Jacob, The ride to Steep Ravine was harder than I expected, but totally
doable. I was in full sunlight the whole way there so I got pretty hot. I
had to walk my bike a few times. But it only took 3.5-4 hours to get there.
And I was going pretty slow. The ride back was overcast and easier. But
like others said, there are so many places to ride down there! The other
thing is that it is really hard to get a site or cabin at Steep Ravine, so
I'd look into that if you are interested in staying there.

[RBW] Re: Update on my tire question

2021-05-16 Thread Bones
That bike looks awesome! I have a 59 Clem H in Grilver. Love it. It's
slowly starting to look like something from Mad Max. I am curious about the
tire width though. Those rims look like the stock DM24s, which are a hair
wider than the Cliffhangers I use. I mounted Antelope Hills on them and
they measured 56mm (slightly wider than advertised). Mine are tubeless
though. Maybe that has an impact on the width. Either way, glad you like
'em. Great tires. I hope some day you get the chance to try tubeless. I
won't be going back to tubes on any of my larger tires.

Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] Re: My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-16 Thread Pam Bikes
To keep track of miles I have a cyclometer. This is my 3rd. The first one
came off my beginner bike which I had for about 4 1/2 years. I rode it for
5855 miles then when I got the Betty Foy I wondered if I'd ever ride it as
much. And now I ride more than than yearly. My first cyclometer was a
Blackburn then I got another one off ebay so I wouldn't need to change the
mount but the wiring went bad - intermittantly stopping. So I took the one
off my daughter's bike. It was given to me from someone who didn't use it
anymore. It's a Cateye Enduro. The mount was broken in a crash but I
fashioned a new one out of an old bike tube and a zip tie. It's doing ok
from 2 yrs ago. These are the wired ones with the spoke magnet and CR2032
battery. When the display dims and I know I need to replace it, I write
down the mileage and reprogram it.

I've hauled all kinds of stuff on my Betty. Just tonight I brought home a
5 lb can of oyster sauce, some sesame oil, cooking wine and found a 5
gallon soy sauce bucket at the dumpster. The bucket was strapped to the
rack with a John's Irish strap. Then on the way home from my friends
house, I found a floor lamp that I strapped on with a Voile strap.

[RBW] Re: Update on my tire question

2021-05-16 Thread David Person
Sharp looking bike. I run RH Snoqualmie Pass tires on my Hillborne and use
the widest Mr. Tuffy's available for 700c tires. That stops a lot of
goatheads, though the protection is primarily in the center of the tire,
about 33mm wide protection area. So occasionally one will get through
outside the protection zone. Thankfully here is SoCal, goatheads are a
problem in the fall only.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-16 Thread Roger Morrison
Patrick, yes it is a first generation Cyclone GT(with matching front
derailleur). The frame is big, at 68cm. I bought the frameset a few months
ago, and built it up mostly with stuff that I had on hand. It is a good
riding bike, but a little on the heavy side.

Other notable parts:
Shimano 7402 shifters(set to friction mode)
Shimano BR70 brakes
Nitto dirt drop bars
Sugino AT crankset minus the small ring
B17 saddle
Deore seatpost
STX wheelset from a Trek 520
38mm Gravelkings
Nitto M12 rack
Swift Industries bags

Probably a couple other things that I am forgetting..

Re: [RBW] Seeking advice on handlebars

2021-05-16 Thread exliontamer
I think it's worth considering your shoulder width and how much you want to
be upright. Everyone is different. I'm 6'1" with the legs of a giraffe, the
shoulder width of Hulk Hogan, and the torso of a 5 year old so I tend to
like shortish stems with wide bars that have some back sweep towards me.
All of this may be totally invalid for you but for me...
*Flat Bars/Bullmoose - The wider the better. Strongly prefer them on
technical MTB trails and on short rides with some jackassery(hopping on
curbs, etc.). Can't stand them on long rides.
*Jitensha/Cinelli Pope/Map Ahearne style - Don't like any of them. The
wrist position flat out doesn't work for me.
*North Road/Albatross/Choco - Love everything about them in every way. The
CroMo Albatross are a good affordable way to try them out are just as good
as the aluminum ones. I have big hands so the position in the hooks is a
little tight but both positions are perfect for me and the bars have enough
room to be adaptable to grip length.
*Moustache Bars - No
*Bosco - Pretty awesome in every way but I have a preference to Albatrosses
which feel better to me off road and equally as good otherwise.

I'm biased but my vote would be to start with Albatrosses unless you've
tried flats and really want the Bullmoose. Even then something like the
SimWorks Getaround bar would be cheaper, wider, and give you a similar
sensation.

2021-05-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I admire your moral fiber for happily riding your bike without fretting
about the paint. I do have a 22-year-old Rivendell, but I've babied it, and
only used it very occasionally for errands or commuting (it's the 1999 Joe
Starck custom). It had a few minor scuffs, but the Joe Bell paint was
largely intact when I had it slightly modified and powdercoated
(*nice* powdercoat)
in 2018. It does sport a wee dent in the right chainstay where another
eejit cyclist, playing paceline with me last year, slammed into me from
behind -- bent the wheel but left the frame *almost* unscathed.

OTOH, I did commute on another Riv custom with Joe Bell paint for many
years, including carriage on bus bike racks -- more but again minor scuffs
and scrapes.

2021-05-16 Thread Michael Morrissey
Here is my pseudo-Rivendell! It's a lugged steel 26" Trek 830. I thought
this was the first year, but it's the second year they made them: 1984. I
have ridden this bike all over NYC but now it's in storage and I ride my
Rivendell most of the time. For me this bike is DIALED IN to just what I
want and very patina-ed. I made this video a few years ago but not much has
changed in the bike except tires and saddle.

I made a video about this bike. Somehow the youtube algorithm liked it and
it has 25k views:

Enjoy!

Thanks for your reply. The scenery there is gorgeous (bikes included!)
I guess what I am wondering is if there are any favorite trails people have
to recommend in that area, we can put the bikes on the car to get there if
necessary (sometimes the only way to get to the ride with young kids.)
Can be mildly technical MTB or paved or gravel, our bikes do it all. :)

Jacob,

The ride does involve some climbs, but It's well worth it! The Bay Area is
wonderful for all types of riding, you can pick from so many routes to suit
your needs.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Cheviot - silver, 60cm - $1,750 local pick up in Napa

2021-05-16 Thread Pancake
sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/bik/d/napa-rivendell-cheviot-silver-60cm-rack/7322509966.html

My friend and I were building this up for a friend but they already got
themselves another bike! So now I'm selling it - built it up myself and
looking forward to a local sale if possible. I'm in Napa but I visit
friends in Berkeley, Sonoma and sometimes San Jose so could probably meet
anywhere in between. I can install the fenders if you like, but figured to
leave them as clean as possible until they meet their final racks and tires
and such. If you want some parts swapped around or to see if I have some
alternative parts just let me know and I'll look around.

Re: [RBW] Re: My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-16 Thread Leah Peterson
Your bike mistreated because of its beausage? Never. It is my unvarnished
opinion that the mistreated bike is the pristine one. A pristine bike is a
parked bike, and Rivs are meant to be ridden. I have one scuff in my raspberry
Platypus paint and I donā€™t even care. More to come, I figure.

Andy - yes, delight us with your 20 year Ram write-up and beausage. Who else
has had a bike for a long time and can contribute? Like Pam, Iā€™d really enjoy
those stories and photos.

As for me, my Betty Foy was 8 years old when I traded it in for the longer
chain-stayed, raspberry Platypus. I learned a lot in those 8 years and you
could see it on the frame. I didnā€™t even know how to raise the handlebars when
I got my Betty. I stripped a bolt or two. Mashed the brake cable into the top
tube paint job. I used it to pull my kids and haul my dog, and as such, it was
tipped over by said kids and dog more than once. Wish I had done a similar
write-up!

[RBW] Re: question re Dremel attachments

2021-05-16 Thread Addison Quarles
Are you set on using a dremel for cutting and finishing?
I use a pair of bolt cutters and a bench top belt sander with good results.
I just worry about operating spinny, cutty tools so near a (presumably)
beautiful paint job. It's of course more work to fit them, cut them, take
them off, finish the edges and then reinstall, but maybe I'm just one to
take the scenic route.
If I'm in a "hurry" I'll cut with the bolt cutters and finish with a hand
file, leaving the strut mounted to the fender but not mounted to the frame
eyelet.
All the same, if you're handy with the Dremel and trust that you won't nick
the paint, I've always enjoyed using a flex shaft attachment, as it's
easier to articulate with.
Best of luck!

[RBW] Seeking advice on handlebars

2021-05-16 Thread Johnny Burrell
Hey all,
Next week I'll get a new-to-me Hunqapillar and I don't prefer the current
drop bars. I'd like to switch to a more upright setup, but unsure which.
The Bullmoose caught my eye, I like the taper more than bars that come
straight back. What other options are good ones? How does one go about
correctly sizing and fitting new bars? The stem is, i think, about 100-110
which is my preference in this size bike.

school me and learn me up on how to pick out handlebars?

[RBW] Re: Need Platypus tire advice

2021-05-16 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch

You stated/asked:
"Some of them are clearly wrong; how can the 700x44 Rene Herse Snoqualmie
Pass tires possibly weigh less than the 700x38 Barlow Pass ones, unless the
casings on the 700x44s are sidewall-bursting thin? And weightwise, the SOMA
Supple Vitesse SLs are just *crazy* light, if those numbers are real."

I asked this same question to Jan Heine about 2 years ago on his blog
post. He replied the 700x44 were designed slightly different to be lighter
than the 38's. Can't recall what the change was, possibly thinner tread,
but he claimed it did not affect wear. So the weight difference is real.

[RBW] Re: Need Platypus tire advice

2021-05-16 Thread Pam Bikes
I have the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes and love them. I ride daily on them
and get 12,000 miles without a flat. I change them before I have any
problem. I'm on my 4th set. This is the only tire I've ridden so I don't
know about the others but I loved the performance so far.

[RBW] Re: My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-16 Thread Pam Bikes
I was afraid people would give me a hard time for thinking I mistreated my
bike. I'd love to see other bikes in similar condition. I used to stress
over the paint chips but have enjoyed all the rides and have come to
realize that bikes are for riding. If it gets chipped, that's part of the
journey.

I'm sure more people have ridden lots more than me. I just ride mine
everyday, everywhere literally. We're all lucky we have our Rivs before
Ultraromancer, Bike Snob and Russ of The Path Less Pedaled got theirs.
Rivs may be more hard to come by.

[RBW] Which Riv. mixte has the shortest chainstays?

2021-05-16 Thread 'Joel S' via RBW Owners Bunch
Does this also equate to wheelbase?

I store my bikes in the basement in winter and Sunroom the other seasons.
Long bikes can be a problem.

Thanks.

You use your bike the way we all should (if weather permitted). Good to
remember the nicks and scratches. A well used bike.

[RBW] Re: My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-16 Thread ascpgh
Wow! That's my first reaction. Second is what great aforethought you've had
to keep up your documentation so as to look at it from a ten year
retrospective. I don't even keep my miles tallied but your bike's decade
inspires me to post in response "My Rambouillet after 20 years". I'm going
to have to work on it to meet the quality of your post! I've got beausage
times two, I once wrote that mine had exceeded definition and moved to
"beausavage".
