Re: downloading isos

2003-01-24 Thread Billy R Nordyke Sr
Problem appears to be solved. Found out by using the mouse to get the
dropdown box and then typing "c" on the keyboard I could get the url
copied. Started curl and it appears to be downloading nicely. Sorry for
being so stupid.

downloading isos

2003-01-24 Thread Billy R Nordyke Sr
Hi,
It's recommended to use curl to download the isos. It's advised to copy
and paste the "very long url". I can't figure out how to get the url

Re: system security

2002-05-07 Thread Billy R Nordyke

Hi,
I have them connected with ethernet cards and a hub also. On the fast
computers they are netgear cards. Don't have the model right handy. On
the 486 it's a generic 16 bit card. That really doesn't seem to make
much difference. It does seem that keeping the activity on the computer
connected to the internet (I guess gateway box would be correct) may
help. It seems that there should be a way to to get full speed with all
the boxes but I haven't figured that out yet. I'm no expert, self taught
and have more gaps in my knowledge base than anything else.

I've got to go to work now. Will check back over lunch hour.

Re: system security

2002-05-07 Thread Billy R Nordyke

Hi,
I've been using Pegasus Direct satellite internet for a few months now.
As far as I know it doesn't support linux either. I have 3 computers
networked together and receive the satellite transmissions on one with an
AMD Athlon 1.4G processor. The others, one similar to the first dual
boots to RH7.2 and win98. The 2nd is an old IBM Aptiva 486 boosted to
100. Without any manual configuration they receive and send using the
satellite. Only the one with the direct connection to the satellite
receiver gets the full speed of the satellite. The others receive at 20K
or so.

Planned on using the 486 for a firewall, but I can't find a 16 bit
network card that is 10/100 only 10. I didn't know whether that would
slow things down too much or not so haven't tried to setup the satellite
receiver on it yet. All 3 computers dual boot with RH7.2 and win98se.

Re: Hacked again...

2002-05-05 Thread Billy R Nordyke

Am currently running up2date on a fresh install of RH 7.2. Kept running
into the same problem of "authorization required". I was running
#up2date -u and all I had to do was hit either the up or down key, I
think it is the down key and that would bring up the #up2date -u command
and it would run thru the sequence and then begin downloading where it
had stopped before. Finally got smart and ran #up2date up2date and then
copied the up2date file to up2date.old deleted up2date and copied the
up2date.newrpm file to up2date. I used the complete directory with the
commands to be sure nothing got screwed up. It's working like a charm
and haven't seen anymore "authorization required statements.

up2date ssl_connect error

2002-05-04 Thread Billy R Nordyke

Hi All,
Can't get away from the error message ssl_connect error. Tried to fix it
by erasing up2date, up2date-gnome, rhn_register, rhn-register-gnome and
popt and replacing them with up2date-2.7.11-7.x.2.i386.rpm,
up2date-gnome-2.7-11-7.x.2.i386.rpm, rhn_register-2.7.2-7.x.8.i386.rpm,
rhn_register-gnome-2.7.2-7.x.8.i386.rpm and popt-0.8.8-7.x.2.i386.rpm.
Same thing. Somebody said to run fsck and I tried to but shouldn't have.
It warned me the partition was active and I went ahead anyway and RH 7.2
crashed. So I reinstalled RH 7.2 "everything" and I get the same error.
It used to work and I have three other systems that work fine. This
computer is homebuilt as are the others and it's got an AMD Athlon 1.4
gig cpu 2 hard drives, one for windoze and one for linux.

Any suggestions.

Does the linuxconf mailconf work properly with RH 7.2? The FAQs at
sendmail.org say not to use it to edit sendmail.cf with RH 7.1. What is
the proper config program for sendmail? Is it proper to use emacs to
edit sendmail.cf? I have read the man pages for sendmail and have
visited sendmail.org. It doesn't take too much to confuse me. I do
finally have fetchmail working. Does sendmail both send and receive mail
if set up properly?

Hi,
Have made the change in Grub. Added "vga=692 to the bottom of the first
section as below:

title Red Hat Linux (2.4.9-31)
root (as listed, didn't change anything)
kernel (as listed, didn't change anything)
   initrd/initrd-2.4.9-31
   vga=792

How do I bring this up? Do I use startx? I have the framebuffer rpm
installed I think, but it isn't listed in Xconfigurator. When I "locate"
it, I get /etc/X11/XF86_FBDev and /etc/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev. Seems like
I should be able to find some way to get XF86_FBDev listed in
Xconfigurator but can't figure out how now. I 'm pretty sure I've done
something similar before. The framebuffer rpm is
XFree86-FBDev-3.3.6-42.i386.rpm.

Thanks for your help.

rh70 failed to install

Hi Leonard,
I did get rh70 installed and working from disks supplyed with rh7

instaall rh70 on another computer and they worked perfectly.
This evening after I got your message yesterday I tried to install
rh7.0 on the xbill computer. The darned thing hungup again about 23 Megs
from the end on another file, Xfree 86-xdm-4.0.1-1. I didn't alter the
partitions from the installation that worked:
 start end label type
tmp/hda1 2 20 /boot linux
tmp/hda2 21 350 /win98c win95 fat32 LBA
tmp/hda3 651 1247 extended linux
tmp/hda4 351 650 /win98d win95 fat32 LBA
tmp/hda5 12301247 linux swap
tmp/hda6651 1229 /

Tried shutting off the computer and removing the installation disk It
started but hungup as expected, said / wasn't mounted. It's late so I'll
wait until tomorrow to try the other disks from rh7 unleashed again.
Sort of weird.

Re: xbill ?

2001-03-25 Thread Billy R Nordyke

Hi Leonard,

No no error message and all sorts of harddrive space. I am dual booted
to win98 and rh7.0 and had reformatted the harddrive, I think a 15 gig
one, i2 for each and subdivided the win98 to a c and a D drive so I could
back up the win98 on c to d. Seems to work fairlywell for my purposes.
I tried not to disturb the original linux partitions but probably did.
May not be wise but I usually use just three partitions /boot for aboyt
20-39 megs as the very first partition then paartitions for win98 then
a/ partition for everything else except the boot partition. That way I
don't have to guess at the size of the various linux partitions and run
out of space, or so I thought.

being installed began with "xbill" and the message about content read
approximately "program to keep bill from installing os on his computers".
I think I was haacked, but don't quite know when or how. It appears to
me it must be on the installation disc one, but it would have had to be
in the read-write cdrom . This computer didn't have a read-write cdrom.
I did happen to have a set of installaation discs for 7.0 that came with
a book and was able to install 7.0 easily with them.
Any ideas.

Just a note toremind of the difference between upgrade and install.
Install for me wipes everything out, but Upgrade usually works quite
well. Took me a while to figure that out.

Re: Help figuring out a weird UPS problem

2000-07-22 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

Hi,
Unless the telephone line is fiberoptic, lightning can come in on the
phoneline directly into the modem and make a mess of the modem and even
the harddrive etc. I've just had to get rid of a computer to which that
happened. The good part is that household insurance may cover the cost
of the replacement.

Re: /boot partition too big ( 1 MB !!)

2000-06-30 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

Hi Alessandro,

Don't see an answer to your message so I'll try. Try making your linux
boot partition 16 meg or so as the very first partition on the drive.
Then create your windows partition and the linux partition. I t should
work that way. It seems that there is a limit over which linux can't go
back to install. If you can access the archives there have been several
discussions of this by eople much more knowledgeable than I. This
worked for me on a 30 gig harddrive though.

Re:urgent LILO failure:former-to recover damaged partition CLARIFICATION

2000-06-29 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

IMPORTANT!! After the new partition is created and the file system
is written, exit the Installation Program and your RedHat files should
not be disturbed. If you don't exit they will be lost. I've been stuck
and have just turned off the computer at that point and everything seemed
to be ok.
Sorry I didn't say this in the first message.

I'm a novice, but I think if you use your redhat disk and run the install
program until it comes to making partitions, it will
recognize your win98 partition if you use fdisk. Then you can delete
that partition andmake a new partition with a fat flesystem that will be
recognized when you use a rescuedisk to reinstall windows 98. Of course
if you do it this way all of the data on the old win98 partition will be
lost.
Hope this helps,

Re: ethernet commands

2000-05-28 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

Thanks to everybody. I have 2 amdk62 450 boxes and an old lightning
struck aptiva 510 boosted to about 75. On one 450 I have a 12 gig
ide with w98 and an eight gig drive with RH 6.1 on it. On the other
450 I have a 30 gig ide with both win98 and RH 6.1 on it. On the
aptiva ( which I figure on setting up as a firewall box) there is a 15
gig harddrive with win98 and Rh 6.1 both on it. All of the machines
dualboot to linux and win98 and are
connected by ethernet in both linux and win98.
What I'm trying to do is learn how to setup the networks and
firewalls and to use samba.
Really I'm trying to learn as much about linux as I can. My
programming skills are limited. Just have basic and advanced basic as
formal courses and have gone thru the tutorials in microsoft c and
symantec c++ a couple of times. I started with linux about a year ago
but have no formal training.
Took a home study computer repair course a few years ago and
ended up building
all these computers.
Thanks,
 Bill

Re: using ethernet

2000-05-26 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

Thanks for your help. Finally have two boxes at least pinging each
other. I don't know how to use the connection yet but it seems its
there.

Really I'm playing. I'm trying to set up a 3 or 4 box lan in both
win98 and rhlinux. Eventually I have an old 486 boosted to 75 with 24
Megs mem and a 15 gig harddrive that I want to set up as a firewall
just to see if I can do it. Also I want to set up samba so I can
utilize the win98 setups too. That box is an old aptiva 510 that got
hit by lightning so it has a few quirks but seems to work fairly well.

I do have a question. What do I need to do to get netscape to find my
internet connection?
I t used to work but now it cant find the connection. Too longwinded
tonight,

Thanks,

using ethernet

2000-05-22 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

Think I have the ethernet almost working. At least there's activity on
the eth0 window in one computer when I'm trying to connect.
Where do I find information on how to use the ethernet connection?
Haven't figured out the keywords to find man pages or help.

TIA

joystick not found

Thanks, Still have problems though.  Do think
the drivers are compiled  nowthough.  Ran make and make modules in
/usr/src/linux and then it seemed thatthose commands would work in the
joystick directory.But when trying to run  ./jstest /dev/js0 I
get  "No such file or directory. When I emacs (don't know how to use vi)
jstest there is code in the emacsscreen.  The faq in the joystick
documentation says that you need to runmake devs in this case which I
already had.  Re ran it and the devices allseem to appear
properly.Ran kernelcfg and until I goofed it up it appeared joy-analog was
installedand I edited the parameters to read js_an=0x201,0x003b,0
except for thelast 0 which may be wrong the 0x201 matches the setting
inwin98 and 0x003bis what's listed for the m value in the documentation
.Tried insmod joydump.o and it seemed to work as per the documentation
butI'm not sure where the system log is.  Could only find blank files
where Ilooked.Hope you can help. Thanks for trying. Thanks,

I know it's a basic procedure but can't figure out how. I'm trying to get
the joystick going in RedHat 6.1 and have updated the kernel to
2.2.14-6.0.1. I've found the various files that need to be compiled but

1:compiling modules and 2:activating ethernet lan

2000-05-19 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

I'd very much appreciate if any one would detail
how to compile modules.  I know it's a basic procedure but can't figure
out  how.  I'm trying to get the joystick going in RedHat 6.1 and have
updated the kernel to 2.2.14-6.0.1. I've found the various files that need
to be compiled but don't know the procedure.

Also I need help on activating the ethernet lan.
I've got 3 computers with win98 and linux dualbooted on each and connected with
an ethernet lan that works with win98.

Thanks in advance.

compiling joystick modules and seting up ethnet

2000-05-18 Thread Billy R. Nordyke Sr.

I'm running RedHat 6.1 and have upgraded the Kernel
to 2.2.14-6.0.1 The joystick files are 2.2.12-20
files.  I don't know how to compile them into an executable
program.

Also I have a small ethernet lan setup to learn
from that works well with win98.  The 3 computers on the net all dualboot
to linux and win98.

I need help in configuring them. When the linux
boots they all say ethnet is ok but I havn't got them communicating
yet.

Any help will be very much
appreciated.
