RH 8.0 Personal: licensing issues
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen: We want to mount a computer to give internet access to 35 Windows workstations in our office. Can we do this with RH8.0 Personal Edition? Of course we know the tools are there, but we are concerned about the licensing issues. As we do not require the high end features of a server version, we can not justify to buy it. Re: Alternates for office environment WAS: Running OutlookXPOn Linux...
I have found a good strategy to make the transition to OpenOffice is to keep Office working for some months, saving the docs by default in not-Office standards, such as rtf for word docs. You may then try installing OpenOffice for Window$ for some other months, and finally make the switch to Linux desktops running OpenOffice for Linux. That's how we are doing the shift here. Re: OpenOffice/MS Office compatibility (was Re: easy installation)
Well, I have had problems with complex files all from Excel, Word and PP. A common problem are tables of content in Word docs. As we are thinking about the transition from MS to Linux, we are setting up our Office software to save all next year docs in more compatible formats. For instance, Word is set up to save by default in rtf format. So, for 2004, we will be able to change to a Linux compatible office suite and reduce the document problems in about 75%. I would distinguish between various engineering disciplines. In the world of electronics, there seems to be a strong trend towards Linux. Yes, you are right. I believe that is because electrical and electronic engineers are more fond to programming than people from other eng. fields. You also find interesting amounts of software for chemistry. Right now I am looking for process simulation software to simulate construction operations, and guess what... I haven't found really anything, yet. Out of interest: What programs are used for EDA (e.g. schematic capture, PCB layout, etc.)? Last time I checked (which is a while ago), there didn't seem to be that much out there... There are plenty of tools. My last contact with electronics was about two years ago, but I recall SPICE being an excellent analysis tool, and there was a graphical front end for X. I believe there was a software called exactly PCB for such purpose. DIA can work for schematics. Re: wine in general (my 2 cents)
Is Window$ a necessary evil??? Unfortunately, so far, for Engineering applications, I think so. Regarding this thread, my opinion is as follows: -Excel is the best spreadsheet when it comes to advanced uses. QPro was great, but it can be considered mostly dead. StarOffice works wonderfully for regular office work, but it is not well documented for advanced apps. -There is no substitute for M$ Project. It is the best PM software available for PC. There are UNIX PM programs, but they can only be afforded by BIG corporations. Mr. Project may become a serious option, but so far it is not. -AutoCAD still runs only on Window$. Yes, I bought VariCAD, but documentation was SO BAD (I can tell for the English version), that I considered that investment a complete lost. -Linux has outstanding free software for mathematical, programming and data handling applications. -Yes, if there were reliable and functional, well documented software available, at a reasonable price, A LOT of people would be willing to pay for it. Best choice for professionals: place as much memory on your laptop as you can afford, buy VMWare, and run Windows in a VC were you can run whatever Window$ software you require. The question would be, why should I run Linux, then? Well, I can think of some reasons: a) system stability, b) availability of system tools, 3) lots of available high quality software for certain uses, such as compilers, batch processing, and mathematics, 4) flexibility. And, 5) if Window$ hangs, you just have to close the Window!! Re: Why are IDE drives so much slower in Linux?
Just for the records, SCSI cards have their own processors to handle disks I/O while IDE drives are handled by the computer main processor(s). SCSI is just like outsourcing the drives management. So, when running processor intensive applications such as mathematical applications, the difference between SCSI and IDE tech is notorious, but this difference is not so noticeable with database processing. When I used a 486 as my main computer, I used SCSI and divided swap into multiple small dedicated drives, so I could improve system performance dedicating the microprocessor to what it is supposed to do. You definitely want to use the latest errata kernel for your distribution, if you're not. If the problem is that you're swapping excessively, it's probably related to the VM in your kernel more than the IDE disks. slowly than when we execute the same sort of operations in WIndows machines (Matlab, for example), and orders of magnitude slower than the machines that have SCSI drives. The IDE machines grind almost to a halt, whereas the SCSI ones fly through the operations, and the Windows+IDE machines do just fine. I'd be very inclined to believe that your SCSI machines have a great deal more RAM, and swap less. I know that SCSI is inherently faster than IDE There tends to be a greater throughput when using multiple devices, because SCSI can do command reordering for optimization, as well as multiple outstanding commands to distinct devices. It's faster when you have more than one device per channel. However, in the case of one device per channel, as you will find on 3ware RAID products, for instance, performance may be just as good as with SCSI products. and the Linux/Unix have been developed with SCSI in mind. No they haven't. But, isn't there a way to optimize the system so that it uses the IDE drives more efficiently? Any hints? I, and everyone around me would sure appreciate them. 1: Update your kernel 2: Check your DMA settings: /sbin/hdparm /dev/hda 3: Turn on DMA in /etc/sysconfig/harddisks if it's not enabled. -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:redhat-list-request;redhat.com?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:redhat-list-request;redhat.com?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Re: SRPMS
The rpms that are architechture independent have noarch somewhere in their names. Compilers are in charge of matching your source with the actual architecture you have, so you do not necessarilly have to learn architecture specific code, and you achieve high portability. But, some processes are better performed if you make routines in machine language and use the best capabilities of your hardware, and if you use them, then your programs become hardware dependent. A good example is Linux itself. It exploits the characteristics of 32 bit processors, but it wont work in 8 or 16 bit processors. So Linux for INTEL is dependent on the processor family. I've done all the configuration I can. The printer is an Epson Stylus 500. I notice there seems to be a lot of postings about this on the Lixux newsgroup. Replies often state that there is a known bug in 6.1 which affects printing. However, I tried installing 6.0 instead, with no success. The standard responses to the problem are to either upgrade the modutils rpm (I tried this, and ended up with no sound either), or to add the line alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc to /etc/conf.modules. This had no effect either. I can't tell if the modem problem is related. The serial ports appear during installation. However, I can't get minicom to respond. the modem is a Hayes Accura 366000. On the other hand, Linksys's own web site just said PCI. 2) Processor upgrades - I cannot afford to turn this old machine into a new system with a replacement motherboard and processor. I can, however, afford one of the processor replacement upgrades (e.g. from 486DX2-66 to P133MMX). Do such upgrades really work (understanding they won't bring things completely up to date)? More importantly, will they work with Linux? Thanks! Re: How small is small?
Hi Kerry! I am running RH 5.2 in a 486/66 with 16 MB of RAM, 400 MB HDD, and I am using X with icewm (runs fast enough). Couple of suggestions: instead of using one swap partition, make two -half size each- one on each drive. Modify your /etc/inittab so you have only two virtual consoles instead of the default 6. Recompile the kernel to make it smaller and faster. Use ntsysv to remove the services you wont be needing. -Manuel. Re: processor category ?
Hi Philippe! Nice hard one. First of all, your AMD and Intel are different factories with different processors and different technologies. So, your question is like asking what model of a BMW is this model of Mercedes. Here's what I read: The AMD-K6 is a high performance six generation processor that is physically installable in a P5 (Pentium) motherboard. K6-2 adds higher clock speed, bus speeds up to 100 MHz (Super7 design MBs), and 3DNow. AMD K6 is fully x86 binary code compatible, and its L1 cache is twice that of PII and PIII, to compensate for the lower L2 cache performance of the socket 7 design. So, the AMD-K6 delivers performance levels somewhere between the Pentium and Pentium II processor due to its unique hybrid design. On RedHat installation guide (5.2) it reads that if you want to recompile your kernel for a Cyrix or AMD, you should use a processor type of 386. -Manuel. Re: hardware testing
Hi Charles!!! If you are really into Hardware, you may want to take a look at "Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Linux Edition" from Mueller (QUE). It comes with a bootable CD with a Debian distribution that let you make diagnostics and other sort of things. On the other hand, there is a tool you may want to try "info" in KDE control center. It has information about the IRQs and DMAs and other important info on setting up hardware. This other is not on any hand, but in my neck, as some guys on the list will try to kill me for the comment. But, when I have had serious hardware configuration problems, I make a basic Win98 install. Win diagnostic software is better. Once I have my system with no errors under Winblows, and I have no conflicts, I can repartition my drive and reinstall Linux with the settings I already know. RE: preventing data loss from power outage
Hi Chip! Bad news... you have power flickering, a surge supressor is USELESS. Diodes on your surge protector are designed for instant peeks of current, and we are talking of milliseconds here. So don't rely on this to protect your equipment form the power flickering. Good news: you can use a power regulator, instead. It is a kind of transformer in 1:1 relation where you input 120 volts and you get 120 volts in the output. What's special about that? Well, you have inductive forces that always oppose to change. If power goes instantly up, then inductive forces make an effect on the secondary winding of the transformer that try to keep the voltaje as closer as 120 V in the output. A similar effect happens when your input voltage goes down. I've seen voltaje regulators for about $50 in computer stores. -Manuel. -Mensaje original- De: Chip Rose. RE: [OT] Dell and Gateway selling Linux-based Net boxes?
Hey, you know, the mass-market Linux PC vendors of the future might actually have an easier time of things than MS tech support, if they ship their machines with a "safe" user account, and bury the root password in the documentation. The knowledgeable user can find what he needs quickly in the docs, and the novice won't break anything, since they won't read the manual anyway. =) Just my opinion here. Wouldn't it be possible to transfer all the software to the servers and make just dial-up boxes, that run the software in the servers? Less things to be crashed by the user that way, less resources needed by the user box that makes it a cheaper one, and service calls would be transferred to the service provider who knows how the system works and how to fix it... Printing problems with RH 6.0.
Dear friends: I have a HP laserjet series II that I just connected to my RH 6.0 box. Kernel has not been modified or recompiled (just as out from the box). I have set the input filter as laserJet IId/IIp/III* with TIFF compression, which is described as "Driver for the Laserjet II series printer". Printing options were set as follows: -Send EOF after job to eject page. -Fix stair stepping text. -Fast text printing (non-PS printers only). -Suppress Headers. Problem is that when I try printing postscript to my printer, it prints like washed to the left side. It looks just like a code bar sticker. Some text can be read from this printout, but letters got cut as in slices and each slice slides a little bit from the one under and over it. Here is what I have done so far: *I used lptest | lpr to test the hardware. Worked fine. *I issued the command ls -a lpr. Printing quality is fine, but I get an output as follows: 0m01;34m.0m 01;34m..0m 0m.Beirute.index0m 0m.C++.index0m 0m.VIM.index0m [...] And all following files print with a 0m just before the filename and a 0m just after it. Some files have a different code rather than 0m, such as 01;34m.xauth0m. I then made the printout to a file. Using "less" to look at the file, I get the same weird codes. Using "more" to look at the files, I see the output I want, just the plain filenames with no codes. *I went back to printtool, and tried printing the test pages. ASCII test page worked fine. PS test page print blurred int the way I described before. I tried printing a kmail message, and printout was blurred just as PS. *I read that on some printers you have to use the headers, so I tried deselecting the "supress headers option". Printer did not print in ASCII nor in PS. *I tried using the HP LaserJet filter instead than the HP LaserJet IId/.. , and ASCII printed fine, kmail printout was fine, and PS printed, BUT, after the 1/3 of the PS test page was printed, page was ejected, and I got an "ERROR" message in the printer display. I pushed the "continue" button, and the next 1/3 of the page was printed, and page was ejected again, and got another "ERROR" message appeared. After pressing the "continue" button once more, the last third of the page was printed. Then I got PS with an excellent print quality, but 1/3rd of the printout on a different page. *I tried the printer with a Win98 box, and Word documents and graphs printed fine. *I tried printing a PS page from Ghostview within Linux, and printing locked. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. Best regards, -Manuel. -- Manuel A. Camacho Q. Refrigeracion Industrial Beirute, S.A. San Jose, Costa Rica. Phone: (506)233-4222. Fax: (506)222-3570. Re: hardware upgrade question -- new drive
Dear Daniel, here's another "non-programmer" using Linux for fun!!! =) I need to get a bigger hard-drive. Also, I was hoping to upgrade from redhat 4.2 to redhat 6.1 or whatever the latest release is. I also need to install windows 98 on the new hard-drive--for work-related purposes. I have several questions. 1) How do I do this and still access the old drive? Got this from a previous message. Got it for my records: "Adding a disk to an EXISTING setup: 1. Log in single user mode, so you can mount and unmount what is needed. 2. Make a temporary mount point, say /temp (mount -t ext2 /dev/hd?? /temp). 3. Make an entry in fstab for it (/dev/hd?? /usr/local/games ext2 defaults 1 2). 4. Umount /temp. 5. Mount /usr/local/games. 6. Reboot. 7. Done. If you want to move to the 2nd disk the entire /usr directory, make the appropiate adjustments to the above. Once done, you can rmdir /temp directory." I have not done this yet. Hope it works for you. 2) What's the best way to install windows and redhat 6.1 on a drive? I have no idea how to do this. Windows first and then redhat, or the other way around? If what you want to do is to install RH 6.1 and windows in your new drive, you can keep RH 4.2 in the drive you already have. Windows should be mounted before Linux. I have installed win/linux drives, but never with a previous linux install I want to keep. What I would try for doing this is to remove LILO from my MBR first. Then I would remove my actual drive and install the new one. I would install Windows, and then the new version of Linux. Once LILO is installed in the new drive, I would connect the old drive and make a new stanza in lilo.conf, so I could boot either Win, Linux1 or Linux2. Don't trust me. I haven't done this yet and I don't know if it would really work. I would experiment this at my own risk! Anyway, other guys with more experience can help. If it was my system, I would repartition and reinstall Win and new Linux only. I would make a couple of swap partitions of 64 MB, one on each drive, which is supposed to give you a better performance. I would try also to install my two most active partitions/directories in different drives, to split head work ( I am planning buying a couple of SCSI cheapo drives to do this and improve the performance of my 486/66 box ). You can also share the new swap partitions between Linux and Windows. On the other hand, I would install RH 6.0 instead of RH 6.1. I have read about so many install problems, that I decided keeping 6.0 until 6.2 release (I will wait a couple of weeks after official release to try it). 3) I'm looking for a fairly large drive. Any suggestions as to brands? When I have asked same thing, I have got the following: "look for recognized brands". You can read the specs and decide by yourself. I guess it depends mostly on what you want to do. If you are a amateur user as I am, the top of the line drive in speed and performance (usually the most expensive one) is not the best option. Sometimes a slower drive, with a reasonable ( outlet =) ) price could do the job as well. What I guess would be a good advice is to look for technology that your other hardware could accept with no pains. 4) Anything else I need to know? Pointers to partitioning info for a larger drive, etc. There are HOWTO's about all you are asking. If you have specific questions after reading them, there is plenty of knowledgeable guys in the list to help. 5) I also want to install more ram. I know I have to do something to make linux register the larger ram, but what? If you do a fresh install, it will recognize memory automatically. I *guess* that even if you just install it, Linux will very probably get to recognize it. Let's say it doesn't. If, for instance, you are using 32 MB but only 16 are recognized, at the LILO prompt type: LILO: linux mem=32M After the machine boots, use the free command to see if the larger amount of memory was recognized by the kernel. If so, you can add an append line to the /etc/lilo.conf file and rerun lilo to make it happen permanently. The example could be as follows: boot=/dev/sda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt timeout=10 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.32 label=linux root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.0.32.img read-only append="mem=32M" Do not forget to run lilo after editing the file. (This info was taken from a FAQ). That's it. Thanks for any help. Just hope this all works! =) Best regards, -Manuel. -- Manuel A. Camacho Q. Refrigeracion Industrial Beirute, S.A. Re: Printing problems with RH 6.0.
Thanks! I will try that tomorrow! =) On Sun, 07 Nov 1999, Hanigan Family wrote: Hi I don't know if this will be of any help, but when I was at corels site a month or so ago they talked about having some print drivers you might check it out for a better filter. [OT] HP LaserJet Series II
Dear friends: I was handled a LaserJet series II, which I am trying to make print under Linux 6.0. After printing the self test pages of the printer, I tried to make linux work with it unsuccesfully. I then moved the printer to a Win 98 box, loaded the drivers, but printing failed, too. As I used two different Centronics parallel cables on each box, and one of them was new, so I believe the problem is actually on the printer side. I am trying to print on LPT1 (where I am actually printing with other printers). I have no manual for the printer. There are some DIP switches on the back of the LaserJet. I hope it is a misconfiguration of them what is causing trouble. I would appreciate if anyone of you could be so kind of telling me where can I find a LaserJet II manual on-line (I already tried HP website...) or if you can tell me how to configure the DIP switches on the printer's back. Thank you very much in advance for your always valuable help. Best regards, -Manuel. -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.
