Re: [RBW] Photos of my Roadeo, set up for brevets

2020-04-29 Thread Paul Y
Thanks Patrick!

I'm in Singapore.

The brake levers are Riv's long standing favourite Shimano Tiagras (they
went by another name when I bought them). The hoods wore off a long time
ago and I could never find replacements. I don't know if it happens in
temperate climates, but in warm and humid climates, the rubber tends to
melt.

I used a file to smoothen the sharp metal edges before wrapping them in
twine. The twine is comfortable on long rides with gloves, I think there
would be chaffing without.

Saddlebag is a Carradice zipped roll bag. I have a Sackville banana sack on
the way.

[RBW] Re: Tool for fender stays

2020-04-29 Thread tuolumne bikes
I've been able to cut them with bolt cutters without having to mark the
stays and remove the fenders. For SKS, they get covered with the rubber
tips, so I don't file them. But if you use bolt cutters, please wear
glasses. I've had the cut ends shoot clear across the room.

[RBW] ISO Silca ** non-Ultimate** Impero, Silver, for 52 1/2 cm space beneath top tube

2020-04-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I can't find real Impero online; am I right in thinking that this is no
longer made? For shame.

Does anyone have one of the real ones FS or FT? Mine is VG and 49 cm long
between longest end of handle and very end of barrel, not including head; I
need about 4 cm more -- or, for those of you more knowledgeable than I
about the Impero's sizing categories, I need one to fit a 52 1/2 cm space
underneath the top tube.

Happy to trade my 49 for yours in **silver**; or if you can't see beyond
money, tell me how much you want for yours in **silver** one in VG
condition. Head not included; nor do I need one.

The recent thread on frame pumps with hoses reminded me that the Impero is
actually a lot better for my mid-pressure-range Elk Passes than the HpX,
and I just bought another valve core tool so that, if the valve gets
blocked with sealant -- the Lezyne Road Drive can push through blockages,
the Impero can't -- I can remover and clean.

I'd put the 49 cm back on the Matthews, which has a head tube bump, but
I've installed a frame bag under the tt.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Nice, Paul. You said "international orders;" where are you?

I like the "make do" build, particularly the twined brake lever bodies. Are
those EX brake levers? I'll have to remember that for my pair, without
hoods, and hoods impossible to come by. Also for the 7410 levers, once my
(expensive!) stash of extra hoods is used up. I take it -- if you ride that
bike on brevets -- that the twine does not chafe the web between forefinger
and thumb?

And kudos on the tail light wire, from someone who is far too obsessive
about such things.

[RBW] Re: Intro to Group!! Toyo AHH

2020-04-29 Thread Craig Montgomery
Hey Garrett,
Great looking bike. The blue/cream combo is nothing short of elegant.
Once saw an original Duesenberg with the same color scheme, Blue body with
cream fenders, and if it's on a Duesenberg it's gotta be cool. Now some
advice from a grumpy old fart who's done a lotta touring. Your Homer can
easily handle a camping load. There's nothing wrong with the frame or a
rear load (though you should always balance front and rear, don't do rear
only). It's the rack. The struts are too long, thin and not triangulated. No
wonder the load was trying to do the driving. Get yourself a real touring
rack and you're headed for the high country. And you don't have to go all
out and get a Nitto Big Rack or Tubus Cosmo or somesuch. There are some
perfectly good heavy duty racks for half the price. Salsa, Soma, Topeak,
Tor Tec. There's a bunch that'll handle the job. I just don't want you to
be discouraged over what you may view as a defect in the bike.

I just pre-ordered a 54cm Orange Roadini from Rivendell. I've had only 1

looked at the Crust Bombora and BMC Road+ but ultimately decided on a Riv.

2020-04-29 Thread Leah Peterson
I am a fan of gray! I really do think grilver is one of the best colors RBW
ever created. My teenager’s little Clem is so regal - and even more so how he’s
got it adorned - monochromatically. I usually like a lot of pizazz, but the
grilver stands on its own.

I also love the RBW blue that Roberta references (I have it on my Clementine),
mostly because it refuses to be just one hue and is an array of sparkly
blues/greens. RBW got that one right, too.

But I LOVE red, and I think it looks great put with the dove gray in this
custom.

Oh, I hope the new Chev comes in that color!

And, I hope you get a new bebe to grow up with your current cutie-pie bebe.

[RBW] FS: 56cm, 26" wheeled Toyo Atlantis

2020-04-29 Thread Christopher Cote
I'm reluctantly putting my Atlantis up for sale. I'm sure I will regret
doing this, but it's not really filling a necessary niche in my bike stable
at this point. This is a Toyo built Atlantis from the early 2000s. Frame
size is 56cm and the wheels are 26". I bought the frameset used on this
list last year and built it up with a mix of parts on hand and new stuff.
The paint on the frame and fork has plenty of honest beausage. The worst of
which has been touched up with some sparkly green nail polish that looks OK
from 10 feet away. I recently acquired a bottle of official Atlantis
touch-up paint, which I will include with the sale. No dents or other
functional damage to the frame or fork. I'm looking for $1400 plus shipping
from zip 04093. Local pickup in southern Maine is encouraged if you're
local! I can substitute the Surly Open Bars with a Nitto drop bar, and I
have a selection of Technomic stems if you want a different length. What I
don't have on hand is a spare pair of long-pull drop bar levers, so if you
want the drop bar option, you'll need to provide your own levers.

Bars: Surly Open Bar
Stem: Nitto Technomic, 10cm (might be 11cm, I'll have to double-check)
Grips: Ergon GP1 Bio Cork
Brake Levers: Shimano Deore
Headset: Shimano Ultegra
Shifters: Dura Ace 9spd bar-ends mounted to Paul Thumbies
Brakes: Shimano Deore V-brakes, Koolstop salmon rear pads, Koolstop
low-clearance, E-bike compound front pads
Cranks: Sakae with 24/36/46 rings, 170mm
Front Derailleur: Vintage Shimano Deore
Rear Derailleur: Shimano LX
Cassette: 11-36t, 9 speed
Wheels: Shimano Deore Hubs, Sun Rhyno Lite rims
Tires: Compass/Rene Herse Rat Trap Pass
Pedals: MKS RMX
Seatpost: Ritchey one-bolter. Chopped and scratched
Saddle: Giant brand placeholder. You'll want to provide your own Brooks!

Thanks Rich! The badge looks great on red, doesn't it! That was a factor I

[RBW] Re: Joe's Custom

2020-04-29 Thread Joe Bernard
Michael: I saw a Kirk frame in the gallery at Joe Bell's site that had these
colors. In discussion with JB we variously referred to it as Ferrari Red and
Porsche Red, after it was painted he said the specific shade he used is called
Rad Red. I believe Richard Sachs was mentioned as having used that one at some
point, but my memory is a little vague on that. I'm not sure I see pink in it
but it's definitely a bright red, I was specific that I wasn't going for any
kind of brick-type darker shading.

Collin: Yes we discussed the Hunqapillar, or more specifically Mark @ Riv's
custom on Joe's gallery page which was the predecessor to it. The idea was to
do a lightened up version of that scheme with the Kirk frame's colors. Worked
out nicely, don't you think?

Brian: Save your money and I'll sell it to you when I'm too old and creaky to
ride. See ya in 20 years! 

We agree wholeheartedly. The question is, what gives the best results when
you store more bread than you can eat fresh? The premise for the question
is that I'm not going to bake fresh bread daily or even every other day.
Freezing -- as you pointed out -- is often this next-best thing.

cake right out of the freezer (pound cake popsicles!).

Re: [RBW] Re: Bread (and bikes)

2020-04-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all. It seems that freezing is the best method, given our climate
and the large amount I like to make at 1 time, and our irregular (but often
large) bread consumption. Freezing works well, as I said, with the after
results of toasting or even judicious nuking much like that of fresh bread;
certainly fresher than leaving it out for more than 24 hours.

I like a rather moist loaf. I am still using the 1 lb bag of Red Star yeast
I bought from Costco a long while ago. Flour has been Bob's Red Mill bread
flour (King Arthur "white whole wheat" was the only flour left at Sprout's
3 weeks ago, so I bought that on the chance that it might be my last option
for a while), but others with even more experience say that as long as its
decent quality flour, just buy what is cheapest with those criteria. My
brother, even better than I, uses bulk Sprout's unbleached and WW flour, I
think.

As to quality, my daughter prefers my bread to even the higher-end store
loafs (loaves? Dwarfs? Hoofs?), so I guess I'm doing well enough. (Proud to
say that my daughter grew up with home cooked scramble and fries for
breakfast, and home made mac and cheese and chicken nuggets for dinner as a
small girl, graduating on to more sophisticated but still home-made fare;
she's a modestly accomplished cooker herself now, at almost-19.)

2020-04-29 Thread Michael Baquerizo
Joe, did you spec that red yourself? How would you describe it? I'm getting a
Sam painted before it comes to o me and I am trying to get a particular red
that Richard Sachs used for a season recently. Your red seems a similar 'light
red' leaning, aka on its way to way to pink but not quite. It could obviously
just be the photos and my phone but curious to hear your input. Thanks in
advance.

[RBW] Re: Bread (and bikes)

2020-04-29 Thread Garth

That's just in Patrick, there is just substitute for freshly baked bread.
Myself I would leave whatever portion I'd eat for a day or 2, then freeze
the rest the same day as baking. Don't wait until it starts going stale to
freeze it. All frozen/canned food processors do their work with freshly
cooked goods. I grew up a few blocks from a Libby's canning factory, with
it's distinctive Corn Cob water tower. Every summer come harvest season
local truck after truck would bring the beets, peas, sweet corn and carrots
and such at peak ripe season. We'd walk down and get a dozen ears o' corn
for literally pennies and wow was it great ! Since the cannery was so
close, in the summer at night the "mischievous brothers" and I would go
there and they'd start throwing these whoppin' huge carrots at each
othernot to mention all the tomatoes in the shadows of the night while
roaming about the back yards. Come to think of they were always propelling
something, be it rocks, pine cones, apples and whatever they could get
their hands on prolly because one of their parents was so coldly strict
this was their only form of release from the constricting wrath of
dictatorship from within the walls of their prison/home. Here's to you
John, Matt and Christopher

Back to baking and freezing though... my Mom growing was always making food
to put in our deep chest freezer. She used to make these raisin filled
pastry type cookies that were to die for. I've still never seen or heard of
anything like them. She'd even do bone broths and soups for winter time. Oh
she also made jams and jellies with fresh local fruits like Crabapples,
Plums, Berries and Apples from a local orchard. I had most wonderful peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for lunches !

Isn't this the adventure of Life you just never know where It's
going/happening. One minute you're baking bread and wondering how to store
it the next you're in the midst of summer in a corn field... and for a
one little moment you wonder "how did I get *here* ?" . and in the next
breath ... "does it really matter ?" . heeheehee ... nope not one
bit. You know I hear lots about "going on adventures ... go here, go
there go go go .. but with a keen eye . it's becomes obvious
the "adventure" ... is "you" like a seed that sprouts all by Itself
and on the instant ... "the World" appears in
IT-Self-Celebratory-Magnificence. Yes . this is IT, and IT is this.
