[RBW] Re: Building a Sam Hillborne

2021-02-26 Thread Collin A
You ask how to build up a bike, and as others have mentioned there are many
"good" ways to build up a bike and I'd argue there are almost no "bad" ways
to build a bike, as long as it works (exaggerating a bit, but you get my
point)! You have loads of parts, so really it seems like you could build up
just about anything.

A few questions to get your mental gears turning:
1. Do you want it to be like your other bikes or something different (to
take advantage of building from the ground up)?
2. Whats the typical ride going to be for the bike? Fully loaded on rough
trails, smooth pavement and a days worth of food, or somewhere in between?
3. Are there any items you MUST include? I ask because sometimes you have a
really nice pair of _ that you want to use (and you seem to have TONS
of parts...).

Personally, I recently converted my Joe to a dirt-drop bar slick 650x50
bike and LOVE it. 2x9 with friction bar ends are quite fun, but can't say
they are any better than my 2x11 STI on my 700x38 gravel bike, or the 1x11
flat bar setup that was on it before. They are all fun and all worth trying
in my opinion.

Good luck!

 Hi

The business model for Rivendell is to focus on one frame group at a
time. So it takes a couple of months to work through a container or so of
frames. They are having the Sam Hillborne frame now so that is going to
generate the excitement for their work capacity. It could easily be next
year before the Clem Smith Junior (H) and (L).

The variety of bicycle types and models is cool but a person who sees a
bike like my Clem Smith Jr. might have to wait a long time to find one for
themselves. I wanted a Joe Appaloosa months ago and have not been able to
 get one.

That is why the secondary market is important. When we pass our bikes
around among Rivendellers we make it possible to have or try more than one
 Bicycle.

This bike is really beautiful in person. Grant says it will last a
lifetime and it is less than a year old now.

 generator hub and light

 better Shimano pedals

 better seat Brooks B67S

rivendell handle bar treatment, shellacked bar tape and cork grips

The bicycle is in very good shape

I paid $1,600 for a complete bike and the upgrades added to the

Asking price is $1,500 or you have a different offer.

[RBW] Re: Building a Sam Hillborne

2021-02-26 Thread velomann
Two thoughts - from someone who just built up a new dark gold Sam this fall
(my first Rivendell but I've built up a lot of bikes from bare frames.)

First, I prefer downtube shifters on all my drop bar bikes. That's just me.
It's what I'm most comfortable with, it gives me the opportunity to take my
hands off the bars on a regular basis, and unlike brake/shift combos they
rarely break or need servicing. However, the Sam does not have downtube
bosses, so while that's not an insurmountable thing, it makes it a no-go
for me.

Second, I built my own 24/38 wide/low crankset with bash guard out of a
Sugino XD triple I had - broke off, ground and filed the teeth on an old
outer ring. I run it with an Ultegra long-cage RD and 9-speed 11-34
cassette and it gives me all the high and low I could ever want for this
bike.

btw, I'm running Bosco bars and a right Microshift thumbie. But I'm
planning on creating a 2nd cockpit I can swap in with a 46cm Noodle bar and
it will use a barend shifter.

[RBW] Re: Building a Sam Hillborne

2021-02-26 Thread aeroperf
Dang, that is a big collection of spare parts.

Your problem with this thread is going to be the fact that everybody has an
opinion. People “like” different things, and will be proponents of them.
So what you need to do first is figure out what YOU like. and that is
going to be hard.
You like drop bars, so… drop bars. Except, if you’ve never tried mustache
or albatross bars, maybe you should try one set. And lots of folks will be
posting saying “Yes! Straight bars!”.

I like Osprey bars, bar-ends, triple cranksets, and 9-speed rears. I have
good reasons for each choice, but your riding and reasons WILL be different.

So let’s start here:

1. Pick something you are comfortable with that you have multiple
selections for. And based on your spreadsheet, that won’t be limiting. So
just pick one - 3x9 and bar-ends on drops, for instance. What have you
liked before?
2. Download the information for the parts you have. I know Shimano has
posted Shop Manuals, User’s Manuals, and Exploded Views for EVERYTHING.
I’m kind of thinking Campi does, too.
3. Go through the data and find the bits that go together The right
chainline. The right throw and shape (2x derailleurs have a different
throw and shape from 3x derailleurs, for instance). The right brake
reach. The right rims for your riding style, and hubs for your accessories.
4. Order anything you really want and don’t have, and build it up, and go
try it. That will at least get you a complete bike you can use as a base.
5. Modify anything you don’t like. Over and over. If you get stuck, post
here.

And enjoy the process! The wonderful thing about a Sam is that it succeeds
for almost any set of choices.

2021-02-26 Thread Philip Barrett
I think some very good points were made above in that you have to be able
to appreciate what you're looking at to understand the value. I'm sure most
people look at the Rivendell range and think "Target bike" or at best
"Linus bike" (which incidentally my wife rides happily) so you're not going
to attract the casual bike buyer looking for something to run around the
park with.

Location must be a huge part of the equation too? Dallas (my domicile) is a
very popular cycling city BUT local riders are almost exclusively
weekend/weeknight warriors counting grams on their carbon framesets. That's
not a criticism, but the idea of them spending $1,000s on a bike guaranteed
not to work with their Strava KOMs is optimistic at best. So that being
said, I'm surprised this one hadn't sold being in a location(NorCal) that
is much more open & friendly to bikes as transportation. In Texas I would
add Austin to the "better likelihood for sale" locations, nationally the
obvious ones are the PNW, NorCal and NYC area (doesn't Bikesnob ride a Riv)?

Joe is 100% correct on the pictures. I've had a lot of success on
Craigslist and I'm sure that's mostly due to sensible pricing and lots of
pretty pictures. Of course the absolutely crazy best buying deal I ever got
on a motorcycle was accompanied by one lousy cell phone photo taken in a
dark cellar at midnight!

I think the biggest mover is lots of pics, which I put in a linkable album
so folks here can get to them. If I'm buying and there's only one pic I'm

Re: [RBW] Do the Clem Smith Junior stepthrough bicycles have a used value?

2021-02-26 Thread aeroperf

Would this be worth a dedicated “How to sell a Riv” thread?
I’ve seen a lot of people selling, a lot of people looking to buy. This is
the first thread I’ve seen with discussion about How To.

List in a lot of places, list on other groups, be patient, consider
consignment at an LBS.
To which I could add “Spend a day cleaning with a toothbrush, soapy water,
and apply a good show car polish like Zaino’s, and you’ll get an extra
$100”, unless you are selling it sight-unseen.
Also a few other comments, but this thread doesn't seem the place.

shopping for Rivendells than just the folks on this forum. I would try
other bike forums as well as ebay. I know ebay takes a big cut, but it's
also the biggest audience and Rivendells don't usually last a long time.

Selling a high end/relatively expensive can often take a lot of patience,
especially when your talking about a niche market. Also, if you want to get
the most out of your investment it's usually more profitable to part
everything out. There are a lot of us that enjoy the hunt for parts and
building up a bike just the way we want it to be. However you want to sell
it the key is patience and reaching the broadest market within your
boundaries of reason.

I hope that's helpful, and good luck with your sale. There are buyers out
there for Clems, I promise.

I imagine that if you’re having the frameset professionally painted they
could match that color pretty closely. If going that route, have a few
sample images available to review with them so that both you and the
painter are on the same page. I have taken screenshots of colors I liked
and then created a PDF with them all in there and emailed them to my
builder and painter. Calibration on computers can be a little different
from screen to screen, but at least you’ll be in the ballpark. Just my $0.02

[RBW] FS - Phil "CHP" pedals / 47cm and 54cm 1984 Expeditions

2021-02-26 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
I have a pair of working Phil Wood platform "CHP" pedals for sale. $120,
which does not include s No issues with them except me loving my
Specialized Touring pedals more.

Also for sale are 2 1984 Specialized Expeditions, 47 and 54cm. Downtube
shifter braze-ons = the 1984 model year.

In very, very good shape (otherwise I would not have bought them). I'm
thinking ~ $350 / bike, which would be just the frame, fork, stem and
handlebars. If you would like more of the original equipment...well... let
the haggling' begin. I bought these for parts to maintain my 60cm '84 as
close to original as possible, so if you want some of the "goodies," we
need to talk.

Lugged steel frames, relaxed touring geometries, plenty of room for 700x35
Paselas and fenders...sort of "Rivendell before Rivendell..." If I had to
choose between my '84 Expedition and my orange Atlantis, I'd have a
conundrum on my hands.

Downhills and tailwinds to y'all.

Re: [RBW] Re: Albatross and Choco riders

2021-02-26 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric, I mounted my Albatross bars on a Nitto NP 12cm stem (measures 12.5cm)
with the stem at saddle height and bars angled down to be at a 90 degree
angle to my arms. This angle keeps my wrists from kinking and places the
curves of the bars about 5cm above my saddle. My saddle is slammed back on
a Nitto lugged seat post with 4cm's of setback. This gives me a full hand's
grip both in front and behind the stem bolt, but my hands always migrate
forward and my weight isn't resting on my hands due to the seat post's
setback.

This works for me, but I don't like riding sitting bolt upright on my bikes.

YMMV,

John

Re: [RBW] Re: Albatross and Choco riders

2021-02-26 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Eric,
Is your neck pain from extending your neck? Did you have similar pain when
using the drop bars? Other pains/problems?

Like you, I prefer the forward position of albatross bars-- it feels
natural for me, perhaps since I like to lean forward.

If you would like a more upright/cruising position to try, I suggest
tilting the saddle nose up a little bit. The up-nose position makes me feel
more comfortable sitting upright, and less comfortable leaning forward.

Good luck!

Just a few thoughts, in no particular order... Patience is a virtue selling
anything like this. If you have time, just update your sales post(s) and wait.
Fancy-ish parts are always worth the most separated from the bike. If you
have the original parts, putting them back on and selling off the upgrades will
almost certainly net you the most moolah. I sold a nicely built ~58cm Saluki
(predecessor to the AHH, I think) on this list years ago for something like
$1500 and purchased a Joe Appa with a dyno hub but no saddle a year or so ago
for about the same. My $0.02 would be to return it to stock configuration if
you can and sell off the upgraded parts. Set the price at 3/4 or so of new and
I bet it eventually sells...

I've added over $1,000 of upgrades and paid $1,600 to purchase. It has treated

a large Wald basket, Brooks seat, double kick stand, and a generator hub and

So what suggestions do you have for finding new homes for your used Rivendells"
Mine was new last October (2020). Craigslist only works with an 80% discount
on the purchase replacement value, same with local ads. Pro's Closet is
looking for fancy road bikes so not an option for this transaction. I've
considered returning it to Rivendell so they could find someone who would

might be the best option. I have done that in the past. Ive given bicycles to

Just wondering.

[RBW] Re: Do the Clem Smith Junior stepthrough bicycles have a used value?

2021-02-26 Thread Michael Morrissey
Don't speak about my man Craig like that! Craigslist has come through for
me so many times on good deals - my car, motorcycle, a job, a Spot single
speed bicycle, my Lambretta (TV175 - holy grail of scooters).

You need a full list of bike parts to get your price. You need to have the
size listed there. I think Clems and most Rivendells have a high resale
value.

Also do contact The Pro's Closet. Their office is like a mountain bike
museum. They have the most amazing collection of vintage mountain bikes and
have sold Rivendells before. I think they'd be into it.

I am passively looking for a Clem Smith Jr. in the 45 cm / 26 inch size for
my S.O. on the East Coast.

Good luck! Your bike is nice and it will sell.

2021-02-26 Thread luckyturnip
There’s a lovely shop not far from me that offers it. I’m not sure where you’re
located, however.
You obviously pay for the service but the advertising via social media, word of
mouth, and eyes on made the difference I believe.

it should sell for $300. You belong like the rest of us to a very peculiar
and small cycling niche that appreciates both quality and comfort. Heat
treated handlebars, cork grips, Nitto versus Pletscher racks, Brookses,
dynamos, etc. just don't enter into the weltanschauung of most people
looking for a "cruiser" bike (and in this case, that's an honorable term).
Most people hope to find these at Target.

Me, I'd try to find other vending outlets. Off the top of my head, if
you belong to a church in a high-rent neighborhood, post a FS sign
explaining the quality -- "this is not your average $300 cruiser" even if
to unpracticed eyes it looks like one. Ditto at work, if you work in an
office, or belong to a gymn, or attend wine tasting events; you get the
idea. You'll have to find people with means who want a comfortable bike
 and
can also understand as well as afford one that is top quality. Otherwise,
again, people will associate quality with cf road bikes and full susp
mountain bikes, or* e contrario,* look at comfortable bikes (all sorts
of qualifications here, but you know what I mean) as low cost items.

#2: If selling on-list, the secret is to wait. I've listed what I
thought were bargains only to get deafening silence in response. Then in a
month or 2 or 4, a similar item is snapped up. I think in particular of my
upgraded Sam Hillborne that went begging for weeks; but later, other SHs
 were snapped up with alacrity.

The last option is to keep and ride it! Curious: Why are you selling?
