[Repeater-Builder] To tune into a dummy load or the antenna...

Speaking of tuning the duplexers that is. I have seen it done both ways
with good results. Opinions? ;-)
Thanks,
Robert

Thanks for the reply Adi,
Like I said before...I have seen this done both ways. I know I have seen
the text on tuning with the dummy load connected to the antenna port on
dup.s. I may have seen it in text before on the dup.s attached to the
repeater antenna (but I have slept since then ;-) Just really curious
what people think and what most people are doing. I have had success
both ways. What do you think? :-)

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Kenwood TM-G707A Remote Base Question

2004-02-01 Thread Robert W Burton
I do this with a RC 100. You just have to unlock the mic, open squelch,
tell the little thing to tell me what freq. it is onand it does ;-)
After that, before the squelch noise comes on the repeater...just key up,
close the squelch, lock the mic...and your done. All of this is done
remotely. Also done in 2 seperate string of dtmf's.

The voice unit is in the kenwood right? Yes if you can sit there with
the remote microphone and push all the buttons at the correct time it
would work.

[Repeater-Builder] PL problems

2004-02-01 Thread Robert W Burton
I have a repeater that is the MCC converted GE Mastr Exec. II with the
built in RC100. It also has a TS-64 tone board in it. Right now the
repeater is able to TX the PL tone (and the correct one) but not RX the
PL tone (just kind of sits there ;-) The problem we have is it is at a
limited access area, and I will have limited time to work on it. Won't
go into all the details of it...but if it is not raining I hope to grab
it during my lunch break tomorrow, then put it back on Tuesday.

Just wanted to take a list of "possibilities" with me to look at it with.

Can't believe it. Not only was the PL not working...but all the LEDs on
the front panel was out. There is a plug on the top from that panel. I
had missed putting it on all the pins by one. Can't believe the thing
worked or didn't burn up. It just took out the pl...and the LEDs. Move
it over correctlyworks fine now. Glad it was a easy fix ;-)

[Repeater-Builder] Email problems with Yahoo

Curious if anyone else has had this problem.
I get the my "Group emails" via digest...so I get them once a day. It
has been a busy week so I didn't notice until todaybut 2 of my groups

for some reason. My mailbox was not fullso that couldn't have been
the reason. I moderate several groups including a NWS Activation Page
Out list that I don't want to have problems with (and haven't...knock on

Ideas?

[Repeater-Builder] audio problems

2004-03-25 Thread Robert W Burton
We have a hub repeater within our system that is having a problem.
Every so often the audio level just drops. No distortion, no intermod
mixing that we can hear...the level of the audio just gets softer. No
loss of signal either. The repeater is located on a tower that has 2 fm
radio stations running lots of power on it. One of the radio stations
has caused some problems with the local school and neighboors who are
just underneath it's footprint. Problems with them getting into t.v. ,
intercoms, etc. This problem will just "happen" then fix itself. There
are several pagers, cell phone and one digital t.v. (I think there still
in businessif your in the Atlanta area it's Bellsouth's thing with
the dishes in the tops of treesit's really too funny to see these
things ;-) on this same tower.

The repeater is a MCC converted GE Master Exec II with a SCom7
controller.

Robert

I think I would take a look at the Deviation control pot on the exciter -
maybe dirty. Does the audio come back by itself? Does it stay gone long
enough to divide and conquer, ie, look at the output of the controller,
next the input, and determine if it fails in the receiver or controller,
or
exciter?

If it happens often enough, and long enough you will find it.

I remember a M2 Repeater with a cold solder joint on the Audio Card.

Like to never found it.

[Repeater-Builder] Audio problems revisited

2004-04-18 Thread Robert W Burton
I mentioned this problem to the group a couple of weeks agosame thing
is happening with a little more info.

MCC Converted GE Mastr Exec II with built in RC100 w/TS64 (UHF)
ARR Preamp
Motorola B/R Cans
DCI UHF Filter (10c) between the repeater antenna and duplexer.
Kenwood TNG707 for the remote base

The problem I have is that the audio goes away on the repeater from time
to time, but comes back within minutes. It was suggested to look at the
deviation pot. The one day "I caught it" doing it's thing, I didn't have
any cleaner but did move the deviation pot back and forth. Whether or
not that did the trick or it was by luck...don't know.

Today it was up to it's old tricks. Audio went completely away on the
repeat audio, however audio would pass from the recieve through the
remote base over to the repeater it is linked to. Audio did not pass
back from the remote base. After a few minutes the repeat audio would be
very faint and even increase in volume...then drop back. I turned the
remote base transmit on and off a few times...then all of a sudden it
came back to life full repeat audio.

As I had mentioned before the county has stuck a trunking (825mhz?) panel
antenna about 3 to 5 feet away from the repeater antenna. They are in
the "testing" mode right now. So it has been hard to say if this is
it...or something else.

Any other ideas?I do plan on taking some cleaning spray to this
"restricted" site the next visit :-)
Thanks and 73,
Robert

[Repeater-Builder] Re:Audio problems revisited

2004-04-18 Thread Robert W Burton
Thanks Mike for your reply,
The cool thing about the MCC converted stuff is that the controller is on
the inside of the GE. The only openings are holes that are drilled above
the pa section for a fan. There is a harness but it is for the remote
base which plugs into the db-15 on the front of the thing. Of course you
have the power cablesbut that is it.

I am afraid I will have to "borrow" a trunking scanner to find this
problem...or the lack there of if it is not overload.
Thanks,
Robert
ps I like your isp! (bluesbrothers.net). Bones Malone is suppose to be

Can you get details on the trunking equipment that feeds the
new antenna? Maybe park a scanner on the channel? (channels?)

If you have problems only when the scanner says the channel is live,
then you have it...

And it may not be front end overload...

Years ago I had a UHF repeater at a site and another group moved
a 2m box into the adjacent cabinet. No problems... I swapped out
controllers one day (which required building a new harness) and
all of a sudden had a new problem... That's when I discovered that
you don't make audio harness a 1/4 wave long when you have a
250w transmitter 3 feet away...

[Repeater-Builder] OT- Look for small business band ht's

2004-05-02 Thread Robert W Burton
Sorry for the Off Topic thread,

With hamfest, spring cleaning and the sorts...I thought this might be a
good time to look for this.

I am a Middle School band director. Each year my group takes a trip to
Disney World (and this year also to Six Flags). After my last trip, I
decided that there was a need to purchase some business band radios for
the band. Each year we try and use FRS radios...this is just plain dumb
with the amount of radios that are used at these parks. I am starting to
look at some of the business band radios out there. I am not real
familar with some of the newer radios. I am looking for some radios that
could have interchangeable battery paks. It would be nice to find some
that would be capable of fast charging as well since the turn around
between would be minimal. I would also like for them to be smaller (not
the large RS 202 size) since most of the folks will clip them to their
belts or in a fanny pak while in the parks. If there are dealers on the
list...please email me direct (or anyone else with suggestions for that
matter). I am not completely sold on vhf or uhf...however it would be
nice to get uhf and have our local school talk around freq. programmed
in. I will want to purchase between 5 and 8 with extra batteries /
chargers.

Thanks,
Robert Burton

[Repeater-Builder] RC 210 / 220 radio for remote ideas?

2004-05-08 Thread Robert W Burton
I am considering upgrading to a RC 210 controller over the summer. I
have a RC100 (from MCC) that I married with a CSI CS1688 latch board to
work with a TMG707 and a IC3AT for a remote base system. Worked great. I
took the controller and WAS going to put it into a cleaner looking
box...but never got around to it. Running another RC100 with just the
TMG707 right now.

Meanwhile...the RC210 came out. Looks great and would make life easier
in the remote base work for the NWS here locally. However.it would
still leave my 220 remote out (I need to control the BCD line and would
have no way of doing it)

I need ideas to make a 220 freq agile (or at least work the channels on
it) with the RC210

or

Ideas on how to use the RC100 to control the IC3AT and use the RC210 as
the main controller.

Would really like NOT to do the other. Trying to make this as simple as
possible.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Robert

[Repeater-Builder] 2 repeaters on 1 antenna

2004-06-02 Thread Robert W Burton
With the talk of 2 rx'ers on one antenna...what about this;

I have purchased a RC210 for my repeater.  Here is what on the repeater;
GE Mastr II UHF running 60 watts out of cans
ARR preamp
DB420 at 190'
TM-G707 remote base
Diamond Tribander at 125' (for remote base)
Moto. B/R 1500 series cans

I am wanting to stick a low powered UHF repeater on the same antenna.
This would be an optional control rx'er for the main repeater but will
run full time ISS audio (when FCC approved). This would be on the 3rd
port of the RC210. The low power repeater would probably be in the
442.000 range at about 5 to 10 watts. Would run one of the small mobile
duplexers.

I have heard about multi-couplers, etc. but not sure exactly what I will
need to make this happen. 2 questions

1) How much desense will this cause?
2) What equipment will I need to make this happen (multi-couplers, etc.)
and what to expect on cost?

There is the ATL Hamfest coming up this weekend and will want to pick up
parts then. The other repeater will be stuff I have. (GE MVP, PPL6060 or
599's)

Ideas?

Thanks,
Robert

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Diamond X500

2004-10-16 Thread Robert W Burton

Hey Coy,
I have a Diamond X-3200A that was used for my repeater antenna till I got
a DB-420...now it is my remote base antenna. When the antennas were
changed out we took it apart and to our amazement it was like poured out
a pitcher of water on the ground (and this was before the hurricanes came
thru GA ;-). I just didn't know. I sealed up that antenna to the hilt
when it went up. Drain holeswhat drain holes ;-) Have you pulled
the guts out of it yet? I wonder how the foam is holding up on the
inside of the radone? You folks got enough water in Orlando to fill that
radone up 2 times! A local ham here (thanks Darryl 8-) also did a mod
on soldering the connections of the inside copper wire where it joins
together. Comes loose sometimes with enough whipping action. Check
those cap.s at the bottom too for it's connection.
Good Luck,
Robert

Hi Gang,
Anyone know anything about keeping water out of a Diamond X500
antenna for a repeater use, Or any other suggestions, Short of
heaving it off the side of the building.

[Repeater-Builder] Repeater Audio not passing

2004-11-14 Thread Robert W Burton

This is a problem that has plaqued me now for months...and I can't seem
to find out what the problem is. I have a Micro Computer Concepts
converted GE Mastr Exec II UHF repeater the built in RC100 controller. I
also have a TM-G707 as a remote base. The problem I have is that
sometimes the "repeated" audio disappears, but the audio will still pass
thru the remote base port. This may go on for just hours or daysbut
the "repeated" audio will come back. I can go and cycle the power on and
off...and it fixes it, for awhile.

I have cleaned connections, I have changed out the exciter, I have
changed out the op. amp chip on the controller.

I have NOT changed out C4 nor R9, which is in that line (with the except
it also ties into the remote base tx line...that is not having problems).
I have also not changed out the op amp on the drop in board that MCC put
in. It seems to control the custon front volume and squelch panel...but
I am not sure if that would be the problem.

I have a 800mhz trunked antenna that got put REAL close to the repeater
antenna. If that causes it to blank out, I don't know (also have a LARGE
DCI intermod filter)...but what componet would be going bad?

Ideas?
