I'm still around. Been more active in the boat combat since battles here kinda
died off. My Locust still doesn't have an ideal drive system but with no
battling I haven't been to motivated to work on it. Would love to see some more
activity. This hobby is too dang fun to let die.

[TANKS] Re: where is everyone?

2019-10-27 Thread neroc1

Im still building tanks in the UK. And still teaching it to pre teenagers
in secondary school, now in our 8th year .we have 4 (NERF) tanks and 3 more
in construction.
we have a battle day at least once a month and the kids love it. I
sometimes cant believe how lucky I am to get paid to teach tank building to
children. one or two of them are taking an interest in building tanks
themselves. but I think it must be difficult for children, cost wise and
having space to do it.

I think its a major shame that tank chat has died off from this site, I
used to really enjoy it.

If any one wants tank battles in their area ,i my advice is you make at
least two tanks and get your friend to control one and you control the
other, then build more and it will grow. thats what I did.
I found it very difficult finding a safe location to fire paintballs .the
general public always seemed to stick thier face in on this over crowded
island we call Britain.

I do believe though - if you want it , Make it happen

Gregory and Clark...

Yeah, DSL has a smaller footprint but the builder (Me :-) ) has more
experience with Puppy Linux (and OpenSuse, and Redhat, and SLED, and
SLES, etc.).
Yeah, I could attach a bluetooth dongle and a Wiimote but why? Heck,
I *could* put a dongle on it and control it with my cellphone but
again I ask, why? It is not that I am going to use the pc to control
the tank (I think I'll use a PS2 controller and C6C), but rather use
it (the PC) to run some auxiliary, none critical, fun to have, things.
I work with servers, networks, firewalls, etc every day, I do want
video from my tank but I don't want it begin to resemble my
'work'. :-)

2010-03-01 Thread Steve Tyng
Translation:

Don is planning on using two Wii controller accessories (the
Nunchuk's, not the Wii controller) to provide four analog position
signals and two on/off switch functions to his custom wireless control
system. Sounds like a fun project but offers no advantages beyond the
current PS2 controller or standard R/C system options. The purported
advanced features of the Wii controller are not used in this scheme at
all.

Some thoughts:

  - Two Nunchucks cost the same as one PS2 controller which offers the
the same number of joysticks and many more switching options
  - Adapting the long range wireless tech mentioned to a more flexible
controller would be more beneficial to the hobby
  - Having two separate hand controllers as described would leave no
hand free for wiping paint off your mask
  - A dangling controller while wiping paint off your mask could lead
to inadvertent tank movement and/or gun discharge

For what it's worth, I am planning on using wii controllers for my Abrams

have skimmed parts, and would like to address some of the things I've read.
If these points have already been resolved, please disregard my addition.

First of all, there are several interfaces on the wii controllers.  Yes,
there is an infrared interface.  There is also a bluetooth interface.  Using
a wii controller does not require you to use infrared.

The wii controllers have several features that can used to control a tank,
including accelerometers and analog joysticks (on the nunchuk component).
The wii controller is far from being useless to control a tank

For my control system, I have designed (and produced) a working pcb, and
written microcontroller code that reads the analog joysticks on the wii
nunchuks.  I will be using an xbee wireless serial link to connect the
transmitter and receiver boards that I have designed.  This will allow me to
use a wii nunchuk in each hand, using one joystick for tank movement, and
the other joystick for turret movement.  There are even well placed index
finger trigger buttons on each nunchuk for firing.  Far from useless :-)

Oh, and there are xbee modules available that allow for up to 15 miles
ranges on clear days (which don't operate in the 2.4ghz spectrum, so no
interference from cell towers, wifi hotspots, and microwaves like you have
 with bluetooth)

(For the record, I think this list is awesome... sarcasm, nay-saying, and
 all  :-)

I think it's called humour (I'm Canadian and it IS spelled that way)
tongue in cheek or with a grain of salt if you prefer.

If you go back and re-read with your sense of outrage on hold, you
will find that basically you have been given some pretty good advice
on what works and what doesn't. Added up (collectively), you've got
thirty plus years of experience telling you just because you CAN do
something doesn't mean it will be practical. :-)

Personally, for my first tank I would stick with control systems that
are proven to work in this arena. Build it, take it out and abuse it
and get to know what kind of environment, stresses, and operating
conditions it will have to function in. After that, if you still think
it is a viable option, then build a test vehicle and have at it. Post
your successes and failures (and yes, you will have them).

I can see a couple of reasons right off why I wouldn't use it. The
Wii receiver is designed to sit in a motionless, (relatively) dust
free, moisture free, and vibration free environment. The pounding a
1/6th scale tank can take during the course of a test run, not to
mention actual combat, may surprise you. Picture taking your Wii
receiver up to waist height and dropping it, repeatedly. Yes, they do
generate those kinds of impacts and more. So there is the first
problem you have to over come.
The other battlers may not always be able to see your tank but they
will see YOU, your relative position, facing, and exaggerated arm/hand
movements they will know where your tank is headed and you may well
arrive only to find you've motored into an ambush.
From my limited experience with Wii, I think you will find that the
controllers don't react fast enough or with nearly enough precision.

While it might be 'cool' to do, IMHO I think you'll soon realize that
it just won't work in this scenario. Besides, there are lots more
'cool' things to put in a tank. For example...(and I'm a geek for a
living)

Webcams (driver's view, gunner's view, rear view) running under
Zoneminder on Puppy Linux with a Mini-itx motherboard and a 16gb
compact flash drive with a couple of inexpensive usb flash drives to
hold video captures (with sound).

Laser Sight (Yeah, I know the draw backs).

Functioning machine gun (airsoft?)

Mortars. :-)

Smoke screen generator.

...and the list goes on.

Cheers,
Fred I'm sorry I ran over your tank. I was aiming for your foot.

Re: [TANKS] Re: Where to..

2010-02-26 Thread Frank Pittelli

In the immortal words of Dan Ackroyd, Steve you ignorant slut :-)

Indeed, those of us with advanced wisdom are also a little long in the
tooth as well, but that doesn't mean that what we speak is not the
truth. The Wii controller is great for playing video ping pong (not
like the PONG I grew up on), but there is absolutely no way that it can
be used on the battlefield. First of all, it requires an infared
transmitter to be placed on the tank (or vice versa) and the transmitter
has to be pointed at the operator at all times. Even if someone could
concoct a solution to that problem, using infared communication in
bright sunlight with obstacles all over the place would have to be overcome.

But, for the sake of academic debate, let's assume that someone solves
all those problems and actually gets a Wii controller to work with a
tank on the battlefield (for which I will give a crisp $100 bill).
Comparing the Wii controller to a PS2 gamepad or even an R/C transmitter
is not even a comparison. Using arm motions and wrist swirls to
replaced precise thumb joystick motions is insanity, trying to reverse a
few million years of evolution. Of course, given your penchant for
wooden building materials, I can see how such prehistoric control would
appeal to you, Mr. Tyng, but those of us living in the 21st century are
better suited to use modern solutions.

When it comes to innovation I have one simple rule: If it's not being
demonstrated on the battlefield, then it's just talk.

What is the problem with kiddie car motors?
If the tank is under 50#, should there be a problem?
I know most tanks out there are heavy, but I am stillbuilding track
for my m-10 WOlverine and hope to be a lightweight that runs on
KCMs ...

KCMs would be OK for a 50 pound vehicle, but you'll also need to gear
them up a little (1.5 or 2 to 1) because they typically run a little
slower (e.g. 200 RPM) then our normal speed (e.g., 400 RPM).

Another potential problem is their size and layout. Since they
typically use plastic gearboxes, they take up more space than other
geared motors. But, assuming you have the room, that's not an issue.

I knew the term academic would have Prof. Sommer chiming in with an

I say good luck to any grad student who gets the Wii controller and
infrared transmitter working properly on a moving vehicle on the
battlefield, even if only the buttons are used. The sun has a little
more power than the controller LED and infrared detectors can't see

The infra-red component of the Wii Remote is only to detect which way it is
pointing so that it can be used similar to a mouse pointer. You can interface
to it using Bluetooth only.

From Wikipedia:

Third-party use
Since the release of the Wii console, people have been exploring different new
ways in which to use the Wii Remote. Many third-party applications are
currently in development through Wii homebrew.[1] One popular Windows program
called GlovePIE allows the Wii Remote to be used on a personal computer to
emulate a keyboard, mouse or joystick. Connecting the Wii Remote to a personal
computer is done via a Bluetooth connection. The Bluetooth program BlueSoleil
has been proven to successfully connect a Wii Remote to a PC. Still another
program (like GlovePIE) is needed to utilize the Wii Remote's protocol and to
use the data it offers.

The Wii Remote Bluetooth protocol can be implemented on other devices including
cell phones, which often have poor usability with games. Two students have
demonstrated this concept by creating a driver software that has the capability
to connect the Wii Remote to a Symbian OS smartphone. The idea behind this
driver is that a mobile phone with a TV-out port can replace the game
console.[7]

Programmer Johnny Lee has posted video demos and sample code at his website
related to the use of the Wii Remote for finger tracking, low-cost multipoint
interactive whiteboards, and head tracking for desktop VR displays. This was
the subject for his presentation at the prestigious TED conference, where he
demonstrated several such applications. The WiimoteProject forum has become the
discussion, support and sharing site for Lee's Wii Remote projects and other
newer developments.

The Wii Remote is also used in fields outside of standard computing. The United
States government has experimented with using it to control Packbot, a bomb
disposal robot.[8] Studies have also been conducted to use the Wii Remote as a
practice method to fine-tune surgeons' hand motions.[9] Utilizing
DarwiinRemote, researchers at the University of Memphis have adapted the Wii
Remote for data collection in cognitive psychology experiments.[10] Autodesk
has released a plugin that allows the Wii Remote to control orientation of 3D
models in Autodesk Design Review.[11]

Re: [TANKS] Re: Where to..

2010-02-26 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Well, I have been a member of the list since sometime in late 2005. Geez,
never
really noticed it had been that long. In that time, I haven't ever seen a
conversation
deteriorate to the point this one has. Most of us are adults (not all -
some are under
the age of 18 and I don't mean that intellectually). Of all the forums and
Email lists I
have been a member of, this one has always been the most civil and free of
crap. For
those of us that have been on the list for a long time, these types of
conversations are
like bad pennies. They just keep showing up. People have big dreams of
innovation
and revolutionizing the hobby, but in the end most of those folks rarely
build a vehicle
that can compete with the current vehicles with all of their antiquated
systems. There
are exceptions to that rule. Doug has actually brought his computerized
monstrosity to
fruition (Doug and I have exchanged parts over the last couple of years so
hopefully he
won't take offense to me calling his backpack a monstrosity). I meant it in
the nicest way. :)
Joe Sommer has built devices for folks (like me) and taken his time and
money to bulk
import motors from China when they weren't readily available (for people
like me - thanks Joe).
I'm definitely not perfect though. I once made on off color comment about
French tanks...boy
was I lambasted about that, but I got over it and just refrained from doing
it again. I also have
3 tanks in the works and none of them are completely operational. All
three of them do run
via remote control (or soon will in the case of the KV-2). Seeing as I live
in MN and no one
else around me has a vehicle near the same level of completion, I've had no
reason to
dedicate all of my time to getting just one fully functional for battle.
Steve, Joe, Frank, John,
and Will have seen many tankers come and go with big ideas. They on the
other hand have all
contributed to the hobby in countless other ways and just because I didn't
mention their achievements
individually doesn't mean that they weren't important (like the
www.cheapcontrolsystems.com
system or all the motor testing Joe has done at his own expense). I think
everyone just got off
on the wrong foot. At this point, it's going to go one of two ways. Either
the parties involved will
apologize for the misunderstandings or they won't. I will say that I don't
believe the public list is
the proper place to have it out. JMHO. How about 'dem Bears?

I think that everyone should just chill and forget this ever happened. It
doesn't matter if you spell color or colour, they are the same word, just
different spelling. I too have never seen conversation deteriorate to this
level before. This group is meant to be for the discussion of remote control
tank combat, not for the discussion of regional spelling differences and a
haven for spelling Nazis.

Anyway. Wiimotes have been used by people as computer mice and to control
USB missile launchers. They are perfectly capable of controlling an RC tank,
as they have built in accelerometers and gyroscopes as well as having an IR
sensor. The IR sensor is only there for synchronising (with no Z) I believe.
Whether or not it would be a good controller is up to debate, as the Wiimote
motion sensing would probably be used for turret aiming, which leaves the
t-pad t control movement. I think the t-pad is digital, unless it is touch
sensitive, like the PS2 controllers, but the touch sensitivity on those
suck.

I would take up the challenge, but since I'm not in the USA, It would be
hard to get the money, plus the system would cost more than $100.

that our little mailing list is not a nice place to visit and that the
people in the list above are just mean people who like putting down every
newbie who comes along. You couldn't be further from the truth.

Now see here Frank. We all know you have that steadily progressing
dementia thing going on and know how you tend to scoff at new ideas
and all. Us vets who know and love you dearly make allowances for
that. For who doesn't love the old coot in the corner when they wane
nostalgic about the good old days and complain about all the
newfangled contraptions in the world? Young Jago doesn't know you and
may take your ramblings more personal than those of us who know
better. Please remember to be civil to the new guys like we've asked
you too do over and over. Would it help if we wrote it on your bib
our something?

Yes, indeed it is fair.  In fact, you should be the first to build such
a control system and bring it to the battlefield.  Equipped with your
advanced arm-mounted control and sensor feedback system you'll probably
beat many rookies and veterans alike who rely solely on their clumsy
thumbs to move accurate joysticks, using nothing but their own eyes as a
feedback system.  How could mere humans even come close to defeating the
far more advanced bionic system you envision?

Hahahaha.. I took him as a grumpy stick in the mud. I tend not to take
offense to people who say things are impossible. I hear that a lot, and
it only convinces me to try that much harder to prove them wrong.

We have a little saying in Massachusetts. Maybe one day you'll get

Hi Jago,

Please allow me to translate Frank's message for you:

You *could* do it but your tank would be a sitting duck for the rest
of us while you were flapping your arms trying to get it to move. :-)

Better yet, look up Cheap Control Systems

Cheers,

Hey,
I'm going to use a traditional controller for the actual movement. I was
just thinking it was a cool concept.
