My advice: put it at the safe height and ride it for a month. If you don’t get
used to it, well your month wasn’t perfect, but a month is a short time in
life, I hope! Then you will really know you need a taller one!
Good luck!

[RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread Edwin W
Jeff,

I would add one under-studied disadvantage of wearing a helmet:
You are more likely to hit your head on things when you have a helmet on
than when you do not have one on. I have not seen this scientifically
studied (yet!), but I have experienced it myself. Your body is so well
trained to know where your head is and to avoid that thing hitting
something. Add 1-2" of plastic and foam around it and your subconscious
judgment is off. I remember hiking in a cave. I kept knocking my head into
things when wearing a hat. I took the hat off and I didn't hit it again.
Now, how many cracked helmets are due to this effect, I cannot say, but I
will bet more that one.
*This is NOT a reason to not wear a helmet if you are inclined to do so,
but one small disadvantage of wearing one.
I am more likely to wear a helmet when the risk is higher (in a criterium),
and less likely to wear it when the risk is lower (toodling in the
Netherlands) while biking, but walking or driving... no matter how risky
the situation is (driving in a snowstorm on unplowed roads, for example, or
walking right next to a busy street), I will not wear a helmet, and
(almost) nobody has ever suggested it.

Re: [RBW] To Helmet or not

2019-03-30 Thread Edwin W
Here are my FAQs about my helmet use that I share with friends and family to
prove I am the bike obsessed person in their life:

Do you ever wear a helmet?
Sure, I wear a helmet sometimes. I am more likely to wear a helmet if it is
cold, dark, rainy, or all of the above. Also, I am more likely to wear a helmet
if I am going fast, like for exercise. I am also more likely to wear a helmet
if I am going for a very long ride, like a tour, where I will be riding on
roads with trucks going fast.
Do you ever not wear a helmet?
Sure, I often don’t wear a helmet. I am less likely to wear a helmet if I am
riding at a casual speed, on an upright bicycle and on streets with slow
traffic.
Do you make your kids wear a helmet?
Yes, it is the law here in Tennessee.
Isn’t that a double standard?
Not really…. We both follow the laws. Also, I have a lot more experience. I
have been riding bikes for 40 years and have ridden more than 10,000 miles in
the last few years alone.
Wouldn’t a helmet make you safer in a wreck?
Probably. I liken it to driving and walking for transportation. It is fairly
safe, but crashes do happen. If you were in a crash, a helmet would probably
help. I know a family that hit a deer while driving, and the antlers pierced
the skull of one of the passengers. A helmet would have prevented that, but
nobody I know would recommend that the passenger wear a helmet in the future,
or not get in a car again.
But aren’t you safer in a car, surrounded by 5000 pounds of steel and with a
seatbelt and airbags?
Yes, and still 40,000 people die every year due to cars. Just in the US! Also,
about 280,000 people have traumatic brain injuries due to motor vehicle crashes
each year in the US. I am sure many would have been prevented by a helmet.
But isn’t walking safer since you are on a sidewalk?
Still, 4,000 people die while walking every year in the US, many of them on the
sidewalk, where cars occasionally crash.
Would you recommend that motorcycle riders wear a helmet?
Yes, study after study connects increased helmet use with a decrease in death
rate among motorcycle riders.
Aren’t there studies that connect increased bike helmet use with decreased
deaths?
Surprisingly, no. There are studies that show that many people who have been
injured in a bike crash were not wearing helmets, but that is not the same. The
safest places for biking are where people rarely wear helmets.
Why are bike racers required to wear helmets?
The same reason that car racers are required to wear helmets: they go much
faster than you and I do and they travel in a very tight pack. If you bike like
a bike racer, you might want to consider a helmet.
My Questions for You:
Would wearing a helmet while driving make you safer, less safe, or about the
same?
Most people I ask admit that it would probably make them safer, but nobody I
know wears a helmet for driving, even when driving at night, in the mountains,
in the rain or in the snow. Or driving fast surrounded by big trucks. Nobody I
know has even considered it! And I think that is fine.
Would wearing a helmet while walking make you safer, less safe, or about the
same?
Most people I ask say “about the same.” Because of this, nobody I know has ever
considered wearing a helmet when walking.
I think wearing a helmet when driving or walking (and biking around town) would
make you safer, but it is not SO dangerous, and a helmet would not make you SO
much safer that I would recommend wearing one all the time. I don’t know why
people so consistently single out biking as a particularly dangerous activity
that requires helmet use.
Also, “unintentional injury” is the leading cause of death in people ages 1-44.
Unintentional motor vehicle incident is the leading or 2nd leading cause of
these injuries in people over 1 year old. Shouldn’t we be talking more about
how to decrease these deaths and injuries rather than focusing so much on
biking without a helmet? Remember, biking is very safe, and is good for your
city. If you want to improve health, safety, or your town, ride a bike! With or
without a helmet!

[RBW] Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-21 Thread Edwin W
One more to consider: the Workcycles fr8 V8. I have had all non electric
assists: Yuba mundo, bakfiets and fr8 so can only speak to the bike design. I
think the fr8 is the most bike like and most likely to be ridden without a big
load like 1-3 kids. It is a nice one to have as the kids grow out of riding
with you (though my 12 year old will still catch a ride on it).
But since you are talking long distances and hot weather etc.. an assist makes
sense and so think of the V8 version. German motor (not Bosch but workcyckes
only uses really good parts) and lights, fenders etc. are included. Great add
ons like racks (get a front and rear) and child seat in between you and the
handlebars: the favorite spot for all of my kids and the best handling.
Now, a rest ride for a week makes so much sense and you might not be able to do
that, which is a huge drawback.

Let us know what you get,

[RBW] Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-11 Thread Edwin W
I like pneumatic tires because they are quieter. Some like plastic because they
are lighter. Probably doesn’t make a huge difference, though pneumatics might
last a touch longer.
I always have pushed my kids a bit faster into the next size bike than I
probably should... three kids in I am getting better. Let them lead the way, to
tell you when they want to move up tot he next stage or next size.
CL should have several options for skuut, strider, etc. I would offer $30 cold
cash for a good quality one.
Like others have said, the transition from balance bike to pedal bike is super
easy and smooth.
Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Thoughts: Downsizing the bike stable and dual-purposing bikes

2019-01-29 Thread Edwin W
In my family biking experience, I will expect you to have an easier time
with her up front than in the back. I find that a kid in the back affects
the ride MUCH more than a kid up front. My current family is the stoutest
of stout Workcycles Fr8 and I have the kid saddle mounted on the downtube.
I can put my 12 year old and toodle around with him in front of me. But
when I have a kid on the back, I have to make sure the tires are pumped up
enough and it is much more noticeable.

I know I did not answer your question except to say: keep her up front as
long as you can!

And I like Deacon P's suggestion of putting the seat over there with the
current set up.

Good luck,

[RBW] Riv basket nets hook source?

2018-06-12 Thread Edwin W
I like Rivendell's basket nets.
I remember when they brought them out they specifically commented on the
quality of the hooks. And they are high quality.
I was glad to hear on their Blahg yesterday that a shipment of blue nets is
coming. I will get one.
I think they come with four hooks and you can zip tie the net to your
basket and have a few extra, but for some reason I am down to two and need
a few more.

What I am asking is: has anyone found a source for hooks like that for when
you need more? "Plastic hooks" is an impossible search term.

Thanks,

size, frame size, or other things, they may want a tire as skinny as 26mm

Bob,

I agree. I wouldn’t try on a Sam, but would be pretty sure these would fit on a
Joe without fenders. And maybe even with! I’m cruising with the 44s in a
befendered Joe and they are good. I had Schwalbe Furious Fred’s on there before
and there was a little wiggle room.

Rim width might make a little difference.

What do you find fishy about the ad? Except for their poor understanding of
the difference between "your" and "you're" of course.

Priced high, pictures of several potentially unique aspects of the bike,
and a posted serial number.

What made you think it might be the stolen one? The "powder blue?" I
couldn't tell on my computer monitor with those pictures if there was
anything unique about the color.

[RBW] Re: What does a BMC Monstercross weigh?

Bill,

How did you pick the size, and what are the sizes of your other bikes?

I have looked at those frames before, but after seeing your post I went and
looked at them some more. It really does seem "dumb not to buy one" as you
say! What sensible bikes.

If I had some 2-3 hour mountain bike rides in my future, I sure would want
one of those.

I have not seen (m)any photos of Appaloosas with a drop bar. I wanted to do
something new this spring, and my wallet did not want me to get a new bike,
so I put on some drops.
I had tried this a few years ago with my Sam, and it never felt great, so I
got a shorter stem this time (7cm vs 9cm). Then I put yellow Newbaum's on
with a light coat of clear shellac. Spring time!

One thing I don't love is that I got the absolute tallest V Brakes I could
find when I bought this, and those tall V Brakes need the absolute most
cable pull... and the tektro v brake levers for drop bars bottom out. They
stop the bike, but no room to spare! Any ideas on how to pull more cable
save for getting those pulley add on things? I was thinking of trying
another washer on the inside of the arm to put the tops of the arms a
little further apart. Will that make a difference?

[RBW] Riv request for store credits

2018-02-24 Thread Edwin W
RBW is flawed like any business. Or human run enterprise. Too much time and
energy spent on the wrong stuff (though some love those wind shirt Dickey
things I am sure haha) and not enough time in the core, brand defining and
money making aspects. Sometimes bikes are boring and wind Dickeys are exciting.
I often spend time doing things that don’t gain me money, fame or much else.
And those things that crush he cash flow: inventory, overhead and payroll. Hard
to run much of a business without them.
A consultant could come in and “correct” many of these things, fire half the
staff and remove all mention of wind Dickeys from RBW. But then it wouldn’t be
RBW, would it.

Maybe I should have added one of the last wind Dickeys and a few splats to my
last order.

Hail Mary,

[RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?

2017-04-04 Thread Edwin W
Jim,

That is just like my situation! Here in Nashville there are so many garages
that eclipse my bike collection in value with just one car and nobody
blinks an eye, but mothers/mothers in law types seem to be interested in
how many bikes I have!
I have a bunch of kids bikes and a few in the shed which is not where I am
living now and so never ride, like an old Schwinn tandem, a fix-ified
Raleigh sprite, an old GT Avalanche MTB on loan to a friend, and in our
basement but rarely used is a Dahon Boardwalk single speed guest bike.
All I am really using right now is:

1. appaloosa - ride everywhere, do everything
2. Workcycles Fr8 - go anywhere around town with 1-3 kids.

But I fantasize about a "gofast"(er than the Appaloosa) like an old UJB
with good clearance, or a fancier low trail randonneur bike. I almost never
make it to single track biking, but I also fantasize about having a bike to
do that with, nothing out of this world, but like a 1x10 650b bike with 3"
tires.

After having so many kids bikes in 12", 16", 20", 24", 26" and 700 and
trying them to make them either like my appaloosa or like the racy bikes
they want, I have concluded that going forward the most practical thing for
middle schoolers and up is a "monster cross" type cross bike that can take
45mm tires and drop bars and go anywhere. But that might be another thread:
"how to keep your kids to one bike per kid"!

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-03-28 Thread Edwin W
I've got the Yakima Two Timer on the back
for two bikes - works great with a wide variety of bikes, downtubes,
heights, fenders, tire width, wheel size, etc
I've got the Yakima Raptoraero on the
roof which works with a pretty wide range of bikes, too... also doesn't
mind fenders, no break down of bike needed, etc...

If I need more than three bikes, I have put a folding trailabike and
folding Dahon in the back.

I don't like the feel of driving most cars with four bikes hanging off the
back, but some cars are better than others.

Costs can add up
Put a hitch on your car for $150 at Uhaul (they threw it in with the car)
Rear rack for $300
Put bars on top for $200 or so (came with the car, luckily)
Rack on top $150 (I found one on CL)

[RBW] Re: MUSA pre-order

2017-02-17 Thread Edwin W
I'll bet they've never heard this contrastive crotch color conundrum before.
Someone on the design team thought it was a good idea and it went forward. With
this feedback I bet the next batch won't have that!

And let's hope there is a next batch.

The only "problem" with the MUSA shorts I have (dark blue early style with same
color crotch and grey newer style with blue crotch) is that they last so long.
How can a business hope to sell new stuff when each piece lasts so long?

[RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-12 Thread Edwin W
I like the idea of "if you heard about it from Riv and they sell it, buy it
from them as a courtesy." The (usually small) increase in price is worth
the mountains of advice I have received from them and you all. "Tuition
comes in many forms," as my friend's dad says.

I guess they have to limit how many different models they can stock. I was
impressed by the ones on the complete Appaloosas I saw at RBW HQ, but Riv
doesn't sell those. The NP2, I think.

[RBW] Re: ?Appaloosa versus Sam Hillborne

Having owned both, I would say the major differences are tire width, chain stay
length and brake style. And of course color. I know the Appaloosa is billed
more as a touring bike, but I haven't heard of anyone feeling the Sam to be too
flimsy for touring!

Currently with an Appaloosa for tire width flexibility.

what you are going to do with them?

I like the look of both and can't wait to see your color.

[RBW] Re: Choosing between Sam and Joe

2016-11-28 Thread Edwin W
I think it is all about tire clearance. Want more? Joe Appaloosa. Ok with
40mm (give or take, fenders or not), Sam could be your bike.

And of course color preference - you gotta have a color bike you like!

First Sam, now Appaloosa riding,

What is the thinking on the horizontal rear dropouts? I forgot. I know Riv

[RBW] Re: Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-22 Thread Edwin W
You all have not cleared it up AT ALL, but I got a bunch of ideas to ponder.
Jeremy - I love the bar you mentioned and will look into it. I had
originally tried a dirt drop when I first got the bike, but the quill was
too long for the short head tube. I looked into the Kalloy/Sunlite
versions, but heard they are not good for twisting and turning drop bars
into them. Also, I had never heard of travel agents and educated myself on
those. Would let me use the drop levers I have now. Hmm
Joe and Ryan... you have me all over our local CL, which of course is one
of my favorite activities. What's one more kids bike when you have three
kids and I think my wife could ride the Clem more than she does.
Joe - brifters? Have you gone off of your Rivendell rocker??? I'm kidding
of course... maybe he would dig those, but he has survived on the 1x8 stem
mounted friction shifter so far, I think we could stick with that theme.
Sky - I love the lil' LHT. At our LBS the other day he rode the little flat
bar cross check 1x, which I loved.. mostly because it is quite similar to
his Clem 1x8! He did ride a 46 All City single speed cross bike which was
cool, though out of our price range. What was off with the 520 fit?

Continuing to ponder with one month until Christmas,

Edwin

[RBW] Drop bars for a kid: help me out.

2016-11-21 Thread Edwin W
I got a little Clem for my kids last year when they came out. It is a great
bike. My oldest son has been riding it BUT has just been so enamored by
drop bars on bikes whenever he sees them. He does not QUITE appreciate how
cool his bob-ish setup on the Clem is, no matter how many times the bike
shop staff or I tell him!
Right now we have VO tourist bars
 on
an 80mm stem.
Question - if I want to have him try drop bars should I:

Put some drops on the Clem, with a dirt drop style or shorter stem

or is it too long in the top tube and not practical and not what it was
designed for and:

Get a small used drop bar bike off of CL and let him play around with that?

Thoughts from this smart group??

They are just so durned good looking I am trying to figure out where I

Bill (and anyone else): What are good options for mounting a single one on
a nitto stem?

Once a year or so I will forget a lock or key. I typically ask to take it
inside with that explanation. And then I don't forget for several months!
Here in Nashville, probably like where you are, there is little bike culture
