Yes, Nathan very similar bikes.

I owned a very customized 1983 Expedition similar to yours and subsequently did
2 self contained bike tours on it of one month each back in 08 and 09. I was
loaded up with 60 pounds of gear and supplies and
toured with a friend who also had an Expedition.

The Expeditions performed very well for those trips.

One trip was across Nevada on Hwy 50 in July. The other was about 30 miles
south of Denver all the way to Yellowstone National Park.

I have very fond memories of both trip. They were quite challenging but very
rewarding adventures for me.

These vintage tourers are no Rivs but have some good qualities for more budget
oriented builds.

Paul, yes! I do a Katy Trail loop, very similar to the one you describe. You
must live pretty close to me here in North Dallas.
I would say that my standard South Loop. Crossing 635 @ the Skillman DART
Station footbridge, head down the Skillman Sidewalk to around Abrams, up to the
So Pac trail, across to Mockingbird Station, Katy Trail, etc. That's 24 to 32
miles depending. Sometimes I cut across to Hillcrest/Forest, run down Bodecker
to SMU, but I dislike the part along Northpark mall, generally too many HP
Soccer Moms.
I have been trying to use the North Haven Trail more & more, they've got it all
the way past Marsh now and I believe they are going to link it up with a series
of trails that goes all the way to Fort Worth.

I am planning on driving up & riding the NETT in East Texas fairly soon.

I am afraid 40 miles is about my limit, my knees are crap.

I am Already over 300 for the month, if not for the rain, I'd probably be 400.
Unfortunately if I am over 300 it's mearly an exhibition of irresponsibility
and a sign I should be thinking about doing something productive.
Leah, I sure no one here tires of your smiling face (or Clem), better that then
my big melon head! 浪

That's an impressive ride masmojo.

I occasionally will do a long loop around North Dallas to White Rock Lake, up
the Santa Fe Trail , through downtown, up the Katy Trail , through Southern
Methodist University campus and back to North Dallas for around 40 miles. I
hope to do that later this week and that would get me 300 miles for 30 days of
April.

The last two days were much more modest at 4 miles each day as I rode quite a
bit over the weekend and needed to recover a bit.

I ride by UT Dallas all the time, but usually I skirt the campus on the North
side to Renner, the South along Campbell or on the East, I've been though the
center when my son was taking a coding class the last summer, but I'll have to
check those trees out.

The thing with Magnolia trees is that they are a lot of work when they get old.
My other house had one and it dropped leaves, flowers, seed pods, etc. ALL THE
TIME! At some point I couldn't keep up! I noticed a house 3 doors down and they
didn't have nearly as much trouble with theirs? Their tree was much younger,
so that was probably the issue. Cut mine down 16 years ago; there's a 20 foot
live oak in it's place now.

Set out on a 27 mile loop, but ended up doing 43! Northhaven trail West to
Denton road, down to Maple, through the West End, Santa Fe Trail to White Rock
& up the So Pac trail to Skillman & home!

Borderline comatose now!

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-21 Thread CB
My wife has a RadCity. It has 26" wheels and more or less resembles a
city/hybrid/hardtail. It has a throttle button in addition to pedal assist and
also has regenerative braking. It all went together fine and works as
advertised, but with about 100 miles on it it's too early to say anything about
durability. Looking at the cost of batteries, I expect the bike to be
borderline disposable once the battery starts losing capacity. With luck that
will be a long time.

Hi Doug,

He got a Pedego Interceptor - I call it the Interloper . Got it for a steal on
Craigslist and it works great for him. It’s really beach cruiser-y though; I
don’t know if I’d choose that particular model, but it’s what was available.
There are so many e-bikes on the market and not a lot of them are quality (per
the mechanic I talked to) but Pedego seems pretty solid. They have their own
“dealerships” and there happens to be one in Henderson so that’s where we take
it for service. Pretty convenient! I wish I had a place I could trust to take
MY bike...

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-19 Thread masmojo
I can't get anyone in my family to ride with me! About twice a year I can talk
me son into coming along, but his "butt hurts" for 3 days afterwards.
My wife is from the Philippine provinces where they believed that a girl riding
a bicycle might lose her virginity so she never learned to ride and my daughter
the former gymnast & figure skater has convinced herself that she can't ride a
bike!
The silver lining of this cloud is I typically can ride when & for as long as I
like.
30 miles on a one speed Cruiser may sound like a lot, but my average speed was
10+ mph; if I was on my Clementine for that loop my average speed would have
been almost 1 mph slower. Why? No idea!

[RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-19 Thread Roberta
Everyone's stories and pictures are so inspiring! Alas, I have no great ones,
other that I get in 4-5, sometimes 6, rides in per week, more than I was doing
before our current situation. Working from home and not commuting or working
until dark has freed up 2-3 hours of my day. I didn't feel like a ride
yesterday, so I went for a walk instead.

Inspired by Paul in Dallas' ride to the grocery store the other day, I hopped
on my She-Devil, the perfect in - town bike, and rode to a hardware store
across town, 4 miles RT. The basket and net on the back was a gift of AHH
owner who lived near me, moved to the UK, and offered it on the list. I love
it.

Once I got home, that bike went into my breezeway and I took Joe Appaloosa for
a nice 12 mile ride. Came home smiling.

Dave, the Evasion has a fairly long top tube, so especially with a trekking
type handlebar you need a shortish stem. This is a 60mm FUNN stem ( yeah, I
never heard of them either); I think it's actually a Downhill stem?
The handlebars are SOMA Eagle bars, they were on sale really cheap & more or
less what I was looking for so it was worth a gamble! :-) I like them in a
general sense, but neither extension for or aft is long enough in my opinion
AND they are HEAVY. I really love the Evasion, but you really can go with just
about any bar/stem concert and be happy. All the builds I have seen are drop
bars, but my set up works really good and I think an Albatross set up would be
great and I would love an Albastash on this as well.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-15 Thread Patrick Moore
My own experience is that unless your bell is very loud -- the very large
brass striker bells that Riv sells or used to sell -- and rung early and
rung often, a surprising number of recreation path pedestrians either won't
hear or won't register what they hear. I have switched to Spurcycle bells;
these aren't as loud, though they are more piercing, and I very often have
to augment the bell with a "Cyclist behind you!!" yelled in a courteous,
comforting manner, of course. Heck, I've had oncoming pedestrians walk
toward me on my side of the road (right side in the US) and not see me
approaching until I am 25 yards away, and yell, "*Heads UP!" *or slam on
the brakes and skid the rear tire. So it's less the volume than the type of
sound; many recreational walkers and cyclists seem to take for granted that
they can wholly tune out when they are off urban thoroughfares and out of
their cars.

Sounds good. BTW, they never hear "on the left" because they are blasting
their headphones! I started with a nice "ding-ding" bike bell, but they
couldn't hear that either. Eventually, I graduated to the Crane brass bell
and try to ring it only as necessary. Nice thing about that bell is that
you can modify the volume with the force of the strike.

Well, I missed the start of this challenge(?), but I've been riding a lot!
Love that Bantam!

Rode today 22miles, not a Rivendell, but one of my favorite bikes none the less.
This is the only bike I have that has a name; she's called Big Baby and I was
riding this bike because I just got the new drip camo handlebar bag from Dark
Realm and I am loving it, fits the BMX bars well.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-11 Thread REC
I hope you son is ok! Not a time to get a nail in a foot.

The name of the thread is “30 days of biking!” and I’m interpreting that to
mean 30 rides in 30 days. Reality is though that I probably get 5 out of 7
days. Work, weather, fatigue gets in the way. When I miss a day I try to get
on two rides within the next day or two to make up for it.

However, what I have promised myself (and am doing )is “something” every day,
and that “something “ when not riding is walking. So, if for some reason I
don’t get on my bike one day, I will be taking a longer than usual walk. Some
lucky days I get both.

It’s 53* out now and my Joe Appaloosa is calling to me.

No ride today in West Michigan
Temp 45 degrees gusty winds of 18-35 MPH right out of the North
Real feel temp 31degrees.
Alternating beautiful sun then short bursts of snow ❄️ for 20- 30 minutes.

On the positive side I will have another revamped Riv ready for tomorrow’s ride

Joe, I hope you do go out when you get a chance. Exercising and biking are
good for body and soul.

Nathan, it looks like you're enjoying the heck out of your new bike. Getting a
Rivendell has improved my life more than I imagined. Looks like it will be
like that for you, too. (Your face might start to hurt from the smiling.)

For everyone else, I did 5 rides in 5 days, although I really missed one day
and went on two rides yesterday. My rides tend to be 10-20 miles, but my most
common route is 12 miles.

Yesterday, I rode to the Japanese House in Philadelphia and took pictures of
flowering Cherry Blossoms. I'll post pics later this week. Today, I met a
gentleman when we both had stopped at the same place to admire the view, and we
started chatting. It turns out that he is good friend with an old acquaintance
of mine. You never know what additional delights riding can bring!

Rode all 4 days but can only be credited with two (Copenhagen Wheel

Hubbuhhubbuh Tandem sans stoker. Apparently 39 degrees is not warm enough for
my beautiful better half on what was a rainy cloudy day. Excited for near 60
degrees and sunshine tomorrow will see if that promising forecast will invoke
my fair weather spouse out for a spin. I can’t even bribe her with ice cream
or coffee because our local favorites are all closed due to the Chrono Virus

2020-04-03 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Joyce, your photo came through beautifully. I love how you have set up your
Clem. The reflectors on the fenders are just so cool looking, and I love that
bag on the rear. Very convenient! And, of course, this nurse is cheering you on
your hip surgery recovery and so pleased to hear how well you are coming along.
Physical therapists are some sort of magic, I’m sure you agree.

I hope your recovery goes just as smoothly, Richard. And I hope you can find a
safe way to involve PT.

And cheers to the teachers who are using their stolen moments for Rivendell
rides in spring weather! And cheers to Roberta because I love her and her zany
idea to make up her rides for the days she misses!

These are the feel-good stories I was hoping to hear when this thread was
started. You all are SO fun.
Leah

Thanks Joyce,Really appreciate the information. Helps me put things in
perspective. My first post op consultation is this coming Monday and I’m
hopeful that I’ll get limits on how much I can do. Up till now I’ve tried to be
careful not to overdo anything so as not to mess up the surgery. And I’m also a
bit concerned about PT because of Covid19 and being that close to a therapist.
I’m looking forward to figuring it out with my surgeon. Thanks again,Richard

take you to feel comfortable to get back on your bike after your surgery?

I know that Carquinez route between Crockett and Martinez, that's a great ride.
Especially the section they closed to cars (after too many landslides) and
eventually rebuilt as an awesome bike path.

Roberta,

My current riding availability isn't conducive to the goal, either, to the
point that I'm lucky if I can get 5 miles in a day and often that's not going
to happen. Which is to say I'm out! What people call 30 Days of Riding isn't
really a thing I can do right now and I gotta be realistic and not pretend I
can. You all have fun!

2020-04-03 Thread Roberta
I'm in, in a slightly different way. I cannot always go for a ride, so I
pledge to go for 30 rides in 30 days. If I miss a ride one day, I'll go on
an additional ride, hopefully the day previous or the day after.

Tonight will be my second ride and I hope to see some Cherry Blossoms in
bloom at the Japanese House in our local park.

I am a teacher as well, and like Rob, I make sure to leave the house
everyday for a ride - an even rotation of my stable of Rivs, depending on
the ride. With my wife being a teacher as well, and both our kids at home,
any excuse I can think of to get out for a little zen on the bike is
essential. Went all the way down to San Jose the other day on the Bay Trail
and it was a complete Ghost town. The vibe up in Redwood City and San
Carlos is far less depressing. Most places are closed but almost all the
restaurants are doing to go food so that's at least something.
