Loic,

It's great to see the FOA "Battle" Tiger almost battle ready. I'd suggest
starting a new topic for any new posts as "New Business" is getting quite
long.

For those inquiring minds that want to know. The "TT" in TTMS2
Motorization, TTRS2 Rotation, and TTES Elevate of course stands for
TyngTech!

2013-09-05 Thread Loic atFOA

*UPDATE*:

FOA has been silent because we have been busy! We upgraded the ABS Tiger
shown previously to a metal RC Combat tank. Here is the video link
http://youtu.be/iPvXsVnqrqI
This tank includes the MPSS3 Suspension system, TTMS2 Motorization system
at about 1.2 hp, with geared down speeds of 4 mph, TTRS2 Turret Rotation
system giving us about 5 rpm, TTES Elevation system on a "lead screw" fine
tuning design and the Spyder Fenix electronic marker.

We are now sending this tank to the "robotic guys" for a control system
using WIFI and PS2 controller, including a live steam remote camera

The good news (if everything falls into place!) is that I will bring this
tank to the Gettysburg event... and live or die?

Cheers from sunny and warm Utah

1. I tested the Tiger tank in a rough field next to our business. I
ran the tank at full speed at all times:

a. Continuous speed of 6.4 mph for 39 minutes

b. Battery was not fully recharged when I started, because I used the
tank to visitors a couple of times, including running in the field. After
the 39 min, 45% left on battery according to my charger

c. At the end of the 39 minutes, the Tiger was going at about 5.4 mph

d. The tank ran for exactly 4 miles

e. The Talon SR were hot, the right one was slightly hotter to the
touch, but not burning

f.The two MY1018 Motors were VERY hot. Could not put my fingers on
it. It did not burn the plastic wires touching the motors.

g. No apparent mechanical failures: a road wheel shaft is lose in the
middle of the wheels, the right sprocket jumped again the inner guide
tooth, but the tank ran fine in this configuration

h. Turret rotation worked great throughout the experiment. Steve is
designing another version of this rotation, with finer tuning for better
paintball accuracy.

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-06-27 Thread l...@fieldofarmortanks.com
Neil,

Those tracks are amazing to me! They are plastic like the Panther. But we
broke about 6 tracks with the Panther, in 3 days of testing, always at the
same weak area. I think the Tiger tracks are more "flat", wider, and the
pin is smaller (30/1000th of an inch). But those pins are "plastic"
compared to the metal pins on the Panther! I also heard that the Chinese
use recycled plastic to lower their costs, while US injection cie which we
used for the Tiger Tracks use almost all new plastic.

We have not given up on the Panther/Jagdpanther at these high speed/torque.
I will check with our Injection Molded mfg and see if the pins can be
decreased since they are separate from the mold. I'm also interested in
slightly changing the design of the weak point if possible. We might use the
same "plastic pin" as the Tiger, rather than the expensive metal pin!

For the Tiger we did not lose ONE track pad [the reason the Tank stopped
abruptly as it went over that rock, and slammed into the ground, is that it
closed the unattached ON/OFF switch inside the tank]. As I said, the only
issue we have is the double guide tooth going over the left idler [in the
Tiger, the idler is between the two row of guide teeth - in our situation,
the inside guide teeth went IN BETWEEN the two idler wheels, and the
outside one moved further to the outside], which means we need to move that
idler slightly to the outside like we did on the right side. We just cut
the hardened steel a "little too tight".

Steve thinks that the tracks slightly skipping on the sprocket on the high
torque events might not be an issue, and act as a safety to avoid breaking
tracks... This can be addressed by tightening or loosening the tracks.

Now we are waiting for the Elevate system/trigger system from "Tyng Tech"
and we might have a "combat tank"! We also found an outfit with great
Electronic Background in the "Robot Industry" to take our tank and fit it
with the latest electronic controller (not even released to the public
yet...). Those tanks will be able to use Game Controllers.

Time for the HOUR TEST...

Looking very nice Loic. It does look like you need some ballast in the
rear, or a stiffening of the front suspension. That will help smooth out
the nose dive when the tank stopped from running at full speed.

So, will you be ready to come to our battle on Sept 28 and 29? Your
potential overseas market will be in attendance.
Of course, for them you'll need some sort of paper mache parts. LOL.

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-06-20 Thread Frank Pittelli
When there is a noticeable speed difference while spinning right or
left, it could be due to the joystick/mixer settings. Specifically, if
the "center" position of the left-right joystick is slightly to one
side, then the mixer will see the joystick travel more one way then the
other. With an exponential response setting, a small variation near the
travel end-point results in a larger speed variation.

When using the Talon SR, this can be easily confirmed by watching the
LEDs on the speed controls. At 100% throttle, the LED should stay lit
without flashing. So, if the LEDs stay lit when turning in one
direction, but flash rapidly when turning in the other direction you
know that the joystick center is slightly off. Adjust the center (and
deadband if necessary) to balance everything.

I suspect with the FOA Panther, there's probably binding on one side
that is causing the slower spin in one direction.

More than likely the reason is goes faster in one direction than the other
is because the motors have the timing set faster in one direction than the
other. You have one rotated so one is actually running forward all the
time and the other is running backward. The EV Warrior motors were either
CW timed or CCW timed. Those you could open up and actually set them to a
neutral timing so they ran the same speed in both directions. When you do
a neutral turn in the grass, in theory one motor is running forward and the
other is reversing. In your case one of the motors is already reversed so
the reverse of that is forward. In other words, turning one direction both
motors are timed higher running forward and in the other direction, both
motors are timed lower running backwards hence the slower speed. Make
sense? :)

John,
We are not even sure of the actual speed in grass and rough
terrain yet. We are removing the track tension idler because
it gives us more headaches than help!

Also, this tank uses the " old foa tracks and wheels". We
are questioning if those plastic parts will sustain combat
conditions. We will know when the tank is back in SLC with
those 450 W motors. We are experimenting with 250 W motors
as well

our "designed" battle tank will be available this summer
with all engineering resolved

We now have a suspension system, a turret rotation...
Working on elevation, trigger, and some side projects of my
own interest like Steve will test the airsoft engine we
acquired at the show, Benedini sound, smoking exhausts (all
those with little interest to combat crowds!)

Next week I will hone my 27 inch barrel that I just got
tapered! The sound should be loud

Loic

The next battle is scheduled for Sunday, June 23 northwest
of Gettysburg, PA. The morning battle usually starts around 10am and
the afternoon battle starts between 1-2pm. The battle is held at a
private home, so we don't post directions on the mailing list. But if
you send Joe Sommer a private email he'll send you directions and the
GPS coordinates. Always extra assets to be used by newbies of all ages.

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-04-12 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
Yeah, most of the motors we use are in the 300-450W variety. The issue
then is getting a speed controller that is beefy enough to handle the
motors. Those 18AH batteries should be sufficient.

Not yet Neil. The motors are 24V and not powerful enough. no problem
making a 360 on asphalt or concrete. We only reach 2km/hr or 1.3 mph (12
km/hr scale). This tank cruised at 46 km/hr. We are looking into other
motors right now (12V with more amps). Also we are concerned about the
"accurate" Panther tracks which "grooves" might "grab" on the grass on a
360degree turn. That would not be good for plastic tracks. Suggestions and
 critics are welcomed!

Mike and Derek,
Thank you for your input. What "motors" would you advise in the 24V range?
The Panther weighs about 100lbs now, but will ultimately be around 135lbs
range.

I currently have x2 12V Batteries, 18Ah each (Standby use 12.6 - 13.8V,
2.7A, Cycle Use 14.5-14.9V -5.4A).
My motors datasheet shows (for left motor, directly mounted to sprocket -
Right motor is spinner clockwise and performance slightly different):

Data Type Value Range No Load Current (A) 0.9-0.7
Speed (RPM) 116.2-95.1 Stall Load Torque (Nm) 21.3-17.5
Current (A) 13.0-14.7 Peak Power Power (W) 60.0-49.1
Torque (Nm) 11.1-9.1 Nominal Power (W) 36.5 Nominal (Peak Efficiency) Speed
(RPM) 82.1 NominalCurrent (A) 3.5 NominalTorque (Nm) 4.3 Nominal Again,
your input is very helpful!
Cheers from Utah,
Loic

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-03-07 Thread Derek Engelhaupt
I would say that a "stripped" kit (minus detail parts) that included the
upper and lower hulls, turret, road wheels, and suspension would be pretty
ideal. For the suspension, I would love a functional torsion bar type
system that can hold the weight of our tanks. Options could be either
scale tracks or "combat" tracks (table top chain or Intralox type tracks
like Joe's) using some easily obtained (cheap) drive sprockets. Our hobby
is all about the cheap. If it's too expensive, most of us will just build
it ourselves. My KV-2 tracks will outlast the tank by a long shot. They
are model 1864K4.5 from Rexnord. They use a standard 60P sprocket. I have
yet to see it throw a track. JMHO...

2013-03-07 Thread Frank Pittelli
At our scale and power, when running over various types of terrain,
including tall grass, dirt, tree roots, rocks, gravel and mud, we've
learned that tracks with a solid face work best. That is, the track
should be a "plate" (with or without traction grooves/ridges) that
prevents stuff from getting caught. Otherwise, the track will dig into
the ground too much, making it harder to turn and/or jamming/throwing
the track.

As Joe pointed out, we've also learned that a taller, thicker guide
tooth helps to prevent throwing tracks in rough terrain.

Finally, given the sheer abuse we put on vehicles, the track links
themselves (where the pin goes through) need to be thick enough to take
the abuse. If I recall properly (Joe can tell for sure), the Hetzer
(which has been running on plastic tracks for 10 years in heavy
battling) has never broken a track link. So, if you use similar
dimensions (or slightly larger) for your pin/link assembly, with a solid
plate design and taller/beefier tooth, then you should have the
necessary robustness for our hobby. Joe can give you the diameter of
the link through which the pin goes on his tracks.

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-03-07 Thread Frank Pittelli
Joe wins a cigar for hitting the bulls-eye. The minimal "starter" kit
for our hobby would be:

1) Pre-cut, easily assembled lower hull/chassis - you've got that

2) Set of easily assembled road-wheel axles and wheels - you've got that

3) Durable tracks that aren't too expensive - you've almost got that

4) Pair of scooter motors, drive axle and gears - you've got that

With that starter kit, someone could be at the "rolling chassis" point
in a weekend or two. After that, they could decide to purchase
additional sub-systems or finish the vehicle on their own based on
existing construction articles.

Personally, I believe the key to long-term success is ridding yourself
of overly "scaled" parts and designing a more generic (but nice looking)
set of parts that can be used on lots of different vehicles. For
example, most vehicles that have battled use 3/4" thick road-wheels in
only a couple basic diameters. Nobody really cares that tank XYZ
actually had 1/2" thick wheels in scale or that they should be 2.84"
diameter instead of 3", so standard caster wheels are used. Members
need to be able to pick and choose from your parts to build lots of
different lower hull configurations. For example, suppose you offered
the following parts:

1) Road Wheels - resell standard caster wheels in a couple sizes

2) Swing Arms - 3", 4", 5" - all 3/8" axles (1/2" with bushing)

3) Track Links - 3", 4" wide - same spacing and teeth

4) Drive Sprocket - 4"

5) Idler Sprocket - 3", 4"

6) Suspension Mounting Plate - 3, 4, 5 holes for swing arms

With those basic parts, members could build lower hulls for a very large
number of vehicles. Not all, of course, but enough of the popular hulls
to jump-start someone into the hobby.

Other robot sites are starting to sell basic parts for rolling
assemblies, but they are primarily focused on "toy" size vehicles
popular with "in-house" hobbyists. They are either not large enough or
robust enough for "outdoor" hobbyists, which includes way more people
than just our hobby.
