[RBW] more than 15 shots for 2015...

2016-01-11 Thread Meade Anderson
Folks,

Here's a flickr album of some of my better shots from 2015. A few
comments...I didn't seem to capture too many great shots quality wise (all
iPhone) but do have more than a few great memories, and a confession, not
all of these shots are taken on bicycle rides...a few are from paddling
trips, runs, etc. I did a little more paddling in 2015 than in the past
few years and enjoyed my time on the rivers and bay but my cycling mileage
suffered. (Now I did have a few days which included a morning spin in the
piedmont area of Virginia, an afternoon paddle/float & fish, and later a
stop at the rural farm brewery (Lickinghole Brewery) for rehydration, a
snack from the food truck and music...doesn't get much better.) And there
were a few really cool rides that I forgot to take pictures like the day
that my long time pal Steve invited me on a ride around the Short Hill
range to inspect a forest fire. That day had very high winds and the fire
was moving north up both the eastern and western flanks and towards his
property but amazingly despite the winds, all ended well with mostly burned
timber and brush over rocky terrain.

And another confession, there's more than 15 shots...

[RBW] Solstice Ride

2013-12-22 Thread Meade Anderson
Dan, Eric, Greg, Paul and I did a loop through western Goochland and
eastern Fluvanna Counties yesterday with lunch at an old stage stop,
Wilmington and coffee on Elk Island. Record warm temperatures and dry
weather made for a pleasant change from the often cold, damp, etc weather
seen on the solstice...times have changed as we went by a number of closed
country stores and at least two former stage stops before we ran across an
open country store. And that place is one of the poorest excuses for a
country store I know about, unless of course your interest lies with
Richards Wild Irish Rose and its multitude of flavors...

Bottom line, wonderful day, great ride, fun...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/julianmeade/sets/72157638898941363/
And you will see some similarities between Paul's and mine
shots...surprise...

Here's hoping for a few more nice days of riding before the end of the

About a month ago, Paul and I cranked out a wonderful ride thru some of the
most scenic areas on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.
I haven't had time to post the links or the story.I'll let the pictures do
the talking and there is some overlap between our shots (surprise, surprise,
surprise) but they are worth a quick view. Even though I had visited this
area dozens of times over the years we managed to hit many roads I had never
seen except on maps. It turned out to be a perfect fall day.cool, a few
clouds, no rain, changing leaves, etc

Nice ride report.

The local bike club has a weekly "dinner" ride on Wednesday usually which is
pretty much year round barring heavy rain, snow, etc.in which everybody runs
lights, blinkies, etc.and there's a few of us that do our own thing with
evening after work/after dark rides with options stops on the return at
local breweries, etc.

Fun times.

[RBW] Dyno - SP Dynamo Hub

2013-10-12 Thread meade anderson
I see the 650B SP hub and Velocity rim on Rivendell's web site and the
description has me puzzled. "The 650B wheel will "most likely" supply
enough power for headlight and taillight, but not for charging USB items."
Now I'm not an electrical genius but I realize these dyno hubs won't do all
three at the same time but is there any reason you cannot charge USB items
using one of the "adaptors" available during daytime riding?

I was thinking seriously about a SP Dyno hub for my 650B wheeled ride and
part of the reason was to charge USB gadgets on long rides and tours.

Thoughts on this comment.maybe I need to touch base with the folks in Walnut
Creek.

thanks

[RBW] RE: [BOB] 2013 Summer Solstice - Staunton River Battlefield to Red Hill Loop Ride

2013-06-23 Thread meade anderson
Osage Orange Trees - one of my favorites, little seen these days but made
great hedges too.now an Osage Orange is a tree that artisan camping axes
should have their handles made out of.(I have a box of OO in which I keep my
piece of meteorite.protection by the tree of steel)

Well to be honest, the ride was 62.99 miles.I lied about 63.it can be an
area which has lots of emotions/feelings.history, abandonment, nature,
rural, desolation.it's a very different area.the collapse of the furniture
industry and the textile mills and those goods being made over seas has
pretty much crushed the economy with the decline of tobacco.I could go
on.but hopefully it can get better.tourism helps.even bike tourism. ; > }

As for the bike, that's a custom Bilenky, 650b frame, that Stephen built for
me.low trail, lots of clearances, s&s coupled, one of these days I'll finish
the details of the built.I've changed it around several times and now it
sports a set of Jitensha Studio Nitto bars which were supposed to be custom
bent.I picked them up about 10 years ago and never used them on a bike.

I would have loved to cranked until dark and camped another night but it was
the next to last night of the James River Batteau Festival (talk about the
retro grouches of river running) and they were pulling into Cartersville and
I wanted to catch some old time music and have a cold brew at the
landing.another river, another entire drainage basin with its own
history.though more prominent in the books.

[RBW] 2013 Summer Solstice - Staunton River Battlefield to Red Hill Loop Ride

2013-06-23 Thread meade anderson
http://www.flickr.com/photos/julianmeade/sets/72157634266766597/

The ride was a 63 mile loop on the Solstice starting from the Staunton River
Battlefield up the south side of the Staunton/Roanoke River crossing on the
historic Clarkton Bridge then on to Red Hill, Patrick Henry's last home.
Red Hill is well maintained and a beautiful spot for lunch and a nap on the
picnic table in the shade of an ancient oak. Located in the front yard is
the National Champion Osage Orange tree which is amazing in itself and the
fact located adjacent to the house it survived the 1919 fire that destroyed
the original structure. I returned on the north side of the river following
the more rural and gravel roads (and its hard to be more rural than the
southside) most if not all of which are well over 150 years old. The final
crossing of the river was at the Staunton River Battle Rail Bridge which as
the Clarkton Bridge is open only for non-motorized traffic. This area along
the river basin was once thriving and wealthy, now has somewhat of an
abandoned feel.tobacco is waning, the factories located in the towns are for
the most part closed, the small farms don't cut it, and many folks simply
moved away, simply a bygone era.many of the fine older homes which are still
standing and maintained are not visible from the roads.I could have and
should have taken a ton more shots. At times I would ride for a 5 mile
stretch and never see a car or person.and along the gravel roads it was
sometimes 3 plus miles between houses.a great area for cycling but its
definitely BYOB.(bike, beer, breakfast, lunch, etc)

[RBW] Ride Report - The Cicada Ride (Brood 2)...or the Hatton Ferry, Yogaville, and James River Brewery Spin...

2013-06-02 Thread meade anderson
Saturday, Dan, Paul, and I took off from historic Scottsville with a general
route plan in mind, nothing set other than to go down one side of the James
River, cross somewhere and to return to Scottsville and then swing into the
James River Brewery for a quick post ride recovery beverage. We had hardly
gotten started but the constant hum of the Brood 2 of the 17 year cicadas
began and stuck with us all day. The critters were humming, flying around,
and catching rides on the bikes and one even managed to get into Dan's
helmet. We ended up taking the Hatton Ferry, the last non-motorized cable
ferry in the US across the river; I had tried to catch the ferry for years
but low water, high water, not operating, mechanical or whatever and always
thwarted this river crossing. So it was all of our first crossing at this
historic ferry and Paul even knew the ferryman, Craig.great experience and
addition to a bike ride.we crawled up the hill into Buckingham County from
the river bottom and somewhere along the way decided to make Yogaville our
destination. The heat made us feel like we were on a pilgrimage through
India but a picnic pavilion at a country church complete with ceiling fans
made lunch much more pleasurable. The Lotus Shire at Yogaville with its
pastel colors is always an interesting sight in rural Buckingham County and
quite a contrast to the usual local color. We paid our respects and got an
all too brief respite from the heat and sun and then had to hightail it back
toward Scottsville because I had a dinner schedule to meet. Well, the nasty
hot headwind we had been fighting all day didn't do a 180 on us but remained
constant, steady and strong at our backs. We buzzed through Glenmore and
grabbed a quick break for water and calories and then hit the pavement
again. My route hopped onto Route 20 for just a short distance but the
traffic so fairly low and the wind perfectly behind us so we opted for speed
over scenery and must have averaged about 21 +/- mph (at times much more)
most of the rest of the ride which was way above our average so far. We
rolled into Scottsville, threw the bikes on the car and headed straight to
the best recent additional in Scottsville, the James River Brewery to sample
their finest and catch some music in their beer garden. Following are a few
shots from all three of us.at times different then at times amazingly
duplicative. Bike content, we were spinning on a Bilenky, a Rivendell, and
a Salsa.and all wearing Keen biking sandals.

http://www.hamptons.com/Community/Business/6329/Custom-Bikes-For-The-Green-M

Funnily enough, Wright's favorite creation is currently on a trek from
Alaska to the southern-tip of South America, ridden by one of his friends, a
man that goes simply by the name of "Goat." The bicycle, lovingly referred
to as "Chupacabra," was designed to hold 200 pounds of gear on its back end
and currently has flip-flop sandals bolted to its pedals, as Goat prefers to
not wear shoes. It must be noted, Wright said, that Chupacabras are known in
Latin American folklore as demonic animals prone to sucking the blood of --
what else but goats. "I worked over a period of a number of weeks" on that
bike, Wright recalled, "a lot of late nights."

If anyone's inclined to try a top tube-mounted position, Problem Solvers has
