It depends on which model antenna you have. From what I've seen, having
disassembled many, those that are comprised of coaxial half-wave elements
(VHF PD220, UHF PD1151, PD455, etc.) use radials sloping down at a 45 degree
angle for decoupling only. The length of radials is nominally 1/4 wave, but
they are slightly shorter than that physically due to their width. For
antennas that are non-coaxial elements, the radials are at a 90 degree angle
and serve more as a ground plane. PD200 on VHF, PD400 on UHF have 90 degree
radials. For these antennas, the radials are arguably more critical than
the models where they are used for decoupling only.

If your VHF antenna is in the 21' range, it could be either a PD220 or
PD200. Does it still have a sticker on it?

[Repeater-Builder] Info wanted on Mitrek VHF rptr.

Mod. No. MX23JJA1106BAZ

On PA bd.: HLD4124APR and TLD5591BAZ

Label on top cover reads: " Mobile Communications" and has a "AGT"

The Rcvr is fed thru the SO239 on the front of the Chasis, the Xmtr

[Repeater-Builder] GM300 programing question

2006-03-25 Thread bbedoe

Hi All!  OK, its silly question time!

Background:

I use a number of UHF Maxtracs for GR300 type operations, links what have
you.  I have had no problems programming the little buggers with a pentium
1 233 computer (maybe its a little fast of a computer)

I recent pick up a few UHF GM300's.  The 1st radio I was able to
read, change, program all 8 modes with no problems.  I did some on air
QSO's.  All was well except I programmed a friends repeater wrong. went
back in changed the FREQ, saved it back to the radio, it beeped at me like
normal but now it is now DOA no TX/RX.  The radio powers up, I
can go thought all 8 modes (it originally had only 2) but no TX or RX.

I rebooted the computer, reread the radio (all 8 new modes were there)
programmed it again, beeped like normal. still dead!
GRR!

Yes, I'm aware that Maxtrac and GM300 software is different.  I'm
aware of the speed issues, hence the concern that the pent 1 233mhz being a
little fast, but I've had no problems with the Maxtracs.  The radios are
beeping like normal at the end of the reads/programing, and I'm not getting any
error codes.

Any ideas?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] GM300 programing question

2006-03-25 Thread Eric Lemmon

Brian,

Try testing the radio
with a hand mike plugged into the front, with the accessory connector
unplugged.  Sometimes, the accessory connector pin assignments get restored
to a default pattern during an incomplete write cycle, thereby making the radio
unresponsive to inputs or controls from a RICK.

If you are using a clone
RIB, it's possible that the TTL voltages going to the radio are at the ragged
edge of being out of tolerance.  If using a genuine Motorola RIB, try using
a separate 12 VDC power supply for it, rather than the internal
battery.

I dont think that the speed of your pc hosed that radio. It might just
be a coicendence.

I would wipe all the modes from the radio and make mode 1 a simplex freq

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Info wanted on Mitrek VHF rptr.

2006-03-25 Thread Eric Lemmon
Doug,

Although I have never seen one, I do know that Motorola made some
full-duplex Mitrek radios- but a Mitrek repeater is a new one on me. Is
this unit actually a repeater, that is, does it retransmit any signal it
receives? Or is it simply able to receive on one frequency while
transmitting on another? If the latter, it is not a repeater per se, but
simply a full-duplex radio used in a public-safety application with a
handset.

One method I often use to track down a service manual for oddball equipment
like this, is to look at the channel elements to learn what frequencies were
used. I then contact the seller to learn the history of the radio, and
perhaps where in the country it was used. A search of the FCC Land Mobile
Radio database sometimes reveals what licensee(s) used those frequencies in
that area. Finally, if I'm lucky so far, I can sometimes contact the radio
shop for that entity and talk them out of the service manual that might
still be on a shelf or filed away. I always offer to send a check up front,
for more than the cost of postage, to make it worthwhile to unload a manual
that is no longer needed. Even if the shop won't part with the manual, just
knowing the complete part number of the document is important information.

Above all, I never ask anyone to "just make a copy" of a manual, because
that might tie someone up at a copier or scanner for an hour or more, and
the pages that result are often difficult to make any sense of unless they
are taped together. Maybe if it only is a few pages, but anything over that
goes to a graphics shop for scanning or copying. Although the result is a
complete and high-quality reproduction, the total cost (including two round
trips to the graphics shop) might be three or four times the cost of an
original manual- which sometimes is still available! But, I digress...

I looked up the your model number in my cross-reference manual, without
finding a listing. Perhaps one of the list's Mitrek specialists can provide
some insight into this unusual radio...?

Someone suggested an ID board listed on eBay. I was looking for a cheap
versatile ID board for a microwave beacon so I bought the kit. It
arrived promptly and I assembled it this morning. It took maybe one
half hour to install the components on the board and have it connected
to the computer for programming.

I'm very pleased with the quality of the circuit board, the kit's
documentation and it's total shipped price of $23.25.

An eBay search for ID-O-Matic Repeater IDbrings up this item.

Thanks to whoever it was that led me to buy this ID board.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: GM300 programing question

2006-03-25 Thread Gary
It could be a multitude of problems, as a few have already stated.
However, if it is RSS that is DOS based, you are playing roulette
with your radios if you are using a computer faster than a 486/25.
Slower is better, yet. I happen to use a 486/25 laptop. There is
usually an abundance of 486/xx laptops on Ebay that you can pick up
for a song! Makes a great portable programming platform. I would
stay away from moslow, and/or any kind of DOS emulator, etc. IMHO.
Slow computer with DOS ver. 6.22.

[Repeater-Builder] NEW - ICS Basic repeater controller partial Kits

2006-03-25 Thread brian_martens_ics
Hi All

FYI

I am happy to announce that the Basic repeater controller is now
avaiable in a partial kit form. It will include the Basic PCB, a
programmed microcontroller, a DTMF decoding chip, a 0 ohm resistor and

[Repeater-Builder] 5-Pin Accessory Connectors for MaxTrac and Radius Mobiles

2006-03-25 Thread Eric Lemmon
One source for the 5-pin accessory connectors used on some MaxTrac and
Radius mobile radios is the Molex/Waldom ".156 KK Housings & Terminals 5
circuit" kits sold in a blister pack as part number WMLX-204. The package
contains three #09-50-3051 female housings and 16 #08-50-0106 crimp-on
terminals.

There are three little tangs that must be cut off before the plug will fit,
but this can be done in seconds with a sharp nipper or X-acto knife.

The housing is available without the locking tangs as #09-50-7051:
http://www.molex.com/product/pcb/2139.html
The cut sheet for the terminals is found here:
http://www.molex.com/product/pcb/2478.html
I found both parts available at Mouser Electronics:

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Info wanted on Mitrek VHF rptr.

2006-03-25 Thread skipp025
Motorola used the Mitrek Casting for many other projects
like the mentioned and Loran C receivers. They were quite
up to special projects using a quiver of tried and true
equipment models.

The color of the PC Board (red vs green), the style and
circuit design can tell you a lot about it. Many of the
special projects were made in Texas.

If I saw a picture of it, I could probably tell you more
about it. If it was a special production, the agency
or company for which it was made would now/might be the
only source for the manual, which was supplied as an
"as built" with the equipment.

If you don't know who it was made for... a search of the
frequencies off the channel elements might give you a clue.

[Repeater-Builder] OT: Dayton Fleamarket space prices?

2006-03-25 Thread Paul Finch
Hello,

I know this is off-topic but I don't know where to ask this question. I
have sent a email to the Hamfest folks by the way, who knows if they will
respond.

Has anyone looked at the space price listed on their website? It is a
graduated price scheme, the more spaces you buy the more it costs you! The
price for 3 spaces is almost twice what 2 spaces costs!

Why do they do that? They seem to me to be the highest priced Hamfest,
anyway this price scheme is just strange! Who is getting rich there?
Somebody must be!

Paul

2006-03-25 Thread Paul Finch
Joe,

Wow, this is weird, I got your reply BEFORE I got the message back from me!
Wonder what's up with that! I heard something about the owners of the arena
want to discontinue the Hamvention and sell the property or something like
that. That was two years ago the last time I was at Dayton.

One other thing, our local club here in Azle, Texas is working on our
Hamfest for this year. I think the tables are about $10.00 and all
tailgating and fleamarket areas can and may be inside this year! Something
is wrong with these prices.

I was going to make the trip this year since I have inherited a now bankrupt
two way shop, don't know now. I guess I will but I really don't like it!

Re: Dayton Hamvention and other Amateur Flea Markets/Events

> As I've told a number of people - it looks like they
> are trying to run it into the ground.

Why would you say that? As someone semi in the know about
the Previous 5 to 10 Dayton Flea Markets I've mentioned
some of the issues in play right here on the group. They're
trying like he11 to make people happy and go the extra
mile at Dayton.

In case you haven't noticed, the larger ham radio flea
markets in general have been smaller in size. I can see
clearly see the smaller size of/at many of the long time
Amateur Events I attend each year.

Right about the time Nextel and Cell Phones started a
trek to kill off Land Mobile Radio... all the old time
Two-Way Dealers went out of business or retired (sold
out their 800 freqs to Nextel). So you don't see nearly
the number of old time two way shop types at the flea
markets because we/they seem to be a much smaller number.

I'm happy to report that smart persons doing LMR (Land
Mobile Radio ... aka commercial two-way radio) and
providing true radio service are holding up fairly well.

> It's not dying fast enough for someone...

Actually attendance in general was up over some
previous years

> When you have THREE CARS in an entire section (the
> west one - farthest from the arena) on Sunday, that
> says something.

Yes it does... there are far fewer people doing two-way
radio as a business. One of the first years I was there
all those sections had non-stop Surplus Radio Dealers
dumping 800MHz trunking radios by the truck load. If
no one buys radios that are useless, the dealers don't
come back. Also the weather was pretty bad for 2 years
straight. Pouring rain for two of the three days...

The only trouble last year was Mendelsons trying to
strong-arm their own space deal at the last minute.
His last minute strong arm tatic didn't work like he
thought it would...

I believe the Committee is not who you're supposed to
contact... more like the Flea Market Chairman/contact?

This year is a new Flea Market Chairman. Last years
Chairman my good friend Tom is just an email away. If
you hang out here I'll send him your comments and get an
answer. Wait for a follow up post in the next day or
two (from me).

Doug,

I suspect that your full-duplex radio was used in a mobile telephone system
by Alberta Government Telephones (AGT), which later changed its name to
TELUS. If there's no selective call decoder in it, or loose wiring
suggesting that one was connected, it might have used multiple PL tones for
simple selection. Just a thought...

The following info appears on a MITREK VHF Mobile repeater. This is
a factory (Motorola) built product, NOT an after market modified
mobile radio. Can anyone provide any information or documentation
on this repeater ? Local searches thru Motorola shops have produced
nothing.

On the ID plate: Prim. Pwr. 12v Motorola Canada Ltd.
Doc. No. 109191038X
 MITREK Type JJA Watt 2-10
Mod. No. MX23JJA1106BAZ

On chasis behind handle:HUD1052CPR
On the PC bd. near Rcvr.elements: HLD4082BPR
On frame near Tx elements: HLD1002BPR
On Controller/PL bd.: TKN9539BAZ
On PA bd.: HLD4124APR and TLD5591BAZ

Label on top cover reads: " Mobile Communications" and has a "AGT"
logo. Probably installed by the service shop.

The Rcvr is fed thru the SO239 on the front of the Chasis, the Xmtr
is fed out a SO239 on the left rear of the heat sink casting and the
recess for it was part of the casting process.

This repeater appears to function with the standard control head and
cable, though I don't have the original but have had it bench tested
for operation.

TIA for any and all help

What caused the shop to go bankrupt..?

Someone once told me not to try and make serious money

RE: [Repeater-Builder] AGT = IMTS ?

2006-03-25 Thread Eric Lemmon
Skipp,

I'm just grasping at straws. The IMTS is a lot more complex than a simple
duplex system that might have been used internally by AGT rather than by
subscribers. Back in the late 60's, I used a half-duplex GE Pacer (!) radio
in an MTS system for a couple of years after IMTS became available. It
would have been better to use a full-duplex radio, but this is what I had at
the time. The Pacer was an all-tube radio, except for the transistorized
power supply. It had a mechanical decoder made by Secode. To make a call,
I had to key the handset for a few seconds, and wait for the mobile operator
to respond. That was not much more sophisticated than a magneto telephone!
I eventually got kicked off the system because there were only a handful of
people using the manual MTS- everyone was scrambling to get on the IMTS
bandwagon. Ah, yes... Those were the good old days!

[Repeater-Builder] The Good Old Days

2006-03-25 Thread Paul Yonge
Around the 1970s, I had an RCC repeater on 152.12/158.58 MHz in
Central New York that I used both for paging with Pageboys and Bell &
Howell pagers and for mobile service to a handful of users. Most of
the RCCs owned telephone answering bureaus so we already had "mobile
operators" who patched calls through our answering switchboards. For
the small operations that many of us had, it was more of a hobby and
a convenience to our telephone answering subscribers. Our transceiver
was a big old RCA (500?) that withstood lots of lightning storms and
only required a change of its single tube once a year. The days were
old, good, and a lot of fun. (And I had to sell my little 250-station
magneto telephone company before I could start the RCC because of the
separate eligibility requirements for landline and non-landline
channels.)

I strongly suspect that the price ramp up is to encourage more smaller
spaces and thus increase the diversity of equipment. I can remember
when friends had real problems getting into the flea market. I'm pretty
sure there were a lot of double and triple space sellers say 10 years ago.

If you think that this doesn't make sense, you should be emailing the
people there. Looking at the web site it seems that
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be good
places to direct your feelings.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] OT: Dayton Fleamarket space prices?

2006-03-25 Thread n . mckie

The originator of the now emcommwest fleamarket used to be fun.
One year, I bought a whole series of RCA tube manuals for about
 $5 for the entire box.

Another trip, I bought a roll of half inch Helaix for cheap.

The fleamarket used to be held in Reno - but unattached to another
event. I don't have a clue as how well it is doing now.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: VXR-5000

2006-03-25 Thread Michael Antoine

Mike, I don't have any info on either the CWID 51B or the VXR-5000,
I talked to CSC today on thier 800 line, $17.00 for a manual and
$32.00 for a new call sign PROMM, I have a VXR-5000 Service Manual
somewhere but I can't find the @#$%&* thing, this is typical of me
lately, My wife tells I'm just getting OLD !!

 Thanks for your efforts,

  Thanks Eric,

I don't own a Spectrum Analyzer but I talked to friend at a
two way shop and he is willing to help a Ham out with showing me
how and using his equipment, there are still nice people out there
  thank heavens,

Just to tell the group that "skipp" has provided me with the much
needed info on the above, Thank You very much. Although I have not
tried it yet but I am sure it is a very reliable piece of
information.
Best Regards to all.

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Adding Bandpass Can to Duplexer

2006-03-25 Thread Harold Farrenkopf
Not exactly right.

The length of the cable between the pass cavity and a notch or pass
reject cavity has to be 1/4 wave length including the length of the
loop in the bandpass cavity and that is why the cable lengths are
different for different cavity brands that have different loop sizes.

If the length of that cable is too short for the mounting arrangement,
then add 1/2 wavelength (in cable) to that short cable.

With a Network analyser, one can see that the length is optimised by
viewing the effects of different cable lengths with respect to the
effect of the total return loss, insertion loss, the bandpass response
(whether it adds properly as opposed to having 2 pass bumps with a dip
in the middle like a camel) and the effect of the individual tuning of
the cavities. With the proper length cable, one can tune the cavities
individually and when placed together, the tuning is not effected.
With the wrong lengths, the tuning of the cavities is affected.

I am not familiar with those products mentioned but in Sinclair top
mounted loops between a Q can and a Pass can, the length is 3 to 4"
similar to the feedthrough harness end connection length.

Life is easier with a Network Analyser.

Harold
