Absolutism has a place in our society. Let me give you some examples:

I absolutely believe that all adult americans should have the
ability to gain the tax and probate advantages they can get
through marriage regardless of their race, gender, religious
beliefs or sexual orientation.

I believe anyone pushing to withhold those rights from folks in
our society is a bigot and should be shunned.

I absolutely believe that all women should have control over their
own bodies.

I believe anyone advocating for them losing control of their own
bodies is Akin(haha, get it?) to a rapist and should be punished
as such.

Those are things I absolutely believe. You let me know when I'm
being irrational, provided you can present logic as such.

I voted early, but rode the Atlantis to work on election day in a
deluge here in the ATL. Even had on the rainpants, and it was pouring
enough to still soak through the leather uppers of my boots. (Should
have bought those splats . . . ) I figured if I didn't ride, it would
be bad luck. Then I rode home in moderately less nasty weather, and
made some fresh bread for the kids to continue the karma.
Surprisingly, it worked.

regarding rationality. All the issues I've seen listed here (other than
taxes) are state issues and not federal issues, so to paraphrase Inigo
Montoya, I don't think voting for the President means what you think it
means.
Jim, I'm sure Sen. Romney has already spent a couple of years on a bike -
he's fit right in.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-08 Thread Steven Frederick
Sorry, that was a bit glib. I feel a little hesitant to continue this
thread in a political direction. The point I hope to make is that if
there are some individuals who believe absolutely that "A" is more
important than "B", and some other individuals who believe just as
fervently that "B" is more important than "A," then it is the
responsibility of those elected by all of us to reach a consensus that
both extremes will find more or less equally unsatisfactory, and that
everyone that falls in between the two extremes of the A/B question
can live with.

Speaking only in the most general terms of course.

I feel strongly about some of issues you mention, and less strongly
about others. I also have biases and opinions about things you didn't
mention, but that are also very much points of contention these days.
But I'll keep all that to myself due to the off-topical nature of this
discussion.

Steven,
I think you're committing the fallacy of the golden mean. Absolutism has a
place in our society. Let me give you some examples:

I absolutely believe that all adult americans should have the ability to
gain the tax and probate advantages they can get through marriage
regardless of their race, gender, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.

I believe anyone pushing to withhold those rights from folks in our
society is a bigot and should be shunned.

I absolutely believe that all women should have control over their own
bodies.

I believe anyone advocating for them losing control of their own bodies is
Akin(haha, get it?) to a rapist and should be punished as such.

Those are things I absolutely believe. You let me know when I'm being
irrational, provided you can present logic as such.

I rode my bicycle to the polls, as well, but the only reason I posted on
this thread was because of the irrational opinions and fears I saw voiced

I actually laughed out loud at that Kelly.

As per Grant's comments,
One day there will be a party that is fiscally conservative but not
antedeluvian. Until that day I'll be voting democrat pretty exclusively. How
does that affect which companies I purchase from? I'm not sure. I still don't
buy from Nike because they pretty much led the slave labor movement. I'm sure I
have other examples. If Grant had said he was happy Bush won (specially the
first time) I'd probably not have given it a second thought.

Again, an issue with politics nowadays is the arguing of facts. I believe
Richard Nixon and the Southern Strategy was not in the 80s, but then again
I do have a degree in Political Science from University of South Carolina
so maybe they led me astray. But dont trust me, trust our find friends at
Wikipedia, or have they been infected by the liberal media?

"The passage of the Civil Rights Act of
1964was the
event that finally moved the majority of Southern states to the
Republican Party. From the end of the Civil War to 1960 Democrats had solid
control over the southern states in presidential elections, hence the
term "Solid
South " to describe the states'
Democratic preference. After the passage of this act however their support
on a presidential level shifted to the Republicans"

Virginia went Democratic in both the Presidential and Senatorial
elections this year. In Alexandria Va, where I live, Democrats won the
Mayoral election and all the City Council spots.

That is true but sadly most people just watch the network that they watch
and that is thier source of information. I do love the rise of independent
media on the web, gives way different perspectives than you would ever get
on the mainstream media. I am obviously a liberal but try to not just limit
myself to their media sources and I try to take a good look at the issues
and don't just block vote. For instance I live in NY and did not vote for
Cuomo since I find him repulsive but did not vote for the conservative
lunatic either, there were better 3rd party candidates on the ballot.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-07 Thread Peter Morgano
Be that as it may, the thing I hate the most about the media is the false
equivalency that is measured against all politics. In some cases one guy or
party or belief is just wrong, and we live in such a PC society that no one
in the media can just come out and say it. When you watch old news casts
from the civil rights era or Vietnam war news people were not afraid to say
what they thought, they actually had passion and weren't trying to sell
"infotainment" to the masses. I agree that politicians need to work
together but to say "both sides are at fault all the time" makes it worse,
not better.

2012-11-07 Thread Ron Mc
the reason the two parties worked together when Grant and I were kids was
because there were four parties. North/south democrats, and east/west
republicans. Coalitions would form over issues of common interest between
the four regions and two parties. Ending in the 70s, people changed
parties and polarized, so now, it's the major urban centers against the
rest of the nation - if you look at last night's EC map, it will show you
that. The parties will not work together as long as each side keeps
fear-mongering the beliefs of the other. The media feeds on that
fear-mongering, because they must spin every news story to last 360 hours.

nothing good can come of this. Thankfully the fine people at Rivendell

I see nothing wrong with what they have to say, even as an Athiest,
although I can see how a devout member of another religion might be put
off. It comes down to the fact we live in a great nation, where you can say

can vote in the second best way, with thier wallets.

2012-11-07 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Re: Grant's story. Interesting that a person who apparently enjoys Riv's
approach to bicycles would be so hung up on Grant's fairly mainstream political
stance. Is he boycotting half the country? More than likely the mutual interest
in bikes made the dude feel chummy with GP, and that initial chumminess made
the "betrayal" on political philosophy even more profound.

My shop is in a blue-collar area of South Minneapolis, which is a pretty
diverse place. I've learned a lot about people, but the most useful thing I've
learned is that a common interest in bikes does not mean two cyclists have
ANYTHING else in common.

Oh yeah. I walked to my poll twice (registration issues), but only voted once.

We did not ride to the polls after work today. A combination of a later
time off work, light drizzle in the low 40's and more traffic made me
decide to just keep driving the carpool to the polling station after work.

The sanity of all mail in voting... I heard King Count was expected to get 86%

The whole vote by mail thing was championed and put together by my favorite
Wasington republican Sam Reed. My ballot was so sad and one-party without him
in there.

I spent election day building up my new to me Ram. Had trouble with the metal

Two things I dont talk about with people I dont intimately know, religion
and politics. If Grant was a republican I would still spend my money, if he
was a republican who gave to anti-abortion and radical right causes, not so
much. I think like all things it is a matter of degrees. I am a liberal,
athiest, democrat but I have many friends who are not and they are still
friends. I lived in South Carolina for 9 years and had many close friends
who would often have a good debate over politics, but after it all we were
still friends. I also worked at a Vegan restaurant where there were many
causes I deemed too liberal but still put myself out there in a respectful
manner to try at talk about things with people. If we cant talk about what
makes us different then we have truely lost "democracy." You cant just
live with your head in the echo-chamber, you will never expand your
horizons that way.

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Joe K
Staten Island really could be (and sometimes is) a really beautiful
place. We were attracted here by how much it resembles the SF Bay
Area, at least here on the North Shore. We are in a neighborhood of
Victorian houses (Stapleton) with expansive views of the Verrazano
bridge and the harbor, and there are lovely hills everywhere. But
there is little consciousness among the locals of how special it is.
Someone once wrote to the local paper that S.I. could be New York's
Sausalito if anyone cared about it. A few of us do!

There are rumblings about the refurbishment of the Verrazano, and
controversy about including a bike path. Transportation Alternatives
has asked cyclists to get involved and demand one. I will do so!
(Hope it isn't too late.)

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Joe K
I'm in NYC too, like Peter, but in Staten Island. Normally I DO ride
to the polling place, just down the street, but due to a confluence of
circumstances I ended up there at the end of a driving/shopping trip
with my son (who. by the way, is a car guy...is that the curse of
parents who are cyclists?

I did ride to a restaurant for lunch yesterday, as we had no food in
the house post-Sandy. Rode the Univega beater, as Im comfortable
locking it up just about anywhere. Now that some concert work is
over, will have time to attend to the bikes...the Uni needs new bar/
stem combo, for example.

Joe

Didn't know it was against the law to take a pic outside a voting
center.

Cold night in Michigan! Super duper fast voting, no lines, enjoyable ride.
Almost got run over by a turbo kitted car zooming through a pedestrian
crossing on the way back home. No problem for Bombadil! :)

[RBW] Re: Who rode their bicycle to vote in the US today?

2012-11-06 Thread Philip Williamson
Like DougP, I walked to the P.O. to mail my ballot on Satuday.

OT, but I believe Riv-attitude appropriate: This last week I've had an
ongoing conversation, not even a debate, with someone who at first appeared
to be my political polar opposite. It's one of the few online conversations
I've had that got MORE civil as it progressed. Man it made me feel good. It
literally started out with rage-noises, and ended with "as a sort of
friend, I want you to take care of yourself." I learned about him, he
learned about me. I don't think I would have been able to have that
conversation without learning some hard lessons on this list and the iBOB
list.

So "As a sort of a friend, I want you to take care of yourself," :^)

I rode my Hillborne over. Also, no pictures, but took this a week ago at
my new place (was living around the corner from work, so I'm looking
forward to the new 6 mile commute).
