I will Look Into your suggestions and see if they work. We For purposes
of security We will set this up on an production terminal. But We will
see how wil this solution works.

Basically you install the ALSA/Jack bridge and set Rivendell up to
talk to that. Then any ALSA application (VoIP, Chromium etc) can send
and receive audio to it. We no longer use VoIP but a website called
cleanfeed.net with Chromium installed as a web browser on the
Rivendell machine people will remote to. We also use Guacamole for
remote desktop access.

So all a remote presenter has to do is open Chrome, click two links
(one for the remote desktop in the browser and the other for the
Cleanfeed site for audio) and they're ready to go as if they were in
the studio. This also means there's no software for the remote user to
install (no need for VoIP, Teamviewer, VPN or RDP setup as we used to
have).

If there are any questions I'll try and answer them. :-)

Re: [RDD] Several questions Voice Track & Logs Backups

2018-02-21 Thread Patrick
There isn’t anything different the talent has to do. The magic is handled by
the rsync scripts which run in cron.

Every 15 minutes I run an rsync script that checks if there are any new voice
tracks to send to the server. If there are, it sends them.

Every night at midnight I have an rsync script that checks for new audio files
(music, sweepers, etc) that have been added to the server. All new content is
downloaded to /var/snd on the remote computer.

This is all handled behind the scenes. The talent just runs RdLogEdit like
normal. The only thing we can’t do remotely is RdAirplay because it is too SQL
intensive. With good internet access, RdAirplay would probably work too.

It is a hack, but we’ve been doing this for a year without any issues. We have
2 remote studios.

exactly the same as being local.

It may be better where you’re at. I live in the sticks and the Rivendell server
is on a 6MB/768K DSL line.

Re: [RDD] Several questions Voice Track & Logs Backups

2018-02-21 Thread Patrick
We do remote voice tracking by doing the following:

1) Establish a VPN from remote locations to main Rivendell server location.

2) Remote Rivendell configurations use SQL server over VPN on main Rivendell
server.

3) Remote Rivendell configurations use their own local copy of /var/snd.

4) Remote and main Rivendell server keep /var/snd in sync using “rsync” scripts
over VPN.

The way Rivendell does SQL queries is not very efficient, so other than mild
delays while RdLogEdit talks SQL over the VPN, the system works quite well.

Rivendell provides Web APIs for a lot of its functions, and has several web
pages in the /var/www/rd-bin directory. For example,
http://.../rd-bin/listlog.html will list the contents of a log, in XML
form. ("..." is your Rivendell machine's IP address.) The pages are very
basic, mostly proof of concept or testing; certainly not user-friendly.

All data is queryable from the database.
You could also create a custom exporter loadable module (for example,
https://github.com/WMFO/Rivendell-Spinitron-Update).

Some attempts at this are available online, but I am unsure of their
completeness or available support.

Acquainting yourself with the MySQL dump
(https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/mysqldump.html) and rsync
(https://manpages.debian.org/stretch/rsync/rsyncd.conf.5.en.html) commands,
coupled with backupninja (https://0xacab.org/riseuplabs/backupninja) or custom
bash scripts, may suffice for backing up audio storage and the database.

There are many possibilities. Since we use the ZFS filesystem, backing up
storage is done with the zfs send / receive commands quite easily.
https://github.com/RadioStudent/backup-rsync-zfs

Note: we at Radio Študent are not current users of Rivendell (but monitor
development due to planned deployment) and other, more current means to achieve
your goals may exist.
