[TANKS] What's stopping you ?
At Gettysburg, we were discussing why more people don't attend the battles. We have a lot of fun with the 6-8 regulars that show up consistently, but it would be great to see some fresh targets . I mean faces. It seems to me like there are three kinds of tankers. The regulars, the tank owners, and the hopefuls. The tank owners are those few who have built a vehicle but do not attend battles. The hopefuls are those who just cannot complete a vehicle, sometimes after years of trying. Is there anything that can be done to encourage battle attendance for all the groups ? Is it distance ? Scheduling conflicts ? Tank owners, were the battles you attended disappointing somehow ? For the hopefuls, what is the single biggest factor preventing you from completing an asset ? Time ? Money ? Know-how ? -Doug --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the R/C Tank Combat group. i didn't know what it was this past week, but i kept getting all of my dates screwed up, or i would have been there (the worse part was, i could have been there if i knew it was Sunday and not Saturday - my date screw up...). I guess i'm a tank owner/hopeful. I have a tank and am hopeful to have it (completely) running this summer - now i'm off to get the dirt out of the truck and into the yard. i haven't heard anything about yesterday, hope it was nice out Chris, _Odyssey Slipways_ (http://hometown.aol.com/odysseyslipways/index.html) --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the R/C Tank Combat group. [TANKS] Re: What's stopping you ?
As a 'hopeful', it's been money to a certain extent. Know-how I either had, or found on here. Lately, time has been an issue, although I plan to get the chassis rolling under its own power during my 3 week long break after my final tomorrow. As for battles, travelling to MD is a matter of time and money. Both of which will get better after I graduate in the fall and start nursing full-time. (vice working and schooling, both full time) I hope to make at least one battle up north next year with my Sherman. If Mike Mangus gets home from Ko-rea in time, maybe we can carpool (truckpool?) together to save the money. For local battles, I need to get recruiting and working to get the local fellas who've expressed interest, and get Copperhead to come up from Florida for a battle! I can understand why distant tankers can’t travel to Maryland or Pennsylvania for battles. To date, however, I don’t think any U.S. battles have occurred outside of that region. I could be mistaken about that. For example, Kelly, both you and Aahz say that lack of nearby opponents keep you away from being active in the hobby. What keeps you two from meeting up somewhere in Washington ? I would guess it’s because there are no battle-ready assets in that area. Is that right ? Kelly G wrote: For me it's the distance, time and the money (not necessarily in that order). I'm north of Seattle, Washington and most people battles seem to be on the east coast, so it takes a lot of time and money to go that distance... Guess what guys ... the first battles held in the US and Europe were held with just two guys, who lived in the same area. You should never assume that when we say go battle we mean go to a well-established battle event hosted by other people. We mean go battle ... build two vehicles (even just a tank and supply vehicle will do), call a buddy and go battle in an open field somewhere. After you've shot (or attempted to shoot another vehicle), I guarantee you'll get pumped up to build more and battle more. If you want to move out of the hopeful category, you need to simply finish your vehicle. If you want to move out of the tank owners category, you need to simply drive your vehicle around and shoot something else. Heck, even an obstacle course with some targets would be more fun that sitting in front of your computer and hoping that someday somebody holds a battling event near you. If you have the luxury of being within 2 hours or so of other members, then you really have no reason not to battle (with the exception of scheduling). Currently, much less than 10% of the people who have expressed serious interest in participating in the hobby have actually ever even battled in just one battle :-( Frank P. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the R/C Tank Combat group. Distance pure and simple, but if it were a 2 day event I would consider coming now that I have a viable asset to battle with. For larger outings, we bring large CO2 bottles to refill from, spare masks and field equipment like orange cones (to mark the bases), buildings and barricades. [TANKS] Record-Breaking Litigation
Annapolis, MD: In a surprise move, Tri-Pact Global Industries, LLC filed a massive lawsuit this morning in U.S. Federal Court against Tyng Industries, Inc. seeking total damages of $500 Billion (US) for alleged patent violations, failure to meet contractual obligations and gross negligence. If successful, Tri-Pact would not only force Tyng Industries into receivership, but would also transfer a large portion of the Federal Bail-out received by Tyng Industries recently to the well-stocked Tri-Pact offshore bank accounts. At the heart of the titanic legal struggle is the recent failure of a critical technology component designed by Tyng Industries many years ago. It's really quite a simple matter for the courts to decide, stated Dr. Frank Pittelli, Tri-Pact CEO, we licensed track technology from Tyng Industries years ago in exchange for various patent rights, a number of mutual development contracts and, most importantly some very lucrative marketing opportunities. He continued by saying that, we upheld our end of the contract, but Tyng has failed miserably upholding his side of the deal ... we just want our money back. Based on our initial reading of the legal papers, the problem started yesterday during a routine appearance of the venerable Tiger-1 (T001) on the battlefield. According to court documents, about 20 minutes into the battle, the Tiger suffered a catastrophic track failure which left it unable to participate for the remainder of the day.Tri- Pact field experts were quickly brought onto the scene and determined that the failure was the direct result of the track design, as originally provided by Tyng Industries. Despite over 5 years of battlefield abuse which clearly degraded the track components, Tri- Pact experts believe that Tyng's design should have anticipated all those problems. As one anonymous legal expert stated, After all, if McDonald's has to pay not-so-intelligent customers from spilling hot coffee on themselves, we shouldn't Tyng have to pay for anything that goes wrong with any TTS, regardless of customer mistakes. Dr. Von Hupple, Tri-Pact Director of RD, stated that Based on our in- depth analysis, the so-called 'Tyng Track System (TTS)' design was a ticking time-bomb. Any vehicle that battles more than 40 times with that design will suffer the same fate. He continued to state that Tiger-1 is one of the best maintained tanks in the hobby, having been rebuilt numerous times to stay current with technology. Unfortunately, we didn't know that the Tyng design would fail after just 40 battles, given that Steve Tyng himself assured us it would 'last forever'. If just a mechanical failure were at issue, the lawsuit would not be anywhere near the $500 Billion mark, but Tri-Pact alleges that Tyng actually knew about the design flaw and actively worked to conceal the problem, while raking in hundreds of millions of dollars from their joint partnerships with Tri-Pact. It's no coincidence that Tyng sold T005 (the original TTS vehicle) well before it had battled 40 times and that rumors of the Cromwell being sold after only 20 battles are rampant, stated Dr. Von Hupple. According to our analysis, Tyng has always known that the TTS design simply can't go beyond 40 battles. Dr. Pittelli stated that We expect Tyng will say that it's our fault and we should have used glue to solve all our problems, but perhaps he's been sniffing too much glue himself instead of producing proper, reliable designs. He continued to say that, As a national treasure, we expect sub-contractors who assist with the maintenance of Tiger-1 to have the same pride of workmanship as we do. Given that the case is expected to take years to work through the courts, Tri-Pact has already started working on a more permanent technical solution. We have many years of battle experience and data for all known track systems, and we're confident we can improve upon the flawed TTS design and develop a far superior Tri-Pact Track System TPTS for use on the Tiger-1 and for export around the world, stated John Pittelli, Director of Global Arms Sales. Our recent successful sale of arms to the Vegas Alliance shows that Tri-Pact is still the world-leader in arms development and sales for the R/C Tank Combat market. Bringing peace to the world through superior firepower. Steve Tyng, Founder and CEO of Tyng Industries, was unavailable to comment on this article by press time, although we expect to hear from him shortly. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the R/C Tank Combat group. [TANKS] Re: Tank Build
The tank looks good so far. It's huge ! I have a couple of questions about your drive train, though. It looks like you use one solid axle driven by two motors. Was this just a temporary arrangement for the photo ? If not, how will the tank turn ? Also, I think you chain tensioners will not stand up the motor torque. I can envision the screw in the side of the motor mount piece tearing right out. I have 350W geared scooter motors (M01s) in my tank, and they ripped through both 3/4 MDF and 3.4 soft wood. Now they're mounted on 3/4 plywood and buttressed against the front of the hull. - Doug -Original Message- From: rctankcombat@googlegroups.com [mailto:rctankcom...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Suprtrpr17674 Sent: Monday, June 15, 2009 6:03 PM To: R/C Tank Combat Subject: [TANKS] Re: Tank Build Sorry the pictures are out of order but if you follow by number it will make a little more sense. [TANKS] First ever: Rctank Soccer
In the afternoon, possibly due to heatstroke, a scenario unlike any other was chosen. That's right faithful readers, Rctank Soccer. For the intial sortie the teams were as follows. GBFC (Glen Burnie Football Club) Will's SU, John's Comet and Steve's Cromwell Penn United- Joe's Hetzer, Doug's Tiger, and Kurt's Brummbar. Frank's Tiger had lost a claw during the morning event and he was the referee, scorekeeper and rules generator. Before the kickoff, Doug's Tiger developed a hair ball, network problem, no signal. So Will, was sold to Penn United. That left a friendly little game of 3 on 2. But Steve and I believed the 2 plucky Brits would have no trouble with Russian and German members of Penn United. Rules for the first ever game were: 1. Shooting the ball was like a tackle and turned possession of the ball over to your team. 2. Ball was pushed by the tanks, dribbling. 3. Disable the opponents ,legal hits ,no yellow card 4. Push the ball through the cones. Goooll. Steve was our striker and I was the fullback. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZxxaLTjWUk With the lightning quick score by GBFC another rule was added to make it more interesting. Each member of the team must touch the ball before you could score. Doug's Tiger had it's cramp successfully massaged away by the Penn United trainer and returned to the pitch. Will was now back with GBFC, which was only fair since Will does reside in Glen Burnie. With the sides even and the addition of the 3 touch rule it looked to be an interesting match. Here's the highlight of the score that put GBFC up 2-Nil for good. Notice the bludgeon like footwork as the Comet makes it's way to the ball. Will and Steve had already touched it and the way was clear. Using the only trick at my disposal, you can see where I ran up over the ball and squirted a sideways pass to myself. Hope you like the footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZxxaLTjWUk --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You are currently subscribed to the R/C Tank Combat group. It did fairly well considering that it came right off the production line Saturday night and went to battle Sunday morning. All of the new electronics performed without a hitch. paintball feed needs to be reworked, but it did chamber rounds for the most part. The track tension had not been changed, ended up it needs to be tighter due to the extra power of the M1's.If you look closely as I drive by in the second vid, the right track is totally off,you see the sprocket moving alone. But all of these are easily remedied. Just some tweaking and fine tuning with a 15 lb. maul and it will be money. LOL. Once I get my camera to work again I'll film some ball mount action. [TANKS] Re: Tank Build
Thanks for the post Doug and the input. I still need to cut the rear axle in half, when I placed my order for pillow bearings I counted wrong and needed to order two more so that’s why the rear is still one solid piece I just got the two bearings in the mail last week. I’ve heard the motors have a lot of torque so I’ll just keep my fingers crossed. I was at Home Depot and really didn’t spend any time thinking about that portion of the build so I just grabbed a couple door hinges and bolts to try and save another trip. I’m sure I’ll have to come up with some other system when the thing breaks the first time I put power to it. The whole tank is made out of ¾ Agathis plywood and with every thing it’s got on it right now it weights in at little over 140 lbs. I figured in the end with everything it should come in at a respectable 200+ pound tank. On Jun 15, 7:27 pm, Doug Conn dwconn...@comcast.net wrote: The tank looks good so far. It's huge !
