2019-08-21 Thread David Henderson
Hi David,

Many thanks. That first command worked and the clients are now able to playback
the audio :)

Re: [RDD] Playback Problem

2019-08-21 Thread David Klann
David,

Type this command in a terminal window on the server:

sudo chmod a+rx /var/snd

and see if you can play audio on the clients. If not, you may also need to run
this command on the server:

sudo find /var/snd -type f -exec chmod a+r '{}' ';'

(Best to copy and paste that command into the terminal window to get the
proper quote symbols and spacing.)

Hope this helps!

Re: [RDD] Playback Problem

2019-08-21 Thread David Henderson
Thanks again for the help :)

Seems it is permissions related as the server displays the contents of the
folder no problem, but the clients don't:

[rd@rdcl1 ~]$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 24G 3.8G 19G 17% /
tmpfs1.7G 76K 1.7G 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3115G 92M 109G 1% /home
10.0.0.130:/var/snd 1.8T 261G 1.5T 15% /var/snd
[rd@rdcl1 ~]$ ls /var/snd
ls: cannot open directory /var/snd: Permission denied
[rd@rdcl1 ~]$

What's the best way to fix this?

Hi Fred, all,The 18i20 is a rack-mount unit and has a built-in AC supply which is required for operation... it won't run just from USB. Manual specs +15.5dBu which is just under +20dBm.All I know is that we had tried a usb-powered card in the past from Behringer and the Scarlett definitely blows it away.Regarding the issue mentioned with the card needing a power cycle on reboot, I can't say that we've experienced that at all?Regarding X32, we actually do that setup in our production studio and successfully route Rivendell to our X32 as well through the X-USB interface card... Works great!Max Kelley KC2SPYm...@maxkelley.comwww.maxkelley.com585-653-8883On Aug 21, 2019 11:43, Fred Gleason wrote:On Wed, 2019-08-21 at 09:55 -0400, Max Kelley wrote:

Curious: how much headroom do you get with those? This has been the big

downside of most USB audio devices I've tested, including those with

balanced I/O: they max out at around 0 dBm. This is largely due to the

limitations of the USB power connection (+5 vdc @ 100 mA max), whereas

a true 'pro' balanced output requires a bipolar +/-15 vdc power supply

to achieve the accustomed headroom of around +20 dBm.

Cheers!

[RDD] Fwd: Sound cards

2019-08-21 Thread Tim Camp
Greetings,

In the case of the X32 usb interface, it is powered by the same rails as
the console.
According to Music-Tribe the clip point on the x32 usb interface and their
other expansion cards is +16dbm
Interface is 24 bit at whatever sample rate the console is running.
I haven't put it on the test bench, but that spec would put it in line with
the channel inputs on the console
which I guess makes sense.

But if I run a second macro that changes sources within a couple of minutes,

In my experience, USB-serial converters tend to get remapped by the

/dev/ttyUSB1 the next. The last time I had occasion to use oe, I set up a
udev rule to give it an alias (e.g. /dev/switcher0) which it retains no

Here is how I have the Serial configured ...
Serial0 Enabled
TTY Device: /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud Rate: 9600
Parity: None
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
Terminator: None

That looks right. Do you have the DIP switches on the ACS 8.2 Plus set
correctly?

I have a feeling that the problem might be with the way RD is talking to the
adapter but like I said, it works at first than seems to hang-up for minutes
before you can execute another command to the switcher.

I had a similar problem with a new ACS 4.1 just last night; it turned out
to have an incorrect DIP switch setting ("remote" instead of "PIP").

If you temporarily stop the Rivendell service and install Putty, you'll
find it an excellent diagnostic tool.

You've a much better chance, certainly. The only way to tell for sure
is to put an ocilloscope on an output, run sinosoidal tone through it
and note the level at which the waveform starts flattening out at the
peaks.

Cheers!

For Pro Audio applications, all the world is moving to some form of
AoIP. For Sound Reinforcement, that means systems like CobraNet or AVB.
For Broadcast, it's a bouquet of systems from various vendors, all of
them broadly compatibile with AES67.

Correct, unfortunately. ASI effectively sunset CentOS 6 support over a
year ago. FWIW, the current ASI driver (v4.20.10) does work fine on
CentOS 7 and supports those cards. RPMs are available at:

You can also get a list of all mounted filesystems by doing:

You should see an entry in the resulting list that looks something

Hey there,

We also use an X32 (compact version) as our main studio console, along
with the ADAT expansion card, and all our computers and the encoders are
connected to it through their lightpipe "cables" and RME Digi9652 ADAT
cards.
Works like a charm, we are able to route in and out a lot of signals
without them leaving the digital space until it becomes analog for FM
transmission. Of course if we had the money, we would be fully eg.
Dante, or any equivalent Ethernet-based audio link, but this compromise
is good for us.

All this is quite affordable and fully supported on our Linux machines.

Greetings Rob,

Of course it always depends on your needs, but on each station we use a
Behringer X32 rack, which is in itself a console
however it gives you 32 in and 32 outs via usb which can easily be
configured as 16 stereo in and outs or a combination of stereo and mono.
It works a charm and can be used with alsa or jack all for less than 1100
bucks.
Plus you can control all channel mutes, level, via macros from rivendell.

May not be a solution for everyone but 32 io's for less than 1100 is a good
deal.

2019-08-21 Thread Bill Putney

Patrick,

I know the addresses are a bit more daunting than the 4 octets we're use
to. At least they're in hexadecimal.

Back in the early days of digital networking I was a support engineer
for a packet switched network carrier. We used Varian minicomputers that
has about the same compute power as an apple watch and slightly less
memory. All the software was hand coded in assembly language. One of the
things I did was writing software patches and inserting them in nodes in
various places around the world. If I messed up and the node crashed,
that customer was off the net until their software was reloaded from
California over the network. That involved loading net boot code that
was 100 16 bit words long. It was very dense and one wrong bit in a word
would cause it to fail. I remember one night I crashed a node in upstate
NY and had to call their data center operator at about 2AM their time a
read him the net boot over the phone as he put it into the switch
register on the front of the minicomputer one word at a time. So yeah,
those long IPv6 addresses are a pain but, there are worse things. :)

My belief is IPv6 is being adopted slowly due to the “if it isn’t broke, don’t

I have to. Changes always have unintended consequences (just look at some of my
Rivendell PRs). Since most people have plenty enough address space and don’t
seem to mind running NAT, there isn’t any real reason to change (hey, let’s
change our entire network topography for no perceived benefit). I suppose when
I ask AWS for an elastic IPv4 address and they tell me to go pound sand, it
will force the issue for me. As for my home, Frontier DSL and Rise Wireless…
I’m not sure if they can even spell IPv6.

There’s also the support issue. I don’t know if you ever had to have someone,
that can barely use a mouse, enter an IP address over the phone before. It’s
only four 1-3 digit numbers and 3 periods, but you’d think you were having them
enter the formula for transparent aluminum.

gateways and every device had a unique address, folks lie Google and NSA could
find a way to get up to some mischief. When I started working in the field, we
all used unique addresses because no one could imagine we'd run out of the 4
octets of addresses. When I got my /24 in the 80's, the folks at SRI who had
the contract to manage domains and addresses tried to talk me into a /16. I
should have taken them up on it. Who knew I'd have a house full of computers?

Like all the big carriers that have all the v4 address space
have too much control of ICAN.

  No.
More like the major backbone providers still have a great deal of IPv4

I'm with you on this Rob. It's frustrating!

It seems like the combination of 1) "reasonably priced", 2) "industrial
grade", and 3) "works with Linux" audio devices have become unicorns.

I used to install the Digigram VX222 (PCI) and VX222e (PCIe), but Digigram
recently made a hardware modification that has rendered this card unusable on
Linux (even with a vendor-provided, updated driver).

The most significant problem I have experienced is finding an audio device
with balanced inputs and outputs. My current solution, though less than ideal,
is the ASUS Xonar devices and a matchbox (StudioHub, Henry Engineering, Angry
Audio, etc.) to handle the balanced/unbalanced conversion.

What are others doing?

Re: [RDD] Sound cards

2019-08-21 Thread David Klann

[RDD] Sound cards

2019-08-21 Thread Rob Landry

On Monday morning a direct lightning hit to the building where two of our
stations have their studios took out several thousand dollars worth of
equipment, including the ASI sound cards in the Rivendell playout systems
for the two stations. The exact card we were using is no longer in
production, so we ordered two new ASI5810's. When we put them in, they
weren't recognized by CentOS 6 and Rivendell couldn't see them.

The 5810's require at least version 4.18 of the asihpi driver, and the
version we had been using was 4.16. Newer versions will not install on
CentOS 6.

On CentOS 7 at a different station, I was able to install one of the newer
drivers but Rivendell wouldn't see it.

While I have not yet tried to use a 5810 under Debian 9, I think ASI and I
have come to the parting of the ways. It's clear from the disappearance of
cards such as the M-Audio Delta and Echo MIA from the marketplace that the
industry is moving way from analog audio, and those of us who still
maintain analog plants may have to rely on USB adapters and external
matchboxes (which install without trouble on pretty much anything).

What sound cards are y'all using for new Rivendell systems these days?

Re: [RDD] Playback Problem

2019-08-21 Thread Gabriele Fergola
u need to make some try :D

in sheel try to simply do an "ls /var/snd" (without quote)
or you can just execute "mount |grep snd" but in this case, u see only if
it is mounted but not if it is accessible

if u can see all your files it's meaning all is mounted well. If it stuck
or don't see nothing is not well mounted and you need to dig a little bit :D

Gabriele

Hello David,
Double check if the directory /var/snd is well mounted. Normally rdairplay is
doing that when cannot read the songs.

[RDD] Playback Problem

2019-08-21 Thread David Henderson
I had to do a fresh install on my Rivendell server due to the OS hard disk
developing a fault. I've replaced it and got everything imported, including all
the audio and the database. For some reason the clients can't play any audio -
when adding an audio cut to RDAirplay and pressing the 'Start' button just
makes the cut disappear completely. Similarly, no audio is playable in
RDLibrary - the play button lights up green when pressed, but there is no sound
and the counter doesn't move. There's nothing greyed out either, so everything
looks as it should. The server plays audio with no problems at all - any ideas?
