Re: [RBW] Atlantis 10 speed friction shifting?

2022-12-10 Thread Joe Mullins
Which rear derailleur do you have? Rivendell’s Silver Shifters are the
smoothest friction shifters out there in my opinion. Regardless of your rear
derailleur you should be able to just swap the trigger shifter for the friction
shifter.

Look into how you want to mount it because Riv has been know to flip the left
for right which allows you to run it on the thumb side of the grip which makes
sense to some. It's really a matter of preference.

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Andrew Turner
Bens "work" and "play" ethos gels with mine. I'd have to choose a Roadini
and Clem combo. The lack of lugs doesn't bug me personally, in fact the
skill and craftsmanship of Taiwan's TIG welders more than makes up for
that. Plus the bikes are just so darn GOOD. I've had a Roadini in the past
that was a size too big but was still the most enjoyable riding bike I've
had. And while I don't have experience with the Clem, it seems like a
really well thought out multi-tool; not one of those with the toothpick
that goes missing in a week and three odd knives you never use.

Re: [RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
If anyone comes up with a formula for this (I know that formulas are only
starting points) I'd like to hear it. I want a wider bar on my Matthews 1
for riding narrow ditchbank trails but as soon as I get on firm straight
surfaces I hate wide bars. Perhaps there's some perfect combination of stem
length and bar width which would be a better compromise for the sort of
riding I do on the Matthews than the 42 cm Maes Parallels on a 10 cm -17*
stem (bar almost even with saddle). (That's wide; my road bikes have 38 cm
bars.) Note that the Matthews is intended to fit and feel much like a road
bike but take 60s (and fenders) for sand and ditch trails. The high-flop
Big Ones don't help at slow ditchbank speeds.

Me, if I were to pursue this further, I'd guestimate things by the standard
seat-nose to brake-hood-tips measurement of (for me) 27". This assumes of
course saddle setback and saddle make and model are set in concrete, which
they are in my case. I tried this in a desultory way yesterday and yes, it
indicated a stem shorter by about 1/2" or so for a much wider bar, but then
one could also raise the bar a bit and probably compensate at much less
expense and effort.

Late to this rather fascinating discussion. Oh no, that was no
unintentional oversight, that was a conscience in poor working order. I
have to credit the seller though for the quality of his purple prose; he
could get a good job in marketing, not just for the writing but for the
spin and the magnificent keyword list.

More seriously, what a bad fate for such a pretty bike.

For me it's easy: a gofast road bike (to make up for my slowness) and a
very similar model but built for all rounder -- pavement + light dirt
-- and errand riding. So perhaps a Roadeo and a Legolas or perhaps a repeat
of my 1999 custom and another one that can take 42s and fenders.

If Clems and Platypuses or Atlantises (note proper English plurals) could
fit 50 mm tires and fenders I'd sneak in a second #2 for more dirt biased
riding. Anything under 50 mm is no good for our sand, and even 50 is too
hard and skinny.

Re: [RBW] Dura-Ace and Japanese Recycling

2022-12-10 Thread Russell Duncan
How about some Italian recycling. I’ve coupled Suntour late 70s barcons
with parts from a mid-1990s Campagnolo Record 8-spd group, including the
rear derailleur, the wheel set, a stock 13-26 Campagnolo 8-sped cassette
modified with a 28 tooth low gear, an early 80s Record front derailleur,
and a 2010-ish Campagnolo CX 36/46 10-speed crankset with Le Tour chainring
spacers for retrofitting to 8-spd. The system mix works perfectly and I
think that it would work with a Campy 9-spd setup too.

Re: [RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm intrigued by the Legolas. Can anyone compare the ride -- handling,
"planing"? -- to the Roadeo or to the Rambouillet, or to the old Road
Standard or to an older Road Custom?

Does it have less bb drop than Rivendell road models? Does this affect
handling or feel?

What is the fattest tire that will fit on a Legolas, no fenders?

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Is there a 31.8 clamp drop bar comparable to a Nitto Noodle 54cm?

2022-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Nitto makes a 25.4 to 31.8 handlebar shim; I used one to get my first pair
of Maes Parallels to fit my Ritchey stem. Rivendell and Analog sell them.

The Atlantis is nice too. I have to say that you keep your bikes looking
new. Or are they both new? Mine are never as clean and always show a bit of
wear on frame, components, luggage.

[RBW] 57cm A Homer Hilsen Geo ?

2022-12-10 Thread Eliot Balogh
Looking at a frameset and owner doesn’t know the year. Top tube is 57cm
CTC, seat tube is 57cm CTT. Head tube is 15mm.

There are only a few years on Bike Insights but this would suggest it’s a
57cm frame from ~2017. Did the geometry change much around those years ?
The stack and reach are great but the stand over is about the same as my
PBH :p

 Hey Max,

Can't speak to the "why" aspect, but you're not crazy in your
 observation.

We have (3) pairs of the BL BT III and (1) pair of the Bubbly pedals
and they're not in the same category. Not to say there's anything wrong
with the Bear Traps, but the Bubbly pedals are on an entirely different
 level.

That said, either option good and you shouldn't regret your decision,
you did what works for the time being and maybe later on down the road you
get to try the alternative, but I wouldn't dwell on it all that much.

Re: [RBW] Is there a 31.8 clamp drop bar comparable to a Nitto Noodle 54cm?

I use the Maes Parallel on 3 bikes and IMO it's the best road drop bar on
the market at least for non-brifter brake levers: longish reach, long flat
ramps, modest drop, flat hooks. It does come in 31.8.

[RBW] Atlantis 10 speed friction shifting?

2022-12-10 Thread Sosa
Howdy all,

My Atlantis is equipped with the silver 38/24 crank up front, and an 11-42
10 speed cassette in the rear. For rear shifting, I have the Deore Rapid
Fire trigger shifter (index).

I'd like to switch to friction shifting in the rear, without having to
change the cassette. Any ideas / experience on how to make this work?

 Thanks -

Hi All,

Building up a new Riv and I am parting with some things that won't work for
it.

Paul Love Levers - Long Pull brake levers in great shape minus some typical
wear and some scratches. 155$ Shipped to US

Nitto 65 - 27.2 mm seatpost in great shape, single bolt design. 250mm
length. Again, some typical wear and scratches but otherwise perfect. 65$
Shipped to the US
Any questions, by all means.

Thanks!

How much more tire and fender clearance does the Canti version have
compared to say a Paul Racer side pull ?

Tekro makes the only pair of drop bar long pull levers. I believe the model
is RL520. I love the XTR V-Brake and I have them on my bridgestone. I had
this bike set up with Tosco bars and there was nowhere near enough reach
for me. Unfortunately, youll have to go with bar-end shifters or
downtube shifters if you go that route. I dont think youll be happy with
the braking if you dont use a long pull lever though.
RE: cliffhangers. Grant has said that there's no need for msw's but I see
what youre saying. Ive only put approx. 200 miles on the bike and it has
been fine for me. I think the rims themselves are a little heavy, but if
you're wanting to do touring they're really a great option.

Personally, this bike's utility was covered by bikes I already own ( A riv
rambouillet for road/rando, and a bridgestone XO-2 for commuting/touring).
I think I really just wanted a full rigid MTB, which this is not.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Roadini Clearance and Brake Reach

2022-12-10 Thread Will M
@Michael: I don't have experience with the Ene Ciclo front carrier, but it
seems an elegant solution. I assume the Riv/Nitto Mark's rack would also
be an option with the Racers (it performed the job just fine with the
caliper brakes on my Riv Ram). Agree with your partner about the
"concerted effort" of the GC700 (well said). I was never able to get the
GC610s on my VO dialed in in a way that gave the confidence of a
linear-pull brake... or my old Ultegra sidepulls. Local bike shop was
unsuccessful too. Good points about fenders -- I guess there's only so
much room on a Roadini. There were some comments on an old Quickbeam thread

where some posited that one really wants fenders 10mm wider than the tires
to avoid the small finicky rubbing problems. I note the SKS P50 claims
45mm max tire -- which I may try as the SKS doesn't have certain nuts and
bolt heads inside the fenders like the VOs. Cheers. --Will

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Stephanie A.
At first I thought I really only wanted a Platypus. I bike to get around
the city. What more could I need? And then I started thinking. What if I
want to ride on trails or have a slightly more aggressive ride? I can't
quite say which I'd have as a second bike without riding any of them, but
now I'm thinking I may eventually want an Atlantis, Homer, or Sam...

Frame/ Fork only. So interesting that a lot of folks are running 1x. My dream build might be to install the ee wing crank I already own (170 crank arms) in a 1x setup. I also own (ugly?) Sram GX 12 speed shifter. I was thinking a 9 or 10 cassette? The crank is currently attached to a 30t Absolute Black elliptical ring, which I realize is controversial. But I have enjoyed it. It does not feel weird but I do feel strong on climbs with it. This crank was on my full suspension bike (selling) with a 10-50 SRAM cassette. That 30-50 low worked well for me. I don’t even know if you can get a 50 on other than 12 speed cassettes? Can I use the GX rear derailleur with a cluster that has less than 12 cogs? Sent from my iPhoneOn Dec 10, 2022, at 2:04 PM, Brian Turner wrote:On my Gus, I’m running a 1x drivetrain. Re: [RBW] Re: What's Good - Wide-ish/flared drops edition...

2022-12-10 Thread Philip Williamson
The RM-3s are the same as the WTB bars that look very similar to the new
Potts bars. I snipped that out of my original reply.

I sold the old WTBs from my Quickbeam, and ended up replacing them with
RM-3s. Same bar. Blue Lug has silver in stock, and some stems that work
well with them.

One of the mysterious birthday/Xmas boxes in the house might have a set of
Potts bars for me…

I like the Nitto Noodle quite well, but I think I do want a little
flare and I don't want to bend them myself. So what's good out there? I'm
tempted by the Crust Towel Rack, but I'd love to hear what you all like.

If it helps/matters, the kind of riding I do with the bike it's going
is casual rails-to-trails, some rolling gravel roads, but nothing too
 technical or serious.

 Thanks!

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Jason Zakaras
Hi Masa! Yes lots of fun and fun yet to be had! Here is a link to the two
bikes:

 https://flickr.com/photos/197124752@N07/shares/C33fDW3gf1

(still learning how to upload photos here, or use my iPhone to add to
conversations)

My QB is set up 48-18 free/fixed with a Paul flip flop hub and a SP7
polished front hub laced to polished velocity rims and 700cx42 Cava/Rose
ultradynamico rubber. The crank is Rene Herse SS 171mm crank arm, Paul T
Seatpost, and matching brooks honey saddle with the bar tap. Bars are 600
Towel Rack that are absolutely lovely. The brakes are Paul Cantis using
the cx method of mixing the neos with the touring Cantis. funky monkey on
the front for some added braking bling power. I love this bike its been
used for 150 mile races to causal family riding. I could see myself
touring with it, but like having it clean and rack free to maintain a light
and fast quick, quickbeam

The Hunq is what I call my Disc-o-pHunqapillar, it is a MUSA Waterford Hunq
that has been updated by Waltworks to have disc brakes added, which I think
is a great feature for a heavy touring bike, certainly not critical, but I
like it, especially when I have my twins linked to the back in their burley
trailer. It is currently under construction:
Painting currently pending at D to be the grey/kidneybean/lined lugs
which I think really shines as a classic riv look and fun to have an OG
painting the OG hunq once more
Bars will be 630 silver towel racks with grey newbaums and maroon Oury
grips, black and silver drilled TRP levers
black cable housing with brass ferrels and brass barrel adjusters
rear brake will be the DISC-o part of the pHunq. I'll have a polished Paul
Klamper short pull here, the front will be polished silver Paul Neo-canti
brakes (going to keep it Canti up front) I think this will give me ultimate
stopping power and a cool/funky (phunqE) look to this bike
combo brass/silver headset spacers / polished funky monkey front
1x White industries crank 38t black chainring, silver crank, 12 Spd rear
cassette
black hubs front/rear with shutter precision dyno laced to velocity
cliffhanger with 700c Ultradynamico MARZ rubber
I have marks hub area rack for panniers and a mini Nitto campee with a sine
wave beacon lamp ready for bags and packing not sure if I'll swap out for a
silver or black pass and stow 5 rail rack instead? Not sure for the rear
rack at the moment thoughts?
Nitto Jaguar Seatpost, Black/copper Ti brooks Seatpost to finish it off.
I'll probably start a build thread once I get the Frame/fork back from
Rick. Stoked for sure!

Cheers,

Jason

@Max B; I was really struck with how close your Leoglas is to mine. I
usually run Chris King hubs laced to Pacneti rims with RH 700x38s, but am
trying some slightly wider rubber here.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Roadini Clearance and Brake Reach

2022-12-10 Thread Michael Doleman
Despite the huge price, I am considering getting some Paul Racers for my
partner's Roadini. While the GC700 pair has been serving well enough, she
does report that controlling speed on steeper descents requires a bit of
concerted effort. Not so bad that it actually "needs" fixing, but for
longer term it's worth thinking about. I don't know if the Racers would
definitely perform all that much better, but in looking at the design I
think they very well might -- I'm guessing there would be less flex with
the way the arms are designed. At almost 400 bucks for a set of the
polished finish, though -- wow, that's a serious commitment. I guess that's
what you pay for quality MUSA parts.

Part of the reason I'm using the GC700, though, is to be able to mount one
of the small Ene Ciclo front racks which is specifically designed around
the bolts of the GC610 & 700. I'd have to come-up with a different rack &
mounting configuration (I think) if we decide to go with the Racers. I
guess there's always p-clips :-/ Which leads to another point about the
Roadini -- weird (to me) that Rivdendell touts the utility of racks on any
given bike, but then fails to include fork mounts on the Roadini. I mean,
not a huge-huge issue, but it would sure have been nice. For the little
mini Berthoud bag my partner uses on the Roadini, I think I could likely
get away with just hanging it from a decaleur (somehow), so perhaps that's
the way to go.

Tire/fender-wise, right now we have Rene Herse 35mm tires and
SimWorks/Honjo smooth/51mm fenders. That works reasonably well, with some
minor fit-up headaches. I don't know that a 38 would fit comfortably with
those fenders very well, and I think they are likely about the same as the
VO 50mm. I think they'd rub somewhere unless kept in perfect alignment at
all times. On my Hillborne, I like to run 38mm tires and I have the
SimWork/Honjo smooth/62mm fenders. They fit with lots of room to spare, for
the tire, but I did have to dimple them for clearance at the fork blades
and chain stays. I suspect the same would be true of the Roadini.

In a previous conversation I promised to post my findings on actual
brake reach needs for the new Roadini frames. Specifically, I had been
speculating that the Dia-Compe/Gran-Compe model GC610 center-pull could
work, despite having only 61 of the specified-as-required 63 millimeters
 of
 reach.

My partner just received her new 50cm model, and I've conducted some
initial studies. Findings are interesting, the main one being that there
seems to be a rather huge difference between reach needed for the frame
versus the fork. For the fork, the GC610 very easily works, with plenty to
 spare.

On the frame itself, it's a different matter. The brake shoe is very
close to contacting the (35mm) tire.

Some might argue that it could work, but don't include me in that set
 -- too close for comfort.

So I'll be installing the GC700 model which gives another 9mm of reach
and is a very nice brake as well.

Side note: the fit of the rear wheel axle into the dropout was really
tight. At first I didn't have the wheel set into it properly and it
appeared that the reach was even greater. Make sure you get the wheel
properly seated into the dropout -- with the paint, it's quite tight.

I tried to add photos to this message but was told the post was too
 long with them.

Congratulations Richard ! ... I am very happy for you. I can feel your
elation and your happy dancing. I am glad that you are selling off your
bikes and other goods to support your purchase.

Looking forward to seeing your posts your progress questions and upgrades
as you move forward with your new GUS frame set with pictures of course.

Personally, I remain content with my Clem Smith Jr. "L" as my ATB and

Meets your 26mm diameter requirement.

That’s where I landed when I was looking for a similar change (wider, more
flared noodle, less drop, less reach). They’ve been great. Though like
another poster, I just swapped them for Albatross bars (though upside down

I’ve tried RM-013 and noodles, the the Portola was the best so far. I’m

[RBW] Re: What's Good - Wide-ish/flared drops edition...

2022-12-10 Thread Garth
I used to own the RM-013 long ago but then changed to the 56cm Albatross on
my 62cm/62cm seat/top tube custom Franklin road bike. The 013 was "okay",
but not great enough that I kept it. I'm changing back to a drop bar and
used the bikepacking list as a useful starting point. Mostly I wanted a
shallow-er drop and short-er reach drop bar because I'm using some modern
Tektro RL-341 levers, the small hand version(same body, shorter, closer-in
levers). Compared to how road levers used to be, those Tektro small hand
versions have about the same length and reach to the lever as vintage
Campy, and when mounted they are on about the same plane as the bottom of
the drops. Of course, the lever bodies are so much longer now, hence, I
don't need so much reach in the bar.

I really wasn't keen on anything until I dove into the Zipp Service Course
70 XPLR. It's a rough texture silver, kinda odd, but yeah so what since
it's getting taped and I'll take function over fashion every time. I bought
the 46cm, which is 52cm at the ends. With it's modest flare and outsweep
riding the hoods feel like a regular drop bar. The top has a slight
backwseep also, which is really quite nice to feel as I never liked
straight tops since the wrists don't conform to straight. The top is oval
also, very nice in hand ! It's a 31.8 clamp, which seems to clamp more
efficiently , and I only use open face zero or positive rise stems anyway.
Yea to threadless quill adapters for the adaptability. I love most of the
"vintage" design of many things except when it comes to stems with negative
rise and enclosed clamps. I mean they look wonderful but they don't apply
practically for my sensibilities.

>From the bikepacking article of the SC 70 XPLR :

*There are two metrics that set these bars apart from others in this list:
outsweep and flare. Something that often bothers me about more dramatically
flared bars is that the brake hoods sit at an awkward angle. It’s not
always a problem as different bars are angled and tweaked differently, but
sometimes the bend at the point of flare exaggerates the angle of the
levers, making grabbing them from the drops a little awkward. At any rate,
Zipp’s goal was to develop a bar with a hoods-dominant position at the
forefront, in turn, solving some of these issues. I ride in the hoods much
of the time, or with my hands resting on the bar curve just behind the
hoods, so this piqued my interest. To accomplish this—and maintain control
in the drops—Zipp landed on 5° flare and 11° outsweep.*

*The bar’s drop shape features 70mm reach, but the drop is a shallower
115mm. The service Course also features an ergonomic top with 3° backsweep,
100mm clamping area on top of bar, Di2 bar end junction compatible.*

[RBW] Re: How you choose 2 Rivendells?

2022-12-10 Thread Masa
Hi Jason, I haven't ridden neither of them but sounds like if you have them
you can not only ride everywhere but also have fun everywhere as much as
possible as you said. I would like to see photos of the bikes if possible!

John- thanks for that GaiaGPS link. It's the first time I've seen it
after hearing about it for years, it's a really nice set up. I really like
how if you are just scrolling though photos it is simultaneously moving
your point on the route as well in the background. Looks like a lovely
 ride.

It's really interesting to read how people are enjoying/planning to
 ride 2 Rivendells!
It seems like most of you have 2 different type Rivs for different
occasions as I was vaguely imaging for my future as well.

As Keith pointed out the tricky point is that if you get second
bike for a different purpose which you barely have chances to go, you
 will
end up to ride just one but not both of them.
That made me think that I should get the second Riv if I "need" it
while I got my first one mostly because I did "want" it.
(Well it's really hard to separate these feelings though)
Anyway I am going to ride my Platypus as much as possible for now
and will see if I need another one:)

Otherwise actually it's a really simple thing. Having 2 bikes you
really love and "ride all the time and alternate daily" as John said.
John, if I'm not mistaken I have seen your Hunq on Blue Lug's blog
before. You have lived in Japan? The Hunq and the Atlantis are both so
 beautiful!
