Huh. Maybe this is old news, but i just saw this crust rack, yet another "mini
platform," for the first time. Doesn't have the diving board, but it looks
like it would work with many canti-style riv forks.

[RBW] Re: Packing and/or shipping bike damage: Any strategies for successful resolution?

2018-10-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
What does the buyer want? Does the buyer want to give you the bike back
and get all his money back. Does the buyer want a new, free $1400
frameset? Does the buyer want a couple hundred dollars to just accept that
it's scratched. My first recommendation is that it's on you to determine
what it will take to make things right with your buyer.

My second recommendation is to make a BikeFlights insurance claim against
the insurance you purchased when you decided to ship with BikeFlights. In
my experience, if you paid for insurance, they pay with minimal hassle. If
you didn't buy insurance then I would expect that you would have a much
harder time getting anything out of BikeFlights. Everybody should buy
insurance when shipping with BikeFlights. Everybody should buy more
insurance than the bike is worth.

My personal experience was I sold a tandem for $2400. I shipped via
BikeFlights and I insured it for $3000. The box was torn up badly and one
of two parts boxes fell out, which was mortifying to me because I packed it
myself. I think it had to be badly manhandled for the box to be
destroyed. The buyer and I agreed what it would take to make it right and
it was $800. I made an $800 claim to replace missing parts from the lost
parts box and BikeFlights paid that painlessly. After that, the buyer
decided he still wasn't happy and wanted to ding me personally for another
$200. I wasn't thrilled about the moving goalposts, but I paid that
punitive adder, since it was my box that failed.

Got mine as well this evening!

Wore it for a minute. They felt quite roomy for me. If I recall

length (I tend to buy half size bigger to avoid toes getting squished).

Looking forward to wearing them to work tomorrow!

My first thought was, "Please no used soap on the list!" My second thought

joke, I guess."
My *third *thought was, "Oh, there are 48 of them. That's like... math.
Like $1 off each bar."

My suggestion would be to lead with the fact that you're selling a case of
soap. Not a single (SMALLER) bar.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for floor pumps?

2018-10-09 Thread Philip Williamson
I have a Rennkompressor in pieces in the shed. First the head failed (soon
after purchase from Riv), and then the air-pushy thing failed recently,
after years of driving a Topeak(?) replacement head that was better in
every way to the original. I have some idea of hacking a new plunger, or
using a Silca piece, but I should probably put that piece of aggravating
shit in the recycling bin. It's like a Mercedes 300 that turns out to be a
lemon. "But it's so SOLID!" "Yeah, but if you can't drive it, it ain't a
car. It doesn't matter how well the doors seal if the glow plugs just keep
failing."

I have a Serfas pump from the LBS that has never given me a lick of
trouble, and a scarred pink Columbus Silca I recently rebuilt with new
parts. The Serfas was cheaper in all, and probably works better, but the
Silca is like my La Pavoni that needs its third rebuild. I'll probably do
it.

[RBW] Packing and/or shipping bike damage: Any strategies for successful resolution?

2018-10-09 Thread Joe Bernard
I don't know how to resolve it legally, but all that damage didn't come from a
box being tossed around. The whole point of packing the bike a certain way - as
described on the Bike Flights site - is to protect it even if something presses
against the box. Metal-to-metal contact means whoever packed that box was an
incompetent hack. The owner owes you a new frame.

[RBW] Re: Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

2018-10-09 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I had a 52cm Clementine for several years (sold due to circumstances, not
dissatisfaction with the bicycle) and I also helped a friend purchase a
Cheviot from Harris Cyclery. I did not find either bike "stout." I'm not
even sure I know what that means when used to describe how a bicycle rides.

I know it is fashionable to talk about flex and stiffness and planing and
spriteliness, and I will say that a vintage 531 frame definitely gets in
synch with my power output. But with a good bike with decent tires, I just
like to ride. I was in Chicago for 10 days recently and was quite happy
doing 30 miles on the 3-speed Divvy bike. Yeah, Cadillacs are heavy, but
the ride is sweet.

Both the Cheviot and the Clem L are fun, fun, bikes to ride. I think as
some have pointed out, geometry, handlebars, tire width, and brakes will
make some bit of difference. I will say that I find myself at least as
enamored with the Clem L's appearance as the Chevs, and would have to give
it the edge at this point. Not only is that lower low tube useful, that
swoop dee doop give the bike a classic, laid back look. The welds are nice,
it has some lugwork, the Art Carney decal, the paint is super--it's such an
approachable, friendly bicycle! A convivial bicycle!

Yes, I am a Clem L fanboy! If anyone has a 52 frame and fork in grilver, I
am almost at a point where I could consider reacquiring one--please let me
know.

[RBW] Packing and/or shipping bike damage: Any strategies for successful resolution?

2018-10-09 Thread tc
I guess there is a first time for everything. The beautiful, pristine Sam
I sold recently was damaged by what looks like a bad packing job, and the
bike shop owners are pointing the finger at Fedex, even though the box
isn't showing any signs of being hit, penetrated, folded, creased, etc..

Never had this issue before. I've never used this shop to ship a bike
before, but they have 5 locations in this area, have been around a while,
and are fairly popular. They carry Santa Cruz, Specialized, Cannondale.
The Sam's buyer has pictures showing several areas where the paint has been
rubbed off down to the metal by what looks like metal-to-metal contact
(likely a bar-end shifter). Foam had obviously fallen off several areas
leaving frame and components to rub against each other. A zip tie
apparently was applied so tightly that paint was rubbed off. The wooden
plug in the seat tube had fallen out, causing the paint on the point of the
seat lug to be rubbed off. The seatpost collar clamp bolt is missing. It
really makes me sick to think of that bike in that condition ... and of
course the buyer is very disappointed, this being their first Riv.

All evidence points to a poor packing job, but the bike shop manager, with
whom the buyer and I spoke with today, said that the owners think it's
Fedex's issue to resolve. I was flabbergasted, and have escalated to the
shop owner, who is supposed to call me to discuss.

In the meantime, we're looking into Fedex claims. Bikeflights terms and
conditions state very clearly that by shipping via Bikeflights, you agree
to pack the bike very well, per their recommendations. I'm not sure what
the insurance is for except for the even worse case of the bike being
lost.If

I'm thinking there has to be more than one of you who has been in a similar
situation of dealing with finger-pointing packers vs. shippers. Any
recommendations for resolving?

Thanks,
Tom

make this mega super convenient?

There is!! sort of..

in the US really rip along. I'm just rambling, but I appreciate your
advice!

I agree, Patrick. I think that it would be nice to mix it up and get off
the beaten path. We are going to be open varying which route we take. If
the traffic gets too crazy we can definitely switch it up. I know what you
mean about being spoiled. I'm in Colorado too. I live off of Highway 77
in Jefferson and it's probably the best kept secret in the state. Crazy
good riding and nobody around!

Thanks for the info, Doug. I appreciate all the time you took with this.
I'm from the OC myself and as soon as I hit Seal Beach I have a lots of old
tricks up my sleeve. My mom is in Aliso Viejo so that's our final stop.
I've done the ride from LAX with the kids when they were much younger and
it was cool. I enjoyed the strange looks we got with these little kids on
touring bikes! I'm worried about the hills with my daughter, but I'll have
to just see how she does! I have the the book you mentioned. My book is
pretty vintage, however. I think they've put up new stuff since mine was
published.

[RBW] Re: Colossal Wald Basket

2018-10-09 Thread Will
That's the size Wald basket I used for about 6 years delivering newspapers
as a kid. You do need to reposition it though. It is about 3 inches to far
forward. If the center of gravity for your load is ahead of the front axle,
the handling will be poor.

See if you can move it back and see if you can find struts to support it
from the axle, not that slender rack.

It is a great basket but it needs to be as close to the the head tube as
you can get it (which is why newspaper bikes had coaster brakes, not
calipers). And it needs wide lateral support connected to the wheel, not
higher. Higher support on the fork blades lends to instability: too much
flex.

Been there.

Good luck.

Thanks, all, for the great collective input on frame choices!

[RBW] I RECEIVED MY SOLEREBEL SHOES

2018-10-09 Thread Jon Dukeman,central Colorado
I received my shoes today.
Unfortunately they are too small.
I put them up against my foot sketch and the outside of the shoes are close
to my foot sketch with no room inside. Maybe the copy of the sketch that
was sent to use as a pattern shrunk in the transition.
I will take them to Goodwill and maybe someone can use them. I will not
ask for a refund or for a new pair.
Like most here I bought the shoes to first help these people and second to
actually get a pair of shoes that fit.
I hope others here have better luck.
Jon

[RBW] Re: New SimWorks rack

2018-10-09 Thread Jon BALER
I really was excited when I first saw this, love the adjustable struts.
Their potluck rack was cool, but wasn't tall enough for large 700C tires.
I have the Rawland demi porteur rack, and hate that their is no front-back
adjustment (except using a spacer/long bolt)

No light mounts?
If it is intended to support handlebar bags, why doesn't it have a
tombstone rear? (See disclaimer in link below)
2 kg max weight
No platform dimensions provided?
Why not use the upper mounting points available on the disc trucker in the
photo (like some Riv's have)

[RBW] Re: My wife's request for a bike tour

2018-10-09 Thread Jon BALER
Back in 2015, my wife, a friend, and I did a 5 week tour from Vancouver to
San Louis Obispo. We primarily followed the Adventure cycling and book
routes, but departed west from Portland to hook up with the Cascades route,
took that south to Crater Lake, and then back to the coast for the last bit
of Oregon. We also took a detour to Sonoma county before reaching San
Francisco. It was just under 1800 miles.

Some thoughts:

   - Highway 1 has pretty heavy traffic in places on the CA coast. Not
sure it would be suitable for a family tour. I was almost taken out by an
RV mirror, but otherwise it wasn't terrible. Definitely helpful to have a
   mirror.
   - The climp up Bear camp road back to the coast in Oregon can be quite
long and hot with no water in the summer. We paid a rafting company to
   shuttle us.
   - We ended our tour in SLO, after hearing the remaining journey to LA
wouldn't be great. I recall hearing quality of campsites would be an issue.
   - Going inland in Oregon to Hood River, Cascade Lakes, Bend/Sisters, and
Crater Lake was awesome and had many highlights of the trip.

Re: [RBW] Seat post slippage

2018-10-09 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Carl:

I had a similar problem once. Take the post out and feel around the inside of
the seat lug. You’ll be looking for a ridge or imperfection … and it looks like
you may have one on the left side toward the rear, based on the scratches on
the post. If you find anything like that, carefully file it down so it’s smooth
all the way around.

A ridge or high spot like that will keep the lug from holding the post firmly
all the way around, which can lead to slipping.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-10-09 Thread John Rinker
Rode the length of the GDMBR with a large Wald basket zipped to the NItto
front rack and loaded with 3-4 Kg of goodies (tent poles, camp stool,
sleeping bag, frisbee, slops, etc. and on good days, a six-pack). Like
Wally E. I had a Sea-to-Summit 3/4" strap around the tombstone hoop and
wrapped once around the basket before it went over the bars on either side
of the stem. Checked the bolts every 3-4 days which never needed
tightening, but did replace a couple of zipties along the way. The front
end took some pounding on rougher sections here and there, and everything
was hunky-dory. Couldn't have been more pleased.

Cool that Riv is now including straps with the racks (If I understood what
I read.)

[RBW] Re: Roadkill intense increase in your area this week?

2018-10-09 Thread William R.
Hi Lum,

Yes, I have noticed an uptick for sure, up here in New York State just
north of the city and also closer to where you are. My parents live on the
Maryland shore and I was down there visiting and riding my Appaloosa this
past weekend. The squirrels are very active right now and I saw many dead
ones on the road, some of them spectacularly (and sadly) where I had to
swing wide to avoid them fenderless. I also saw one deer, a possum, a
turtle, and a few snakes (one quite large) all dead in the road. Surprised
to see the deer, don't see too many down there dead or alive. My parents
live in a quiet area away from the resorts and there is not usually that
much road kill. It's pretty sad.

Up here in Westchester, County, New York there is also an uptick. There is
a surprising amount of wildlife here. Lots of chipmunks, squirrels,
rabbits, skunks, raccoons, possum, deer, foxes and yes, the coyotes to got
with all of that food. I plan to chime in on Patrick Moore's coyote thread!
And yes, just a really sad amount of road kill up here at this time. Lots
of dead chipmonks on the MUP that I ride a lot, so they are getting hit by
bikes. They are crazy though, zipping back and forth, between my wheels, I
don't recall ever feeling that I made contact with one though...

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadkill intense increase in your area this week?

2018-10-09 Thread Peter White
In New Hampshire we had a bumper crop of acorns last fall. It was amazing
how many there were. And this fall I haven't seen even one on our property.
So lots of critters made it through last winter which otherwise might have
died. Populations of chipmunks, red and grey squirrels went way up. I
wouldn't be surprised if more deer than usual survived the winter since
there was so much food. But now that high population has next to nothing to
eat, so they're getting desperate. I suspect that accounts for the high
road kill in this area.

weeks. If they are making the shoes from the basics, including spinning
the material to create them, 10 to 12 days seems unrealistic. Looking at
the time frames of delivery, 10 to 12 weeks seems more realistic. I hope
everyone enjoys their shoes.
