[Repeater-Builder] Zetron Model 38 Manual

I have misplaced our Zetron 38 manual and cant remember for the life
of me how to program this thing. Dose anyone have a copy in .pdf they
could e-mail me? or a photocopy of an original would work too (I would
be willing to pay for copying postage)

All help is appreciated

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Crossband Simplex Repeater

2004-05-31 Thread Mike Perryman
I have a 605TQ that I sometimes run cross-band during emergency services
events... that way I can use a VX-5 on it's lowest power setting (to
extend battery life) remotely to the car, and it works great. Very simple
to setup.. just set the VFO's for the desired freq's... power
down... then power up while depressing the primary VFO button. Only for
70cm to 2m, or vice versa. The 605 will go out of band... but not a good
idea to do so, as it is not type accepted for that kind of use. I also
would not recommend it for continuos duty. They 605 gets pretty warm in
heavy use... fans might solve the heat issue. But I think 2 Moto's and a
R.I.C.K. would be a much better choice for dependability.

What, exactly, did you have in mind?

TCB-1 Tactical Communications Bridge to connect two radios together.
Motorola offers several cross-band repeaters that comprise a R.I.C.K.

interfaces two radios such as the GM300, M1225, SM50/120, or CDM750.

You can use a simplex repeater controller such as Zetron's Model 19B

Keep your remote base TX output as low as you can. Try

[Repeater-Builder] Re: micor squlch gate card problem?? help please

2004-05-31 Thread ve1aic
Randy the sq gate mod usually takes COS from Q18 the transistor that
does audio muting. (At front/middle of the card near JU10)
Its a general purpose NPN M9642, you can pull one from an old card or
probably try 2N3904 etc to get it going..not sure on the sub. You can
check the operation of this transistor with a VOM on jumper J10. This
should be around 12v sq'd and near 0v when unsquelched. You can also
check to see if the card's squelch circuit is working by checking
board pin 9 which should be about 8v sq'd and near 0v unsquelched.

WP-641 duplexer is rated at 85 dB,

While the WP-641 is rated at 85 dB, that spec is at the highband
literature standard of 500 kiloHertz separation, not 600 kc as
referenced above, when used on a 2 meter repeater.

but most can manage only 80-83 dB.

Incorrect, Wacom specified the WP-641 at 90 dB isolation at 600 kc, but
they will actually manage 93 dB with careful tuning.
93 dB will allow a 100 watt 2 meter repeater to properly work using a
.35 uV (-116 dBm) receiver. A *good* repeater like a Micor or Mastr II
(read less than typical transmitter side band noise) will allow a 100
watt repeater operate properly with a factory preamp (-125 dBm)
receiver. Granted, this is its limit, but that isn't too bad considering.

A Tube Type amplifier (GE 4EF5A1) or PLL exciter and solid state PA will
allow about 250 watts to be duplexed using the Wacom WP-641.

These specifications can be backed up from the factory literature
available here:
http://www.repeater-builder.com/pdf/wp641.pdf

Maybe Eric was thinking of the WP-639 duplexer that uses 4, 5 inch
cans? His figures would be much closer

Neal Newman wrote:

The obvious question is, is it tuned properly? The Wacom 641 is very
simple to get close with nothing more than a handheld and a signal
generator.
I prefer to tune the pass under low power, like one watt from the
handheld. It makes the pass more precise, as tuning it with a spectrum
analyzer usually won't yield as good a loss. I have always been able to
hit the 1.5 dB loss mark by using this method. PLEASE spare me the
Don't tune the duplexer under power BS These cavities are rated at 350
watts intermittent, and 275 continuous and you won't be able to arc the
fingerstock with a few watts of power, especially if you get it close to
resonance with a signal generator first. After getting the pass
frequency 'correct' you will find that obtaining the stated isolation is
easy.

One thing that happens is if the cavity is not tuned correctly on the
pass frequency, the reject amount will suffer. Why? As the spacing
between pass and reject frequencies decrease, so does the ability for
the cavity to provide the rejection response. With this cavity, the
lowest loss and best return loss appear nearly on top of one another, so
match is at its best when the cavity is properly tuned for lowest
insertion loss. Here is more on pass and reject response with one
cavity from a WP-641 duplexer:
http://www.repeater-builder.com/rbtip/wacombpbrnotes.html

Another thing that happens commonly with a duplexer and a radio set that
was converted from commercial service to amateur, is the actual terminal
impedance will not be 50 ohms. A duplexer that has been optimized on a
piece of 50 ohm test equipment *may* not perform very well in practice.
There are a few things that can be done to help this problem, like using
a matching device (Z matcher) on the transmitter. Some prefer to match
the duplexer to the transmitter by adjusting cabling lengths. Either
method can substantially improve the operation of the duplexer. Sure,
it would be nice or best if the radio set presented a perfect 50 ohm
match, but many we convert do not.

Wacom had written a dissertation on optimizing the duplexer
interconnection cabling lengths. That information, as well as duplexer
tuning, is available here:
http://www.repeater-builder.com/pdf/wp6xxVHFtuninginstructions.pdf
Look on page 4 under the section Cable length between transmitter and
duplexer

Hope this helps...

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Question

2004-05-31 Thread JHCCRadio

A question to the group hope we can find the answer OK I have a
GMRS Repeater located on a large tower over looking the NY/NJ Metro area.
Currently I have been using a Motorola Desktrac Repeater (which is basically 2
Maxtrac mobiles with a basic repeater controller, and it is not continuous duty)
10 dB gain Superstation Master antenna on top of the tower, with 1 1/2
hard-line. The repeater has been putting out 25 watts. I cover a great
deal of area with this repeater, with little dead spots. I purchased an
ICOM FR-4000 repeater last week, hoping to have a more continuous duty
repeater, DTMF Controlsand someother features. After I removed
the Desktrac, and put the ICOM in place I lost total coverage, a portable could
not get in from 2 miles away, when I was getting portable coverage from 30-40
miles away. So I placed the Motorola Desktrac back and no problem.
So far I have no idea why I have lost the
coverage, I know there is a 800 MHz EDACS System putting out 25 watts on the
tower and a VHF System. Both have not interfered with the Desktrac. What could
this be? what possible cures could fix this problem?

Thanks in advance
Joe WPYU470

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater Question (ICOM FR-4000)

2004-05-31 Thread Eric Lemmon
Joe,

Even if your FR-4000 is the correct split (450-470 MHz) for GMRS, it may
require tuning of the receiver's front end before being placed in
service. I learned the hard way, when I set up some Kenwood TKR-750/850
repeaters, that sometimes there are helical resonators in the receiver
that must be optimized. The Icom unit may have a similar design in its
front end. Check the service manual to see if such adjustments are
required.

Even if no such adjustments are required, the FR-4000 may simply be
incapable of avoiding desense from nearby transmitters- even if they are
far removed in frequency. If the VHF transmitter on the same tower is
on a frequency that falls in or near the range of 155.850-155.908 MHz,
its third harmonic will likely desense your repeater's receiver- even if
it is within the FCC specs for spurious emissions.

You did not mention what type of duplexer you have, but if it is the
mobile notch variety, that may be part of the problem. Since GMRS is on
UHF channels with a 5 MHz split, mobile notch duplexers work just fine
in most applications. The problem with mobile notch duplexers is that
they have no pass selectivity at all; the only adjustment is for the
notch. Even pass/reject cavity duplexers have only modest bandpass
selectivity.

Assuming the FR-4000 receiver is properly tuned, it may be necessary to
add one or two bandpass cavities between the duplexer and the receiver
to tighten up the selectivity.

73, Eric Lemmon WB6FLY

type. It is a the bandpass reject type... Thanks for the info I will have
to find if it needs any tuning

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater for trade

2004-05-31 Thread Johnny Shepherd
Hi all - I have a weather proof transportable VHF repeater that I would
like to trade for a HF radio that also has at least 2 meters and 6
meters included also (440 would be nice). This is a working repeater
with the following information --

Transworld Electronics, Inc

TM101 transmitter and
RM101 receiver --- on a 153 MHz frequency.

The 25 watt repeater is rack mounted in a weather proof transportable
gray case Model RP-1525 with 1/4 wave antenna included.

I do not want to sell this unit, I ONLY WANT TO TRADE IT.

Please contact me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as my settings for this
group are set to digest mode because of the volume of email. I may not
see your email of interest if you respond to this yahoo group -

I can email pictures if your interested.

Thanks 73 Johnny KD5LWU Cortez, Colorado

2004-05-31 Thread russ
Hey Leon,
You can get it from Cook Towers. That is where I got mine. Or you can have
them tune and program it. There e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
They also have a toll free phone number but I do not know it off the top of
my head. Ask for Kathy and tell her you are a Ham for a nice discount.
Good luck,

[Repeater-Builder] Motorola Micor Amp Key Line Help Needed

2004-05-31 Thread w9mwq
I have aquired an amp for the repeater. It is a Motorola Micor Amp,
TLD1693E Amp. Does any one know the power input requirement and
what the power output should be on this amp. Also the SWA goes to
ground to key the amp, how would I be able to find a circuit inside
the exciter that goes to ground, or what would be the easiest way to
make a switch for this to key up when the COS is opened. Currently
my COS is high. Any ideas. Thanks.

Mathew
