Re: Urgent LILO failure: former - to recover damaged partition
if you can use a windows boot disk you can get to an prompt and type fdisk mbr which will return your master boot record to the original 'windows' version. if you do this you'll have to use a boot floppy to boot linux (of course i'm sure you can get lilo back onto the mbr). see what you said. :I'm a novice, but I think if you use your redhat disk and run the install :program until it comes to making partitions, it will recognize your win98 :partition if you use fdisk. external modems are just more reliable (well, except that darn Viking modem). pluse they have an on/off switch that allows you to manually 'pull the plug' if there are problems - so you don't end up having to reboot your machine (coming from much experience there). dual boot question
hey everyonei'm wondering: the Linux+Win95 mini howto says the following: "With a Linux/Win9x installation It is VERY IMPORTANT that your Linux partition start before (below) the 1024th cylinder, otherwise you will be unable to boot the machin. What exactly is the 1024th cylinder? That's where IDE ends and EIDE begins-- that's the 528M "mark" on your hard disk. Start your Linux partition at around 520M, so the entire kernel and other boot/loader files will completely reside below that cylander." has this changed with the newer releases of Red Hat or the newers kernels? the reason i ask is that i've done many successful Red Hat+Win9x dual boots where Linux resides well beyond the 528M "mark" (unless i'm misunderstanding this information). if i'm clueless on this 'mark' could someone set me straight? thanks to all. an interesting bug in 6.1
has any come across red hat 6.1 totally rendering a external modem useless? last night my modem's (connected to ttyS0) speaker went dead and then would no longer connect. when i checked i found that i was getting an error that it could not activate /sysconfig/ifcfg-ppp i ended up re-installing but a fresh install did the same thing. then i loaded up 6.0 and the problem was solved. if anyone has come across this problem, and knows of a solution, i'd much appreciate it. Looking for writers
Hello Red Hat fans, I work for TechRepublic and I'm looking for content authors. We pay .25 cents per word for in-depth articles on various topics and I'm here to recruit writers of Linux content. I'm looking for people to write about various topics such as: Red Hat Linux - or any distro SQL (in any of it's forms) Enterprise Linux Development Linux Networking System Admin with Linux and any other topic I can come up with along the way. These articles need to be in-depth and technical in nature. If anyone is interested in actually making some cash off their Linux knowledge e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll talk. Thank you all and sorry if this is off topic (but I've trolled around the Red Hat List for a long time and know that the knowledge here is very strong).
