My totally biased opining of the 4 choices is number 4, all lilac. Second
choice would be an "other", all yellow. The split colors look like you took
cut 2 frames and morphed them together, just odd.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-11 Thread masmojo
I fully understand the desire to consolidate, but there's a reason you have a
Redwood & a Clem in the first place & that reason is still valid. If you have
the space & you don't need the money then I would stand pat & possibly tweak
both bikes to further distinguish them from each other.
Seems pretty pointless to swap the Redwood for anything else if it can take
47mm tires, especially since the Clem can go far past that.
The Redwood seems like a good versatile bike good for most things while the
Clem can be more offroad specific, with fatter tires. Between the two you've
got just about everything covered. Especially if you find a road bike not
really needed.

Another option is one bike with two sets of wheels. I have a Crust Bombora; one
of the first things I realized about it was that: with smooth tires it excels
at being a decent road bike and with chunkier knobbies it's great offroad. As a
result I've got two sets of wheels for that bike! Another advantage of two
wheel sets is being able to just change wheels if you have inflation issues
(flats) 🤣

2020-08-11 Thread Mark Roland
This is what I suggested he do for the Clem, which is similar to the
Bombora in terms of range-- a wheelset with some skinny 48mm Switchbacks
for the pack training ride, then pop on the set with 2.6" knobbies for
hitting the woods. Best to have rims with same width and brakes set up to
open wide, but then good to go. If, as the subject line says, you truly
want/need to get to one bike for the time being. Personally, for most on
this list, I think that is an aspirational fantasy for some of us, but not
likely to happen all that often. Everyone with only one bicycle please
raise your hand

Brendan,

It's all yours! PayPal friends and family to this email is my preferred
method of payment. Please include your address and I'll get it packed
shipped this week. Thanks!

P.S. These are the best designed bags on the market. I'm only selling it
because I went to a one rackless bag lifestyle so now I have a jumbo jammer
which fits my now suburban needs.

It's been interesting reading through these comments. This last bit here,
regarding the "lift tube," caught my attention. I LOVE this lift-tube
function. When carrying the bike up some stairs, or lifting it over an
obstacle in road or trail, it great. Keeps my pump out of harm's way, and
easier on the shoulder. And I bet this rainbow tube weighs less than 8
ounces. Maybe Grant could answer this question.

IIRC The horns of the Crazy Bar have a 23.8mm OD and a ~20mm ID to
accommodate common bar end/TT brake levers, so running road levers would
work if one wanted to save the bar end real estate for something else. A
duo of mirrors? Bar end shifters? a couple knocks to make a slingshot?

I'm in agreement with that. I'd say any of the colors as a solid would be
better than any of the splits. I have a coupled All Rounder and like how the
couplers' design evokes a continuity of the frame tubing 'underneath', almost
like a piece of jewelry wrapped there. I think splitting the paint wrecks that
illusion.

Re: [RBW] SS Coupler Military Bike stupid idea?

2020-08-11 Thread Yuhan Wu
Thanks Michael! 84 trek 620 is the first vintage steel touring bike I ever
owned! It rides great but I didn't like the vintage components. Sold it
years ago. Still miss the beautiful pewter color under sunlight. I don't
know what kind the paint they used back then. The quality feels better than
many modern bikes including Riv in my opinion. Maybe because it's thicker?
The paint on my hunqapillar gets chips pretty easily.

I couldn't find any bikes with a coupler in the middle of TT on the
internet. So I was skeptical. I want to learn people's experience before
going to a builder. Thanks for the input! I think the disconnects shouldn't
be too hard to fix by swapping out cables. But the disconnect would be too
far away from the cable housing stop which is not ideal?

[RBW] Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread Brady Smith
Sounds like a great idea to me. I have a Jamis Aurora that I've rebuilt with a
bunch of Riv-esque parts over the years, and I've always hoped to swap out the
frame for a Sam when the time came. My only reservation is that the Jamis is my
daily commuter, and it manages a nice balance of being nondescript but also a
pleasure to ride. I have secure bike parking at my school, but a Rivendell as a
daily commuter in a big city feels like more of a risk than I'd like. That
said, a lot of the people I encounter riding my similarly Riv-ed out BMC
Monster Cross think it's an antique I rescued from a garage sale, so maybe a
similarly appointed Sam wouldn't attract as much attention as you'd think.

Ben,

As far as I know all phil wood bolt on hubs allow this. Any hub brand where the
bolt provides the “shelf” that the dropout rests on will work the same. With
the bolts removed all the way the hub is only as wide and the hub flange and it
can drop out.

Not CS but also a fan of this phil wood feature because I like fenders

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread maxcr
I did this many years ago and never looked back. I had a frankenstem on my
cross-check to get the bars where I wanted them. To me the Sam felt far
more comfortable and stable, on top of that I outfitted it with fatter
tires and a nicer rack which made the bike more functional for things
beyond my commute.

If you're thinking about it and you can afford, you should do it - I'm
confident you won't regret it.

Good to know. I've only used Surly and crappier track hubs(from 2nd hand
bikes so not my choice to start with), and all of them have the protruding
shelf.
Maybe I'll add having the rear wheel of my QB rebuilt with a Phil Wood hub
to the projects list.
It'll definitely make fender season easier.

Re: [RBW] Just to be Clear ... (On Rivendell and Crazy Conspiracy Theories)

2020-08-11 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Quickbeam fans at a rally in Tennessee in 2018.

They had gathered to demand the truth behind the demise several years earlier
of the bike they affectionately call the “Q”-Beam (or just the “Q”), insisting
that the switch to the SimpleOne was related to the creation of a “One" World
State.

“It’s so obvious,” said one Q-Beam fan. “One day, there’s the Q, and the next
there’s the same bike—the SAME BIKE—with a different name. Q was disappeared by
the liberals in Walnutty Creek.”

Rivendell has responded officially to the allegations, although a spokesman
posted on a pro-Rivendell subreddit that, “The truth is out there. Everything
else is just #fakeblug.”

Re: [RBW] Re: Chauncey Matthews Riv-cloned Road Bike for Road, take 2

2020-08-11 Thread Patrick Moore
No, though 1 reason was that I had only the 1 Pasela which I acquired as a
a design gauge.

There was perhaps 5 mm of clearance between top of Pasela and bottom of
flat-head allen bolt, and I could have ridden it so, but I wanted the fork
made right, which means room for a real 45 and 10 mm under fender bolt.

Once all is as it ought to be, I hope to get some Naches Pass tires and
*really* try out the design!

Chauncey was waiting for a new (biplane; Pacenti?) fork crown a weeke ago.

Which leads to a dilemma, one that can only afflict the privileged: should
29s or 42s be the default tire? I'm inclined to keep the 29s as the "main"
tire, since they ride so ineffably well on pavement, and since the bike
handles so wonderfully with them. I personally have no use for tires fatter
than, say, 32 mm, for pavement, even less than perfect pavement; given our
sandy soil, I prefer *real* width, as in 60 mm, and 700C to boot, for off
road. The Naches Passes would be occasional, "just 'cause I feel like it"
tires.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread Mark Roland
Interesting question. The way it is posed makes it sound as though there is
a checklist you can look at to compare point by point, then tally it up and
somehow calculate whether the additional cost is worth it. But most
bicycles generally don't work in that linear fashion. It truly is the old
"whole greater than the sum of the parts" cliche. And what is going to work
best for any particular rider.

While I've been a customer of Rivendell for a long time, until recently, I
never had one of their bikes, for two main reasons.First is I like older
bikes, and I generally don't like buying things new if I don't have to.
Second, I always felt I could get close to Rivendell ride quality with the
older bikes.

But in the last, I don't know, 10 years or so, that is probably not as
true, especially for the Hillibikes and the newer iterations of some of the
older models. When my Susie's fork arrives and meets its frame and gets
shipped across the country, I will have 3 Rivendells, all Hillies.

The happy part, while subjective, does say a lot. My Clem L makes me a
little happier I suppose than my 1984 Trek 830. For no particular reasons
that could be ticked off a list--certainly not because I paid way more for
it, or because it's in better condition. A more luxurious, deliberate but
still plenty peppy ride feel, maybe would describe a difference? The Clems
are based on old vintage mtbs like the 830, and lots of Surlys take design
cues from Rivendells. If there was no Clem L, I would be blissfully riding
around on my not as nice Trek.

I'm sure the Surly does everything you could want it to do, and gives you
some happiness to boot. The Rivendell might give you additional happiness,
as reported by others here. As long as you are not constantly worrying if
it will get stolen or damaged. But that's an inside job! Good luck.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread Nathan Mattia
Hello Jeffrey
This year I finally stepped up and built up a Hillborne after Rivving up a
1992 Bridgestone RB-T, a 1993 Bridgestone XO-2, and a 1983 Specialized
Expedition.
You can read all about and see those pics at
PipesBikesandLeather.com

Once I rode the Hillborne, all of those others faded into the memory of my
affections. The Sam is that good.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread Jason Fuller
First off, there's nothing you couldn't do on the CrossCheck that you could
do on the Hillborne. Both are exemplary do-it-all bikes. But if you did
make the switch, I can personally attest you'll find that:
- The Hillborne rides smoother
- The Hillborne tracks nicer
- The Hillborne feels more intuitively responsive

These are a result of the geometry and tubing of the Hillborne that are
simply superior to the Crosscheck. I love Surly stuff and they share a rare
trait with Rivendell in that they don't seem to age, but I find their
tubing selection and geometry lacks the refinement that may not make much
difference in city riding, but starts to really be noticeable as you spend
more time in the saddle.

Ideal scenario I'd keep the Crosscheck as a lockup bike and maybe simplify
the build, and make the Hillborne the fancy bike. What a great combo.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-11 Thread masmojo
I had a Cross Check and for the money it's really hard to beat.
There's only one thing I really didn't like about it. The top tube was a bit
short, this really showed itself in the area of toe overlap and you had to use
a really long stem to run Albatross handlebars. Running fenders was doable but
only just. On the positive side it was one of the most comfortable bikes to
pedal, for whatever reason my seat position relative to the pedals was just
perfect! I eventually took the Albatross bars off and switched to a Jitensa (or
similar) bar which the second owner kept, were still on it as it passed to the
third owner & are likely still on it.
A Sam will be a similar bike while being completely different at the same
time. It will cure many of the things I found "off" about the CC AND it'll look
great!

[RBW] ISO/WTT/WTB Rene Herse Maes Parallel, **non** ultralight bar, 42 mm at outside center of hooks

2020-08-11 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't want a VO bar, thanks, and I do want 42 mm c-c measured at the
middle of the outside of the hooks. Am willing to consider 44 mm at this
point, but my inner pea-princess prefers 42.

As the Cajun chef said when asked what wine goes with his gumbo, "Watcha
got?"

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: FS: Orange Rivendell Rambouillet 60cm

2020-08-11 Thread Kevin D norcal
Hey Christian,
I might be interested in your 62cm Rambouillet. I realize the 64cm I have
is too large and have been looking for 62. If the 60cm in Portland is
still available maybe there's a way to resolve things.
Also, I think you had a couple responses for Albatross bars, but if you're
still looking let me know - I have an extra set or two.
best,
