[RBW] Re: Bosco for small bikes

2024-01-22 Thread Joe Bernard
Yeah the second one has never made sense. It'll get your bars up high on a
bike with a tiny headtube but said bike will also have a short toptube.

There also exists a 173mm Silver crank arm size. If that would also suit
your needs, you can expand your search possibilities by adding the 173 size
t to your wish list.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-22 Thread Tony Lockhart
@Patrick - Leo is a bit more nimble and rigid to a comparably spec'd Sam.
Sam seems a bit more flexy, especially with out of the seat climbing. Seems
like the Sam is all over the place when it comes to steering--my Leo seems
to track way better at low speeds. For context, I've had a million setups
on my Sam during the last 14 years and it's currently running a flat bar,
2x8 setup, on 44mm RH tires. My Leo is running a drop bar, 3x8 setup, and
32mm Pasela TGs.38mm Shikoros arriving this Wednesday. Sam used to have
the same parts currently on the Leo. I think the differences are very
slightboth bikes are amazing.

@Jay - Congrats on the purchase--you picked a winner. Like you, I also
purchased a dark gold 57cm frame. I couldn't be happier. Leo is a champ.

First post here! I've been reading some of the threads and this sounds

I ordered the dark gold Roadini (57) from the only shop in Canada that
sells Riv (C Cycles) and will be picking it up in a few weeks when I'll
 be visiting Montreal.

Looking for this to be a project bike, that evolves over time. For now
though, I had a lot of new / lightly used parts on hand, so I'll be using
those and having the bike shop supply the rest (including some handbill
wheels for some lightly used 43mm GKSS tires I'm using on my Fargo in the
winter). Build will be Shimano 11sp, with DT shifters and Tektro RRL
 brake
 levers, and Tektro brakes.

Purpose of the bike is all-road (where I live, a lot of that is paved,
but there are gravel roads further out), but will not be used much on
 local
mixed-surface trails (where the Fargo excels). My current road bike will
be jealous, but I'm not kicking her to the curb just yet!

 Photos to come in February.

Solid bike, Brent! So glad to see how nicely it turned out, especially with
that gorgeous silver drivetrain.

I've got about 300ish miles on my Roadini now and I couldn't be happier.
Oddly enough, I have been spending more time on my Hillborne because I
don't want to feel guilty by leaving it in the garage. Can't wait to hear
your impression by the end of the summer.almost wondering if you'll
prefer the Leo to the Sam.

Happy trails,

I'm not a fan of long wheelbase bikes either. Although - amusingly, I have
definitely spent more time on my Hubbuhubbuh and the Cunningham Hubbuhubbuh
than all my other bikes put togeter.

Try finding a longer wheelbase bike than a Hubbuhubbuh.

[RBW] Bosco for small bikes

2024-01-22 Thread Peter Fray
Hello everyone

The rivbike page for the Bosco handlebars mentions this -

"Here’s its best use:
- Longish top tube bikes and upright riding. Mountain bike conversions to
supa-comfee cruisers.
- Making too-small bikes fit and feel better."

I think I understand the first use - since the handlebar reaches far back
it would make long reach bikes easier to fit. How do you make sense of the
second one? Wouldn't it make the small bikes feel smaller? Or perhaps the
reference is to the handlebars rise and not reach?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Peter

[RBW] Re: Favorite Bay Area S24Os?

2024-01-22 Thread christian poppell
Hey Jesse,

I've visited Samuel P many times via bike. Pre 2020, hiker biker site at
Samuel P was no reservation required. Even when the hiker/biker was "full"
there was always enough room to squeeze in. The best part of sharing the
site with others is hearing their stories. Some were overnighters like me,
others were from Europe and hiking up the California coast. You might want
to check on the policies of the state park as many things have changed
since 2020.

Riding to go camping was a revelation for me. I could ride to a
destination, sleep, then ride back which doubled the distance between
points I could ride in a day. It sounds silly writing it out but was
totally mind blowing at the time as all my rides prior were planned around
getting back to where I started.

Here's a write up I did back in 2017 about riding up to Samuel P on a
Quickbeam.
 https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/8AYdSsNsh7E/m/h5unB6v_AwAJ

Please give us an update after your trip. always enjoy reading others ride
reports :)

Still in search. Had a close call on a 56 Atlantis that actually turned
out to be a 53. And Vernon found his Hunq a new home (congrats to the new
owner). I am now looking at a 56 on Facebook Marketplace. Pretty far from
home, but maybe I could swing it. Quick question: Can someone look at the
pics and tell me what's going on with the chainstay near the dropout. It
looks kinda curvy to me. I can't tell if my eyes are playing trick on me.
I read that some of the Toyo Atlantis models had curvy chainstays. I had a
58 once and it did have a pretty serious curve near the crank to allow for
more tire clearance with a shorter chainstay (downside was that it was hard
to fit a double crank without a super long BB). I have never seen this
other curve near the dropouts. What do you all think?

Thanks in advance,

multi-release functionality that allows you to quickly get out of your
pedals when the need arises. These cleats are a great choice for anyone new

right amount of movement while also providing adequate pedal engagement
   security

   - Built to Last: Made from heat treated forged steel that delivers
durable long lasting performance even under the most severe riding
   conditions

[RBW] Bridgestone MB5 + Goodies

2024-01-22 Thread Maxwell Seebeck
Hello! I have a wonderful MB5 up for grabs, unfortunately the garage is
getting full and the parts bin needs to be thinned out, plus I haven't
ridden this bike all year so it is time to let it go!. I got this from a
trade in at a bikeshop, and have configured it in a handful of ways since
2021 and would be an awesome project build for some one looking to build it
up how they want to use it! Frame is in very good condition and has no
major surface rust. I put T9 in the frame once a year since I got the bike.
Hanger is straight and has never been crashed under my watch. Brakes and
drivetrain are NOT operating and you will need to do this yourself or have
a shop/buddy do it for you! I have it this way so you can set it up how you
want to, as I am also including multiple handlebars and stems with the
price.

I am asking for $750 and that includes everything that is pictured
**NOT PICTURED: DEORE 9SP MECH**

ok, everything that is included for $750 (Also open to reasonable offers,
no trades, would prefer local pick up (Issaquah,WA)) Frame: Bridgestone MB5

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-22 Thread aeroperf
I wanted a “medium” touring bike, so I got an A Homer Hilsen frame.
I was also impressed with how the 24mm, eternal bearing, Hollowtech II
drive system felt. It was, to my feet, noticeably stiffer than the square
taper BBs I had been using for years.

So, loath to screw up a Rivendell frame, I bought an ’82 Team Fuji from
Craigslist, and used the rebuild of that to determine how to pull a square
taper BB and put on the Hollowtech BBR60. I also put on a few other
goodies (Sora 3030 system,105 brakes, Velocity Road rear hub, re-laced the
wheels) to learn how it all worked.

I learned that those spacers we’ve been referring to are fragile and don’t
want to be between two moving parts. Also that you put the drive side
external cup on, then run the crank through, then screw on the non-drive
side cup instead of trying to push the crank through a fully assembled BB
(my LBS taught me that). Also that putting on the crank, then measuring
the chainline, then pulling off the crank to change the drive side spacers
was an iterative process.

Then I built up the Homer with the MT800 BB and the Shimano FC-M590 triple
crank. It only took one iteration of spacers to get the chainline. The
MT800 worked perfectly on the 68mm BB shell. I also - wanting to see if
this stuff was interchangeable - pulled it all off at one point and tried a
Token TK878EX BB. The Token was cheaper then, and came in AHH Blue. It
also worked perfectly.

The Homer was not my longed-for perfect tourer, so I passed it on for a
Soma Saga. But I kept the drive and BB. The Saga also has a 68mm BB shell
and 135mm rear spacing. Only one iteration to get the spacers/chainline
right, and they are a different config from the Homer, but it works great.

Other lessons learned - the 24mm bottom bracket is more fragile than a
sealed square-taper BB (also more fragile than the good old 1/4 inch ball
bearings in an un-sealed square-taper setup). I ruined one 24mm BB before
I asked my LBS and got a lesson in installation. I also got told that the
24mm BB has to be replaced more often just from use. I haven’t killed one
yet, but if your crank starts making a hissing sound, check the BB first.

Going back to Keith’s original post, a little asymmetry is the price paid
for a correct chainline when your crank shaft is fixed length. Spacers and
assembly iterations are the price paid for a 24mm BB that is supposed to
fit both 73mm and 68mm shells - it must be built for the bigger size. Max,
the MTN should work fine, for a few grams extra weight, and might last
longer. And, finally, if you hit a snag ask your LBS. They've had to deal
with this stuff for years.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-22 Thread Jay
While I'm not concerned with the weight I'll land on after the build, I
would like to keep up with my friend who I ride weekly with. He's good
going my speed (he's naturally faster), and I'm hoping the speed on this
bike isn't much lower than my current road bike. Like many say, it's the
total weight including the rider that counts...so I started eating better
since ordering the frame to see if total weight is the same, or better! I
do have a second wheel set I'm planning to use, occasionally, and those
wheels together with then 30mm tires will be lighter, and have better hubs
(will be interesting to see how they feel when riding compared to the other
wheels with 43mm GKSS).

 don't

I'm leaning hard into a Roadini that I may put a Campy 10 Triple group

[RBW] Re: Favorite Bay Area S24Os?

2024-01-22 Thread Jesse Bussell
Thanks! I was able to a camp reservation in Feb for Angel Isand, i'll
report back on how it went.

Donzaemon - I think most "require" a reservation, but some do have first
some site for bikers/hikers. A few friends also let me know that they have
never had an issue showing up during the week. Weekends are probably a
different story.

Calipers can squeal too. I had a pair of to quality -- forged -- single
pivots of which the front squealed only in cold weather -- this with good
condition salmon pads. The same brake and pads had not squealed on an
earlier bike.

I recommend using the A600 if you can find them, because (similar to most road
pedals) they return to the upright position with the pedal perpendicular to the
ground, so you can clip in without looking. The ES600 spins 360, so the pedal
can be upside down or any which way when you go to clip back in, so you might
need to rotate the pedal 180 degrees into the correct position when you clip in.

With that said, I still chose the ES600 when I replaced my Look Keo pedals, so
I can walk around more comfortably and can live with the extra effort when I
clip in.

Toshi

[RBW] Re: Roadini Build is complete

2024-01-22 Thread John Bokman
Brenton, thanks for the post; nice looking bike. As weather allows, please
let us know how this bike rides compared to your Sam (especially when it
was in drop-bar mode). I'm sure I'm not the only Sam rider who is curious
about this comparison.

Very nice build! well thought out...nothing 'stuck on' or out of character

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-22 Thread iamkeith
Max, I can't imagine why you'd have a problem but, obviously, someone with
more experience should chime in. I'm going to "try" to use this same bb
without the spacers, and get a different crank. I'm not sure I can find
one with the right spindle length, right spindle diameter, and 10 speed
compatible rings in suitable sizes, but I know for a fact that the cups
install just fine without any spacers at all. (in this case, they each
have an aluminum sleeve that telescopes over each other, but same thing as
an accordian plastic sleeve in function.)

I haven't ridden it enough to decide if it was the perfect +1 yet, but it
was a fun project. I will report back after some miles.

It was great way to spend my time during 2 weeks of Portland snow+ice+wind.
Did lots of research, and learned a ton more about components I was only
mildly interested in before. Shopping for NOS+used parts on eBay was
surprisingly fun, especially if you're after components that most folks
ignore. I watched all the "built by blue lug" videos, highly recommend
watching for both zen, appreciation of expertise, and educational
instruction (though they are not intentionally instructional).

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-22 Thread iamkeith
To wrap this up, and hopefully make it useful for someone else down the
line:

I think Garth is right. This crank will not work on this bike.

Even if an X-type crankset is advertized as working with both 68 and 73 mm
shells, it's not that straight forward. It can technically "work," but
there will be tradeoffs with chainline or centering or Q-factor not being
ideal. If I had a 73mm shell and used one spacer on the drive side, I'd
have a 47.5 mm chainline AND symmetry between the arms. I'd still have to
just "hope" it cleared the chainstays though.

This is exactly why I was so slow to adopt X-type cranksets. After a
lifetime of being able to pick a square taper spindle in virtually any
length I wanted, the inability to adjust width didn't seem intuitively
right. If my other forrays (on mountain bikes) hadn't been so
plug-and-play easy, I would have questioned this more before ordering.
Then again, there was nothing about this on the product description webpage
that alluded to the dimensional details or specs.

For anybody interested, here's the product link. It's really not bad
quality and is attractive and has many chainring options available, with
shift aids, AND is available SILVER! I think Riv was out of everything in
the configuration I needed, and this was on sale for a really good price.
For a 10- or 11-speed mountain/hillibike with 73mm shells and 135 or wider
rear hub, it's a good option.

@jason
Y'know what, maybe it is! Lol, I forget. I dunno anything about Rivendells
compared to you folks.

@brenton
Thanks! These are both Carradice Camper Longflaps in green. I love the
rustic look over time (though I think the one in the back was actually
brand new in this photo - first trip!) This bike is heavily inspired by
Ultraromance's old Atlantis, the one on Bikepacking.com, so had to have
'em! I find it is just enough space for a proper trip with cooking
equipment but there's not tons of room to spare. I don't drink anymore
though, and the lack of needing to carry a bottle of a group of cans
certainly helps!

@Brian
Nice to see you here! Glad you're living the NR20 life. I love that little
guy. Funny enough, I'm actually running a Erlen 2.0 from Blue Lug x Ocean
Air Cycles rn... I like them both very much but all time fav is definitely
the R10! I think I'ma take the R10 to Japan this Spring...

@Richard
Thanks very much! It's been the dream bike for quite some time and I'm
really, really happy with how it's turned out. I change the build all the
time (at least the bars and racks,) and it's never disappointed me. This
crank, I think, is certainly the centrepiece and I think it is very much
worth it if you can spring for it! I love how they look on
singlespeed/fixed gear setups. I'm strongly considering getting another one
for my fixed gear/ss bike! Send pics if you do it!

Piaw, what part of the country are you from? The expression, "...squeal

where I live (well, maybe the South or even the Plain states, not sure).
Seems to me like most folk out there on the West Coast wouldn't know what
you meant by that and would just give you a funny look.

Grant's approval shouldn't matter. What I'm curious about is how the bike
performs under hard braking. My understanding is that disc brakes demand
much beefier dropouts and forks, and whether the disc brake won't cause
problems with super skinny fork blades that Rivendell uses because the
assumption is that you'll be using rim brakes. Any approval or "street

I use rim brakes because I never found disc brakes that didn't squeal like
a stuck pig under hard braking conditions. Despite all my attempts I've
only managed to wear out rims from braking in muddy conditions exactly
once, and that was on a 1993 Bridgestone MB-3 that was treated like a
submersible (the bike shop used that as an excuse not to warranty the BB

then it took me a good 10 years to do so! Granted I live in California, but
I also deliberately make it a point to ride my Roadini off road whenever I
can in the winter season --- when it's cold and rainy the slowness of a
gravel bike no longer bothers me.

Its a new standard to take the frame pump market by storm :) Joking aside,
I'll update this space once I get the Topeak (43cm-49cm ) in hand. I'm
hopeful that I can eek out a few more cm past the recommended size range.
Otherwise, us 50cm Platy owners will be waiting for the RBW frame pump.

The Topeak looks like a good option. Ill pick one up and give it a try.

For me, I prefer the utilitarian aspect and low cost of the Topeak. I can
better justify leaving a 40$ pump at the bike rack rather than a 75-100$
one. I do like the look of the Silca though.

Thanks again Ed for the suggestions!

I ordered the dark gold Roadini (57) from the only shop in Canada that
sells Riv (C Cycles) and will be picking it up in a few weeks when I'll
 be visiting Montreal.

Looking for this to be a project bike, that evolves over time. For now
though, I had a lot of new / lightly used parts on hand, so I'll be using
those and having the bike shop supply the rest (including some handbill
wheels for some lightly used 43mm GKSS tires I'm using on my Fargo in the
winter). Build will be Shimano 11sp, with DT shifters and Tektro RRL brake
 levers, and Tektro brakes.

Purpose of the bike is all-road (where I live, a lot of that is paved,
but there are gravel roads further out), but will not be used much on local
mixed-surface trails (where the Fargo excels). My current road bike will
be jealous, but I'm not kicking her to the curb just yet!

 Photos to come in February.

[RBW] Re: was for sale inquiry now how I got into Rivendell & why I think I want a Roaduno.

2024-01-22 Thread Richard Rose
Preface: I promise Rivendell content here without a for sale post. Doug, it’s funny how our cycling fortunes / preferences change & evolve over time. I was a lifetime “roadie” & had my dream bike for maybe 20 years - a Richard Sachs. But when I discovered real singletrack I was transformed. However I developed a serious lower back issue requiring surgery which turned out great. My surgeon who was not a cyclist suggested a suspension bike might be called for. Well, doctors orders, right?I had tired of road riding so I sold the Sachs & bought the Ibis. And it was fantastic. But, mountain biking requires driving for me and I kind of discovered gravel as a way to ride when time did not permit a trail ride. I needed a suitable gravel capable bike & discovered the Clem L. As a well informed (?) cyclist I knew of Rivendell since their start. But I never considered seriously one of their bikes. The only road bikes I took seriously were ones with the builders name on the downtube. However the Clem intrigued me to no end. The promise of a supremely comfortable gravel capable bike that I did not have to throw a leg over seemed like a great idea. And it was & is really the perfect bike for most of my cycling needs. Unexpectedly it kind of reintroduced road biking to me albeit a different form of it. It’s off road worthiness convinced me that a Gus could replace the Ibis as my dedicated trail bike. Yes, I am a bit less aggressive riding it but I am more comfortable & enjoying a different trail riding experience. Now full circle & as much as I love my two Rivendell “Hillibike’s” I find myself intrigued by the prospect of another long chainstay Riv but fully lugged & relatively light weight & minimal - the Roaduno. If I am to get one the Ibis must go. I do not ride it anyway…Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 22, 2024, at 8:34 AM, Doug H. wrote:Selling a carbon full suspension mtb to make room for a Roaduno!! Re: [RBW] TRP RRL Hood Black to Gum

I replaced my gum hoods with new gum hoods, since the old ones on my

bars. The new hoods slipped over the brake levers with a little
encouragement, so I didn't have to take the levers off the bars, which was

The only nos A 600 I found was $138.00 on ebay

I recommend using the A600 if you can find them, because (similar to most road
pedals) they return to the upright position with the pedal perpendicular to the
ground, so you can clip in without looking. The ES600 spins 360, so the pedal
can be upside down or any which way when you go to clip back in, so you might
need to rotate the pedal 180 degrees into the correct position when you clip in.

With that said, I still chose the ES600 when I replaced my Look Keo pedals, so
I can walk around more comfortably and can live with the extra effort when I
clip in.

Toshi

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Piaw: I'm curious, how light is your Roadini?

More general question to the audience: How does the current Roadini differ
from the original Sam Hillborne? I owned one of the latter and it would be
interesting to use this Sam as a gauge for understanding the Roadini.

Aside: I'm thinking (just thinking; action may come but later) of turning
that Libertas into an on-and-offroad beater because I think it will take a
38 mm tire. The original issue Sam was limited to IIRC 38 or 40 mm tires so
I hope that this might be a more nimble handling and lighter (and
beater-sh) Sam surrogate.
