[RBW] Re: Ride differences between Bombadil and Appaloosa

2021-05-17 Thread Joe Bernard
The short version - having owned that Bombadil for a very short time and an
Appaloosa longer - is nope! I don't think they feel exactly the same but I
wouldn't say one is significantly faster or more comfortable than the
other. The only reason I can think of to move on to an Appa is if you have
a strong affection for the long stays (I do). Or you just like the Mermaid
color and want a new Riv. That's also a good reason!

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar - stem length & wtb

2021-05-17 Thread Ed Carolipio
Maybe whatbars.com can help you make the choice? Noodles and Billie are in
their database, but you'll have to pick a stand in for your Wavie bars
(e.g., Surly Open, On One Mary). I use the comparisons to picture where my
hand position would be on the new bars relative to where I typically place
them on old bar, then I "shift" the bars mentally so the hand positions
(new vs old) would be roughly the same distance from saddle-to-handlebar.
That "shift" would be the difference between the old and the new stem.

[I went from a Billie to a Noodle on my Homer, so I dropped down from 110mm
to 60mm, or about 50mm.]

JS , without being you, all I can say is go long, a 12 or 13. I have a
good selection of various open face stems so I can try any combo easily. I
find a combo of a threadless adapter and some cheap threadless 0 degree or
greater stems great for fitting and or keeping on the bike to ride. That
said, I'm not a fan of negative rise road stems with a long quill for
 raising handlebars, it's self-defeating.

"Upright" is such a cliche' though and means nothing more than saying it.
Unless you're face planted everyone who rides a bike is upright to some
extent and it's always changing. People have different body types,
different flexibilities and certainly different sensibilities about
everything in general. How you're placed over the saddle and your foot
placement has a big influence on the upper body, so just concentrating on
the upper with considering everything else is misleading at best. Bike
riding is a whole body experience, not to mention the "white elephant" in

Wow, that bombadil is beautiful!
I will be watching this thread as I’ve liquidated some things to get the
cash necessary to buy an Appaloosa next month, and am always interested in
being further talked into something I’ve already decided.

[RBW] Re: Ride differences between Bombadil and Appaloosa

2021-05-17 Thread Bones
Jason, you had a Clem, correct? How does the Bombadil compare to that? I've
never ridden a Bombadil, but compared to my Clem H (59), my Appaloosa (62
2TT) always felt lighter, quicker and more roadish. I never actually
compared their weight. In my mind the Clem always felt like it belongs
primarily off the road and the Appaloosa on the road. So that's how I
always had them set up. That said, I'm a pretty slim dude and I'm sure I
could ride an Appaloosa as rough as I'd like without worrying about it
breaking. I dig the long chainstays, and I'd bet the Appaloosa would be an
improvement for the type of riding you are doing with it. If you need a
54cm or larger its a moot point though, 700c only. Also, I had a 62 2TT
Hillborne and that felt almost identical to the Appaloosa, maybe a hair
more responsive.

I know, it was just funny to me when I got the stem and went through the

threading 4 bolts in and doing the cross pattern over and over to get them

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Bones
When I spoke to Vince a few months ago he told me that the 52 Clem was
something like 7-8cm longer than the 50cm Platypus. If the stock 52 Clem
comes with a 10cm stem, in my mind that means go as long as on the stem as
you can with any of the sweptback bars on the Platypus. Just for reference:
on my Appaloosa I used both the Chocomoose (12cm extension) and Billies on
a 12cm stem. I never grabbed them at the ends of the bars, and always
wanted them to be just a tad farther away. Riv seems to have addressed that
by making the latest generation of Appaloosa a tad longer.

Doug - Hot tip, call Rivendell and on occasion, they might have what you need
that just hasn’t made it on the site yet. That’s how I got my 110 faceplater.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Joe Bernard
Everyone's getting Billie Bars! I'll be interested to hear the reviews, it
seems like that bar never got much attention after it hit the shelves a
couple years ago.

Fun fact about the FacePlater (I got one recently): If you use lock-on
grips so everything is easily removable, it actually takes just as much
time to remove and replace 4 stem bolts as it does to loosen one and remove
and replace the stuff on the bars. Isn't that a fun fact?? 😁

2021-05-17 Thread Doug H.
Leah,
Living next door to a Riv family would be so cool. We could ride and try
different bar setups. I think I will try the Billie Bars and like you said
could sell and try another bar if needed. Now on the stem length. I agree
with Will that the new faceplater stem is the way to go to make bar
switches easier but alas they are out of stock. No problem really as I'm
doing a slow build.

[RBW] Re: Ride differences between Bombadil and Appaloosa

2021-05-17 Thread Chris L
I've had similar thoughts about my 1st run Hunqapillar vs the Appaloosa or
the new 55 cm Atlantis. From what I remember reading over the years, I
think the old Hunqapillars and Bombadils are probably quite a bit lighter
in weight than the Appaloosa and new Atlantis. I remember seeing numbers
like "0.8 straight gauge" for the Bombadil and the Hunqapillar is supposed
to be very similar to the Bombadil in tubing. OTOH, Will sent me the specs
on the Appaloosa tubing and it's thick, with several 1.x numbers in there.

In theory, the 54 Appaloosa should ride almost identically to my 54
Hunqapillar with the the exception of the chainstay length. I would love
to ride them back-to-back.

I've thought about picking up a 55 Atlantis frameset when they come back
next year, but I've pretty much decided that if I did, I would hold on to
my Hunqapillar until I had some time on the Atlantis, and then I would
decide which one to keep. Old Hunqapillars and Bombadils are not not easy
to come by.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Jason Fuller
Bones' experience about Albatross vs. Choco was very interesting to me!
I've only used the Albatross between the two, and chalked up the difference
between the two (functionally, at least) to simply different rise and reach
numbers. But it's a good point that the increased rise on the Albatross
means that flipped-up, the 'hooks' are not very ergonomic because they
angle downwards too much; yet flipped the drop is so significant that a)
you need huge stem rise and b) looks weird. Both Choco and Billie address
this, and I think they're both better bars as a result. They're basically
interchangeable other than the Billie gives you a bit more forward range,
and they flare out a bit more which imo gives increased bike control if you
ride off-road too.

To Kate's concern about the Choco being too short-reach, I totally get that
concern but I am pretty sure that the Platy's are long enough that you
don't need to worry. Assuming the ST dimension is typical for you, I'd bet
a 10-11cm stem would get you right where you want to be. I do wish full
geometry tables were published for the Platy though!

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Will Horton
We just swapped out Tosco bars on an 85cm fillet faceplater stem to Albatross
bars with the same 85cm stem and sofar this has been perfect for Maia on her 55
Platy who is appreciating the extra hand positions compared to the Tosco’s.
More forward leaning, less Mary Poppins.

I say Albatross or Choco. If you go Choco, you will need a longer stem than the
Albatross bars. Like I said, we are using an 85cm on the albatross bars and I
am using a 110 with my Choco’s.

I highly recommend getting a fillet faceplater stem as it makes swapping bars
out later a lot easier, particularly if you have wrapped your bars and glued on
cork grips and you hopefully have hinged clamps on your shifters.

All this stuff is super hard to nail down since it’s so personal and like Leah
said, take your best guess and sell later on if you need to, or just toss em in
your stash for later like I do.

This is all part of the fun.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Leah Peterson
Hi Kate,

I’ve had Albatross bars on my original Riv, a Betty with a 10 cm stem. With
those bars, I wanted to sit up and hold the ends of the bars with my fingertips
- too far for me. The Platy is much longer, so I really think the Albatross
would be too far, though I adore the look of them. The other thing about the
Albatross: not a lot of real estate to put your things on. I like my iPhone
mount and a Randi Jo bag and a mirror and bell on my bars, and the curves of
the Albatross prohibit good placement of these accoutrements. The Billie Bar
will give you a lot more room, I think. The Chocos look promising if you don’t
want the rise in your bar, and you can put lots of stuff on it.

I think either Choco or Billie would make you very happy, and guess what? If
not, you can sell them on here and buy a different bar! It’s like $100
investment and has good resale value. Bars are easy to swap out and you can do
it right at home. Just choose something and try it out! Get that Platy built
and in your hands this week, I say!

Jason, I’m greatly encouraged by your opinion on the Billies. I have wanted to
slide my hands forward and never can because there are levers in my way, and
with the dip in the bar you cannot shift them forward. So I always hang on to
the grips. But how nice would it be to have THAT option? I’ll soon know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bosque ride, all within 2 mile radius of home

2021-05-17 Thread Patrick Moore
I remember stopping during one cycling commute to work long ago to shepherd
a family of quail (a swarm of tiny little chicks with mother) trying to
cross a busy street, but only succeeded in scattering the chicks across the
adjoining field; good intention gone astray.

Our landscape is more severe than most, even the wooded area, but I do
enjoy it even during short rides.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Doug H.
Kate,
I rode the hoods most of the time too, rarely in the drops unless my lower
back needed a stretch. I'm thinking Choco or Billie but the decision is oh
so hard!. Once I make the final decision on bars, stem length is next. Oh
bother. Stem/bars are so integral that making the wrong decision on one is
problematic. Or is it? As I type I'm thinking that any bar could be made to
work with the right stem length. H.

P.S. Kate, I'm with Vince on this one. If you are used to drops the Choco
does offer better hand positions, especially if you don't need them up
high. I've used Albatross bars a bunch but I have always come back to the
Chocos (especially inverted). Every time I ride Albatross bars I end up
putting my hands all the way forward and they just aren't as comfortable
there as they are on the Choco. Albatross wins for style, Choco wins for
function.

I think it really all depends on where you like to put your hands. I love
the Billie Bars too, because I like to move my hands back and forth. My
wife only ever seemed to hold the end of the Boscos on her 52 Clem (10cm
stem), so when I put her Platypus together I had two options ready: more
Boscos on a 12-13cm Tallux or Albatross on an 85cm fillet brazed
flaceplater. In the end I chose the Boscos for aesthetic purposes. No doubt
I would have had to max out the stem to make the Billies or Chocos work.
Rise was as big a factor as reach for her. You can accomplish the same
thing a few different ways. With respect to the hand positions on the
Boscos, that forward position seems to work best when the bars are angled
down a good bit and/or low enough.

2021-05-17 Thread 'upyou...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
This is the discussion for me!
Handlebar decision is keeping me from hitting the green light on my Platy
build.
I just don't know.
Doug Hsame for me. Drops on my road bike (riding 90% of the time on
the hoods) and straight bars on my hybrid/mountain bike.
I would like a sweep and maybe a slight rise but don't want to be in a Mary
Poppins position. If it is too close to me and closes off the cockpit, I
will be super bummed. Also, how does that even work with climbing hills?
Vince at Riv is suggesting the Choco but I'm not sold.
Leaning towards Albatross.
I might be losing sleep on this as I really need to pick something
likethis week.
Leah...Billie's also sound good.
I just don't know.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Jason Fuller
Leah, I think you absolutely made the right call going with a Billie bar.
That bar has bar-none (heh) the largest range of fore-aft hand positions of
the options I'm familiar with. On the Boscos, while it's common practice
to wrap the bar ahead of the brake lever, I don't see how anyone makes
decent use of this area as a hand position. However, while the Billie
extends back almost as far for cruising along, you can very comfortably and
naturally slide your hands all the way into the front "hooks", which is a
bunch of inches forward. These bars are so long your stem length does
little more than determine where along the bar you put your brake levers -
I suggest positioning them for your most popular hand position; Rivendell
puts them further back on the bar than I would, I like 1.5 grip's worth
about behind the levers, and it's still comfortable to put your hands
forward even if they rest atop the levers partially.

Tangentially related, a surprise benefit to the Paul levers, beyond their
incredibly smooth operation, is that the clamp is extremely low profile and
therefore comfortable to rest your hands on.

My attachment is my opinion on the useful grip area of the Bosco (left) and
the Billie (right)

[RBW] Re: Bosque ride, all within 2 mile radius of home

2021-05-17 Thread Garth
Thanks for the story and the photos Patrick !

I sometimes see turtles, some even quite large, crossing the roads around
here. The roads aren't heavily travelled. At first there was the
inclination to assist them across ... hah hah a couple of snaps from
the fella and well ... if they made it this far they sure can make it
without any intervention .

2021-05-17 Thread Doug Hansford
Leah,
The Billie Bar is intriguing. I would love to be able to try out some bars
before committing to one. Feedback always helps though. You’re right the top
tube is s long even on the earlier Clems. I think on the 52 H the ETT is
about 60 cm. So I will need something swept back for sure.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Leah Peterson
Doug, I have Boscos on my 2019 Clem and it needs them. The expanded geo on that
2019 frame made me need an 8 cm stem and Boscos and there’s still a reach! I
don’t think you’ll have that same issue because you have a grilver Clem, and
those came out before Rivendell changed the geometry. But I wonder if your Clem
would like a Billie bar… Wish you lived next door and we could try it out!

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Doug Hansford
I am most interested in a handlebar discussion. I’ve mostly ridden drops on the
road and straight bars off-road but am looking for options for my Clem build.
Albatross seems to be the one I’m leaning toward but am open to hear what
others think. I had Boscos on my first Clem (didn’t keep it long) and agree
with you Leah they came back a touch too close to me.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Leah Peterson
Does anyone wanna talk handlebars? I went with my standard Bosco bars, but the
more miles I ride, the more I’m irritated that the bars feel too close to me. I
have cramping in my right wrist (not my left, don’t ask why, I have no idea and
it makes no sense!) when I go really hard and it hurts enough that I have
actually said “ow!” out loud.I’ve also been known to sing and dance on my bike
so the locals are used to this behavior by now. Anyway, I have a 9 cm Nitto XL
stem (it is 280mm vs the 225 mm Tallux) on there because the 10 cm wasn’t
available. I just ordered a Billie bar, which I’m hoping pulls the bars away
from me enough, though it’s only about 1.5 inches further away from me than my
Boscos.

Does anyone have a Billie or an Albatross bar on their Platypus? What are your
impressions?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: 700c Wheel recommendations

2021-05-17 Thread Garth

Kushan, You can get custom builds straight from Velocity for $450 straight
gauge/$480 double butted spokes with their ATB hubs(black powdercoat only
if that matters). They offer off-menu(phone is best) the Cliffhanger in
non-machined, non-polished silver.

http://store.velocityusa.com/c/wheels_touring

Also, email Rich @Riv and see what he can do for you with either
Cliffhangers or whatever other rims he may have. You never know unless you
ask ! With Deore hubs they're entirely reasonable.

I wouldn't bother with Atlas rims either as the wider rim is more
beneficial for the tires you want to run. Cliffhangers aren't overkill for
your purposes at all. I'd call a rim that weighs say 900g like a Ryde Andra
30 overkill.

Monocog, 65" gear, 175 mm cranks. Depth to third knuckle of right

taller, too. The Ranger wheels are 30 1/2" in diameter at least on my 27 mm

Re: [RBW] Re: rides sought

2021-05-17 Thread Keith Weaver
I camped at Mckerricher state park a few weeks ago, near Fort Bragg, and
found a couple of good rides. One is along the coast, between Fort Bragg
and Mckerricher. This is a paved, very flat trail. The next ride is in the
Jackson State Demonstration Forest, near Mendocino. I started fairly high
up the slope, along the Forest History trails. This was very steep, I
wouldn't recommend it too highly, unless you want steep MTB action.

When I got to the lower portions of the trails, I had a lot of fun riding
along the Big River. It was relatively flat, smooth soil with some gravel.
I didn't go all the way along the trail, due to time, but it had to be a
couple of miles long at least. This would be from the intersection of Road
700 & Road 730. I think Trailforks calls this the Big River Haul Road, and
it looks like it goes all the way to Mendocino.

I found a site describing a new trail in this area with a bit of climbing,
it's the Observatory Trail. Below are a couple of links that may be helpful.

I share Joel's concerns about long chainstays and wheelbase. The geometry

chainstay on the 50 cheviot. The effective top tube on the Cheviot is 57.5
compared to what looks like 61.5 on the Platypus, if I am reading the
blurry diagram correctly. So the Platypus 50 is somewhere between 4 and 5
inches longer than the Cheviot 50, if my calculations are correct.

[RBW] Re: My Betty Foy after 10 years

2021-05-17 Thread JAS

Pam, you are an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your trusty Betty Foy
and all of her beauty marks. She is definitely a work of art. I'm
impressed with your mileage, daily riding, hauling ability and dedication
to helping others learn skills and confidence so they, too, can enjoy
cycling. Cheers to you!

That's interesting, mine is a very tight fit as well, 2 more mm and it
would not be a fit at all. It's pretty soft aluminum alloy if want to take
a file or grinder to it though.

Tom I noticed the same thing when trying to put the same kickstand on my
wife's Platypus. I may have been able to squeeze it in but it would have
rubbed the tire anyway so I didn't bother trying. FYI 48 Gravel Kings on
Pacenti Brevets and they measure 50mm tubeless.

[RBW] Re: 700c Wheel recommendations

2021-05-17 Thread lconley
Velocity will also make rims for you that are not listed - extra spoke
holes, polished, etc. I am overweight and like 40 and 48 spoke rims and
polished rims which they will happily do with the next batch of rims that
make. No extra cost for the non-standard spoke hole drillings, you just
need to wait for the next production run. I have polished 36 spoke 650B
Quills, polished 40 spoke 650B Cliffhangers and polished 48 spoke 650B
Cliffhangers.
