Another thing that could have happened is that when the bike was shipped,
the FD cable/housing popped out of sitting flush in the frame, so the

it should be. This has happened to me when unboxing a bike. Just a
thought.

[RBW] Re: Bike Choice

2013-08-01 Thread Zack
I have a good story - the same but different.

I got back into cycling as an adult when a friend gave me a 54 cm Trek 520
touring bike. I am 6'3. The bike is great, but it was OBVIOUSLY too small
for me. I rode it anyway, used it for transportation, and loved it. I
decided I wanted to get a bike that fit better, so I headed to my LBS to
find one. I felt trepidation as well when I walked through the store.

Instead of being forced into a brand new carbon fiber racing machine (I am
6'3" and a big dude), my local bike shop, The Old Spokes Home in
Burlington, Vermont, helped me pick out a steel bike that would better suit
my needs - a Salsa Casseroll. I thank those dudes every time I go in for
helping me onto that bike, because that is what got me to the place where I
totally love riding. I graduated from the Salsa to a Sam, and have a Hunq
now too.

Just wanted to put a plug in and say that not all LBS experiences are bad,
the fellows at the OSH pointed me on exactly the right trajectory for my
life, riding style, and bike needs.

Also, welcome!

In my experience the bottle itself doesn't impart any taste. If I have
coffee in the morning and just rinse with a tiny bit of water (like on the

with a little dish soap and water, it is totally taste-free.

Just to weigh in, my insulated kleen kanteens are amongst the gear that I
use most often. they are fantastic as you can drink coffee from them in

mine have held up for about 4 years too, dinged up, but not too bad.

The king iris cages are the bees knees for holding them. Love that combo.

Re: [RBW] IGH on a touring bike?

2013-07-03 Thread Zack B
I break rear drive trains.

A lot.

I used to break axles on 6 speed freewheels with regularity. Solid axles.

My commute involves a lot of hill climbing, including a really nasty
one in front of my house, as well as carrying heavy loads home from
the store. I ride in all weather, and a lot of rain. When I say that I
mean that I ride during the middle of the thunderstorm, not just that
I ride during drizzles.

I started commuting on a nexus 7 speed once getting freewheel parts
became a pain and conserving the ones I already had a priority (this
was back in 2000 when things looked really bleak on that front).

That hub lasted without issue until I replaced it with an 8 speed
nexus. Neither hub has had any issues except for the cassette joint
and the shifter, which were minor.

The nexus/alfine hubs have one of the strongest axles available in a
rear drivetrain for standard bicycles. The mechanism, if properly
lubricated and adjusted, is the one of the most reliable large range
mechanisms ever designed. The only people who regularly break them are
large 29ers riding them aggressively off road with a below-spec
chainring-cog ratio. These people also break everything else, and
usually break the same part, a pawl.

The shifter selection is still lame but bar end shifters
(jtekengineering.com) and now lever shifters (hotrodbicycles.com) as
well as brifters (sussex.com.tw/versa.html) are available.

The other advantage from a touring point of view is that shimano is
now making roller brakes that were clearly designed for electric
bicycles. This would give you the option of an all weather touring
brake that can easily be removed from the bicycle, and that has a heat
fail mode that is non destructive of the brake itself (you set the
grease on fire). The roller brake is also dirt cheap and
indestructible compared to a disc brake, and much simpler to set up
and maintain.

The issue with having a high enough gear range is simply: how fast do
you need to go on a long downhill? You have enough range on the nexus
for everything else. It usually isn't a good idea to race a heavily
loaded bicycle downhill in an area you don't know very well, and the
issue tourists usually face is controlling their speed rather than
spinning out. With the nexus you simply stop pedaling and let the
weight of the bicycle (that you sweated to lug up the hill) do the
work for you.

$55 for the Winters! Someone take these, great deal, moving to a climate

Re: [RBW] Saddle bags...do you leave 'em on or take 'em off when out in public?

I use cheap panniers for my daily commuting and break out the
expensive ones for touring and camping. I zip tie and hose clamp them
so that you can't just walk off with them.

Over the years I have had people go through them a few times. Recently
some a-hole stole a water bottle, a tube, and a 10 year old rain
jacket out of one of them.

[RBW] Dutch Fender Light Question

2013-04-17 Thread Zack
Just picked up one of the dutch fender lights -

When I went to install, realized that the screw is too long, it will rub
the tire if I screw the bolt all the way snug - anyone install one of these

Tips for how to shorten the bolt? Am I doing something wrong? Bolt seems
pretty long to me, I am guessing more people than just me would have the
problem.

Appreciate the help in advance!

[RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

I have all upright bars, boscos on my hunqapillar and albas on my Sam.

For a while I had noodles on the Sam, but I realized I just don't like
drops as much as albas or boscos, and got rid of them. I feel like I ride
in comfort.

They are not super fun in crazy strong headwinds, but that is also the
thing that I like least in all of bike riding, so I don't think drops would
really solve that lol.

[RBW] Tarptent advice?

2013-04-15 Thread Zack
Hey all.

I am currently contemplating picking up a Tarptent to fill a "need" for a
one person bike camping tent. I currently have the hennessy hammock, which
is fantastic but dependent on trees, and a big/relatively heavy/substantial
3 person tent.

I want to get something lightweight that I can use when I am going
somewhere that I am not sure about setting up the hammock.

I am big (6'3") and don't want any part of sleeping in open air/dealing
with bugs, so would need to get one of the tarptents that actually closes
up in order to be able to sleep at night.

Looking at the tarptent site, it's tough to determine which of their
options works best for what I am trying to do, so I figured I would ask you
guys.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone have a tarptent that they don't use/don't
like and want to get rid of?

Much obliged!

My wife and I have been car free for one year. I would add that having

Jamis Commuter which is an okay little bike, but is really more for like 1
mile excursions on fat land. I surprised her with a Betty Foy for her

[RBW] Re: More Riv Posters?!?!?

2013-02-11 Thread Zack
I like them, not as much as my existing riv poster, but if they were
offered i would have probably picked one up.

In fairness, his portfolio does say that it is a poster "exploration" done
for Rivendell. Which seems to be an accurate statement. He also doesn't
appear to be selling them.

[RBW] Re: Lock question

2012-11-20 Thread Zack
I have an abus bordo lock.

I did a bunch of research and in the end decided to go with having a lock
that was *different* than what bike thieves are used to seeing, rather than
a better version of one that they know (u lock, cable lock, etc).

The lock doesn't have to be impenetrable it just has to be better than the
worst locked bike around it. It is a bit heavy, but I think it's worth the
weight.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Studded Tires for 650b wheels?

2012-10-17 Thread Zack
Yep, I concur with Patrick on pretty much everything he said about studded
tires.

They are fine on dry pavement. I actually also happen to live in Vermont,
and, last winter, there were probably only a few days I really 'needed' the
studs for the entire ride, but there are also little patches on every ride
which were a tiny bit icy. I was also really happy last spring when I took
them off and put regular tires back on, the bike felt so much better.

One thing I learned quickly was I would forget that I didn't have studs on
my shoes, and would put my feet down and slip (which can be
painful/disastrous with a big riv between your legs lol). But the natural
consequences helped me remember not to do that after a time or two.

slimmer than other shirts like ibex, more like a regular size Large shirt

[RBW] FS: Rivish things and free Berthoud fenders.

2012-10-12 Thread Zack
Selling a couple rivish items. Also one free thing.

1. *Free* Set of Berthoud 50mm stainless Fenders. They have been drilled
already and are scratched up a bit. I also had to hacksaw a notch in the
rear fender to get it to fit between the chainstays with the 40mm duremes
on my sam. There may be a few pieces of hardware missing, but you get
fenders and stays and whatever i have attached to 'em. The catch is that
shipping is pretty expensive. I'll be using USPS to ship them, you'll pay
whatever the shipping is, via paypal. Someone just shipped a set of
fenders to me, and it cost $27, so you know the ballpark. Both my bikes
now have fenders, and I don't have room in my apt to store these, otherwise
i would keep them. If you are in Vermont you can just come by and get 'em.
I don't really want to field tons of questions about them, so no
tire-kickers please. If you need fenders that will comfortably fit a 40mm
tire or less, and aren't worried about showroom quality steel on the
fenders, this is a deal for you.

2. Patagonia nano puff hooded jacket, blue, size Large but fits more like
an XL. A couple years of use, no tears or anything, I replaced it with a
down sweater this year. $40 shipped.

3. Ibex boiled wool europa jacket, loden wool, brownish green, size XL.
Purchased a few seasons ago, looks brand new. $100 shipped. This is a
good weight jacket for riding when it's really cold, it's a thick wool.

I'll add pics on the jackets soon.

[RBW] Re: Winter Shoe Recommendations?

2012-10-01 Thread Zack
I will say that one of the best things I read on here about winter riding
last year (my first winter that I rode throughout, in Vermont) was to
remember that, while your tires may be studded, your shoes are not, so be
careful getting on/off the bike and stopping. Not exactly boot related,
but worth thinking about.

I was also tempted to get a pair of "Icebug" boots which have little metal
studs, for that same reason.

i wonder if it has something to do with bike size and weight. I have 64cm
sam and 62cm hunq, and both immediately slide down so that it seems like a.
bike is totally unbalanced and might fall, and b. bike's weight is on
saddle rails.

Re: [RBW] In theory: New Riv model with new SRAM 1x11 and no FD

2012-09-25 Thread Zack
I stick shifted my Sam when i ruined my front derailer and was waiting a
few weeks to replace it.

I didn't dedicate a stick, i left it up to the world to provide me a stick
when I needed it. I also didn't shift much. Funny how we learn to make
do.

The Rain Pants. I wish I had picked them up. I was always like "I am not
sure about the orange."

After having spent a ton of time riding in the rain, orange is PERFECT.
Deep regret on not picking them up.

Yep, that is what I did when I sold a pair of albas (make a box). Was
ugly, but got the job done.

This stuff is all still available. Would do the whole shebang for $225.

[RBW] Re: Bottom Bracket Clicking Question

2012-09-14 Thread Zack
Ok this is plain weird.

My wife came home and said "something is wrong with my bike"

I just checked and the exact same thing is happening on her betty as on my
sam.

So the constant here is me, as I took both cranks off our bikes to swap
chain rings. I put the cranks back on and greased the bolt before putting
back on. I tightened both snug with some force but didn't go crazy
tightening up. They are both tange bottom brackets with sugino XD2 cranks.

I have to imagine I have done something to cause this, but have no idea
what.

further ideas?

yep, sam, yep, tange bottom bracket.

took to LBS, they said bearings were the culprit, just having them replace
BB rather than mess with it.

thanks for the response patrick!

[RBW] Bottom Bracket Clicking Question

2012-09-14 Thread Zack
My sam has developed a weird thing.

There is like a grinding sound at the same point of every revolution of the
crank arm. I removed the chain and confirmed that the grinding sound still
happens, so it appears to be related to the bottom bracket.

Any ideas on what this is?

Bottom Bracket is not too old, definitely way less than 10,000 miles.

It is not the pedals either, happens if i hold the crank itself and move it
through rotation.

[RBW] Brooks Saddles on The Clymb

2012-09-14 Thread Zack
Hey -

There are a smattering of brooks saddles on the clymb right now (i just
purchased a b68 for $78 shipped, there are some 'colt' saddles which i have
never seen, and there are a few women's saddles).

If you use my link I get a 20 dollar credit, which i'd appreciate, but i
more just wanted to let you guys know in case anyone was interested:

http://www.theclymb.com/invite-from/ZackLuby

Also when i posted this before, lots of people signed up, but one person
complained, so i figured the lots of people signing up trumped the one
complainer.

[RBW] FS: TRP Tektro RRL Brake Levers Gum Hoods, Nitto Deluxe Stem 120mm, Davinci couplers

2012-09-13 Thread Zack
I built up my Sam with drop bars and don't love it. Going back to
albatrosses, and don't think I will miss the drops.

Anyway, I am selling:
The nice tektro brake levers, mounted and used a bit, but not beat up at
all, *$90 shipped.*
The Nitto Deluxe Stem, same, mounted and used a bit, not beat up 120 mm, *$45
shipped.*
I also have some of the davinci couplers, as I imagined switching back and
forth from albas to drops, enough to do a bike, which I paid $58 for, not
mounted or used, *$49 shipped.*
*
*
*Open to reducing price if you buy multiple stuff.*
*
*
I also have a pair of heat treated noodles, 48cm, but I think they are a
pain to ship because of the size. If others have done this successfully,
let me know and I can certainly sell those as part of package deal.

Please email me off list if you are interested! I'll post here as things
sell.

[RBW] Re: First-time bicycle assembly advice

2012-09-06 Thread Zack
i could be wrong, but i don't think that Riv framesaves frames if you don't
get a complete bike - i think i read that they don't do it because the
framesaver leaks all over the bike packing stuff.

easy enough to double-check that though, just wouldn't want you to think it
had happened if it didn't.

[RBW] D2R2 2012?

2012-08-15 Thread Zack
Anyone doing it?

I am on the fence. I am considering doing the 100k, but am not sure I am
up for it.

If I do go, I will be riding my Hunq, not sure which tires though. I have
the bruce gordon rock and roads, marathon supreme 50's and a set of the
marathon dureme 40's. Prob would be the R&R's.

It looks like a beautiful ride, but I am a bit intimidated by all the hype
surrounding it (i.e. that it's the hardest ride you'll ever do, etc.). I
like to ride, but I don't like to slog.

[RBW] Re: Do you ride your Rivendell in the winter, or use a beater bike?

2012-08-09 Thread Zack
I ride mine in the winter, in Vermont. Love it. I thought about getting a
"beater" but that would just be time spent on a bike that I don't love,
which isn't worth it. I probably wouldn't ride without fenders though, as
wintertime increases the amount of junk on the road that is getting kicked
up into the bike.

I also just ride the bike, and don't keep it showroom clean all the time
(although I do buff it up from time to time just because I think that's
fun).
