[TANKS] Re: drum servos

2009-02-22 Thread Chrysanthos Kanellopoulos

I have hacked my old cordless screwdriver 2.4 or 3.6 Volts for this purpose.
I basically retained the end part with teh motor and gear box. It would make
a far more powerful solution , only it is still too fast for rotating a
turret. Perhaps the ESC will deal with this problem.?

Thanks for the props Neil, and give some to yourself. Seeings as
you're one of the premier builders in the UK. I've had many
rebuilds, redesigns and flat out mistakes made over the years.I don't
mind sharing and I don't mind using the successes of others.

Callum, keep in mind,it's 1/6 scale or 3 foot. The UN is built to
the 3 foot rule and made very many supply runs. It was also extremely
reliable and only used the Tri-Pact controller. Done this way you
could easily field your Cat by the summer battle. Then over the winter
you could fine tune it however you want. Or leave it alone if it works
well and start on your tank.

Yes, but the great thing about those multi-turn servos is that they provide
position feedback. I was planning to try one as a turret rotator using a
light weight timing belt configuration to gear it down by about 3:1. I want
to make sure there's some slip in case somebody (Steve !) rams my marker
barrel.

Hmmm ... last time I checked, that's exactly what a geared motor will
do. Throw two inexpensive switches on a servo (aka. MAG Speed Control)

There was probably some lock-tite (or something similar) between the nut
and shaft to hold it in place. If so, a little heat from a propane
torch softens it enough to allow the nut to turn with normal force.
Otherwise, you run the risk of ruining the shaft and/or sprocket.

Frank P.

BTW: Remember to use lock-tite (or something similar) on the shaft
before you go to battle. You don't want that sprocket coming off when
being chased by another tank :-)

[TANKS] Re: drum servos

2009-02-22 Thread Joker

Analog servos can be 'hacked' to remove the stops. You basically need
to remove the pot from the servo, and you get a gear motor that does
free rotation in either direction, and its still has its 'speed
control' so you can go slow or fast. I did it to one servo to get it
to twist a piece of threaded rod. Its easy, compared to building the
rest of the tank's systems ;). For instructions you can do a google
search.

John P wrote:-
`The UN supply vehicle runs with 4 KCM's and just simple skid

Yes I can see that working well , only using 4 KCM I can see a
problems with space the supacat is tiny and KCM are bulky , will 4
KCM fit ?
And the supacats wheels are only about 5inch so speed is low, I`ll bet
the UN vehicle has larger wheels .

Chrys Kane wrote:-
`Is it possible to replace the 12V motors with 18 V or 24 V motors in

I think someone with sufficient skills could make that happen and that
would improve the speed , it may depend on re fitting the small cog
that was on the old motor and hoping it stays on the new and more
powerful motor. If I attempted this, one of them would fail 30 seconds
into the first battle.
Also I’ve been wondering where Id put just `one` 12v battery in a
1/6th supacat,

So . Herm ! Yes !

I think its as hard to build a small vehicle as it is to build a big
vehicle.

Maybe a supacat should be built slightly larger than 1/6th to make it
doable.

Personally I would put a small geared 30:1 motor on each wheel and
hope they don’t get too hot with constant running, then run the lot
off a sabretooth 2x25 and a 5amphour SLA. I like the idea of 6 wheel
drive, If the KOR do battle in Marton woods this year then the 2 wheel
drive SV012 will be almost useless.
However Callum if someone signs Pittelli or Kane at the end of an
email , then that is advice worth listening to. If you need any help
just call .
