[RBW] Re: Dynamo Wiring inside the Fork and Frame?

2023-03-22 Thread Matthew Williams

Hi everyone,

In the weeks to come I’m going to be revisiting the wire-inside-the-fork
trick. However, the hole is too small for the existing dynamo wires and I
do not want to enlarge the hole.

What would happen if I used a smaller-gauge wire inside the fork, to
connect the dynamo to the headlight?

Will a smaller-gauge wire be unable to handle the voltage/amperage from the
dynamo? Will the headlight and taillight outputs be weaker? Or will the
difference between the existing/stock wire and a smaller gauge be
imperceptible?

As always, your wisdom, advice, experience, and opinions are appreciated!

Hi everyone,

Most bikes I see with the SON dynamo have the wire wound around the right
front fork blade. I want to run the wire inside the fork using the small
hole near the dropout.

I’ve already fished a thin wire through the fork as a leader i.e. I can
attach the leader to the SON dynamo wire and pull it through the fork,
unless the dynamo wire is too thick. Below are photos of the leader wire I
fished through the fork.

Is this possible, or is it a bad idea? Has anyone here managed to achieve
this setup? If so, how did you do it, and please post photos of your
internal wiring setups!

Re: [RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-22 Thread Joe Bernard
I could see that being a conversation in 2001. By the time I was drawing up
my custom in 2019 Rivs had been running the Mark's Rack location for so
long that when I specified "the mid-fork braze-ons" Grant knew what I
meant. If I'd wanted something different to match traditional low-rider
racks I would have made sure I was clear about it.

When I ordered my custom Riv I requested mounts for a front rack. Grant stated it was tough to place the braze-ons since each rack has unique attachment points. Long wheelbase: I've ridden a bunch of both, they're both good but my
custom is a longbike cuz it's MAGIC.

What Grant's opinion was 20-25 years ago: has changed on a bunch of stuff.
The first iteration of Atlantis didn't come with mid-fork mounts, now just
about everything from the company does. He changed his mind.

[RBW] Re: Let's talk about the All Rounder

2023-03-22 Thread R. Alexis
Hello all.

I don't have an All Rounder, but I do have the first generation Waterford
built Rivendell Mountain. Those first generation Rivendell Road, Allrounder
and Mountain offered several options when ordering. Rack mount placement,
Headtube extention, cream painted accent headtube, etc. I remember when
ordering and mulling over things asking Grant about getting the bike built
with KGB(Koski, Guy, Breezer) hooded drop outs on the frame and rollercam
mounts. He gave a had no on the Breezer drop outs, but did offer to do the
rollercam brake mounts. I ended up just doing standard canti brakes.

Although a lot of the features offered on later Rivendells are nice, the
more time passes, the more I am less likely to give up my Rivendell
Mountain. It is still configured the way I built it originally. I have
changed out things, just to change them back. Swapped out the Suntour
XC-Pro thumb shifters for XC-Pro Wishbone shifters, then changed back.
Changed out the Wilderness Trail Bikes SST saddle for a Brooks B17, then
changed back. I did finally swap out the Ritchey CrossBite 1.5 tires for
Schwalbe Sammy Slick and changed the Profile Design Kage for a Tallac Duel
stainless steel bottle cage. I have not ridden any current Rivendell
offerings. Don't know that I have ridden any other Rivendell offering,
other than my Mountain.

I do have a Bridgestone 1991 MB-0(Zip), 1993 XO-1 and 1994 MB-1. I enjoy
riding my MB-1 and XO-1 when I pull them out.

I am a bit skeptical on the whole long wheelbase iteration that are the new
Rivs. That is mostly an issue of being used to a less long wheelbase.
Pretty sure they ride fine.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Doug , if you're referring to the 63mm VO fenders.. They should fit.
I believe they are featured in this blog post from a few years ago on a 29"
wheeled App with some mid-50mm tires

I wonder if getting a set of the V-O 63mm 700c fenders with the plan to
reshape them would be nuts? Apparently you just gently bend them as if
you’re trying to widen them and it tightens up the curve… I suppose it
would be pretty cool if it worked, and pretty darn lame if they ended up
 ugly or ruined…

Well I haven’t done anything with them yet, but I went ahead and ordered
the 700C 63mm fenders while they were on sale. My thought is that I just
skip the centimeter or so where the fenders pass between the forks and the
seat stays when I’m reshaping. I doubt the minor difference in width will

fine. I’ll update with pics when I get to work on them…

I’d be curious to hear what sort of justification Grant had for claiming that p-clamps were superior to actual mid-fork braze ons. [RBW] WTB: IRD Sub-C FD

2023-03-22 Thread J Schwartz
Greetings,
These
are sold out at Riv...
Curious if anyone picked one up and doesn't need it.
I'm rebuilding my Sam and it looks like my current FD is going to be too
long for the 40/30 crankset going on.
I'll get the Stubby skeleton key FD from RBW if no one is wanting to part
with their IRD Sub-C

Thanks
JS

I am selling my 48cm Sam Hillborne. Never thought this day would come,
but here we are -- Must thin the herd. I am the original owner (purchased
in 2010). This is being sold as a full-build, as pictured. This bike has
been used and well-loved, but it has always been stored (when not in use)
indoors. Buyer should expect use marks on everything, paint chips, etc.
It's not beat up, but it was used. I have many photos that are closer-up,
so just reach out if you'd like details or more photos.

 - 48cm Samuel Hillborne frameset
 - 170mm Sugino crank with 46-36-26 (or 24) teeth (I need to verify the
little one, but if it makes a difference for you, just ask, and I'm happy
 to double check)
 - Sora front derailleur
 - XT rear derailleur
 - Shimano bar end shifters (3x9)
 - Cassette is 11-32
 - Tektro cantilever brakes
 - Nitto stem (5cm reach) - note that it is at its lowest point, but
could be raised higher, if needed/wanted
 - Schwalbe Marathon tires (650Bx42 - they only have about 10 miles on
 them)
 - 650B wheelset (purchased from Rivendell after owning the bike for
several years... they may have a few hundred miles on them, at most)
 - Albatross handlebars (currently flipped upside down)
 - Brooks B-17 leather saddle
 - Nitto Campee rear rack
 - VP flat pedals
 - Two bottle cages; one of them is designed to hold a larger bottle,
the other is a standard King cage
 - Kickstand
 - Currently, the handlebars have leather bar tape that has been
well-loved ( new owner will likely want new bar tape, but I'm happy to send
 it along)
 - Nitto F15 Handlebar bag support. I have a bag I've used on this, and
am happy to send it along to the new owner, but be aware it has been
plastered with various patches over the years which may or may not be to
the new owner's liking. :-) It's a great bag though!

Anything I've left out, please feel free to drop me a note. I'm asking
$1500 (buyer will pay exact shipping costs). The bike is not yet packed up,
but if someone has interest, I can get a box and get it packed to get a
shipping quote. Also, I've given the Sam a wet wipe down, but note that it
could use a "real" bath at some point. Everything is frozen here for the
foreseeable winter though, so I don't think I can make it happen at this
 time.

Re: [RBW] Re: Things I Feel Guilty About: Bike Life

2023-03-22 Thread Tyler Dewey
Leah,

Pops spent a lot of time this year digitizing all the photos from a big
bike tour we did together in 1996. We rode from Seattle to Minnesota. I
think he recently posted some of them to his Flickr. I'll have to track
down the link (or he can post it here). I always liked riding (and the
conversations and food that accompanied riding), but reading the Rivendell
Readers when I was younger definitely helped develop my love of bikes as
more than an exercise machine.

Re: [RBW] Re: Widest fenders that easily fit a Joe Appa?

2023-03-22 Thread Paul Yokanovich
That's an idea Doug, however by reshaping the 63mm 700c fender to fit the
smaller diameter 650b you would be widening the fender. You would probably
want to start with a fender that's more narrower.

Hi Everyone, at the risk of being presumptuous I went ahead and created
this Doodle scheduling poll to see what (if any) weekend dates in May/June
would work best for a Riv group meetup in Asheville. Just click on the
link and it will guide you to a calendar that will allow you to select the
dates you are (and are not) available for a weekend meetup. After about a
week, I can post the results and we can either take the planning further
from there or else pick different dates and try again. Here is the link

 the
biggest hurdle is getting a date nailed down. Any summer date would
probably work for me, but I’d suggest late May/early June if we wanted
 to
avoid July 4. Not quite as many tourists here then.

I'm thinking a 3-4 hour ride at Bent Creek early in the day and
then possibly an afternoon to early evening ride on the River Arts

greenway concluding with a stop for food & beverage.

 Anyone want to weigh in?

Re: [RBW] FD question

Fun fact: On many Singers, the frame is purpose-built for a specific front derailleur. On mine, half of the derailleur’s clamp was removed and replaced with braze-on fittings. The derailleur bolts to the fitting. This reduces weight and makes the attachment stronger.  But it locks you in to that specific derailleur and a given chainring size, since the mech can’t be moved up or down. Vive le France! –Eric NOn Mar 22, 2023, at 11:31 AM, greenteadrinkers wrote:Eric Norris - thanks! Hi Scott — I haven't run this combo but I think it will work. The seat

Older, svelte road front derailers without ramps typically work well with

Jan, for a time at least, ran a Sachs-Huret front derailer on his mule with

What are you running for a derailer out back to match the refined beauty of

Considering sourcing a Huret Jubilee Front Derailleur for my Sam.

Currently, I have Sugino XD2 Bash guard / 40 / 24 and a Jim 11/36 7-speed

Re: [RBW] Re: cycling attire for cold rain

2023-03-22 Thread Touriste-Routier
Neoprene can work well, but the danger is you get wet from perspiration,
since it doesn't breathe. Wet isn't a problem per se, but if you get cold
from being wet, that is another story. Of course you'll be cold and wet
without proper gear too...

The biggest problem I had with my neoprene cyclocross gloves (all winter
gloves actually), is trying to put them back on with sweaty hands after
needing to remove them (stops, repairs, etc.). Lesson learned, I always
ride with spare gloves on winter rides.

That's interesting, I might give some a shot this spring. I get the

with wool and a shell that's at least waterproof enough to keep the
majority of water out - not much ends up being truly waterproof in those
conditions. I can certainly believe that the water-going folks are onto
 something though.

Re: [RBW] Re: cycling attire for cold rain

2023-03-22 Thread a spen
As a cold weather cyclist in Maine in the 80's, with Minnesota and the
Appalachian mountains more recently, I'll add to the OP's revelation
regarding neoprene that a set of neoprene pogies (or bar mitts) on the
outside, coupled with wool gloves on the inside, gets me through everything
from 40 degrees and rainy, to -20 and breezy. I simply match the
thickness/warmth of the inner wool gloves or mitts to the conditions, and
if it's 50 with wind and rain, just pogies alone will keep my paws warm and
toasty. I've experimented with all manner of thick and clumsy arctic
military mitts (compliments of my time spent in Uncle Sam's Navy) to boiled
wool mitts (compliments of my time spent on a Maine "lobsta boat") and
found an outer layer neoprene pogie supplemented with the aforementioned
woolies underneath provide the greatest comfort & flexibility for a range
of temps and conditions while on my ride.

Folks on this board might already have this information, but it was a
 revelation to me.

It was 48 and heavily raining on, Tuesday I think, riding from Goleta
to Oxnard, CA. We (my son and I) were uncomfortably cold, with many miles
 to go.

We came upon a surfing shop. I know nothing about surfing or scuba, but
I bought the socks, gloves, and a hat that surfers wear with their
wetsuits. Wow, what a game changer. We were instantly comfortable. For
heavy rain in cold weather, neoprene is great for cycling.
