Apples and oranges. Most if not all Windows traceroute clients use icmp whereas most
*nix traceroute clients use udp unless you tell it to use icmp.

FWIW, I have a Linksys router/firewall also and saw the same
symptoms as you. Using the -I switch on traceroute allows it to
work from Linux. As the a previous poster mentioned, this will
force traceroute to use ICMP instead of the default in Linux UDP
packets.

The warning is due to the fact your /boot is going to be above
cylinder 1024. Provided your computer BIOS can support booting
(i.e. LBA mode) above this cylinder then recent versions of lilo
and grub can work in this situation.

For lilo you would need a line in lilo.conf that says lba32.

For grub it is supposed to be able to automatically determine if
you BIOS supports LBA and hence allow you to make use of your
whole disk.

Your mileage may vary

With up2date already installed and configured you would need to

Maybe I am wrong but it seems that this is what happened to me before..

It's shortened because 'hostname' is executed in /etc/profile:
 HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`

/bin/hostname shows the fully qualified name on machines
configured with a fully qualified name.

[jft@zx750 jft]$ /bin/hostname
zx750.tadlocks.net

So in /etc/profile the line:

HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`

is actually setting the HOSTNAME variable to the fully qualified
name.

The way the default bash prompt looks is determined from
/etc/bashrc , note this line:

PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne \033_${USER}@${HOSTNAME%%.*}:${PWD/#$HOME/~}\033\\'

The part in we are concerned with is ${HOSTNAME%%.*}

This takes the HOSTNAME variable (set in /etc/profile) and then
drops everything after the first '.'.

Example:

[jft@zx750 jft]$ echo ${HOSTNAME%%.*}
zx750

and this is what you see in the bash prompt.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need to enable DMA for your DVD drive.

First you will need to edit /etc/modules.conf and add the
following line:

options ide-cd dma=1

Then you will either need to remove the module and reload it
(rmmod ide-cd and then modprobe ide-cd) or reboot.

Then check to see if DMA is enabled on the drive:

# hdparm -d device name

If it is not enabled run the following:

# hdparm -d 1 device name

Then try playing the DVD again. It should be much better.

to walk even a non-computer user through these commands.

Or, if the machine has a network connection have the user try

# tail /var/log/messages | mail -s logs [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then just wait for the email to arrive which may provide you with
additional insight.

At least this way you may get a bit more information as to what

You need to add a line to your modules.conf as follows:

options ide-cdrom dma=1

Then you need to reload hte ide-cdrom module so the changes in
modules.conf take affect. You could do 'rmmod ide-cdrom'
followed by 'modprobe ide-cdrom' or simply reboot.

Then enter your hdparm command again and it should be fine.

Re: Accessing the internet through MS Proxy Server 2

No way to turn that off?

It has been a long time since I have worked with MS Proxy Server
2.0. By default it does want to use NTLM to authenticate you,
but I also believe you can allow it to use Basic authentication
which would allow Mozilla, Netscape, etc to work with the Proxy
Server.

I think to change this on the Proxy Server you have to make the
configuration change under the default web site in IIS and check
off Basic as an authentication type.

There's no way the original poster can use an MS proxy server on Linux?

The above steps should allow a non-MS web browser to work through
the MS Proxy Server. One thing to keep in mind though is that
other non-web based services need the MS Proxy client to be able
to use the Proxy service for access to the Internet. (this
includes telnet, ssh, smtp, etc.). There is not a Proxy Client
for non-MS machines.

If the original poster must use an MS product then one could
upgrade to MS ISA Server which allows clients on the local LAN to
become NAT clients bypassing the need for a Proxy client.

I myself would replace the MS Proxy server with a Red Hat box
with IP Masquerading and Squid. In the end it allows a much more
tuneable config.

Hope this helps!

A couple of things could be happening.

--Default security settings are blocking access to port 23 (telnet).

--Telnet server is not installed. To check:

rpm -qa | grep telnet-server

If that does not show you telnet-server then you do not have it
installed. You can install it from the CD's by using the RPM.

--Telnet server installed, but not running. To turn it on type
the following:

/sbin/chkconfig telnet on

With all of this having been said if you do not have a reason to
use telnet, I highly suggest using ssh. Telnet sends information
across the wire in plain text whereas with ssh the session is
encrypted. From a *nix box just type ssh and then the name of
your Red Hat 8.0 box. From a Windows box just do a search on
putty at Google and download it to your Windows box. This tool
will allow you to ssh to your Red Hat box.

When it works, everything works great. When it stops, I can't ping
anything except the local IP address (not even my direct connected
router). The only way I can clear it is to /etc/rc.d/init.d/network
 stop, then start.

When the problem happens, the network card doesn't appear down, but
stopping and restarting makes it work correctly. I've verified all the
DNS and routing information. This is a DHCP box, so it's getting many
of the network settings from the DHCP server (there are two other linux
machines on the same network that work fine).

 Anybody seen anything like this?

I have the same laptop and am running RedHat 8.0 also. I
experienced the exact same behavior as you described. Apparently
there is an issue with the power management of that particular
NIC. Here is what I did to resolve the issue.

First download the eepro100 diag utility from the following site:

http://www.scyld.com/diag

Once you have it you need to compile it (the commands are given
at the bottom of the C source code).

Once you have the resulting binary file named eepro-diag, run it
with the -ee option. This shows the details of the eeprom. When
it reports back it will most likely say Sleep mode is enabled
and give you the switches necessary to disable it (-G 0 -w -w
-f). Once you run the diag tool with those switches you will
need to cold boot the computer to make the changes take affect.

You can probably find some additional information by searching
http://groups.google.com on 'eepro100: wait_for_cmd_done
timeout'. Or look at a brief blurb here:

http://www.tux.org/hypermail/linux-eepro100/2002-Jun/0064.html

Hope this helps!
