i broke down and rebooted the machine (much to my chagrin) and rpm seems
to be fine now. what would cause this?

RE: How to start KDE

2002-04-16 Thread Jack Wallen, Jr.

i use this script:

#! /bin/bash

case "$1" in

gnome)
 echo 'exec gnome-session' > ~/.xinitrc
 ;;

kde)
 echo 'startkde' > ~/.xinitrc

*)
echo $"chose either gnome or kde"
 exit 1

esac

startx

exit 0

 end script

put that in the user directory, call it switcher (or something), chmod u+x
it, and run ./swither kde or ./switcher gnome.

you could also put it in /usr/bin i supppose.

hope that helps.

i'm sure i'll get flamed for something. ;-)

overly large /var/log/messages

2001-01-19 Thread jack wallen, jr

my hard drive is failing (running Red Hat 7.0) and last night i discovered
it making the insidious 'clicking sound' only when trying to log to
/var/log/messages or /var/log/secure. when i took a look at messages i
discovered it had grown to over 11 gigs (don't ask me how) and i couldn't
read then end of the file (obviously). someone had hit me 5 times per
second for nearly 12 hours! i'm assuming this might have to do with the
ramen worm. anyway...i simply removed both messages and secure and
'touched' new files in their places.

could this physical error be due to the oversized file (and the attempts
to write to it)?

Re: Urgent LILO failure: former - to recover damaged partition

2000-06-30 Thread jack wallen jr

if you can use a windows boot disk you can get to an prompt and type fdisk
mbr which will return your master boot record to the original 'windows'
version. if you do this you'll have to use a boot floppy to boot linux
(of course i'm sure you can get lilo back onto the mbr).

see what you said.

:I'm a novice, but I think if you use your redhat disk and run the install
:program until it comes to making partitions, it will recognize your win98
:partition if you use fdisk. Then you can delete that partition andmake
:a new partition with a fat flesystem that will be recognized when you use
:a rescuedisk to reinstall windows 98. Of course if you do it this way
:all of the data on the old win98 partition will be lost.

nope, once you run the rpm you have to go to /boot and take the new entry,
vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0, and change it's corresponding entry in
/etc/lilo.conf. then rerun lilo and your gold.

see what you said.

i'm currently doing an article on this very topic. it seems that the
subject has been bantered back and forth among the interested parties and
now the gov't of china is saying that it never said this. what it does
seem is that they may 'encourage' the gov't to use domestic
softwares...but who knows. that's the biggest problem and the biggest
difference bewtween the Linux and Windows communities - the Linux
community always knows what is going on and the MS Windows community does
not.

there is certainly something to be said about knowing the truth.

RE: Which Modem?

1999-12-01 Thread jack wallen jr

external modems are just more reliable (well, except that darn Viking
modem). pluse they have an on/off switch that allows you to manually
'pull the plug' if there are problems - so you don't end up having to
reboot your machine (coming from much experience there).

Re: 6.1 Problems

coming into this late but the sysconfig/ipcfg error is indicative (to me)
of someone trying to use /sbin/ifup ppp0. in 6.1 this will not work. you
have to use the wvdial tool.

dual boot question

1999-11-17 Thread jack wallen, jr.

hey everyonei'm wondering:

the Linux+Win95 mini howto says the following:

"With a Linux/Win9x installation It is VERY IMPORTANT that your Linux
partition start before (below) the 1024th cylinder, otherwise you will be
unable to boot the machin. What exactly is the 1024th cylinder? That's
where IDE ends and EIDE begins-- that's the 528M "mark" on your hard disk.
Start your Linux partition at around 520M, so the entire kernel and other
boot/loader files will completely reside below that cylander."

has this changed with the newer releases of Red Hat or the newers kernels?
the reason i ask is that i've done many successful Red Hat+Win9x dual
boots where Linux resides well beyond the 528M "mark" (unless i'm
misunderstanding this information). if i'm clueless on this 'mark' could
someone set me straight?

thanks to all.

6.1 broken printer

1999-11-15 Thread jack wallen, jr.

after a year of using my hp 5l printer with Red Hat i finally managed to
find a release of RH that would stop it from working. i just did a fresh
install of 6.1 and ran printtool (cause the graphical install doesn't ask
you if you want to install a printer) to set it up as i always did. well,
after it was setup i ran a test (as i always did) and recieved no output!

has anyone else expienced this little problem? is there a known fix for
this?

thank you kindly

I know my ISP needs PAP authentication - could this be the problem - and
if so, how do i go about fixing it? when i used netcfg to put this all
together it allowed for PAP.

any help would be greatly appreciated. i'm trying to write this up on
TechRepublic (the covert Red Hat 6.1 bug) but won't do so until i have a
solution to offer my readers (unless there is no solution - then i'll just
have report that fact).

thanks again everyone.

an interesting bug in 6.1

1999-11-09 Thread jack wallen, jr.

has any come across red hat 6.1 totally rendering a external modem
useless? last night my modem's (connected to ttyS0) speaker went dead and
then would no longer connect. when i checked i found that i was getting
an error that it could not activate /sysconfig/ifcfg-ppp

i ended up re-installing but a fresh install did the same thing. then i
loaded up 6.0 and the problem was solved.

if anyone has come across this problem, and knows of a solution, i'd much
appreciate it.
