Re: [RBW] Re: UnRacer Paraphernalia description.

2013-05-31 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Well, most people are going to buy a bike so they can ride with the
group of folks that they ride with or associate themselves with. If I
were (only) a fast club rider and wanted to use my bike for commuting
too, then I can understand the idea of getting a "light" bike.

What's not appreciated or generally known is that a "heavier" bike
like the Roadeo can perform just as well as a lighter carbon/Ti bike
because it can use supple wide tires that give significant speed and
comfort advantage over many skinnier tires.

Heck, a 17-lb Ti Seven bicycle is probably a darn good bike--not a
great commuter agreed, but I still prefer a Roadeo for its wider tire
capability/fenderability etc., but it's also not a great commuter. If
I only had one bike, then I could understand going this way. I'd put a
seatpost rack or a large saddle-sack on both to commute and use a
Mark's wrap or something similar for my club rides.

I like the idea of an Unracer "just rider" category too. If we can
get a bunch of riders to associate with that group, then they can feel
good about buying great versatile bike that's comfortable to ride and
feel good about not always trying to go fast(est).

I think the Randonneur/long distance cyclist is probably what I
associate with most closely, and this group appreciates comfort and
versatility over weight much more than the "racer" category, so we are
attracted to Riv bikes. I am unapolegetically lycra and clipless, but
still feel a part of the Riv family.

Good point. While I'm pro-unracer, I'm not entirely anti-racer. I've only
done a few rides in bib-shorts and clipless pedals, but I'm not about to
ditch my bibs, SPDs, Sidi shoes, etc... yet. If I were to head out on a
brevet longer than 200k I'd probably wear bibs and use SPD pedals. I have
absolutely no desire to race at all but it doesn't mean I don't like to
push the pace. Still, I think it's important for people to know that
options exist. I think people are getting that through blogs, groups like
this, Bicycle Times, etc. And, this past month, I was up at 6am practically
everyday following the Giro. I also watched most of the spring classics and
I'm sure to tune into Le Tour this June/July.

For people getting fussy about the Unracer product descriptions, I look to

'Racing' and 'Bicycling' have become so synonymous in America that I know
people who quit riding bikes because they 'can't compete' or won't start
riding bikes because they think it's too strenuous and competitive. The
racing bias (again, I have NOTHING against racing or those who do it) has a

Yes Mike !Exploring new roads and trails and just enjoying THE moment
... each moment ... for what it is . It doesn't really matter how far or
fast you go it's the opening to "all that is" in a given moment. ..
and when you "stop and smell the roses" of any given momet dang .
you realize the smell of life no matter where you are or how you got there
.. is sweet !

Yes ... even "racing" is a type of "smelling the roses" of those particular
kind of moments ... they just are *different* kind of moments ... no
better, no worse . We exist to choose ... and infinite choices are ours .
That we have such variations in choices is absolutely astounding !

I ride in Birkenstock 2 strap sandals for example with BMX type pedals, wit
ha mid-food position on them. I used to be all concerned about "q factor"
and a "narrow" stance ... and I wanted to BE *free* of any such thoughts of
limitation. So I purposefully moved my feet out about 12-15mm on the pedals
... to a wider stance to see how it would feel. The left side felt great
right off .. the right not so. But I kept riding with the left foot wider
anyways. I took a break a while later, and when I resumed riding my right
foot just naturally went wide without my really thinking too much. It felt
awesome ! I rode the last 15 miles that way , laughing all the way home at
my "perceived" need and limitation of perfectly and narrowly placed feet
! Ahahahaa !!!So "new/different " ways of doing things is really
simply challenging our belief system of "what is true for me" ... and it
sure is FUN to change them !!

something with lights, fenders and a basket, for example. He ended up
buying a used Seven ID8, which, he proudly said in his email, weighs 17
pounds. Nice bike, I emailed back.

But I privately wondered, how does that 17-pound bike work for commuting?
If you feel like buying a gallon of milk and some potatoes on the way home,
do you have somewhere to put them? If it is pouring on your way home, did
you have somewhere to stash your rain jacket and do you have fenders so you
don't get a stripe up your back and a bike covered with grit? If you feel
like taking the long way home along the dirt trail on the levee, will your
tires stand up to it?

I needed some term to use with my friend, to say, you have your light racey
bike, but this one should be-- unracery. Or whatever. But he, like most of
the riders I know, thinks that lightness is the most important factor in
choosing any bike. If someone buys a new bike, the first question is
ALWAYS "How much does it weigh?"

[RBW] Re: UnRacer Paraphernalia description.

2013-05-30 Thread grant
I don't put a lot of thought into stuff like the badges and pins, the minor
things. They kind of are what they are, but they need some words just as a
matter of consistency, so I try to have some quick fun while not telling
any lies. The "evil, vile, live" comment that may have come off as mean or
something...was an old Boggle (it's a game) habit I picked up, like "art,
tar, rat," and ... I don't mean anything mean by it. I think by virtue of
sheet number inferiority, that riding "unracerly" whether or not you like
the label, needs a label to be a thing, and without the label or being a
thing, it will get etch-a-sketch out of sight and mind continually by the
dominance of the other stuff. I also completely dig the feeling many people
have, that labels are divisive, "us verus them" kind of thing, but I still
believe in the power of labels while wishing they didn't need to be, and if
presented without actual malice and now and then with a bit of humor, even
if unperceived, that they---shouldn't be taken too seriously. Or something.
That may just be my mellow way of fending off criticism, but I really
really do believe it. If you like the pins but not the "unracer" part, read
it as United Nations racer---all inclusive!

[RBW] Re: UnRacer Paraphernalia description.

2013-05-30 Thread Joe Bernard
I can personally attest to the benefits of loudly promoting "unracer" to
new cyclists. I met a young man on Twitter who asked me questions about
"upgrading" an old Schwinn he had just purchased for commuting. I directed
him to some parts Riv sells, and he started reading. The first thing he
mentioned several days later was "I like the idea of unracer". Now he has
bars up high and shellacked, and has stopped worrying about clipless
pedals.

What may seem a little pushy and repetitious to those of us heavily steeped
in this stuff, is probably what is needed to get through all the other
noise out there.

That's been an point of contention (or celebration depending on your views)
with the RBW ethos for a while. I'm sure the hyperbole in the description
is intentional. One of the ideas I take away from RBW and a lot of folks on
this list is "Let's not take ourselves too seriously."
