I got a pair of Chrome Mirko's http://www.chromeindustries.com/us/en/footwear/forged-rubber-mirko-black-gum earlier this year as an alternative to Adidas Samba's. They are pretty comfortable, but the sole durability and grip seems to be lacking, especially for an $85 shoe. It's got nice reflective bits on the rear of the shoe but I think I may be back to the tried and true Samba's after these bite the dust. +1 on the Keens. Keen Newports and Newport H2's are really nice. Comfy walking, waterproof for stream crossings and a step better than sneakers when riding (IMHO). The toe protection is what I particularly like when riding. The idea of scraping a toe as Leslie recounted sounds painful. I use Keen Commuters to ride clipless but I am just as happy riding in regular keen sandals when I ride without special shoes I think the keen sole is thick enough that you won't feel the rat traps - I don't on my Shimano PD 324s when I ride the platform side (rat trap like). I keep going back to ye olde Adidas Samba. I was particularly into them when I still rode with clips 'n straps, as the aero profile of the shoe worked well in that regard. I'm sticking with them on platform pedals cause they're just great, comfy, minimal shoes. I've been trying out the Evolv Cruzer lately too, also nice so far - albeit more flexible in the sole but likely will be cooler than the Sambas once the summa heat comes. Ahh, I see, so it's not possible to respond directly to another's email these days? Seems like a very limiting option, especially for the need to communicate privately about for sale items so the board doesn't get cluttered with irrelevant messages. Perhaps I've just added to said pile with this reply. . . I liked the private reply option a lot when it was available. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The ability to reply directly to the author is a list-administrator configurable option in Google Groups. It has nothing to do with the redesign. The owner of this group has configured replies to go to the group and so they do. [RBW] Re: What do Ricendell riders use for cycling shoes (not clipless).
My winning combo is VP pedals with Asics running shoes. Light shoe, terrific interface with the pedal, excellent grip, and never feel the pedal through the sole. Only drawback is this shoe is a bit minimalist for winter riding, but it doesn't rain anymore, so I just wear a thicker sock when it's cold. [RBW] Re: What do Ricendell riders use for cycling shoes (not clipless).
At the risk of sounding very Retrogrouch, I'll say I really don't understand the perceived need for stiff cycling shoes, given the fairly low intensity of pedaling a bicycle. I have worn minimalist shoes for a few years now because they're extremely light and breathable and very comfortable to walk in. I can't see how a stiff shoe would in any way improve the quality of my ride. Get stripped down shoes and stronger feet! I had worn New Balance 'Minimus' shoes for several years, but they degrade prematurely with the adhesive on the sole being less than adequate. I recently got a pair of Merrell Trail Glove 3's and they seem to be a significant improvement over the New Balance 'Minimus' line. They have what they call a rock plate in the forefoot, which is basically a piece of rubber added for more impact protection. The sole is a bit more substantial than NB and I think these will have better durability just based on the look of how the sole is bonded. I also really like the rubber compound and tread pattern on the sole; extremely grippy on the pedals, even when wet. I don't think you can do better than this right now for a minimalist running shoe. http://www.rei.com/product/879947/merrell-trail-glove-3-trail-running-shoes-mens I've also recently switched to 45nrth Heiruspecs pedals and they are much better than anything I've used previously (Thin Gripster, V.O Sabot, Gripkings, etc.) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: What do Ricendell riders use for cycling shoes (not clipless).
I posted a similar request regarding shoes with thin gripsters and got lots of great advice ( https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/surlyprof$20shoes/rbw-owners-bunch/aVHSUQf7RRM/udfBHiIE_g8J). I have slightly wider feet so some of the recommendations wouldn't work. Ended up buying Scarpa Mystic Lites (http://www.scarpa.com/mystic-lite). They have a little more of a hiking sole than I would like but the soles are stiffer than the sneakers I was using. Next time I may try their approach shoe such as their Vitamin or Crux. Seek out sales. I found the Mystic Lites for $59. Christopher Chen recommended Red Wing Chukkas. I actually stumbled across a pair of irregulars in black (postman shoes) for 40 bucks so I bought them. Probably too dorky to wear with shorts (unless you are in uniform) but I have to admit, when I commuted to work in them, they were pretty awesome. I may have to eat the full price of the tan or brown ones in the future. Their website is offering a $20 off coupon if that helps.
