2019-04-04 Thread Howard Ramsay
Please look on the RBW website for the Stem - Nitto DirtDrop (MT-10) 8cm X
26mm with a 22.2 mm quill. You will be able to have plenty of height
adjustment and the proper clamp size. I do not know what angle of the
extension you wish for your bicycle. There are other models listed on the
RivBike and NITTO websites. The important thing is that you are
comfortable. Take a look here for detailed measurements. Remember your bar
clamp diameter is 26.0mm with the NITTO Noodle bars. Hope this helps.

I don't think the 26th would have such a long "toptube" for its seattube size.
Plus the under-tube cable routing would be to clear the child seat.

Shoot, hit send too early.

...feel right should help. Estimate how many centimeters back you think you
need, then subtract that from 11cm. I'll bet 8 or 9 would work.

I don't worry about matching tape to saddle cuz all my saddles are black, I
just pick a color that contrast well with the frame and is nice to look at
while pedaling. Greens and blues look killer with orange.

Have fun!

[RBW] Front Rack For Big Wald Baskets

2019-04-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I've used both SOMA racks. The big one works and looks great, but it's kinda
like always having a front load even when empty, it felt heavy and unwieldy to
me. The Demi has fixed struts that I felt placed the rack too far forward of
the headtube, and I wouldn't dare load 20 lbs. on it.

As the new owner myself of a MIT Atlantis with a heavy bias towards giving it
the best, my opinion is wait for the new rack.

[RBW] Front Rack For Big Wald Baskets

2019-04-04 Thread Tim Baldwin
I finally decided to pull the trigger and am awaiting the delivery of a new
Atlantis! I'm transferring most of the parts from other bikes but still
debating on the front rack. I'm currently using a Surly 24 pack rack and
just strapping a big Sackville basket bag on there. That rack won't
transfer to the Atlantis due to the fork crown mounts. I'd like to mount
one of the big Wald baskets on a rack for this bike. I would also like it
to have a mount for my dynamo light. Currently debating between a Soma
porteur rack, demiporteur (Soma or Rawland), or waiting for the new Riv
rack. I talked to Will on the phone when ordering and he said the new
basket rack should be coming in a month or two. So do I wait for that one
or try one of these in the meantime? I also have one of the big Surly front
racks but it's heavy and I rarely use front panniers. What racks are other
people using with the big baskets? I'd like to be able to carry around 20
lbs. Not any everyday thing but it does happen.

The Bombadil has more BB drop, shallower head tube angle, a bit more fork

[RBW] Re: Crust Towel Rack Drops on Your Riv? Which stem are you using?

2019-04-04 Thread Stephen W.
John,
Thank you. I've been riding with this setup for 8 months or so...maybe a bit
longer. I ride roads and light trail rides; can't ever say I've ever "mountain
biked"...I enjoy a nice saunter into the forest to make coffee and take
pictures. I have no complaints about the bars or stem...I also looked into the
3cm (W)right stem...the upside of the Technomic is that I saved a butt-ton of
money and that it matches all the silver bits 'n bobs on my bike. I've toured,
commuted, and lollygagged with this setup and can definitely reccomend it. Let
me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to share my experience. ✌

2019-04-04 Thread John Phillips
Hey Stephen,

Those photos are a big help. I've been waiting on the next generation
of Analog Cycles 3cm stems, but I've been leaning towards that 5cm
Technomic (1st choice), or the 8cm Dirt Drop or 7cm Technomic as runner
ups.

How long have you been riding that set up and how do you like it so far?
Any downsides or unexpected upsides?

Thanks again for posting your photos,

I was once wearing a similar costume on a morning multi-modal commute --
wool knicks, wool sox, wool jersey (actually, Rivendell Wooly Warm cycling
sweater over wool jersey), wool cycling cap, and twee little Vittoria
sheepskin-lined winter ankle-height cycling boots -- dapper indeed! --
that, admittedly, being old, *were* a wee bit turned up at the toe. I rode
5 miles to the cross-town bus, got on, and the (woman) drive asked me, "Are
you going to a costume party?" I think she was serious. I was crushed.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day. 56cm 650B Atlantis

2019-04-04 Thread esoterica etc

As a new owner of a 56cm 650b Atlantis, I have to precognitively say that the
new Atlantis is a perfect bike. I say that because my Atlantis came to me with
Choco bars installed and I really like them, but they’re not ideal for me. Like
Bill and Joe, I want me some drops on my Atlantis. I’m in the process of
putting together a drop bar cockpit, and I’m 99 & 33/100% sure that when it’s
completed and installed, it’ll make the Atlantis a perfect bike for me.

I also agree with Bill’s comparison between the old Atlantis and the new one. I
had a 700c Toyo Atlantis many years ago and thought it was a brilliant bike. My
new 650b Atlantis feels no less road-worthy, but a good deal more capable
off-road. Add to that the additional mounting points, greater stability with
the longer chainstays, and zero TCO, and you’ve got an even better iteration to
a machine that I felt was pretty close to perfect the first time around.

[RBW] Re: Weird Comments from the Peanut Gallery...

2019-04-04 Thread Robert Hakim
This wasn't so recent as it was memorable...
>
>
A few short days after my partner and I moved to our new neighborhood, we
were riding back from the store- groceries in the basket.
A spandex clad racer on an uber-stiff, ultra racey carbon rig slowed down
as he passed us and in a very odd, loony voice proclaimed:

"Ha! People! Real, live people! On bikes!"

Then he down-shifted and sped off.

The route we take to the store is quite popular with recreational roadies,
wannabee racers, and actual racers. Sometimes one will see things like
grocery bags dangling from aero-bars on tri-bikes. The coffee shop in the
neighborhood is often filled with the click-clack of road cleats and carbon
soles, and echoes with the elitist, competitive "I rode farther and faster"
chatter one would expect around so many racers.

I'm not quite sure if that rider was mocking us, or praising our
individuality for riding more practical bicycles in an area where "sport"
riding is the generally accepted style.

Either way, it was a very bizarre interaction, and both Emily and I were so
dumbfounded as to what had happened that we couldn't even think of a reply
as he raced away.
We just looked at each other, shrugged, and giggled.

I use the Nitto NTC-DX in 70cm reach with my towel rock on an MUSA Homer.
Important to know it is an MUSA Homer because the top tube is not as long

[RBW] Re: Time trial 'bike' - is it a thing?!

2019-04-04 Thread Garth

Such design was in vogue in the 80's/90's. That's a track bike,
obviously, and here is road TT bike ridden by 5 time TDF Champ Miguel
Indurain, A Pinarello ridden in 1992. He's 6'2 .
http://www.vintageluxurybicycles.com/indurain-tt

And some of various designs from the 80's on up. Before that riders used
their regular road bike for time trials, though they may have done some
extreme weight savings measures like drilling holes in various parts.
https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/racing/time-trialling-through-the-ages-25190
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/extras/drillium-extras.html

The only difference nowadayze is that everything for racing is carbon, but
the premise remains the same , speed speed speed ! . minimize weight
and aero drag. While these designs may appear odd in comparing to a Riv
kinda bike, a bike is still a bike regardless. We all have our "reasons" ,
none of which are any better/more/worse/less than any other. As if any
bike/ride/rider is more/less "special" than any other ! HaH ! Oh yes
listen to the cries yes-but . yes-but oh the yes-buts
. yes-but So What !Ahahaahaaha ! . and keep a rollin' on
our merry way ... over hill and over 'dale . yonder and hither
round and and round we go . and ever ever still here are are .

How many riders of bikes "like ours" can ride 188km on the backroads of
Colombia and Africa on a time trial bike ? Imagine the screams and cries
where's my big tires where's my long chainstays where's my
upright position where oh where is my darling Clementine !
Ahahahahahahaa ! Mad good riding for sure !

[RBW] Re: Original Rivendell Mountain Bike

2019-04-04 Thread R. Alexis
I have a Rivendell Mountain also. It was supposed to have it's own
proprietary lug set. Looks like there was not enough interest in the
Mountain and more in the Road and Allrounder that going with it's own lug
set was not feasible, so they used the Allrounder lugs with stouter tubing,
sloping top tube and vertical dropouts along with different geometry.

My Rivendell Mountain is all silver built with a mix of SunTour XC-Pro and
Wilderness Trail Bike parts. It has Scott AT-3 bars with Softride
suspension stem and Thudbuster suspension seatpost. Went with the
suspension stem and post because I was into Softride Beam bikes. Sometimes
wish I would have splurged for the cream contrasting headtube. Got it
because I longed for an MB-1. Went with silver on short moment notice when
I was called about it. Rivendell must have been wrapping up production
there and needed the color solidified to finish things up. Will try to get
some picks of it and post.

[RBW] recommendation for a flared drop bar with 25.4 clamp size

2019-04-04 Thread Joe Bernard
That's good information, Philip. I was about to throw in the towel on my RM-3s
cuz the hoods position isn't working out for me, but I guess I should rotate
them down, raise that long stem and give the drops a whirl. I never use drops
on "normal" dropbars, but these are pretty different. Maybe I haven't used them
correctly yet.

[RBW] recommendation for a flared drop bar with 25.4 clamp size

2019-04-04 Thread Philip Williamson
Oh, also, you don’t ride the RM-3 on the hoods.
You can, I do, but they should be high enough that the drops are the default or
control position. That’s within an inch of saddle height. That means when shit
gets real, you drop to the drops.
If you are doing long touring rides, maybe a less dirt oriented bar would be
better.

[RBW] recommendation for a flared drop bar with 25.4 clamp size

2019-04-04 Thread Philip Williamson
I don’t ride super long distances, just 40 or 50 miles at a stretch. Usually
much shorter, 10 or 20 miles. The RM-3 is my favorite bar. I like the Midge,
too; with bar-end shifters it works the same.

The RM-013 is much more “normal,” deeper, less flare, but still a great bar for
me. For a while the Woodchipper was my favorite, but it fell out of favor. Riv
said I’d love the Noodle, but I hated it. If Analog Cycles says you won’t like
the RM-3 I can’t imagine they’d approve of the Woodchipper.

I recommend trying out what you want, and reporting back.
