Re: [RBW] Favorite clip-in/flat pedal combo?

Ezy-superior locks on with a twist. If you want to lock the regular Ezy 
system, there are little plastic clips that slip on. I really like the 
Ezy-superior system and both our bikes here have it. My work space is 
really small and it's super nice to be able to easily take the pedals off 
to maneuver the bike around. also easier to get a bike or two into the back 
of a car with the pedals off.

I like the American Classic setback posts. Occasionally they come up in 
28.6. 

Another option if you have a makerspace or friend with a lathe is to turn 
down a 27.2.

@Patrick,

It's the curse of the gangly-large frames--there just aren't that many 
riders out there that can fit a 63cm frame. Basic supply & demand, right? 
It does have one key blemish--the pointy lug that points up the seatpost 
was bent in transport (boxed so they removed the seatpost). it couldn't be 
bent back and accept a seatpost, so cut, filed, and touch-up paint. Never 
bothered me.

Ok, the buildI had some different parts on it for the last couple 
years, but am making it more Rivish for sale using many of the parts that 
came on it when I acquired it.


   - Velocity A23 with 28mm Gatorskins
   - VO Grand Cru Brakes (SO much better than Tektros)
   - 105 FD, RD and Crankset
   - 9-Speed cassette (11-30)
   - Shimano barends
   - Nitto Dynamic Seatpost with a Brooks B17
   - 44cm Noodle Handlebars, IRD levers, 9cm Nitto Tallux stem
   - VO Platform Pedals

I think that's it. 

And yes, they are expensive. I'll pour myself a nice, expensive glass of 
scotch the day they get off my auto insurance policy.

I’m hoping the bars come back in stock.  Iv had my eye on them for the last
year with all the tease photos in IG. I didn't think they’d sell out in 5
minutes. Ron said in the Radivist comments section on the write up on them
they may have been shorted a little more then half the order.  So I have
hope that’s true and they’ll have more in stock soon rather then wait a
year or more for the next order if they do re order. Aside from that they
have a very elegant shape to them.

My Roadeo is of a similar setup as Bill's--threadless setup, modern 
components, 35mm RH Bon Jon tires. For me it's exactly what I want--fast, 
comfortable, and I don't wince at rough chip seal roads. I did try mounting 
the Barlows on the Roadeo but it was a no-go. Before my Roadeo, I picked up 
a Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross-- after speaking with Mike V a couple 
times I took the plunge on it as my primary road bike and it saw a lot of 
road miles until the Roadeo came into the picture.

Tim commented that he wished the Sam was lighter and had more snap. He's 
right in that the Roadeo definitely has more snap, but functionally is 
different. I also had a 2TT 62cm Sam until last year--like Tim, I was 
always reconfiguring it--I liked it most in full gravel mode with 43mm 
gravel tires, Albastache bars while the BMC stayed my road bike. But I took 
the BMC offroad and realized that the it was the functional equivalent of 
the Sam, AND took larger tires and had canti brakes! And for me, it was a 
little lighter, more spritely, and just more fun so I sold the Sam.

The BMC makes a fine road bike and still sees a share of my road miles, but 
the Roadeo simply does roads better.

Selling my Sam frame/fork/original headset & bottom bracket.

   - 62cm with the double top tube
   - Takes centerpull brakes (not included)
   - Purchased from RBW in 2016

Generally fine shape with a couple nicks. Little bit of amber shellac 
splatter where I got a little careless covering some Newbaums, but you 
don't see it unless you're looking for it.

It just doesn't see much action and takes up a lot of space.

buyer arranges/pays associated shipping costs.

I run Minimotos on my BMW Monstercross and I really like them over cantis. 
I can fit the 43mm Panaracer Gravelking SKs under them. In the winter I put 
fenders on (45mm SKS) over 38mm Barlow Pass tires. The cable slightly 
touches one of the fenders, but it doesn't affect operation or safety. 

They are easy to install and setup.

I also use the IRD Drilliums on my Noodles and like them a lot. They have a 
button where you can open the brakes up more to remove a wider tire without 
deflating.

The main reason I like them is they have a "thicker" feel between my thumbs 
and index finger when riding the hoods--but that may be what you describe 
as "boxy." The Shimanos are too narrow for me (but then I have bigger 
hands).

My first attempt at installing a new crankset on a square-taper BB went as 
poorly as it could a few years back. The spindle lengths matter for what? 
Here's how it went (*Bold are actions I took*, *italics are my thoughts as 
best I can recall*):


   1. *Shiny new drive-side crankset goes on the spindle. **Crank down the 
   bolt. Done. Terrific! That was easy!*
   2. *Inspect by brilliant handy work. **Oh wait, why the heck isn't this 
   thing spinning? Crap--the small chainring is jammed against the 
   chainstay! Better remove the bolt and back it off.*
   3. *Pulling and shimmying for a few minutes.* *This thing's on there 
   good! Better use the crank puller.*
   4. *Crank puller fail.* *Oh crap, it's so tight it just stripped the 
   treads on my new crank! WTF??*
   5. *Went to Google: *"how to remove square-taper crankset"
   6. *Went to Amazon: order placed for pulling tool. **Yeah, this will get 
   it off.*
   7. *Pulling tool arrives. **Pulling tool fail.** F#*k! This #$#%ing 
   thing just ruined my crank!*
   8. *Facepalm. Desperation sets in--t**o the Dremel tool. **I just need 
   to get the damn thing off. Screw saving the crank.*
   9. *After about 20-30 minutes of cutting into my alloy crank, it came 
   off the bike.** I'm NEVER using a square-taper BB again.These things are 
   cursed!*

For the record, I am actually mechanically-inclined and do all of my own 
bike maintenance. But this was a blatant lack of understanding of these BB 
on my part. And despite swearing off square-taper BBs, I am actually 
running one on my Roadeo which I've installed successfully myself on two 
different bikes.

Learning has occurred.

Some nice looking bikes on this thread! The White/Blue like John's seems to 
be a rarity--but it's such a nice combination.

@Paul G: I'm also running the 46x30 VO crankset. I love that 46x30 gearing! 
It's currently paired with a lightweight Ultegra 11-28 cassette but I also 
have an 11-34 if I expect to do some significant climbing.

Also, do I see 15mm of spacers on that headset? Did you replace the fork or 
did it come from RBW like that? Mine only has 10mm of spacers.

Unfortunately, I can't help with fendering the Roadeo. I only put fenders 
on my Black Mountain Monstercross which has loads of clearance over my 38 
Barlow Pass's.

So I own both a Roadeo and a BMC Monstercross amongst others. Road racing 
is not something I've ever done nor will ever do, so my comments below do 
not apply to that category.

That said, the BMC Monstercross is actually a pretty road bike as well. 
Even Bill rated it a 5 as a road *racing* bike. Take the word "racing" out 
of the equation and I'd rate it higher.

Before I got the Roadeo, the Monstercross was my primary "endurance" road 
bike running 38mm Barlow Pass tires. I had a couple calls with Mike V. 
trying to choose between a Road and a MC and have no regrets with my 
choice. When I want to enjoy the rougher stuff, I swap out my wheelset for 
one with 43mm Gravelking SKs. Brilliant!  And the Roadeo is a damn fine 
road bike--no quarrels there.

Bottom line, I concur with Bill's ratings based on my experience.

I suspect you'll need a wider BB than the 107 that came with your Sam. A 
while back I tried to install a VO 46/30 on my Sam it the 107 and didn't 
work. Had I fully tighten the crank arm the 30t ring would've been touching 
the chainstay.

I think VO specs a BB with a 118 width for their crankset which set up well 
and worked great. Not too wide on the Q--though now the crankset is on my 
Roadeo.

I've no specific knowledge of either frame as I don't do that kind of 
riding. 

A better question might be where does a gap exist in your stable of bikes? 
(if you have 7 Riv's you may not have much/any gap). You cite the Hunq for 
the heavy loaded stuff and that you'll go load-free with no extreme riding 
on the Gus/Susie. That right there would steer me towards the lighter Susie.

Perhaps the best question is what do you prefer: threaded or threadless? 
There are pros & cons of each. Do you already have a bunch of stems of one 
type, that might inform your decision as well as it would allow you to 
better dial in fit. Despite his prickly reply, I do agree with Steve that 
the minuscule weight difference of the headset doesn't matter.

Bill L. gets the "virtual" commission on my sale as I wasn't even thinking 
about ordering anything until his post pointed me to Grant's Blahg and 
their need for cash flow. Just placed an order with RBW for a mish-mash of 
stuff I needed to restock my bike supplies cabinet. Tubes, cables, several 
rolls of Newbaums, etc. Oh and I've been meaning to buy a bell forever but 
always forget to--so I picked up a copper Crane bell.

I want some 1" headset spacers but they don't seem to sell them online. 
I'll give RBW a ring in a bit and see if they can add them in.

Agree with the others--fitting a 38 will largely be dependent on 1) the 
brake clearance and 2) actual size of the mounted tire.

Realistically, there isn't THAT much difference between a 35 and a 38 and 
if you need more tire than that, you're probably at or exceeding the limits 
of what the frame should be doing.

My wife has 35 Compass Bon Jon's on her Roadini--they do it all, road & 
occasional gravel.

Well, first I would steer clear of any event which includes the word "race" 
in the title. 

For these organized gravel rides, part of it is the result of what RBW and 
BQ have been promoting for years--wider tires, offroad terrain. 10 years 
ago, "gravelbiking" it hardly existed, 5 years ago it was niche, now it's 
pretty much mainstream as indicated by all the gravel/cyclo bikes that Trek 
et al sell. So yes, it's attracting more of the "A-type" personalities as 
you describe.

My remedy: know what I want to achieve out of it.

Like you, I like to do my share of "pay to play" events, some road, some 
mixed terrain. Ultimately, I do it to be around other bike people, to 
challenge myself, and for a bit of the excitement & fanfare that comes with 
rest stops, finish line parties, etc. During the ride I also need to 
periodically remind myself to "ride my ride" and not try to keep up with 
younger 20 & 30-something go-fasts.

Are you getting old? Most definitely. Cranky? Can't say and it probably 
doesn't matter.

Know what you hope to achieve from these rides, manage your own 
expectations, and most importantly, ride your own ride to maximize your 
enjoyment & experience. Screw what anyone else thinks!

This is where I find myself scratching my head. I don't work in the bike 
industry, but I do work in product and have marketing experience. I have 
long struggled to see how RBW segments their product lineup. To make sense 
of it, this is how I segment their lineup in my own mind:

This only accounts for what they currently have on their frames page. It 
excludes recent bikes like the Appaloosa, Hunqapillar & GBW (all are burly, 
wide-tired, offroad touring frame and would be with the Atlantis on this 
chart). 

In the way I do the segmentation, a gap exists in lower priced mixed 
terrain box. This used to be held by the Sam Hillborne before the AHH and 
Atlantis went MIT, but now the Sam is at the same price point as the AHH. 
So maybe the Gallop will fill this need? We'll see. Grant's no dummy and I 
have to think they have a segmentation strategy--I just am not seeing it. 
And with so many products that have a lifespan of just a couple years, it 
seems (as Fullylugged suggests) that they have bikes which are "more 
obscure that only the true faithful will find desirable." 

I don't have any familiarity with product development costs in the bike 
industry, but have to think there are significant expenses w/r/t 
prototyping and setting up production. It seems they do it way more often 
than is necessary. I'd really like to see RBW hang on another 25 years--but 
given their recent financial struggles, maybe they should focus on the core 
products for awhile and move away from the niche ones.

Ah, interesting. So on leather saddles it looks like it limits the 
stretching so it last longer. 

I don't know that there is much stretching to prevent on the Cambium 
saddles, but if enhances the ride I guess it makes sense. I wonder if it 
would help prevent the cracking that some Cambiums get?

Just had a good thought--since Mark built the bike up with Mark's Bars, I 
should check Mark's Staff Bikes page on Riv. Plenty of examples on his page 
with Mark's bars setup.

By my crude measure of holding a piece of paper against my screen parallel 
with the drops, it seems he generally angles them such that the drops point 
at the rear axle.

35 miles out in the country on the Roadeo today and man, I like this bike 
more & more. So smooth and comfortable. I topped out at 45mph on one 
downhill. And I rode a dirt section of nearby Sam's Creek Road on it with 
no trouble--something I'd never have attempted on my RB-1 with 25mm rubber.

I'm starting to like the Nitto M178 Mark's bar. But how do others set up 
the angle of these? I've always ridden drops where the top section of the 
bars run parallel to the ground--like Noodles. I originally set the Mark's 
Bar up with the top parallel to the ground. But the levers feel oddly 
placed that way. So it appears I am to rotate the bars downward. But how 
much? Is there a "Standard" or is it a personal preference thing? There is 
surprisingly little on the 'net about these handlebars.

TT. 

Would they include centerpull brake mounts for 700c road wheels and canti's 
for 650b offroad wheels on the same bike? Has anyone ever done that?

posted the link to the Seattle CL add--else I never would have seen it. 
Also, a nod to Bill Lindsay and his recent Roadeo acquisition which was 
most educational and inspired my build and the format of this post.

*Condition:* The original owner bought it from RBW in 2014--and judging by 
it, it has *maybe* a couple hundred miles on it. No dents, only a couple 
minor scuffs, else this bike is pristine. I've never bought a full bike 
from Riv, but this one was built up by Mark (there was a piece of paper 
saying so). Seeing how he built things--cable lengths and routing, bar 
tape, the component installs was a surprise bonus for me--excellent 
craftsmanship.

*First Impressions on a short shakedown ride:* I've read about the ride 
quality, the responsiveness, etc. from many on this forum and it's what I 
was going after. Not disappointed! I found the Roadeo to be extremely 
smooth, very responsive but not the least bit twitchy, and it climbed well 
without a propensity to pop wheelies. 

There's one fast downhill with a bend at the bottom that I've taken dozens 
of times with the other bikes I've owned. Taking it at speed, some bikes 
(my Sam & BMC Monster Cross) drift a bit outside, whereas my RB-1 can turn 
on a dime but is a little to twitchy & uncontrollable to keep me confident 
so I often tap the brakes. The Roadeo easily held my line with confidence.

*The Details:*


   - Frameset: 63cm Roadeo, threaded fork, FSA Headset
   - Drivetrain: VO 46/30 & BB, Shimano XTR SPD pedals, 105 10-speed RD, 
   Ultegra FD
   - Cockpit: Brooks C15 Carved, Ritchey Seatpost, 46cm Nitto Mark's Bar, 
   Tallux 110mm stem, Ultegra Brifters
   - Wheelset: Compass/RH BJP EL, H+Son Archetype, Ultegra Hubs


I'm still tweaking some things and once I lock in a stem, bars, and 
shifters, I have two rolls of red Newbaums ready to wrap (the only thing 
NEW going on this bike).

so I don't think you'll gain anything in tire width or more cush.

Unless it's just that you want to tinker and see if it works for the fun of

That improvement you taste has less to do with hand grinding than it does 
1) the consistency of the grind that comes from Burr grinding (Lido) vs. 
Blade grinding (Krups) and 2) the lack of heat generated by your Lido as 
compared to your high-speed Krups blade which can affect the taste.

A decent automatic burr grinder will produce a grind comparable to your 
Lido with way less effort but way more noise. The downside is that it will 
eat into your bike funds because they ain't cheap!

It’s the Leo’s stack height that did it for me. I’m on a 62cm frame with a 
stack height of 636mm + 50mm of spacers + a VO tall stack stem. I’m at the top 
of my uncut 350mm steerer tube and my bars are still not quite level with my 
saddle.

There aren’t too many XL frames out there that get the stack height up. I still 
think that XL frames with a 6 degree sloping TT look gangly, but I’m going 
function over form here. At least it seems like things are trending in steeper 
TT and higher stacks (and wider tires) as an industry—good stuff!

^THIS^ is great stuff and is the answer to my "nuanced" questions I asked a 
couple posts ago. I'm not fast my most standards, but sometimes like to 
ride fast without being in a hurry (because as Jan H. says "Riding fast is 
fun"). Occasionally, I just want to push it and want the bike to to respond 
in kind.

I pulled the trigger on a prebuy for a 61cm Orange Leo last week--feeling 
good about it. The "kit" doesn't factor in as I've never had/worn one. But 
then I generally don't like clothes with words on them. 

And I like that you call it "Leo" Bill, and not "Roadini." If you don't 
mind, I might adopt that nomenclature (as I just did above, see that?)

[RBW] Testing and Learning with Sam Hillborne...unexpected results

I swapped the Cazaderos and Albastaches on my Sam and put it back into 
stripped down pavement mode, with Compass Bon Jon’s and drop bars, largely 
for the purpose testing a quill stem adapter + threadless stem for possible 
use on a new 61cm Roadini (it’s orange!!) where I’ll be transferring 
components from an existing bike.

 

I planned on doing about a 25 mile ride this morning, and ended up doing 
42. Lots of scenery, mixed surfaces and hills. A ride of farms, forests, 
small towns, and public parks; and of industry. One of the highlights of my 
longer ride was actually riding by the Lehigh Cement plant in Union Bridge, 
MD. It’s a massive tower which I presume processes mined stone into a 
useful form for cement & concrete and is fed via a conveyor from a nearby 
quarry. But more than the sight of it was the sound which could be heard 
almost a mile away. Almost a smooth, soothing hum that signified everything 
was working as it should. A sound you want to hear from a production 
operation. If you’ve ever spent time in a factory or a printer, you’ll know 
what I mean. If you hear variable loud, erratic, sounds, you know something 
isn’t right. You want that hum.

 

Most might think a concrete plant is an unsightly thing, and admittedly, I 
wouldn’t want this view & sound from my back yard. But to me, it’s also a 
thing of beauty, and an achievement of mankind that has enabled the 
construction of skyscrapers, bridges, road infrastructure, airport runways, 
and made so much possible. People built that. 

 

It reminded me when I stayed at a family member’s house for a week in a 
small town which was close to an in-town train track. Every morning around 
6am train would wake me—and the sound of the cars rolling across the track 
was soothing, calming even. This, like the concrete plant, communicated 
that economic activity was happening, and that people were at work doing 
what they do. That all is well.

 

On this occasion today, I wouldn’t have experienced it but by bike. And I 
also wouldn’t have seen it if my Sam didn’t inspire me to go further than I 
planned. I thank Rivendell for enabling this experience to happen.

Very nice build--that blue is gorgeous!

This might be one of the most roadish Joe builds I've seen. I've not seen 
many run Barlow's or Drop Bars on them. Goes to show the versatility of 
these frames.

Another option: Rather than keep the 55, you could sell the frame and use 
the proceeds to pick up a second wheelset/cassette/tires and cockpit with 
the Bullmoose + Brake levers to give you your offroad rig. You'd just need 
to rewrap your drop bars so the shift cable isn't under the wrap so you can 
easily move the barends between bars. Once you have it set up, it's 10 
minutes to swap wheels/cockpit.

Similar story with my 62cm Sam. Noodles on a 90mm stem left me feeling 
stretched out no matter the bar height.  Then I picked up an 80mm stem and 
an Albastache bar and it was glorious! I have it set up as my offroad trail 
bike with 42mm knobbies.

That's a beaut! Like the copper highlights--they complement the black 
really nicely. So the 11-speed 105 RD takes a 9-speed cassette + bar ends 
just fine? I never would've thought to try that combo.

And nice camera work with the wide-open aperture to blur the fore & 
background.

Hi Bill,

I read your above thread and your initial ride report. I saw that you found 
the Roadini to be fast and stable. I am curious how it compares to your BMC 
in more specific ways which I attribute to "Sportiness" if you have found 
any to be discernible. 

With stouter tubing, is the Roadini less flexible than the BMC?
Does either the BMC or Roadini spin up/accelerate faster (neither are 
racing bikes, nor do I intend to race)
Which one has quicker steering?
All things being equal, is one more "fun" to ride (might be hard given they 
are set up differently)

I ask because I ride a large frame, I'm mid-40's and want a tall stack, and 
I want a sporty, lively ride. I'm considering a Road+ vs a Roadini. 
Currently, I ride a Soma ES but the stack isn't quite high enough. And I 
have a strong desire for an orange bike--the orange Roadini is really 
appealing.

Dave, don't know if you have an aversion to disc brakes, but the 
forthcoming BMC Road+ (disc) has a higher stack height than the rim brake 
BMC Road. Geometry below, and according to the sizing chart based on PBH, 
you'd probably be on a 56cm frame. I still think the Roadini will be easier 
to get the bars up with a higher stack + quill stem, but it might be worth 
a call to Mike at BMC to pick his brain.

Good point about doctors knowing so much that isn't true! How many times 
does the medical guidance flip-flop on coffee? (and I love my coffee!)

My doctor did admit there was little research available on the health 
benefits of coconut oil, despite his hesitations. It's one 
easily-replaceable food to let go of. He didn't try to get me off the low 
carb eating--how could he, all my other numbers were up!

I will continue with my low-carb eating ways. It just works for me on so 
many levels.

[RBW] Eat Bacon Don't Jog and Coconut Oil

So I've been doing the low-carb Eat Bacon Don't Jog thing since the 
beginning of the year. Over the past several months I've experimented found 
some good, low carb eats. A few of my go-to's:

   - Frittatas with ham, sausage, bacon and/or veggies
   - Fake pancakes (from EBDJ)
   - Coconut "cereal" with greek yogurt and macadamia nuts (also EBDJ)
   - Almonds
   - Bacon!
   - Eggs of all kinds
   - Salmon with avacado, fresh chunky salsa, pepper, cheese and a 
   hard-boiled egg as a brown-bag lunch at work
   - 85%-90% Dark Chocolate as a dessert treat
   - And others...
   
I've also been doing a large glob of coconut oil + heavy cream in my 
morning coffee for breakfast. (I've gotten to prefer it that way). Based on 
EBDJ chapter, it looked like it had many benefits--and I had also done some 
research that it can increase LDL (bad cholesterol).  But it would also 
keep me going until lunch pretty consistently.

The results?

   - Eating significantly less processed foods
   - I've lost about 13 lbs. 
   - I don't get hunger pangs/cravings, etc. and can easily turn away 
   snacks.
   
However, just back from the doctor yesterday with results of my annual 
blood panel. My LDL (normally very low) had risen just over the "high" 
level of 126 and my total cholesterol had risen as well. Had a conversation 
with my doctor about it and he convinced me to abandon the coconut oil. I'm 
now trying a pat of butter + cream in my coffee as breakfast now.

All that said, my other markers were all improved and my blood glucose 
decreased a good bit (blood glucose + weight loss was my main reason for 
starting all this). I will continue my low-carb ways minus the coconut oil 
and continue to research ways to get the LDL number down.

Curious what others do on this diet, what they've learned, and what their 
results have been. Please share!

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Quill Stem 70mm 26.0

Hoping someone here has one in a box/drawer, etc. 

I'm looking for a Nitto Quill Stem, 70mm with a 26.0 clamp. With a 
mid-length insert. Preferably not a 225mm length Technomic/Tallux. But not 
something as short as a Pearl.

A Technomic Deluxe with a 190mm length would work. 

It's going on my wife's 50cm Roadini which has a short headtube that limits 
how low the Technomic can go (which is what's in there now).

I'll echo the approvals. And I'm struggling to remember if I've ever seen 
that beautiful green on a Ram frame--it's quite the looker! It looks 
lighter than the Hunq green.

Looks like a narrow-range cassette on it. 36-50t large cog, wide-range 
cassettes are so ubiquitous on Rivs these days (aka Turkey Vulture Gearing) 
that it looks so small to me. But hey, if it works then you're golden. 

I'm guessing it's a 62cm frame--I'll be happy to take it off your hands if 
you get bored with it. But then we all know that's not gonna happen!

Nice! Go to an auto parts store and get some glossy spray can clear coat. 
It'll look better and protect it as well.

Also, it might be over complicating it, but narrow black stripes edging the 
cream panel might dress it up nicely.

I found it to be a colossal PITA to friction shift on a 10-speed cassette. 
It's such a narrow distance from cog-to-cog that I was constantly 
fine-tuning my shifts. Swapped for a 9-speed cassette (and no other 
hardware changes) and I was back to shifting in smooth mode blissfully.

Or, index the barend for 10-speed (which I didn't want to do).

from a 200 yard test trip down the road: "It’s really smooth and not twitchy. 
And I sit more upright…I think I like that."

Terrific write up, Bill--thanks for sharing!

I've casually toyed with the idea of doing a 200k brevet (I've never done 
one) but have it built in my mind as this grueling 
against-all-odds-it's-me-versus-everything experience. But yours picks up 
on the scenery and photos and the experience and enjoyment of the ride 
(despite obvious setbacks with a flat and a loose fender). Not awful, 
challenging yes, brutal at times, but not horrible. I just may yet do it. 

There's a 100-miler coming up with my riding club later this month which, 
if I do it, I may have to put my Sam back in Road Mode for it.

@John--on occasion, I ride out 75 to McKinstry's Mill only to take a left 
on Sam's Creek. I've never gone down Pearre Road but that's quite scenic 
where you staged your QB--new route for me to explore!

[RBW] Ride Report: Sam Hillborne gravel (under)biking?

 When does it become underbiking?

I did my first, full-fledged gravel ride on my Sam Hillborne v2.0, Gravel 
Mode.  

Weather was 50-60 degrees, sunny, perfect. I road up the mountain north of 
Frederick MD (locals will know it as the Mountaindale right fork up 
Gambrill Park Rd). I won’t describe it extensively as others on the web 
have already done that including James from Analong (formerly Gravel &

My 36t cog saw a lot of action for the first time today! Combined with a 
30t chainring up front, gearing didn’t leave me yearning for just one more 
gear during my unloaded ascent up 1100’ of dirt road that is in need of 
some attention following winter. Potholes filled with muddy water, large 
rocks exposed through runoff, and some recently downed trees & branches 
made it interesting. At the top, a plateau along the ridge was waiting for 
me. Short trees, no signs of humans, no sounds of birds, and not a speck of 
green from Spring at that elevation. Desolate. Even a little eerie, like 
the scene at the start of Planet of the Apes where Charlton Heston is 
wandering, looking for signs of life.

The descent was the reward, the pinnacle of today’s ride. Half because of 
the reprieve from 1100’ of continual climbing, half because of the thrill 
of picking a line and heavy braking, half because of the sound and sight of 
the rapids flowing parallel to the road. As Jerry Seinfeld said “How can 
you go wrong?" Totally worth the effort.

I don’t know if I was underbiking or just biking, but my Sam proved worthy 
of the challenge despite the only other bikes up there being suspension MTB 
bikes. My newly-wrapped green Albastache bars worked brilliantly helping to 
dodge & weave to keep to the smoothest line possible. My hands never 
cramped, never went numb as I shifted hand-position often like I do on 
drops. My 2x9 with a 30x36 low gear got the job done and should be adequate 
for most anything I encounter in the Mid-Atlantic. The 42mm Cazaderos, 
sluggish on the pavement, took everything I threw at them on the gravel as 
if to say “That all you got?" Maybe a heavier frame and a wider tire and 
different geometry would've made things a bit easier, but I didn't feel 
limited in any way on my Sam. I am newly impressed at all that this bike 
can do.

Ultimately, I had a peaceful, enjoyable spring day of exploring places I’d 
never gone. And I was able to avoid my 45-year-old body accidentally coming 
in sudden contact with 2 billion-year-old stone. 

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Beautiful bike! I've always like the green on the Hunq. I also have a Tubus 
Tara on my Sam--I wish the Riv forks had mounts in the right place to fit 
it without an adapter.

One build question--what is that bottle mount for on the downtube? Never 
seen anything like it.

And I see a ton of bikes in the background! Wish I had that kind of 
space...actually, it's probably better that I don't.

Is it me, or does this frame seem too small for this setup? I wonder if Riv 
tried to talk this customer into a larger-framed AHH? 

It's just not a typical setup that comes out of Riv--bars below saddle, 
lots of seatpost showing, bars maxed out. Maybe they are just inserted at 
the extremes for the photoshoot. Maybe the customer just REALLY wanted a 
Roadeo (and who wouldn't?). 

That said, I'd love to drop the saddle to 82cm and test ride this beauty!

@Patrick, the blue was a stock color up to 2016 (I have the same color). 
It's nice but if the 2017 Sage green been an option, I'd have gone that 
route.
