[RBW] Re: Favorite All-around Drive train?

2019-11-24 Thread Nick Payne
I have several bikes setup with 42-29 chainrings and Shimano 11-34 or 11-40
11-speed cassettes, and I find that gearing pretty ideal for the sort of
riding I do - usually 60-100km rides over undulating terrain.

Here's one using a pair of TA Carmina cranks with a 94BCD spider. A 107mm
BB gives a 44mm chainline with a Q of 153mm:

Here's another using a pair of Middleburn RO2 cranks, also with 94BCD
spider. This frame has a 386EVO bottom bracket, and the Q is 157mm.

Another using a pair of Ritchey Logic 94BCD cranks. A 98mm Phil Wood BB
gives the correct chainline when setup as a double, and the Q is 146mm.

2019-11-24 Thread dougP
That's a great trip. The serendipity of everything is refreshing. So many
people over-plan their trips & end up with a schedule & miss lots of
opportunities. My wife & I have rented bikes for several tours in Europe
(just too much hassle shipping the Atlantis) and always gotten something
perfectly serviceable that met our needs. Never though of buying a used
bike but that sounds a good choice.

Read "The Cyclist who went out in the cold" by, I believe, Tim Moore
(guessing on the author but sure on the title). He's a mad Englishman who
rides from Finland to Turkey via the Iron Curtain trail. Your experience
will make the tale relateable, & you'll congratulate yourself for not
starting in winter.

[RBW] Ride report: Latvia, Estonia, Finland

2019-11-24 Thread Michael Morrissey
Hi Riv-listers,

This summer I took the best bicycle ride I have ever been on in my life. In
the last few years, I’ve made an effort to go on better vacations. Two
summers ago I bought a BMW GS and rode from NYC to Yellowstone and back.
The BMW GS has the best reputation as a travel bike, so I wanted to try
one. It was great, but I decided I wanted to do things a little differently
on the next trip. Instead of an expensive dream bike with all the farkles,
I decided to just get a whatever bike. One of my best friends moved to
Finland, and has invited me there for years, so I finally took him up on
it. He told me I should do a longer trip and check out some of the
neighboring countries, so I decided to fly into Riga, Latvia and travel to
Helsinki. The second I booked the trip, I started thinking “hmmm… this
should be a bike trip.” I thought about bringing my Rivendell, but I didn’t
want to risk having it stolen. It’s only 200 or so miles from Riga to
Helsinki, so I figured I could do it on any old bike. I emailed a bunch of
shops in Riga and one responded. I told them I wanted to buy a bike for 100
to 400 euros, and they said sure no problem, they’d hook me up for 100
euros with one of their old rental fleet.

I packed my bags. I brought 2 ortlieb bags, my favorite hoodie, a Brooks
Cambium saddle, Adidas sneakers, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of pants, my Giro
helmet, and my camera. Here’s what I didn’t bring: a sleeping bag, a tent,
bicycle-specific clothing, any food, a water bottle, tools, a camp stove. I
wanted to travel as light as possible and maybe even blend in.

I got to Riga and was so excited that I could barely sleep. Also my airbnb
wasn’t really someone’s home, it was more of a college dorm. College kids
were in it, coming home at all hours. I went to the bicycle shop as soon as
I could. I paid 100 euros and bought the bike!

They sold me an older Gazelle bicycle. It wasn’t a Rivendell - it was
aluminum - but it would do! It had Shimano Alivio components, 700x35 or 38
tires, V brakes, no fenders. It rode just fine. It even had a back rack for
my Ortlieb bags! I had them change the seat to my Brooks, added a
Rivendell-spec safety triangle, and I took off. I rode all around Riga. I
went to the Vespa shop, the art museum, up the Radisson building for the
best view of the city. It was great. I spent another day there seeing
everything. Then, I took off.

I was so excited to ride on that first day that I woke up at 5 in the
morning. When I travel, my official philosophy is
“freestyling/freewheeling” which is a joke of mine - that I didn’t even
decide on what to call the not-planning-ahead. It’s not all improvisation -
I do browse the website Atlas Obscura. The streets seemed dead in the
morning. Traffic was so much lighter than what I’m used to commuting to
work in New York City. I went to the Bicycle Museum in Saulkrasti. It was
my goal to get there before it closed for the day, but I crushed the riding
and got there before it opened. You Rivendell fans would love it. It was
just the garage in the backyard of someone’s house. They collected bicycles
from Latvia only. They had all sorts of cool bicycles and interesting
parts. There was a full-suspension wooden bike made by an engineer in the
1930s that looked like a 1990s mountain bike. It was great. Even their
collection of head-badges was amazing. I looked at everything and left to
keep riding. I ended up just riding and riding that day. My navigation was
just hotels that I had started on Google Maps. I hadn’t realized camping is
actually really popular there. I marked a campground called “Kemping
Klintas” and aimed there. I got there around 4 PM, really tired. My legs
were mushy and I had done around 50 miles from Riga. I felt so tired that I
thought someone else was going to have to lift me off of my bicycle. The
last 3 miles were on dirt washboard roads to the campground.

When I arrived at the campground, they told me they just had tent camping,
and all their cabins were full. I told them I didn’t have a tent - was
there any place I could stay? It was just me and my bike. They made me a
deal that I could stay in their sauna! They had a sauna shaped like a boat
that overlooked the Baltic sea. They gave me a blanket and a camping
mattress, and charged me 15 euros. I didn’t bring any food, but they had a
restaurant. I was worried I wasn’t going to find much vegetarian food and
I’d be subsisting on cashews and apricots, but I got a huge plate of
roasted veggies and quinoa that looked more like a “vegetarian option” at a
wedding. It was great.

The next morning, I woke up chilly. Ironically, the sauna was cold. It was
overcast, and I rode out of the campground. There were some dirt roads
along the Baltic with incredible views. There were lots of old farmhouses.
But, most of the dirt roads spit you out back to the main highway. That
morning, almost as soon as I hit the highway, I met two ot

The Shimano MTB 1x11 system that came on my protoGus is ugly (the shifter
is an aircraft carrier strapped to the handlebars wherever they happen to
fit and be accessible, which is only one position on bullmoose or
equivalent wavy or Jones bars) but shifts beautifully and stands up to a
lot of abuseage, and this from a guy who loves the simplicity of fixed gear.

[RBW] Re: MKS Grip King Monarch Pedals

2019-11-24 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
And now for something completely different ... at least re the pedal
question. My priority is the bearings and comfort underfoot at hight
pressure. I'm hard on bearings. Rocks, roots, and stupid wet, muddy, snowy,
freezing, sludgy riding will do that. VPs lasted me a matter of months and
generally didn't repair well for me. MKS cone and bearing pedals last me a
year and can be greased well for another year. But MKS cartridge pedals
have lasted beautifully so far, beyond a year and counting, so they are my
preference. My experience has been stack height is not a material factor. I
personally do not like the feel of the pedal shape of the Grip Kings
underfoot (my forefoot is my widest part of my foot, the narrowest part of
the pedal, so the GK's have great fore/aft stability, minimal lateral
stability for me). MKS All Ways pedals are a delight, as are their touring
pedals. If riding in the snow, touring pedals win, as pressure on the pedal
increases grip and discards snow, whereas most pedals it compresses the
snow into ice and renders them unridable until chipped off ... not fun at
temps near zero. Note: I ride fixed gear, no retention, on both All Ways
and Touring pedals, and my Gus has some stupid amount of gears and I ride
touring pedals for it. They just handle the bashing and crashing and
freezing and thawing and muddy mucky wet wonderfully.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: MKS Grip King Monarch Pedals

2019-11-24 Thread The Snag
I don't notice a huge difference but I also use the two bikes differently,
the MKS are on a MTB rig so cornering is not as noticeable. I measure the
main platform of the Monarch at 17mm, more like 22mm with the bumps but
that's not going to affect how tight a turn you can make. VP's website
calls theirs 16mm, but they taper a bit towards the edge. For reference,
the original MKS grip king's platform is 22mm, they seem noticeably thicker
than the Monarch.

Again, out of the three I think that the Monarch is the superior pedal.
Width, thickness, length, they just feel right.

[RBW] Re: Favorite All-around Drive train?

2019-11-24 Thread aeroperf
To answer your question, my Sam came with a Sugino double 40-26, and what I
ended up with was 46-36-26 on a 110 BB with 11-34 cassette.

But regarding front cranks, you can always build your own.
You can still buy an XD2 compact crank, if you liked that, both the double
and the triple. Nashbar, ModernBike and others still stock them.
And you can always get different chainrings.

If you want a narrower Q, change the bottom bracket. Pull the crank arms
and measure the bottom bracket you have. Buy the next size down BB-UN55
and have your friendly local bike shop install it.
It should be about $25 for the new BB and $25 for the shop.

Just bear in mind that a Riv chainline is typically in between a mountain
bike and a road bike. So any given road crank installed on a Riv wants to
live just slightly wider than if installed on a road bike. It seems to be
the nature of the design.

I got new stuff that came in boxes, I got other stuff I don't need that could

boxes! All prices plus shipping.

1. Carradice uplift thingy that mounts to saddle rails. It has a name we all
know which I inexplicably can't think of right now, $30

2. Nitto Bullmoose threadless, will look smashing on your new Gus, $80

3. Shimano BR550 cantis, marketed as 105 level to work well with road STI, I
used them with those thin-blade Tektro mtb levers, Kool Stop pads with life
left, $30
(maybe can bundle with the levers, too, I forgot to take a pic of those)

4. Shimano Deore fd, 34.9 with 31.8 shim, bottom pull, $5

5. Barely used Rivet saddle with cutout, don't know model name. Was sold to me
for crazy money as ti rail but nah, it's steel. My loss cuz I didn't tell the
guy I overpaid whaddyagonnado, $90

6. Shimano XT 8-speed era rd, the 739 model and finest XT ever, used and
scuffed but still pretty cuz look at it!, $20

7. Microshift "8-speed" fd, 31.8, $5

8. For reasons I can't remember I have one Paul Klamper long pull with pads, $80

Joe, I have never tried Silver cranks. I think I have a 113mm bottom bracket if
I recall correctly (2009 Sam set up for Sugino triple).

[RBW] Favorite All-around Drive train?

2019-11-24 Thread John Bokman
Curious: What's been your favorite all-round drive train on your riv(s)?

I was a big fan of the Sugino 46-36-26 tripple, but wanted a narrower
Q-factor, and never used the granny ring. I now use a 44/30 x 11/32 which
is nice in some ways, but I don't get the super smooth shifting I got from
the original (on my 2009 Sam). In fact, i've never gotten better shifting
than the original Sam setup.

I like the idea of Riv's double, but it's a wider Q than I want, and with
the big ring at just 38 teeth, I deem the top end to be a bit lacking for
the type of riding I do.

I've thought of using their Silver 44/34/24, but again, it's a wider Q than
I want, and I would hardly ever use the granny.

I've got indexing on another bike (Shimano 105, 11x28), and it shifts
flawlessly, with a narrow Q from the Velo Orange 46/30 cranks. I'm not
interested in going indexing on the Riv, just a data point.

[RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike

2019-11-24 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
I can not recommend the Copenhagen wheel enough for any Riv application.
Joe was correct I initially had my NOS purchased single speed on my Quickbeam.
My personal experience was it extended my SS rides into 35-40 miles vs mid
20’s. I personally have left it in ECO mode after one experimentation with the
other boost modes. While riding it just feels like a continuous tailwind of
sorts. Mostly noticed while taking off from stops or attempting accelerations
for any occasion.
It has now been moved onto a 68cm Bombadil and performs just as magnificently.
Looking to pick up a 26 inch multigeared one to go on my wife’s 53cm Atlantis
to potentially lengthen the distance we cover on 90 minute -2hrs rides together.

Re: [RBW] Re: Copenhagen wheel Rivs vs ebike

2019-11-24 Thread Joe Bernard
That's an average range for most ebikes, and can be stretched considerably on
the Copenhagen with judicious use of the Eco and 0 settings. One of the things
I like about it on my Riv is it still pedals like a Riv, I can ride with very
little assistance on flats and click it off completely for descents.

That said, I *am* an urban rider. If you really want to tour with juice on a
Riv you need a system that accepts switching batteries mid-ride.

IIRC the maximum range on the Copenhagen Wheel is 30 miles.  That
doesn't compare well with most e-assist bikes, and while that might be a
fine range for an urban commuter, Rivs can be so much more.

For anyone who has been looking for an opportunity to try the Copenhagen
wheel, I just got a black Friday email from them offering the wheel for
$995 (it was $1,100 after tax and shipping).

Use code: HOMEFORTHEHOLIDAYS

I tried out a couple of years ago and was impressed with how intuitive it
felt. Since then, I've been thinking about one of these and finally went
for it today. I'll probably install it on my Atlantis - hope that's not
heresy! The idea is to make winter commuting a bit shorter to keep riding
through Jan/Feb here in Boston.

Anyone else tried the wheel on something other than a Clem, an All-Rounder
or a Rosco?

[RBW] Re: New vs. old Homer geometry, ride characteristics

2019-11-24 Thread tc
Luis, thanks for posting. I'm gonna try this extra cork grip idea. I had
seen this video by Dan Stroud a while ago,
where he moved his brake levers fwd of the 'normal' position for the
Albatross bar. (But he extended his grip area with what looks like small
sections of ESI grips). Thanks for the reminder!

I sent a pm about stand over. I wish this were a 58, so if someone wants to
trade their 58 for a larger size, let me know.

Best regards,

Thanks Eric, I plan to hold out for something popping up on the used market -
I’m guessing about the time those hillibikes start shipping. What made you sell
the two H’s?

[RBW] Re: How to make your own saddle bag quick release for $1.00. This also works for sprung saddles.

2019-11-24 Thread Nick Payne
This is what I did to attach a Goldback Niño saddlebag to a Berthoud
saddle. The straps on the Niño were too far apart to fit the slots in the
frame of the saddle, so I zip-tied a piece of 15mm diameter "carbon fibre"
tubing (given how cheap it was, I strongly suspect it's actually
fibreglass) to the slots in the saddle frame and the straps on the
saddlebag attach outside those. The saddlebag can't move sideways in either
direction, so the piece of tubing only had to be a few millimetres longer
than the minimum length needed:
