of the 2nd side. It's a Bontrager model
chainbreaker I picked up locally a few years ago. I haven't tried to find
a replacement punch/pin for it yet but guessing a more solid single sided
replacement is unlikely to find, if replacements are even sold at all. I
have a spare breaker built into a multitool but this one is more difficult
to use and handle.

I try to use 9 speed drivetrains with Wipperman SS chains on most of my
bikes these days, I have 1 extra chain that I steal links from, since it
seems that most Rivendells these days need longer than stock chains. The 9
speed chains work fine on 7 speed systems. I am a bad boy and use a chain
tool for the extra links and only have 1 master link instead of two. No
chain failures so far, but I do not beat on my bicycles.
I also have all of the extra links that I have removed from various chain
over the past 25 years or so - not a lot of use these days for the ultra-6
Sedisport links, but you never know.

I may look at the new Billie or wave bar in the future

Best option: 2nd chain, use the quick link to add them in. Easy. Simple. And
you have more chain for next time so you don’t have to always buy two each
round (save the quicklinks)

Ouch option: find old chain, use chain tool to add the links, then when
cranking hard the chain brakes and you say “ouch!” (if you’re lucky).

I learned the hard way to never, ever, put chain back together with a chain
tool. Too dainty unless they are the wider 5 speed or single speed chains.

[RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-05-04 Thread tc
I would wish for a suspension-corrected frame/fork design to enable the
bike appeal to a much broader set of wallets. Not all of us have packed
paths to ride on. Many of us have singletrack options that require some
squish to be able to run at a decent speed that makes it fun and worthwhile
and not rattling your teeth and bones. While I sometimes enjoy the
challenge of poking along a course like a 'trials' event, those times are
few and far between. Our options here are rooty, rocky, and often
rut-filled. With an inexpensive (even coil vs. air) shock up front, the
ride instantly becomes not only tolerable, but really fun. Surly and
others seem to have realized this flexibility opens bikes up to a much
larger ridership (e.g., Karate Monkey, Ogre, etc) by offering frame designs
that allowed either rigid or squishy forks. The thought of having a
suspension-corrected Riv frame, which would of course be the best designed
of all sus-corrected geo's ever, is really, really exciting. Not holding
my breath though.

Making a special rim just to use rim brakes with plus tires seems, I dunno,
deliberately retro. It would make your replacement parts very hard to find,
for what advantage? I’ve never had to replace a disc caliper due to
failure, while I have had to replace rims.

The again, once down this path, what’s next? Thru axles?

"mountain bike" is a superset of "fat bike". A fat bike is an ambiguously
defined subset of mountain bike. Not every mountain bike is a fat bike.
For some, a moutain bike is plus sized at 2.75" - 3.75" tires and it's a
fat bike at >4" tires.

Every fat bike is a mountain bike. Not every mountain bike is a fat bike.
Rivendell hinted at a "mountain bike", which means it may or may not be a
"plus sized mountain bike" and may or may not be a "fat bike".

wouldn't be able to clear a 3-inch tire. You may be able to do it with

I agree about if the frame had disc brakes it would contradict what was
stated about already existing auto/moto tech.

rims, called Snowcats/Snow Cats . 44mm wide. They've been around since '93

So I have no idea what the "new" mtb could be either The Bombadil at the
time was the "new" mtb based on the 80's kinda design of mtb's so here
we have another "new" based on the same 80's kinda idea ? You got me !

The only Riv frame I have is a Bombadil and I ride it mostly on road as I
have little place off to ride, but it is a wonderful mtn bikey as-is :)

In the spirit of speculation fun, here's my big guess:

I think the aspect that they need to "pull off" is getting someone to produce a
45mm wide rim brake rim.

Grant has multiple times lumped disc brakes together with motorcycle
technology, so I think someone would be crazy to expect that to happen. And if
it did happen, it would probably be cable only. Cause, zip ties? So people
would complain about that.

The Joe Appaloosa fork crown deign seems like it would lend itself to widening
pretty easily, doesn't it?

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-04 Thread Madam Xylene
Isn't this kinda like asking which one is your favorite child

That being said I have a Homer Hilsen and Cheviut that I use for very
different purposes. Cheviut is around town and up Mt. Diablo once in a
while. Maybe someday I'll try it on 200K brevet. I can load it up with
groceries with racks and bags installed and for around town the upright
position can't be beat.

However, I prefer my Homer for longer under 300K rides but it's now racked
and bagged to carry lots of stuff so it's my backup around town bike with
drop bars that I carry a small watermelon or two, bag of dry cat food and
1/2 gallon of milk et al.

Guess if I could only have one bike and still wanted to do 300K brevets it
would be the Homer but if I wasn't doing longish rides the Cheviut is clear
winner. It's so much fun to ride the Cheviut downhill and uphill it's bonus
workout points.

[RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-05-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
Great point. Speculators speculate. Handwringers wring their hands. There's
a big distinction between the two, and I did not mean to lump them together.

Speculating:
Given that the hints indicated some intent to differentiate from
Hunqapillar, that tells me that they at least thought about calling it
Hunqapillar (a made up name). If they called it Hunqapillar, it would have
had the Hunqapillar headbadge. If they had called it Elephant, would it
still have had the wooly mammoth badge? maybe. I don't know how long it
takes or how expensive it is to make another badge. That would be a new
thing, having two model names associated with the same badge.

More speculating:
I wonder if this mountain will be 9/8" threadless, just like the tandem.
They have the headtube rings and the fork all designed. My WAY OUT THERE
speculation is that they re-use the Bushnell bottom bracket from the
tandem, so we get vertical drop outs, disc brakes in back, and the ability
to run single speed.

The hiking will be in Yosemite, not LA. Plus I intend to keep doing it around
here in Marin County, although what I'll be doing on my own is probably more
accurately called nature walking.

Yes to merino blend socks, I've been using LL Beans in my walking/riding shoes

I have always been a fan of the Trilobites on the Hunqapillar head badge.
How about calling it the Trilobyte (the "byte" is intentional) and the head

rule.

Oh okay. LA hiking is very different than mtn hiking that I like to do.
Went to visit LA a few months back and did some hiking there with a water
bottle, regular clothes, and tennis shoes. The LA trails are pretty easy
going and well kept. The only difficulty is the uphill, and even then it's
fairly steady and nothing insane.

I did learn a couple of things I about shoes from years of backpacking. Make
sure there’s at least a thumb’s width of distance between your toe and the
front of the shoe or boot (not sure if this applies to those minimalist shoes).
This is particularly important going downhill. Make sure there is enough
width in the toebox. Feet swell when hiking. A little wiggle room keeps you
from rubbing them raw. Check for heel slippage. If your heel slips up and
down a lot, it’s guaranteed to blister (almost unavoidable if you hike long
stretches of beach) If you do blister, don’t put tape on it. Bring some
moleskin. Cut a hole about the size of the blister, round the corners so it
doesn’t catch on your sock, and tape it around the blister.

Bring snacks that don’t melt so you don’t bonk.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for aerobic base training heart rate monitors?

2018-05-04 Thread Tom Wyland
Thanks Patrick. I'll investigate but it sounds like my style of riding. I
usually whistle ;-)

I use an Apple Watch and Strava, FWIW.

[RBW] Re: May Snow

2018-05-04 Thread Ron Mc
May snow? Looks like it already did.

We dream of 90 degrees and 40% humidity. Had our first week of breathing
steam, already summer riding here this week. I attacked it, getting in
shape for what follows.

[RBW] Re: May Snow

2018-05-04 Thread ascpgh
Looks like great fun!

Your fixed adventure has sure been some insight, especially given your
terrain and the effect of precipitation on conditions.

I sure will vouch about the hypothermia risks of wet/cold from 25-50°. Now
snug in that band from your and some others' insights crediting Ventile
particularly.

[RBW] FS: Hupe, D-A Levers, Clothing & Misc.

2018-05-04 Thread islaysteve
(Cross-posted from iBob):
I have the following items for sale. Prices do not include shipping.
Here’s the link to photos (I’ve allowed access, but please let me know if
it doesn’t work): https://photos.app.goo.gl/SPWpaY2y4Tsu5TwC7

Pearl Izumi cycling jacket, blue, size M. Single-layer wind jacket.
Several years old but little wear, other than the elastic is somewhat old.
One small pocket inside useable for keys. Reflective piping. Fits snug
like P-I tends to do. $20.

Zoic short sleeve cycling jersey, size L, grey. Quarter-zip. Nearly new,
worn a few times. One large and one small zippered pocket in rear. $20.

Dura Ace Brake shift levers, 8-speed. The original Shimano D-A brifters.
Good condition with very slight scuffing on front, hoods show normal wear.
Front cover name plates are faded, shown removed in photos but I will send
with brifters. New plates can be purchased on eBay. Note: These levers
will shift some but not all Shimano 8-speed groups. If interested, I can
provide further info. These go for much more on eBay, I’d rather pass them
on to list members. $45/pr.

Rivendell Hupe detachable rear bag support. If you are not familiar with
this item, please research to see how it works, info might still be up on
the Riv site. Note: Prone to scratching your frame. I have covered the
offending end with a plastic cap, but this is no guarantee that it will not
scratch. Use at your own (frame’s) risk. $10.

Delta fork mount. This is normally mounted to a pickup bed or similar
location. Shown on my Miata (Bleriot and Miata not included!). This is a
very strong version with loops in the levers to provide for a lock. The
mounting holes on this one have been enlarged slightly to accomodate the
mounting area on my car. If anything, this provides some flexibility for
mounting. $10.

Sea Sucker “Rear Wheel Strap”: This is a strong suction cup with a velcro
wheel strap to hold down a wheel; attaches to car body and is removable.
Similar to this one:
https://www.seasucker.com/collections/rack-accessories/products/rear-wheel-strap.

Works very well. This and the fork mount above were used to create a trunk
mount on my Miata. I no longer have that car so am passing the mounts
along. $35 for Sea Sucker (sells new for $55).

Or take all of the above for $99 plus shipping. PM me via this list, reply
here, or email directly to: alkiremx5_at_veri2on_dot_n3t. I will quote
shipping based on items and your zip code. Thanks for looking! Steve
