[RBW] FS: Pair folding 406 bsd/20" 35 mm Kojaks

2018-07-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Under 400 miles, which is new for Kojaks.

Kevlar/folding bead, not the cheaper wire bead ones. Measure 32 mm on the
dot on my 23 mm (outside) rims.

$30 shipped for the pair in CONUS.

I am replacing them with Tioga Power Band 1.85s.

Based on instagram monitoring, it appears that she's on a bit of a

My latest cap was made to fit. I sent her the measurement and she nailed
the fit. I can't comment on any pre-made standard sizing.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders wear for cycling caps?

2018-07-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Oh, I love cycling caps.

Summer: I wear caps mainly for sweat control (even the 1/2 mile rt to the
store just now -- panniers easier for loads than carrying while walking --
with bare head had sweat flowing down my face and making my sunglasses
slip), and perhaps they do a bit for shade (though I wear sunglasses) and
even for wind protection. In the rare occasions I ride in the rain, the
brim keeps the driving drops from stinging my face and even keeps my shades
freer of raindrops.

I presently own about 6 or 7 Nashbar-distributed retro team caps (which
cause me all kinds of anxiety when it comes to matching them with jerseys:
is it caddish to wear my nice Bianchi cap with my Bianchi jersey? What
about a Legnano cap with a Sugoi jersey?); 2 or 3 remaining custom caps
from an order from LittlePackage some 5-6 years ago; and a green Rivendell
cap. With all but the customs, I shorten the brims by ~8 mm by severely
bending them upward, this so I can see out from under the bills when in the
hooks. Low brow, doncha know.

Winter: I have 3 wool cycling caps with reasonable brims that to some
degree or other do stay put over my ears: a big floppy Walz** from Synaptic
Cycles; a nice Trek or Specialized cap; and a cheapo wool that I bought on
eBay that is pretty good for the money, though a bit too snug -- I have a
large head. For really cold weather I wear a pseudo Peruvian cap in cheap
wool***, with earflaps that tie under my jaw, or a balaclava, though I
haven't used one of these last for several years -- too much of a hassle to
get it on, when the Peru cap keeps me almost as warm.

* I think that the brims on these may be as long as 4 cm. An earlier set
had ~3 cm brims, and used to cause my daughter all sorts of social grief
when I rode over to meet her at school.

Riding temps from 100+ highs, tho' with humidity high if it gets past 10%,
to the upper middle teens.

** This has caused snide comments from the teenage girl set when I ditto.

*** $12 or less from Target 6-8 years ago, but very practical.

[RBW] Re: MIT AHH - When Available?

2018-07-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
First, I will say I deeply appreciate and respect the ability to pick up a
phone, call Rivendell with just about any question, know I will end up
talking to someone that wants to be helpful and will be glad, at least
truly ok, that I called. I have never had a bad experience calling and
even got to talk for awhile with Grant when he answered the phone once...
highlight of my day! Heck, here I am still talking about it!

That said... If the phone is the only or best way to get good information,
then I worry. Actually, I don't worry, as I have decided I can only worry
about so much, and I trust the people at Riv to run their business, design
and build their bikes, do what is needed. If it is real enough to be real,
known enough to be known, I assume it will be communicated... and I will
read every word, look at every picture. But, if not communicated out
publicly, I assume things are still being decided, schedules are not known,
details are still to be worked out, problems still to be resolved... and so
I do not barge in, I try not to waste anyone's time.

I do sincerely believe that Rivendell would be well served by having an
official communications person, a true point of contact, the reader and
responder of the e-mails, the asker of questions to others when needed,
someone who could know as much as there is to know about all things
Rivendell... and they would communicate and post fairly regularly, and I
would know my questions would not be keeping them from other work, because
that would be their main mission, even their passion, to let people know,
participate, plan, and get excited... and to help Rivendell not only
survive but to thrive.

Ok, enough words as it is time to find the COG group (Cyclists of
Galesburg!) and ride on this amazingly beautiful morning! Hope the day
for everyone is a good one.

[RBW] Ride Report - HHH W Overnighter and Beer Sampling Adventure

2018-07-07 Thread Tony DeFilippo
My wife and I got into tandem riding a couple years ago leading to the
purchase of a sweet 90's era Burley Bossa Nova frame which we Riv'd up
 and got in a
number of short local rides before branching out on the C including an
epic (for us) 2 day Harpers Ferry overnight
. That
ride was all of a sudden 2 1/2 years ago and alot has changed around our
household. Our daughter Rebecca just turned 2 in June and we traded in the
Burley for one of the last Hubbahubbah's back in April. The HHH was an
impulse purchase about a year in the making... I followed Grant's blahgs
and newsletters regarding the development of the frame intently but was to
caught up in baby stuff to make the move. That and our inability to use
the tandem last summer put the damper on things. But last year we managed
to get Rebecca out quite a bit on the XO-3 and Clementine via a Yepp Mini
front seat and this year we added a Burley trailer which opened up the
Saluki and the potential for an extra long tandem-trailer expedition. So
when one of the spring blahgs mentioned single digit HHH stock in size
small I finally pulled the trigger and I'm glad I did.

Our HHH was bought through and partially assembled by James and Candice at
Analog before they left MD. It was nice dealing with a knowledgeable and
enthusiastic company like them, thanks guys! Even with the assist it took
a while to sort the bike out into full ride-able shape and with all the
rain we had in April and May and a competing project (wooden boat build)
the HHH didn't see alot of action. In the last couple weeks though after
tweaking the rear disc brake to add a bit of caliper clearance and
equipping the bike w/ a nice set of matched grey sackville luggage -
Saddlesacks Small, XtraSmall and a Basket bag the bike was finally ready
for a real test ride. Finally on to the actual ride.

The initial plan was for a 'Leesburg Loop', consisting of a C outbound to
Whites Ferry, overnight in Leesburg (hotel) and return via W partaking
of the breweries and good bike shops along the way. The temperatures
(exceeding 90 on day 1) and the thought of being that remote on the first
real extended ride for the HHH ended up convincing us to reverse that plan
and start via the W While the C would have been cooler w/ its shade
I just wasn't comfortable being that much more remote on the first big
ride, the W offers plenty of bail outs, bike shops and access to uber if
there was a bike or toddler emergency. The W is a real treat of a rail
trail, it starts technically in Shirlington and goes all the way to
Purceville some 43 miles. We connected from our Alexandria neighborhood to
the trailhead via the Four Mile Run Trail and started the steady climb out
of the inner beltway area. Its only about 460' of climbing over 10 miles
but in that heat and with the full load of tandem + trailer I was
definitely feeling it.

We made our first stop at the longtime classic Vienna Inn
, just off the trail in downtown Vienna it's still
easy to miss but highly recommended. We tanked up on the house specialty
of fully loaded chilly cheese dogs washed down by a frosty mug of beer.
The first leg was about 14 miles non-stop and we decided to make the
remaining segments a bit shorter as we were really hot and tired easily, we
averaged 11.2-11.7 mph over both days (moving speed measured via strava).
Momentum on a tandem is a fickle beast, once rolling its amazing but the
many starts and stops especially in Vienna and again in Reston along the
W make for alot of lost momentum. Stop #2 is a big favorite of mine,
the Green Lizard Bike Shop which is
also serves coffee and beer now. We were mostly interested in their Port
City Derecho ale
 - a local
brewery and an accidental beer recipe resulting from a significant power
outage changing the brew sequence for an ale they were brewing. It was
very refreshing and I took the opportunity to upgrade our lock situation to
an Abus bordo lock during this stop. Green Lizard is a great shop in a
great location, about 22 miles from home for us its a good destination in
and of itself. Not exactly BOB-ish, but they are friendly and have more
fatter tired bikes on the rack these days than ever before at least. The
last stop

Is there room to get purchase with a pair of vise grips? You might be able to
simply unscrew. I might also try a sharpened punch and attempt to unscrew by
tapping with the hammer and punch the remaining head of the screw to the left.

Some WD40 or equivalent applied to the screw before starting would be good.
Tape the frame in the area in case of a slip.
