These rims are 19mm, so a narrower tire would likely work. They're road

Re: [RBW] FREE* Schwalbe Inner Tube SV19A (Presta) NIB - 650B x 54-60mm / 700c x 38-60mm

2018-10-02 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey LeRoy,

You probably know this, but just in case: The Schwalbe tubes come with a
Presta nut with a little raised extra part the diameter of a Schrader hole.
I assume you prefer Schrader valves for reasons of pumps or
standardization, but if you're just worried about fit, fret not. It'll fit
great.

This link has pictures of the three popular converters:
https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/18859/does-valve-stem-diameter-matter-for-my-rims
The Schwalbe one is similar to (but not the same as) the one in the middle.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-02 Thread Reed Kennedy
Spoke with Bruce off-list a bit and he helped me track down this archive of
an old Riv web page that does indeed list the Ram tubing specs:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070513053057/http://rivbike.com/webalog/frames/50074.html

It's listed as .8/.5/.8 OS, exactly as Bruce said. Excitingly, that almost
perfectly matches the measurements I recently took from a 64cm Ram:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

I took the measurements before I saw those specs, so that validates my
results nicely.

[RBW] Re: Kid Clemmin' & The Morally Indignant Motorist

2018-10-02 Thread jack loudon
I was on the other side of the scenario once, as a would-be helpful driver
being yelled at by a cyclist. There is a narrow 2-lane road in Seattle
that winds through a park (the Arboretum, for locals), that is also a main
thoroughfare and very busy. It also has no shoulders, so it's difficult
for cars to get around cyclists. While a few hardy cyclists ride through,
most, like me, take the bike route nearby that roughly parallels this
road. One day I was driving through the Arboretum and saw a father and son
ahead, on two separate bikes. Many cars were stacked up behind these two,
and one by one they impatiently accelerated past when the opposite lane was
clear. When it was my turn behind them, I noticed the boy was pretty
young, maybe 8 or 9. He was sobbing and clearly unhappy. When I pulled
out to pass, I rolled down my window, smiled at them, and mentioned the
nearby bike route, thinking they might be glad to get off the busy road.
Well, the father unleashed a torrent of abusive language at me, including
frequent use of the F-word, all in front of his son. The dad was
undoubtedly frazzled from the traffic, but I felt really, really bad for
his son; that he had to have such a jerk for a dad.

I have a Copenhagen on one bike, and a Pletscher on the other. The

slightly lighter weight. The adjustability and large feet and cheaper

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b narrow tires

2018-10-02 Thread Steve Palincsar
So is that what this is in aid of, really small size road bikes? Time
was, 650C was the size of choice for really small road bikes even though
only really narrow tires were available in that size. It might have made
sense for manufacturers to go to 559 for such bikes -- it seems so
quaint now to think that at one time 559 was so popular -- but there
never were many high quality roadie-narrow tires in that size, and of
course now some are floating the idea that 559 is obsolete.  Perhaps 584
roadie-narrow tires aren't so crazy after all if you must have narrow
tires: the issue of small frames having trouble fitting a 700C wheel
without strange geometry compromises hasn't gone away, and a 28-584
wheel is going to be substantially smaller in diameter than even a
23-722 (that, after all, is about the same size as a 42-584!) and 28mm >
23mm.

Yes, he should definitely only make the bikes he wants to make. And they
are functional and very interesting.
But I feel like they are phasing out the bikes that interest me. Not that
that matters.
Just leaves a sigh in hopes that in the future, if I want another Rivbike,
they will have something to offer that I will like since I only have ridden
Rivbikes since 2012, and I don't want to ride any other
brand...okay...maybe a Boulder Road Sport.

[RBW] Re: MIT 64cm Homer

2018-10-02 Thread Joe Bernard
The thing with RBW is it's not a big bike company trying to fill market niches.
It's Grant, and he has always pushed the envelope of what a bicycle can look
and feel like to get it to work better for the everyday "going for a ride"
rider. Remember when the big guys decided "plush" was a thing, and suddenly
road bikes sprouted higher bars, longer caliper brakes and fatter tires? That
came strictly from Grant's insistence that road bikes could become better for
most of the unracers who were buying them.

Now that the comfort revolution is complete in Big Company World, Rivs are
stretching boundaries again. I think it's good for biking, plus it kinda
doesn't matter if it's not. Grant runs the joint and he's building the bikes he
wants to see. I think that's cool!

32 Cypres narrowest I used.

28 might look funny in such a wide fork of a 650b bike.
Plus, the height of the bb would probably drop alot.
I noticed when I switched from 42 Hetres to 32 650b Cypres, the bike looked
like it shrunk. But I liked it!!
Rode great.
28's would make it look really low.

My Great Uncle and my Dad both had darkrooms in their basements. Ah, that
sour chemical smell! Takes me back to 1974.
My Great Uncle served in WWII in Bermuda (the whole war), and iirc, and
did photography for the Army, who were decoding Japanese intercepted
messages or something like that.

My Uncle and Dad were enthusiasts back in the 40's-80's. They were always
outdoors laying in the grass on their sides or backs holding their cameras
at odd angles trying to get the shot they wanted of the flowers, or us
kids, or other relatives. I should post some of them. My Uncle took a shot
of me chalking the sidewalk at two years old and it won for best pic in the
Baltimore Sun. My other Uncle took lots of shots of what appeared to be
dilapidated Baltimore housing. He and my dad were later into taking pics of
what I thought were very odd things. Like a corner in the ceiling of a
stairwell. Seemed like they liked intersecting lines and how shadows and
light played upon them.

I never got into photography myself, but I still remember the metallic
smell of the camera components, when they would let me shoot.

[RBW] FS: Winter Built Box Dog Bikes Pelican

2018-10-02 Thread G.E.
I have acquired too many of the same sort of bicycle (I don't know if
that's really possible, but I'm running out of space, so I'm going with
it), and am selling my 48cm Box Dog Bikes Pelican frame/fork. Box Dog no
longer makes this size, so for a smaller rider who has wants this frame,
this may be the opportunity. Link to photos are here
 (geo
chart included in photo link as well).

I bought this to be my longer-distance rider and it's been a sweet little
bike, but as stated above, I've acquired several of the same type of bike
and I have to start clearing some things out. It doesn't have a ton of
miles on it (less than 500 miles) and it's never been crashed. There are no
dents, gouges, etc on the frame. There are some wear spots (to be expected
with use - see photos), but overall it's a very clean frame/fork.

The sale will include the frame, fork, Velo Orange Grand Cru headset and
the downtube cable stops. The current price on these Pelican frames is
$2,000. Price for this one is $1200 (+ shipping costs through Bike Flights
-- probably around $50-60, depending on where the buyer is in the U.S.).

Happy to answer any questions here or via Direct Message. Thanks!

Big fan of double kickstands. I've got the VO on my Sam, which is my
upright city bike with a Wald small basket on the Mark Rack in front. I
use the VO wheel stabilizer to help with wheel flop.

I have a Pletscher on my Ram.

So the lesson might be that the heavier VO is more appropriate with the
heavier bike.

[RBW] Re: Feedback? Velo Orange Double Kickstand

2018-10-02 Thread Tom Wyland
I have a Pletscher folding double-legged kickstand on one of my bikes and a
fixed (non-folding) double-legged kickstand on my Dutch Bike.

The Pletscher is much lighter (aluminum) and folds away nicely compared to
the bulkier steel fixed type.

The VO Porteur kickstand allows you to adjust the length of the legs. This
is key because it allows you to put it on a different bike. With the
Pletscher you have to cut it for it to work correctly without lifting one
of your wheels.

You may have an issue with wheel flop with these kickstands. I just use a
Nite Ize Gear Tie to fix the front wheel to the downtube.

Since I do these swaps frequently, I guess I have become quite quick at it.

[RBW] Re: Different bars make a different bike.

2018-10-02 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I used to do lots of cockpit swapping, and you can optimize your setups for
quick swaps. I could go swap among Noodles, Albas, and Moustache in just a
few minutes. Fast enough to do so in the morning before a commute, if I
really wanted to do so. But it's faster and easier to have two or more
bikes. :)

If you go with down-tube shifters, you don't have to worry about swapping
shifters.

If you have cantilever brakes, set your straddle hangers, and you're done.
More specifically: have two or more handle bars (with stems), each with
their own brake levers, brake cables, housing. My Rivs all have split cable
stops; after unhooking the straddle hanger the cables+housing lift out
easily. Done!

At one point, I did have bar-end shifters and thumbies. You can purchase
cable splitters (e.g., http://www.davincitandems.com/components/#split)...
although you might need to purchase additional down-tube cable stop or
something else. I have a set of Shimano Deerhead shifters, which I could
swap easily with an allen wrench.

There's a tutorial in the RivOB archives with more detailed instructions
(which is where I learned how to do it).

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for floor pumps?

2018-10-02 Thread blakcloud
I have two Joe Blows, that work well and are in your price range. These are
my two go to pumps.

I also have two Silca Pistas that are both over 30 years old and still
going strong but they are not better than the JB's. I keep them for
nostalgic reasons. Plus, I think they fit the Rivendell ethos a little
better.

Last I have a Lezyne CNC Floor Drive which is out of your price range and
has the worst possible head ever designed. What a hunk of crap. I never
touch that thing. I am going to try their latest head design but it is on
back order in Canada.

I have never tried to the SKS pump but it seems to be well liked here.

A couple of weeks ago I needed air and went to a Specialized dealer and
used one of their floor pumps in the mechanics area. I don't know what
model I used but it was simple the best pump I have ever used. I would have
bought it if I didn't already have five pumps.
