[RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

2018-12-18 Thread Mike G
I think it depends on a variety of things including the rims you intend to
use and various other things related to where and how you ride. I purchased
a non-canti 650b Sam Hillborne in Spring 2017 and ride in Vancouver, BC. We
get a lot of rain and we have a lot of hills.I first tried using HED
Belgium Plus rims with Silver branded R559s and while I had no problem
with the brakes engaging, I found that the brake arms flexed enough while
braking going down hills or mountain roads to creep up and make contact
with the tires in the front.

After a few months of attempting (myself and via bike shops) to adjust the
brake pads to not contact the tires in the front and having no luck, I
swapped the front Silver brake for a Paul Racer. After another few months
of having the same problem, I had my wheels rebuilt using Pacenti Brevet
rims, which a few mm taller brake track than the HEDs. After this, I found
that the pads wouldn't run into the tire if adjusted just right, but would
still creep worryingly close to the tires when braking hard. This resulted
in me having to adjust the pads every few rides and probably not riding the
bike as much as would otherwise given how much I enjoy it.

This fall I threw in the towel, brought the bike to a frame builder and had
them weld Compass Center Pull bosses on the bike. It's been great since,
but if I were to do it all over again I would have just purchased a model
with canti bosses. In any event, if you don't need to brake too hard or if
you're using a rim with a really tall brake track, like an Alex Rims DM18
or something, you should probably be fine.

Cheers,

Mike

[RBW] Re: Call for bicycling pics – for Photo Mural

2018-12-18 Thread Peter Trasko
Hi Andi, I saw your call for bike photos on the RBW list. I can't post
there, but I thought you might like this album I've been collecting for a
while: https://imgur.com/a/FnXXW

I've been collecting what I think are really interesting or cool bike
pictures from the 20th century. They extend from the 1900s to the 1990s.
I've only been collecting those that have some interest besides being
merely old. Some of them have historical interest, like the early MTBers in
Marin county, or a group of black cyclists in the very early 1900s. Some of
them are just amazing shots, and I think all of them, somehow, exude a love
of cycling.

If you think some of these are cool, it would be nice if you could post the
link to your forum topic. I can't post there, but I would love to share
with the group.

Cheers,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread John Hawrylak
I use the Nitto saddlebag wire guard (Riv link below) with cantilever rear
brakes
https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-wire-guard-20189

with a Carradice type bag (Schwinn approved Model 00-015) a Large 70's
Japanese Schwinn bag and an Ostrich S-2. The bags are heavy enough to
contact the guard. The wire guard keeps all 3 bags off of the rear brake
cable. The bag sits on the guard and the cable is below the top of the
guard. My frame size is 21" C-T.

I think the Nitto wire guard would work for you

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I've done that too, with all sorts of bags, but it's too inconvenient (for
me, personally) -- I want a carrier that I can shove things in, cover up,
and click or strap closed. And I'll bet that the family sized 2 gallon bag
of Cheez Doodles won't take kindly to being cinched down on top of the bag.
(OK, I don't eat Cheez Doodles or Cheese Puffs or what have you, but I do
like the occasional bag of tortilla chips or potato chips.)

Really, the pair of Ortlieb Roller Packers at 40 litres is entirely big
enough, but I am a not-apparently-recovering bag fetishist and I am telling
my story.

at least 1 more Riv custom.

[RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Speaking of Fabio's chest, has anyone used both the largest Saddlesack and
this bag, and can you tell me how they compare in actual, usable grocery
loading? I found the Saddlesack Large too small for the bigger grocery
loads I carry; for example, I sometimes cram a 12 pack into a large pannier
along with puffy bags of this or that; Saddlesack Large was too small.

But the Fabio's Chest ought to carry more even than my pair of Roller
Packers, which carry as much as I need to carry, and it ought to be easier
to load. I'm thinking of the FC for the Hon Solo with a Nitto QR
attachment; on a Flite, the QR attachment makes the bag hang low, and that
ought to work just fine with the gap between saddle and high-sitting Dahon
rack.

For now, I've found a way to attach the Roller Packers to the Dahon
Ultimate Cargo Rack (
http://shop.dahonbikes.com/p/dahon-ultimate-rear-carrier?pp=8) so that they
clear my feet and still fit tightly on the rear rack of the 2003 Riv; but a
really big saddlebag would be even better.

[RBW] Re: Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread Jonathan K.
I recently encountered this exact issue on my Sam Hillborne. I mounted my
Medium Saddlesack, and it pushes pretty hard against the cable (on Shimano
CX 50 cantilevers), even with the support of a Nitto R14 rack. I just
ordered a Nitto Saddlebag Wire Guard from Rivendell yesterday to deal with
the issue.

[RBW] Re: Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread Cody Bartz
With large bags there is a good chance that it will rub the brake cable.
However, maybe if it is large enough to rest on a rear rack it may not. I
don't have experience with really large bags. I have a Sackville Small,
which is fairly large compared to normal saddlebags, and it rubs. I do have
a lot of space between my saddle and rack/tire though. I haven't used the
bag enough for it to do any damage. It makes marks on the bag, but hasn't
hurt the fabric. Smaller bags, such as a banana bag, don't rub as it stops
above the cable hanger.

I have been curious about this Nitto saddlebag wire guard (Riv link below)
https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-wire-guard-20189

Acorn sells this product to help with this issue:
https://www.acornbags.com/collections/accessories-all/products/leather-stand-off-with-strap

Another option is a bag support:

I should say that I got hit by a car and took a chainring to the Achilles in my
mid 20s. I was on crutches for a hike and my muscles really suffered. Then I
gained a TON of weight and could only walk a block before intense pain
happened. I cut out some trash food I was eating and learned Olympic lifts and
even did some cross fit. I’ve found that the key to my back is keeping below a
target weight and keeping up my whole body strength. Planks, squats, pushups,
table rows, pull ups etc are what I do these days. I dabble in kettle bells and
try not to fold my body like origami on the bike. But I can do that if I want.
It’s all about getting your body to be able to do what you want. Some need the
Aggro fold. Some don’t.

39 here with a lumbar surgery behind my back (pun intended).

If it wasn't for Riv and the Riv paradigm, I wouldn't be riding much. I've
given up my dreams of riding light and fast bikes for being comfortable all
day in almost all situations. And they do that for sure.

Re: [RBW] Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Depending on the height of your seat, the bag would have to hang pretty low to
be in contact with the exposed part of the cable. Even then, I would think it
might make a mark but wouldn’t damage the bag. There’s not enough movement in
the cable to do much harm.

[RBW] Centerpull/Cantilever brakes and saddle bags

2018-12-18 Thread Paul G
For those of you whole run centerpulls or cantilevers, do you have problems
with the rear brake cable and/or straddle cable wearing into saddle bags
that rest agains them?

It seems to me that a loaded Saddle Sack without a rear rack would
naturally press against the rear brake cable at or below the area of the
rear cable hanger. Does this cause and interference with the braking or
long term wear of the bag?

[RBW] Re: How do you track your mileage?

Since I care more about the route than the stats, I find ridewithgps to be
much more useful for navigating and research. I hate that strava forces
you to sign in just to see someone's route, and the map views are pretty
pathetic.

Like many of the previous responses, I also use Strava. It works quite well for
my needs - tracking mileage and sharing ride experiences with friends (although
my primary use is to track mileage). I began using it in June of 2013 and I’m
coming up on 47,000 miles. I primarily use my iPhone to record rides (super
easy) or I use a Garmin 520 for longer/complex routes. Uploading to Strava is a

Sweet! I see that the basket and net can barely contain your intellectual
pursuits. Thanks, Jenny!

*Oh, Andy, you might regret asking 😂 Kids, pets, I’ve got them all! *

No regrets here, just the opposite. Thanks for sharing, Leah. Great pics.

*Approx. how many photos do you need? Seems you will have to curate them
so I'm assuming only a few per person? *

Folks can send as many as they want. I won't be able to use all of them but
it is nice to have a selection (and to see people's images). So far, I have
received some amazing pics and a wide variety. However, I encourage more
submissions as we do have a whole wall to cover.

I'm 37 with a history of back problems. Two years ago I had a flair up with
sciatic pain that took me off the bike for a while and decided to make a
change. I started doing a planks once I was healed and haven't had an
injury since. I now typically do 2-5 minutes of a variety of plank stuff
each day while my coffee and oatmeal is cooking. Great way to start the day!

After reading reviews in the Apple App store I’ve concluded Ride Report would
not provide the kind of accuracy I want and get from Strava. I’m getting the
feeling that these apps that automatically record activities, while maybe
convenient, are still in need of a lot of work. My wife uses one for “steps”
taken during the day and is quite baffled by the seemingly random data she
gets. She thinks she sometimes gets “steps” when stuck in stop and go traffic.

[RBW] My back is pretty stoked on my Rivendell...

2018-12-18 Thread Palmer
Hi Nick,
Sorry to hear of your back issues. I had back issues in my 30’s as well. No
disc issues, but I would throw out my back every year or two and end up on the
couch for a day or three. I also have had inflammation issues my whole life.
The last 2 years have been the best back and inflammation wise in my adult
years. I am 54. I went the upright route most of 2017 even in group rides and
it helped me greatly. As flexibility and back strength increased, I could use
level with the seat drop bars, even able to ride in the drops when windy. The
deal for me started with reducing sugar and grains for inflammation. Have you
considered diet in your disc issue? I know it sounds crazy, but I fixed my
sleep apnea in 1 week by getting off grains and sugar completely for a week. My
doctors were unimpressed and said you wil be back. I have not been 23 months
later. I do not have an answer for you specifically, but there must be
something that can help with the elasticity of your disc. As I understand it,
your disc is like a bulging bike tire that allows your nerves to be pinched
between veritibrae. What also helped was riding fixed gear, upright at first
and now drop bars. Fixed really tightens up (in a good way) the back structure
and core. Even if I do not do any other core work, a decent fixed gear ride
make me feel good.
Sorry for the long post, I just want to encourage you to look at all angles.
Your back has a structural issue that if it wasn’t an impact injury, something
was weak in there that got weaker over time. Our bodies have an amazing ability
to heal if we give it the materials to repair and the rest or movement needed
to do the work.
Hope things go well for you.
Tom Palmer
