Re: [RBW] Re: Grip King Ulti-mod!

2010-11-19 Thread Jon Grant
Charlie mused:

I like the mod but I might do a version with a radius instead of a
straight line for the added outside section. Plus I would use a
triangle file and put some notches in it.

---

. . . Which made me think about just using a quill cage from an old pedal.
Undo the GripKing ends, slide the old cage in, re-bolt the GK ends, right?
Then my mind, unfettered by reason, went to this: Why not start with a
conventional quill pedal and add GK-like pieces fore and aft? Make your own
modified GK right in your own home! Zowie!

Re: [RBW] Noodle vs Bullmoose?

2010-12-03 Thread Jon Grant
From: Montclair BobbyB asked:

Is this a genetic thing? You either gravitate to drops or you don't? Or am
I just not giving the drops a fair shake here? I don't want to immediately
rush to judgment and get rid of the Noodles, but it feels like I'm
completely sold on the Bullmoose.

---

For me, it depends on today's ride, on kind of a sliding scale. If the route
is well-paved, I ride a B.17, narrowish (44-cm) drops, and skinny (28 mm)
tires. If it's going to be mostly pavement with the possiblity of occasional
(<50%) gravel or dirt, I ride the B.17, 48-cm Noodle bars, and Hetres. If we
plan mostly dirt with as little pavement as possible, I ride the Champ
Flyer, upright (not straight!) bars, and knobby tires.

But if the Bullmoose fits your every use, why even give it another thought?
OTOH, if they're easily swappable, hang onto the Noodles, and use them as
the occasion moves you. Do what makes you happy, I say.

[RBW] Kid Bikes

2010-12-04 Thread Jon Grant
Oh, me too also. I love the IslaBikes website, and it all makes so much
sense ‹ quality bikes right-sized and equipped for children, not made in
China (matters to me, might not matter to you, don¹t wanna get in a big
thing about it, please). But shipping from the UK would nearly double the
cost of the bikes, which puts it out of range for us, especially considering
we have to buy two every time.

My guess is that the regulatory hurdles of NA distribution of products for
children are too daunting.

I wonder what would happen if we developed a sort of temporary co-op of
sorts to ship us a crate of those puppies? How many of each model would we
have to buy at one time to start saving real money on shipping? Or somesuch.

Rivendell content: I don¹t remember seeing such musing about Riv kids¹
bikes, but it¹s delicious to contemplate.

jon,

thank you so much for liking my bikes! the Super Tourer on my Flickr
page is actually a 23-1/2" (59.69cm), so were it not
for the fact the TT length is STILL the same as on my Competition (22"
or 55.88cm), it would probably be too big for me.

i don't have a photograph of it, but i also have a 1974 Super Tourer
that is a 57 (22-1/2"). it's not as elegantly
kitted as the 59, but it's a terrific commuter. i bought it from the
gentleman who bought it NEW in 1974. he still has the other ST he
purchased
from Raleigh after having gone to Worksop to SEE the prototypes of the
Super Tourer. on this bike i have, he replaced the 27x1.25" tires
with 700c by 38s on Shimano XT and LX hubs. The Huret derailleurs are
still there, though, and they're smooth as butter.
i will try to add a set of photos of this bike soon. What i love
about my Raleighs is
the 531 tubing (frame and fork) and the 22" top tube on all three.
the Competition is 74/74 (angles) and the Supers are 73/73. They are
different
bikes than my Roadeo, but i love them equally.

Re: [RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group: What is the best vehicle for hauling your bike?

2011-01-15 Thread Jon Grant
Make it at least four for the Element. It¹s not sporty in the least. We
bought it because it¹s light for its size, its rugged interior can be
configured variously, and because it can haul bicycles standing up with
wheels on ‹ at least as tall as my 60.5 cm Rivendell custom. We can put
three people and three bikes inside the car if we remove a back seat. It has
only four seats though, so now that we have twins, the bikes ride on a
hitch-mounted rack out back. Ironic, huh?

Also, please note that Honda has announced the end of production for this
model, and probably won¹t support it as long as I plan to keep it ‹ which is
approximately for the rest of my life. Ours has been very reliable ‹ no
repairs outside normal maintenance for 50k miles now.

Well, Jim, that was the initial concern. I have a pick-up that is my
company work truck and have a bed rack in there. So far so good. But
it's when one wants to travel, and you are staying overnight, or you
stop for a bite to eat, or it's really raining. These are pretty
nice bikes that can get crudded up pretty quickly, components aged
quickly and in the case of a Brooks, potentially ruined. As I'm
ending up w/ more time to be able to wander around, I was just looking
for the type of vehicle described here and depending on the generosity
of this group to relay their experiences.

So far that's 3 for the Element. It ain't the sportiest thing out
there to be sure but it does make sense.

Re: [RBW] Re: Another Rivendell... which one?

2011-02-14 Thread Jon Grant
Farm 200 miles away, already enough stuff to carry on frequent trips? No
excuses -- I¹d say that makes a good argument for another bike at the farm.
If the budget allowed another Rivendell, I¹d be likely to choose a
Hunqapillar or a Bombadil, considering the more rural nature of the
location. Regardless of make or model, I¹d be less inclined to get something
too similar to what I already have, unless the two places had nearly
identical terrain and riding conditions.

This was on early mountain bikes and the 130mm hub spacing seemed to

So I'll pile on:
I'm 5'-8", 230 lbs, and "built stout," as we say back home in Oklahoma. I
like 52cm Nitto Dirt Drops (vintage!) on our tandem, but they were too wide
for me on a single. I ride 48cm Noodles on both my regular drop-barred
bikes, and they feel most natural to me. My wife uses 46cm Noodles -- after
rejecting 48s as too wide -- and I find those acceptable. For me, even 44cm
drops feel a bit snug; anything narrower feels downright unpleasant, even on
a right-sized bike.

I like me some wide bars, mm-hm. But 52 cm? That's crazy talk!

2010-01-07 Thread Jon Grant
Eric Norris asked re: Vittoria Randonneur:

Has anybody used these tires? How do they compare to Paselas?

---

I bought some slightly used several years ago to replace Paselas. I never
thought I could tell the difference between two tires until I did that, but
I found the VRs sluggish feeling. Don¹t know whether or not it affected my
actual commute time, but I hated the way they felt ‹ like riding on hot,
uncured asphalt ‹ dead feeling. I sold them to someone else and returned
happily to Paselas.

[RBW] Rivendell Frame Sizing

2010-01-12 Thread Jon Grant
Ron Farnsworth wrote:

I also was very reluctant to buy a frame 4cm bigger than anything else I had
been riding for the previous 20 years. Went from a 57 cm Merlin to a 61cm
Homer and will never look back. I'm now realizing how much a difference
comfort and versatility mean to my cycling future. It was a leap, and
admittedly a different style of riding, but one that I'm glad I made. My
original concern about standover height has long since faded. I don't buy
into everything Riv, but I'd recommend everyone take a closer look at what
they represent.

---

My experience is nearly identical. Convinced I needed a certain minimum
stand-over clearance, I refused to ride any frame larger than 56 cm. I
gradually came to understand that I might be more comfortable on a larger
frame. Still, when I ordered a Rivendell custom (and insisted on a
level-as-possible top tube, purely for aesthetic reasons), Grant called me
and said, ³Now don¹t freak out, but your seat tube is going to be 60.5
centimeters long.² I calmed down a little when he reminded me that part of
the increase is at the bottom of the tube so doesn¹t affect stand-over. I
fretted about that until the first ride. In less than five minutes the bike
felt like it was made for just me. When I have occasion to ride my 56-cm
Trek 760, it¹s light and quick, but I feel, well, pinched. Like I¹m wearing
really nice shoes that are a whole size too small.

[RBW] Re: What would you pay for a used custom?

2010-03-09 Thread Jon Grant
I think I kind of agree with the OP. ³Custom² doesn¹t mean much in the used
market. I think of most custom-made objects as curiosities ‹ priceless to
the person it was made for, and worthless to anyone else -- regardless of
who built it. Oh, sure, if you happened upon a for-sale bike that had been
built special for someone else, and you were close to the same physical
dimensions as the owner, and your intended use, riding style, and component
preferences were nearly identical, and it were your favorite color and in
as-new condition, then you might want to consider comparing it to a new
custom, and paying some substantial fraction of its new price.

But even if all of the above were true, will a 15-year-old Waterford-built
custom Rivendell serve you better than, say, a new Waterford-built Hilsen in
any practical way?

[RBW] What's the right saddle? Really?

2010-03-19 Thread Jon Grant
So, after three days of back and forth, here¹s what I¹m understanding:

1) With bars above saddle height and an upright position, a wider, flat
saddle ‹ perhaps even with springs -- is more likely to please most riders.

2) With bars more-or-less at saddle height, a medium-wide, flattish saddle
is more likely to please most riders. (This is me, and I ride a Brooks B.17
not because I think it¹s pretty ‹ which I do ‹ but because it don¹t make my
ass hurt.)

3) With bars below saddle height, a narrower, ³racier² saddle is more likely
to please most riders.

4) While the above may constitute reasonable beginning guidelines, the best
saddle solution can vary widely from the norm due to individual
circumstances.

5) Some riders find Brooks and similar saddles to be comfortable enough that
they accept higher maintenance and greater weight, while other riders prefer
the modern saddle design of a padded plastic shell for comfort, lower
maintenance, and/or lighter weight.

6) While the Roadeo may be one of the racier stock models yet produced by
Rivendell, we¹ve all still pretty much agreed (some grudgingly) that the
right saddle for that particular bike is whatever best suits the owner.

Well, okay, then. Can we move on to the best handlebars for the Roadeo,
please?

So I took the kiddo out for a 35 mile pull in the trailer today taking
advantage of the not-snow/wind/rain weather. We headed downtown to
play at a park, and stopped off mid-ride at the REI flagship store for
a snack. As I rolled up I immediately noticed an XO-1 out of the vast
sea of bikes that flood the cafe there. One quick glance around, and I
spied a group of three sitting at one of the tables who looked old
enough know better, but young enough to still get in trouble! Walked
up..."which one of you owns the XO?" They took a funny look around at
all the other tables full of cyclists I think wondering why I picked
them to ask. Then (Mr. G) raises his hand, "uh, I do...how did you
know?" Call it an educated guess. The other riders sitting around were
either in full race kit, or skin tight rolled up jeans and sleeve
tatts.

Anyway we had a nice little talk and turns out he and his wife both
purchased XO-1's new but on closeout for $600 each. His wife later
switched to a recumbent and passed the Bstone on to her sister. Mr. G
has been riding his since new. He said so far this year he's clocked
over a thousand miles just on the XO. Nice.

The bike was in great condition, and fairly stock. I love that he
loves it. Bikes with history are good bikes indeed.

Here graciously allowed me to pose for a picture with him and his
bike. Maybe 15 years from now someone will walk up to me and say..hey,
is that your Bombadil? I hope so.

Seth Vidal asked:

Does anyone know why riv stopped making the simpler lug design? The
more ornate lugs like on the AHH and atlantis are beautiful but there
is something nicely understated about the ones on the romulus.

---

IIRC, Grant Petersen generally prefers lugs to be more on the ornate side,
but they increase production costs. E.g., as costs rose, the later Atlantis
and Rambouillet had considerably simpler lugs that the early versions. I
suspect that if some recent bikes have returned to the complex lugs, it¹s
because Grant found the money in the production budget to do what he
prefers. The man fights hard for his vision of the function and the form of
his bikes.

Re: [RBW] MKS Touring Pedal

2010-08-31 Thread Jon Grant
John Bailey is having a lot of trouble with his MKS touring pedals:

Both pedals started having a "clicking" sound. I took them apart and
loosened the adjusting nut 1/4 turn. That seemed to fix the problem. Then
the left pedal seized up. I took it apart, clean off the old grease and
repacked the bearings. There wasn't much grease on the bearings to begin
with. They seem to work now, but I'll know better after today's ride. Is
this normal for these pedals? They feel great and I would hate to give up on
them. I know they're pretty cheap pedals, but I thought they would last a
little longer without the hassles. Any advice would be very appreciated.

---

John,

They are VERY inexpensive pedals, but high-value, I think. I use them on all
our bikes except the off-roaders. I've found a little prep prevents dry
bearings (insufficient factory grease) and clicking (sharp edges at the
spindle shoulder-crankarm interface). Here's my SOP: Before install, remove
dust cap, add generous grease, close dust cap. Wipe away excess grease. Then
generously grease spindle threads and add a greased pedal washer.
Install pedal. Wipe away excess grease. This solves
all problems I've ever had with them, and after a couple hundred miles the
bearings feel as smooth as any.

Everyone agrees on the add'l grease in the bearings. I've encountered
disagreement on the necessity of pedals washers, but in my experience with a
dozen or more pairs, the clicking is a consistent problem, and the pedal
washers are the consistent solution.

Moot point, right? I mean, I thought the Roadeo didn't have the proper

downtube shifter bosses its single fault.

divide my time between a 60.5cm Riv custom and a 59cm Bleriot. (or is it 58?

I read this thread with some amusement. Then yesterday, I fumbled a gray

that was the last evidence I had that it ever existed. It went to live with

Re: [RBW] Re: 71cm AHH Q2

2010-11-09 Thread Jon Grant
David (I think) asked:

> Question 2 then: B-17 Special or B-67 saddle?

---
Disclosures: I¹m 5'-9", 225 lbs. None of my bikes have bars lower than
saddle height, so I can't speak to that condition. Also, I cannot speak
knowledgeably of saddle other than Brooks, except to say that none I've
tried fit my hind end as well ‹ by a large margin.

I use the B.17 Champion Special (275mm x 175mm) on bikes with drop bars
level or slightly higher than the saddle. I use a Champion Flyer Special
(same dimensions as a B.17 + springs) on my full-rigid mountain bike, where
the rough terrain warrants some suspension. I use a Champ Flyer S (242mm x
176mm + springs) on a townie, shared with my wife, with Albatross-ish bars
where my position is more upright. I have a B.68 S (240mm x 205mm) on a
Bakfiets cargo bike with a very upright position, but I would trade it today
for B.67 (260mm x 205mm + springs) ‹ it really needs a wide saddle with
springs.

If I were setting up a road bike with Albatross bars level-ish with the
saddle, I'd probably want a Champ Flyer Special. If I planned to raise the
bars two or more inches, I might move to a B.67.

Almost just what I've been looking for. Appear quite well-constructed from
high-quality materials, and not too padded -- a big deal, at least to me.
But the knuckle holes appear to not line up with the knuckles, making them
look like an affectation meant to bump up the MSRP. Worse, the gratuitous
addition of the expensive leather bag (which undoubtedly is lovingly encased
in another plastic bag, which is protected by a padded custom box --
Russian-doll packaging, I call it) is off-putting. Well-made stuff that
comes in earnestly minimal packaging makes a much better impression on me.

Remove the showy (between the) knuckle holes, keep the fancy leather bag,
and I'd pay $50. for them right now. I'd consider $75, maybe.

RBW content: Every box I've ever received from Rivendell has been the very
model of minimal packaging.

William wrote:

Those MG-1's are pretty slick. Maybe I'll give them a try someday.

A couple of weeks before this thread took up, we bought our first pair of
BMX pedals, then our second.

A friend suggested BMX pedals to improve foot control on my ATB, so I
replaced older Deore rat-trap mountain pedals with the Wellgo B-76. I have
delighted at how well my feet now stay where I put them. My wife rode my
bike and wanted similar pedals for her townie, so I bought Wellgo MG-1's for
her -- bright yellow, of course, to match cable housings, grips, bell, and
decals.

The cast magnesium MG-1 is noticeably lighter in the hand than the machined
aluminum B-76, but I notice no weight difference while riding. Both models
are quite wide, but they live on high-BB bikes ridden by the risk-averse, so
pedal strike is not a practical worry. It's true they're not easily
modified, save the addition or removal of pins -- again, not a real drawback
for me.

We both consider these pedals significant improvements for relatively little
money.

My wife¹s blue Rambouillet is serial # RB0613, and it came to us as a whole

[RBW] Re: Riddle me this.

2010-04-05 Thread Jon Grant
The money we spend and how we choose to spend it. Sheesh.

I have a Joe S./Curt/Joe B. Rivendell custom that was damaged in a
collision. While it was away for repair, I put almost all the parts on a
(Panasonic-built?) Schwinn World Voyageur frame so I could continue riding
to work. It was pretty enough, and rode just fine. One day, without thinking
of all the possible ramifications of my words, I remarked to my wife, ³You
know, that old Schwinn is about 70% as good a ride as the Rivendell.² Oops.
She pulled up short and said, ³Wait. The bike you paid fifty bucks for is
two thirds as good as the bike that cost us more than three grand?² After
she started talking to me again, we had some long and interesting
discussions about nuances of design and craftsmanship and their effect on
function and quality of our lives, both individually and as a society. I
still have the Riv and still catch myself staring at it, marveling at the
details of joinery and paint, and marveling at the ride when astride it. The
Schwinn has gone to a deserving home, with no regrets.

I will say this: I CANNOT understand how some folks spend so much money on
boats and fishing gear. Now that¹s just ridiculous.

I¹m for it. Helmet visor mount. I can see lots more than with a h-bar
mounted one, just by turning my head a bit. Sometimes when I¹m off the bike,
I find myself swiveling my head about to get a better look behind me,
wishing I had a rear-view mirror all the time. I suspect that would

Man, I am so glad to read this thread. I kept thinking it was just

be sold or resold. Nice people don't do stuff like that.

Rather than throwing it away, send it to me. I¹ll reimburse postage by
PayPal, even throw in a couple of extra bucks for packing. I have an old
bike I¹d like to try it on.

Thanks!

Subject: [RBW] Four by Four Array of bikes

So the three Hunqa prototypes at RBWHQ have three different
handlebars:

The 48 has Bullmoose bars
The 54 won't be around until next week or later
The 58 has Noodles
The 62 has Albatross bars

It seems natural to me that they'd build the 54 with a Moustache bar,
and that the bike would be equally right with all 4. That's true of
several Rivendell models. So, my hypothetical is: Imagine that
Rivendell built up a 4x4 array of bikes. In the four columns are four
models of bike (all in your size of course): the Sam Hillborne, the
Bombadil, the Atlantis, and the Hunqapillar. In the four rows are
those four handlebars: Noodle, Moustache, bullmoose and Albatross.
How many bikes would you need to build your stable? And which bikes
would you pick?

I imagine some of you might pick 3 or 4 Atlantis'. Some others might
replace the Hillborne column with a Hilsen column.
