[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-07 Thread Jonathan D.
Has the tubing for the Sam changed over time? I thought it was the same as the
old Toyo Atlantis, which I thought was double butter and .9.6.9. I think I read
it in an old Riv Reader. I am not sure in the end it really matters but always
interesting to know. I have had a Sam and a Appaloosa and a Toyo Atlantis. They
all
ride like a Riv, and as Bill points out, can ride similar based on the build.
The long chainstay heavier tube lend to loaded touring well but skimmed down
feels stable and smooth. The Appaloosa almost feels like you are on water. It
turns and handles great but in a very smooth way that is unique. I almost sold
the Appaloosa until I switched it back to 42s. Now it rides more like the Sam I
sold. If I bought a Sam again (would love an old green Toyo Sam) I would build
it as a road drop bar bike. If I wanted Albatross or Choco bars I would get a
long chain stay bike.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-07 Thread dougP
They overlap about 80%. Is your Sam set-up primarily for touring, with
racks, etc? Or is it mostly a road / trail bike? As far as touring goes,
how much stuff you carry makes a difference. If you want to do 4 bag plus
a rack full of gear, the Atlantis work well. It actually rides "softer"
when fully loaded. It sounds like you've toured successfully with your
Sam.

The new Atlantis (MIT) has such longer chainstays that it rides
considerable different (actually better) than my Toyo built '03. I spent a
couple of hours test riding one at RBWHQ and came away seriously
impressed. It's definitely worth thinking about, esp if you'd like to have
2 bikes set up quite differently.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-07 Thread Adam in Indiana
A few years ago (I think it was when they started offering complete Sams) the
drawings for Sam frames were posted on the blug, and I think they were linked
from the Sam webpage as well. Anywho, for a 58 Sam (sorry, don't remember the
others) the top, down, and seat tube were single butt; .9/.7 for the top in
28.6, and 1.1/.8 for the down in 31.8. I remember the butts being a bit long,
too...60ish mm?

I'm pretty sure the seat tube at least has changed; new Sams take a 26.8
seatpost, whereas I seem to remember them taking a 27.2 in the past.

All that aside and whatever the case may be, my Sam rides great, so don't let
the numbers carry too much weight... Coming from a machining and fabrication
background, I just like knowing. There are so many variables in bike design
that it'd be foolish to get stuck on just one...

Just me size, as well.

But I think my budget will force me to stick with single top tubed, double

[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-07 Thread Drw
I agree with what Bill said. i had a sam and i now have an atlantis. the
sam is so versatile. it can be and do almost anything. the atlantis is a
bit harder to make "roady", though im sure it can be done. What i really
wanted was a sam that could take 50mm tires + fenders. i couldnt get that,
so i got the atlantis because that seemed like the closest thing

i also had a hunq and id say that the atlantis is more hunq with sammish
geometry than sam with bigger clearances.

my experience is with the very short lived, semi long chainstay, 650b MUSA
atlantis that existed for a few months pre MIT atlantis. This version is
straight gauge (so is hunq and i assume MIT is as well). Sam is butted, but
i dont know the specs.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis and Hillborne

2019-01-07 Thread Adam in Indiana
This is something I've wondered off and on as well. I have one of the newer
canti-Sams set up as a road bike (a 58cm, 700c wheels), but have been really
hankering for a MIT 56cm Atlantis (which would be 650b, and my 89cm pbh puts me
right on the edge according to Riv). Problem is, I'd want the Atlantis set up
like the Sam, essentially a wide-tire road and trail bike with drops.

I'm assuming the tubing on the Atlantis is a bit a stouter than the Sam, but
does anyone know the actual specs? I'm kind of a nerd for all that...

Re: [RBW] Maxxis Ikon Skinwall 2.2 tires

2019-01-07 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks, Forrest.

Essentially, I’m wondering if the Liteskin 2.1” Schwalbes are the closest I can
get for my Hunqabeam to a 2.1” actual diameter (on Cliffhanger rims)
non-existant Compass knobbie. I love the Steilacombs on my QB, and at 38mm,
they ride as supple (but with less depth of cushion) as my Racing Ralphs.

VINTAGE XT LOT: XT Pic Folder

All parts & bits cleaned, inspected and overhauled if/as I saw fit.
Originally destined for an RTP build that's going on the back-most burner
in lieu of recent Bantam deposit. Although not a true part of the XT group,
I'm including the 331 levers of the same SLR era/inscription in case you
wanna switch handlebar set ups. Let me know if you're not interested in
these; happy to keep 'em and knock a few bucks of the price. Here's the
list:
M732 canti set; w/ pads & straddles, very good condition.
M730 170mm OR 175mm triple (I've got a set in both lengths), bio pace rings
got recycled, 110/74 BCD, very good condition.
BL-L331 levers, hoods in great shape, very good condition.
M731 pedals; lower-profile version of the big honkin' M730 predecessors, I
believe to be toe cage-compatible, which I dig.
M733 levers, very good condition, includes the rubber covers, oversized
ferrules and brass cable head snuggler thingys.
M732 front derailleur, very good condition
M732 rear derailleur, very good condition
M732 thumb shifters; these are the ones that say 7 but have 8 clicks on SIS
Not pictured: QR skewers for seatpost, front & rear wheels, matching
unselaed bottom bracket (I'll get pics up soon...also need to take pics of
the 170mm arms)
(Not included in the sale of the lot is the 36h matching hubset, which I
possess. I have plans for the hubs but if you're really stoked on
more-or-less completing this groupo- let's talk.)
$175 for the lot

Am I forgetting anything? Prices don't include shipping. PPal Friends & Fam
or cover fees, please. Holler if you have any questions. PM/Text 724 757
9358. I'm in Portland, OR.

Thanks for lookin'!

has a tiny bit more offroad top-end because it takes bigger tires, but you
can ride trails on the Hillborne too. Both are extraordinary platforms for
executing a wide array of builds. Some people may build them different
from each other to broaden their differences. Some people may build them
the same, decide they are too similar and sell one.

My Hillborne is set up as a fast road bike that I use for brevet riding. I
just ordered an Atlantis which I'll be setting up as a drop bar mountain
bike. They are both awesome.

[RBW] Atlantis and Hillborne

For those that have ridden both the Atlantis and Hillborne, how similar are
they riding-wise? I have a lovely Hillborne in orange that I think is
great and have used on a couple week long bike tours, but have always

Garth: That's a very interesting discovery; I'll have to try the old
Polartec pullover this way, just to see how it does. I have to admit though
that when I first read your description, my skin crawled; I have ickey
memories of clammy synthetics in cold weather exercise. But the experiment
will cost nothing but a little, possible, discomfort.

But I do plan to seek out a cheap synthetic mesh top, ss, to try under a
cotton street shirt for winter riding -- mesh, shirt, perhaps light wool
pullover, and then shell.

Thanks, Patrick

We both shaved our unruly beards off

I personally have no use whatsoever for double top tubes on any bike in my

2019-01-07 Thread Irving

It's time for the 4th Annual Super Bowl Campout Weekend (RECAP: 2016
, 2017
, 2018
)

Grabbed the Spring Lake Group Campsite
 in
Santa Rosa this year.

   - Let's meet at Larkspur Ferry Terminal at 10am on *Saturday February
   2nd, 2019*

   - Here are your options:

   - Meet me at 8am at the Golden Gate Bridge and we'll bike 13 miles to
the Larkspur Ferry Terminal to meet with everyone

  - or you can drive and park at Larkspur Ferry Terminal

  - East Bay peepz can take a bus from El Cerrito BART to San Rafael

 and
then bike over to Larkspur Ferry Terminal

  - From Larkspur, we'll ride to Santa Rosa:
  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29100475

   - North Bay peepz can take the SMART train to downtown Santa Rosa

   - Or you can just drive to Spring Lake Regional Group Campsite (let me
know, since there's only 10 parking passes)

   - How many people can fit at the campsite? A LOT
    (actually 75, so please
RSVP via e-mail or Facebook Event
   )

   - Bring $5 - $10 cash for the campsite

If there's rain in forecast (week prior) = possible postponement,
otherwise, cya there!

Re: [RBW] How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-07 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I bought a C19 after I saw Riv sales were slow, mainly because I'm
commuting in the rain, and although I have a "waterproof" seat cover, it
really isn't that waterproof, and the leather seat gets quite damp. My
first impressions of the C19 are that it isn't too wide, (I ride on a bike
with drops), but I prefer wider saddles--I have a Brooks swift, and I
prefer wider saddles than the Swift.

Anyhow, it is colder than my leather saddle, and it is a bid harder than my
broken in leather saddle, but no harder than a new Brooks...

It will do fine for my rainy commuter bike setup. If I had a choice, then
I would probably go with a slotted version, but I don't know if a slotted
C19 exists.
