Re: [RBW] Gofast f/f: 6.0 lb even!
Hey All, That is impressive. With no emphasis on weight I ordered a road bike frameset from Soulcraft. With the supplied full carbon fork it weighs less than the six pound mark. But with the also supplied Soulcraft unicrown road fork it is over six pounds. Chiming in from Redding, Ca. [RBW] Re: Kogswell P vs. Rambouillet
Hey All, I owned a second gen Model P and also a Romulus. I found the Romulus to be over tubed. There must also be some differences in the tubeset because the Rom felt mushy when pushed hard compared to the Model P and other similar steel road frames I have owned. The Model P was a kick in the pants to ride unloaded and kept it's composure when lightly loaded or pushed hard. The geometry between them was at least real close...that I remember from reading the charts way back then. The lugs are unique and from Matt Grimm from his 'lugged' days. Re: [RBW] Re: Very clever video
Hey All, I liken this to throwing water balloons into a crowd. In all likelihood nothing bad will happen. But it's possible...so do you throw the water balloon? For me the video elicited a moderate PTSD experience. Fear, angst, and something akin to real pain with each shot. So I went and poured a cup of coffee a BOB sent me recently in exchange for a bike part. Good coffee, time to think it thru...and I sat back down to post. I just don't see any humor in senseless violence, or in violence more generally. I just don't. But I do make an allowance for Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. To each their own. [RBW] Re: Advice and suggestions for custom dirt/pavement allrounder?
Hey All, In Re Soulcraft, all I can say is that the results for me have been tremendous. I can't say better than the alternatives because once you have made a choice you no longer get to choose..so each choice precludes the other choices and the outcomes associated with those choices. If GP had on offer the Rodeo back then I may have chosen one of them. I wish he had because I bet a Rodeo would be a winner for me. He didn't, and I was an owner of a Rom, so I was aware of the possibilities. I looked around for someone who would build a proper road machine out of steel. Sean (sp?) was right there so I started the process. I found him to be very open. I did ask about the tubing and got the answer he now puts on his website. Regarding geometry we talked for a long time and he finally said 'what would you do?'. I said 'square 55s and parallel 73s.' To which he said something suggesting that he was hearing me. That talk ended but he called back about a week later. He said those numbers will give you a lot of toe overlap. No kidding I said. What would you do? I said slack the head angle. He himmed and hawed and asked if he could find a different answer. Right there is where I let go. Long and wonderful story cut shortI have never in my life better enjoyed any bicycle as I have enjoyed my Royale. The Rom is a fat pig in comparison (not a fair comparison). It ain't better, it's just freakin wonderful. I wish it was more compliant. but I love the way it accelerates. And it goes down hill like it is on the rails, but the rails of your choosing. Change your line in a corner and the bike does not get upset. I never found it's limit, it found mine. Life is short. Two wheel drifts down Diablo on misty mornings? Okie dokie. I know there is more going on than the framesetbut Sean did his part, and in the end it was his frame design, not mine. I'd get a Dirt Bomb in a heart beatiffin I had the dough. [RBW] Re: Single Speed Conversion Help
Hey Matt, Maybe a best option is making it a five speed with some cheap bars and a cheap thumby. Yank the extra CRs and the FD. This allows the use of a chainguard too - which can be nice in some cases. I have built a bunch of bikes like this for my extended family members who were heading off to college. The only exception was for one of my nephews I built the right bike into a single speed at his insistence. I add that last part because it didn't matter to my nephew what anybody else thought. He wanted a SS and that was that. But definitely yank anything of value. More than few of the bikes I have built were lost to theft in college towns. And when they are gone they never resurface, IME. Well no Riv here either. But lots of Riv-like stuff has become a huge influence in my wife's cycling life. If we had more money I would build a custom mixte from Riv. It's not always about utility though. Sometimes it's about softening up the ride while actually carrying useful stuff - like lunch, or groceries. Throw away the HR monitor. Slow down when you want to. Go faster when you want to. Have fun. Oh look, something pretty! Those are the things that helped turn my wife from a very solid roadie into an MTBing, bicycle commuting, bicycle lifestyle wonderwoman. She has four bikes. The only one not ridden is the road bike. But looks aside a long wheelbase do-it-all is actually an excellent choice for a lot of people. I ride one from back in the day and they are super versatle. Iffin I had the money I would endeavor to own an Appaloosa. [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for winter riding knee/leg warmth/protection?
Howdy, Knickers. Even if you have to buy something custom/tailored. My wife makes ours from thrift store wool slacks, but they are so good that I would pay to have that done for me. My favorite set for the 25-45 (for us in Redding, Ca. that's about as cold as it gets) degrees F days started as heavy wool slacks from the Salvation Army store, cost $3(ish). Triple layered wool at the knees, double up the thighs, and single layered in the back. She uses what she cuts off the lower leg for the extra layers and tapers the entire leg all the way to the hip. So if you have the budget, go spend two hundred on exactly what you want. I don't normally recommend spending money on 'fancy' stuff but I can in this instance. They were a real game changer for me. I go out in anything here and I am OK (on the bottom) half. I have never had that before. My previous best setup was a pair of Black Bottoms' (Snow Canyon?) heaviest tights. But they pail in comparison in every way, so they never get used any more. Here is a FB link to one of my wife's early efforts. She did this several times for herself, and then made a pair for me. Mine are awesome. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.299267100113195.72081.10897236423type=1l=21977caaf2 Happy 4th and Smooth Tracks, Chris Redding, Ca. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Best chain lube - ever
Hey Patrick, My home gets over 60 inches of rain a year. Some places I ride (Brandy Creek watershed at Whiskeytown) get well over 100 inches per year. The driest parts get well into the 30s, with the town getting about 45. But the Summers are long, hot, and dry. I use a plastic bath and rub type cleaner with kerosene or diesel to clean the chains, but not very often. Mostly I just wipe them off and add more lube. I hope it works as well for you as it does for us! Chris On Tuesday, April 15, 2014 7:09:41 AM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: Great to hear, Chris! Redding, CA isn't particularly known as a wet area, correct? Presuming it's mostly dry, dusty riding where you are and since you love the bar oil, that goes against the conventional wisdom (which is so often wrong), that sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet conundrum
Hey All, I sold my Rom (frameset). It just wasn't the bike for me. I decided it was over tubed. It was close, but not close enough. Everything is a compromise. My 81 Miyata 610 converted to 700c (with 35mm Kendas) and standard reach brakes rides like a dreamright up until you push it hard and then it shows why it is otherwise so dang smooth. I will be keeping the Miyata nonetheless. I do miss seeing the Rom hanging in the garagebut that is not a good enough reason to keep a bike. No point in lamenting this, or most stuff, for that matter. I say move on and don't look back. It's just a bike. Re: [RBW] Re: Beauty Shots of the Custom are up!
Hey All, Great bike. Great effort. How about we call that a prototype. My favorite all-in-one-bike is my 85 stumpy sport. This is my second. The first I bought new and it lasted about 23 years. Long chain stays, relaxed angles, and carefully crafted cockpits make for great workhorse bikes. If RBW made that bike and I was feeling flush I would buy it. Hey All, First, I am happy to see that suspension gets the appreciation here that it deserves.
