[RollTideFan] Will It Ever Stop????
From The Anniston Star Animal-rights group moves to stop JSU from using 'Gamecocks' nickname By Ben Cunningham Star Staff Writer 08-13-2005 What do chickens and Chippewas have in common? Both have groups of people that want them kept out of college football stadiums and basketball arenas – more specifically, off the players’ jerseys and the school walls. For the second time in four years, the animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked the National Collegiate Athletic Association to stop Jacksonville State University and the University of South Carolina from using the nickname “Gamecocks” because it supposedly promotes the sport of cockfighting. The request, in the form of a letter mailed Wednesday to NCAA President Myles Brand, came hot on the heels of the NCAA’s decision last week to ban college teams from using “hostile or abusive” nicknames for their sports teams in postseason play. That ban was aimed squarely at schools whose teams use names based on American Indians, such as Central Michigan University’s Chippewas. The move has put many fans on the warpath. Now PETA has stepped into the ring. PETA campaign manager Dan Shannon said the decision on Indians spurred his organization to charge for the chicken change now. “The fact is that cockfighting is illegal in 48 states and is hideously cruel,” Shannon said. The sport, in which two specially bred roosters square off in a fight to the death, is illegal in both Alabama and South Carolina. Here, cockfighting or operating a “cock pit” is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $20-$50. Aside from being illegal, the sport is cruel, Shannon said, because it almost always ends with the death of at least one of the animals. The Gamecocks are having none of it. JSU president Bill Meehan said Friday the school doesn’t support cockfighting, but he has no plans to change the school’s nickname and doesn’t want to get into a debate with PETA over the matter. “It’s a non-issue,” Meehan said. “I wouldn’t want to see us change.” E.C. “Baldy’ Wilson doesn’t want to see it change either. He was a member of the Jacksonville State Teacher’s College football squad in 1946, and a veteran just back from the war in Europe. That was the year players voted to change the name to “Gamecocks” from “Eagle Owls” – a predatory bird found in Scandinavia and northern Asia. “We’d go places and … people would say, ‘What is an eagle owl?’” said Wilson, now 82 and still a supporter of the football program. In picking a replacement, the players went with something more familiar. “Back in the old days everybody had a yard full of chickens,” Wilson said. Nobody connected with the team actually fought birds at cockfights, as he remembers it, but the young men admired roosters. “They’re pretty and they’re proud,” Wilson said. “They have a lot of pride and they’ll fight to defend their turf.” Shannon says that PETA has no problem with teams naming themselves after other animals, such as tigers or bears. Those names honor the nobility and majesty of the animals he said. “Gamecocks is the only nickname that promotes cruelty,” Shannon said. For JSU to call its teams the “Gamecocks” is tantamount to calling them the “Wifebeaters” or the “Looters,” or other illegal activities, according to the PETA letter. In 2001, PETA asked both JSU and USC directly to change the names, and received “polite responses” from both schools declining to do so. Shannon said the organization still is waiting for a response from the NCAA on its latest request. In the meantime, JSU appears prepared to defend its turf. After all, the school this summer installed new artificial turf at its football stadium, emblazoned with a picture of a fighting rooster at midfield and the word “Gamecocks” in huge letters in each end zone. Meehan called PETA a “good” organization” that has chosen the “wrong focus” with the mascot issue. He expects that when classes begin Aug. 31 and the football team kicks off Sept. 1, most students on campus will rally behind the Gamecocks, much as they did in 2001. “If they did anything they did help solidify our identity then,” Meehan said. [RollTideFan] Bama Fan
A good little Auburn story. An Auburn University family of football supporters head out one Saturday to do their Christmas shopping. While in the sports shop the son picks up an Alabama jersey and says to his older sister, I've decided to become an Alabama fan and I would like this for Christmas. His big sister is outraged by this and promptly whacks him round the head and says, Go talk to mother. Off goes the little lad with the Alabama jersey in hand and finds his mother. Mom? Yes son? I've decided I'm going to be an Alabama fan and I would like this jersey for Christmas. The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and says, Go talk to your father! Off he goes with the Alabama Jersey in hand and finds his father. Dad? Yes son? I've decided I'm going to be an Alabama fan and I would like this jersey for Christmas. The father is outraged and promptly whacks his son around the head and says, No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT! About half an hour later they're all back in the car and heading towards home. The father turns to his son and says Son, I hope you've learned something today? The son says, Yes, Dad, I have. Good son, what is it? The son replies, I've only been an Alabama fan for an hour and I already hate you Auburn bastards. ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! [RollTideFan] the insanity continues
Look especially at the last few paragraphs about PETAs concerns. Schools consider appeals to NCAA By Steve Wieberg and Eddie Timanus, USA TODAY As Florida State moved Wednesday to protect its Seminoles name and symbols, at least two other Division I schools affected by new NCAA restrictions on the use of Native American imagery weighed appeals. Neither Utah, which derives its nickname from the local Ute tribe, nor Central Michigan, which calls its teams the Chippewas, has taken formal action. But officials foresee challenging an NCAA ruling that their Indian references and images are offensive. We're still a little surprised at how this all came out and how the NCAA described what we do (in using the Ute as a symbol), Utah athletics director Chris Hill said. We know we have the support of the Ute Nation, and we anticipate that we will appeal. Said Central Michigan spokesman Steve Smith, All indications are we will file an appeal. Other Division I schools Alcorn State (Braves), Arkansas State (Indians), Bradley (Braves), Illinois (Fighting Illini) and Louisiana-Monroe (Indians) have not decided on a course of action. Nor has Division II North Dakota (the Fighting Sioux), which plays Division I hockey and is scheduled to host an NCAA regional next March. The NCAA will prohibit any school not complying with its mascot guidelines from hosting any association-sponsored postseason events. Meanwhile, Rep. Tom Feeney,R-Fla., who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, said his office will push the NCAA to reconsider and, if rebuked, he'll seek legislative relief. That, the Orlando lawmaker said, could be an amendment to antitrust laws to specifically prohibit what the NCAA has done. ... They have the right to promulgate reasonable rules, but they don't have the right to promulgate unreasonable rules. Effectively, they're restraining in this case the right of Florida State students and Florida State athletes and Florida State supporters to participate in and support postseason play. Feeney also criticized the new NCAA guidelines as restrictions on free speech and an infringement on colleges' autonomy. FSU athletics director Dave Hart Jr. was critical of what he called the stealth nature of the NCAA process. FSU and other schools, he charged, were kept in the dark. Though targeted schools were ordered by the NCAA to conduct and share self-reviews of nicknames and mascots, Hart said school and Seminole Tribe of Florida officials should have been invited to testify before the executive committee. NCAA President Myles Brand said he called Hart 24 hours before the vote and told him that this is the issue on the table; I don't know which way the vote's going to go. Why not the Irish? The NCAA says it has never questioned Notre Dame's Fighting Irish nickname or leprechaun mascot because it hasn't received a formal complaint. We have not gotten information from any group that represents Irish or (anyone of) Irish ancestry ... that they believe that image is hostile and/or abusive, said Charlotte Westerhaus, NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion. On the other hand, we had a lot of input from Native American tribes across the country that they believe the imagery at Florida State and other schools is (offensive). Feeney raised the Irish question Wednesday. There's no end to this, he said. I happen to be an American of Irish descent. Should I be outraged at the notion that the Fighting Irish suggest a brawling, half-drunken Irishman? How about the Holy Cross Crusaders? Should every American Muslim be outraged at the thousands upon thousands of Muslims and atheists and non-Christians who perished during the Crusades? ... I really believe the NCAA is imposing the thought police on sports teams. Six Division II and III schools use Fighting Scots: Edinboro (Pa.), Ohio Valley (W.Va.), Wooster (Ohio), Monmouth (Ill.), Gordon (Mass.) and Maryville (Tenn.). Two use Scots: Macalester (Minn.) and Alma (Mich.). PETA weighs in: The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Brand on Wednesday asking the NCAA to stop South Carolina and Jacksonville (Ala.) State from using the nickname Gamecocks. The letter, a copy of which was given to USA TODAY by PETA, says Gamecocks are named after the birds used in cockfighting, a hideous 'blood sport' that, like spousal abuse, bank robbery and driving while intoxicated, is illegal in both South Carolina and Alabama. Said Feeney: For once, I believe that PETA, at least on the level of logic, is correct. If the NCAA has to protect offended Native Americans ... by God, PETA ought to advocate for the protection of every organism in the animal kingdom. Im searching for a news story on this. I heard it on my local morning news, but havent found anything I can forward yet. But the story goes like this. U Georgia is playing Boise State in the opener. One of the kids from Boise has a father in Iraq. GA fans found out about it and paid for the man to come home to see his kid play, but the NCAA ruled that makes the GA fans Boise boosters and the gift is disallowed. So the guy cant come home. This is just ridiculous. I heard an NCAA fan say on fox news yesterday that if member schools dont agree with NCAA rulings they are free to pull out. NCAA won't let them pay for dad's trip to game By CHIP TOWERS The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 08/11/05 ATHENS A group of Georgia football fans took up a collection to pay for a Boise State player's father to fly from Baghdad to see his son play against the Bulldogs in Athens. But the NCAA rule book got in the way. Dan Miller, father of Broncos sophomore guard Tad Miller, is a retired police lieutenant who is training Iraqi police officers. When Sam Hendrix of Signal Mountain, Tenn. suthndawg to his fellow Georgia fans on the Dawgvent, an Internet message board read a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the Millers, he started an online movement to raise the $2,700 it will cost Dad to make it to Sanford Stadium to see his son play in the home opener Sept. 3. Within moments of suthndawg's post, there were 25 to 50 people who offered to pledge money, said Ryan Crowe, a 25-year-old legal assistant from Atlanta who offered to collect and distribute the funds. It just took off from there. But when Crowe checked with the two schools, he was told the UGA fans' generosity would be a violation of NCAA bylaws regarding extra benefits and expenses for student athletes and their families. Ironically, by providing this money, these [Georgia] fans would in effect become Boise State boosters, said Amy Chisholm, UGA's assistant athletics director for compliance. The NCAA defines a booster as a representative of an institution's athletics interests. NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent did not have an immediate response to questions about the situation Wednesday. Makes no sense to me, said Hendrix, a 56-year-old marketing consultant. It just hits me that twice in a week, these people have lost touch with reality. The NCAA caused a furor when it ruled last week that member schools' Native American mascots would no longer be allowed at championship events. Word of the Georgia fans' good intentions and their being thwarted spread quickly via the Internet. It was such a nice and giving gesture, I almost felt embarrassed, said Kathy Miller, Tad's mother, who lives in Boise, Idaho. We appreciate it so much. But we want people to know that the company Dan contracts for pays for his RR every six months, and this will be his first time home since January. So his travel is taken care of. Perhaps they can collect money to send some underprivileged kids to the game or something, she added. Kathy Miller said the family received other overtures from Georgia fans. One offered to host a party for the family when it arrives in Athens. Miller said she is running everything by Boise State's compliance office. Said Crowe: Us Georgia fans love our football but, as a collective group, we're pretty hospitable people. Question: How do you tell the difference between Democrats, Republicans And Southern Republicans? The answer can be found by posing the following question: You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an Islamic Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you. You are carrying a Glock cal .40, and you are an expert shot? You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? ~~~ Democrat's Answer: Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor! Or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior. This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for few days and try to come to a consensus. ~ Republican's Answer: BANG! ~ Southern Republican's Answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click.(sounds of reloading). BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! click Daughter: Nice grouping, Daddy! It's absolutely ludicrous. It seems that any last vestiges of common sense have been eradicated from the NCAA. I think it's time for some major schools to part company with them. Re: [RollTideFan] NCAA's Stupidty continues...
Dogs fans show heart, but . . . NCAA won't let them pay for dad's trip to game By CHIP TOWERS The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 08/11/05 ATHENS — A group of Georgia football fans took up a collection to pay for a Boise State player's father to fly from Baghdad to see his son play against the Bulldogs in Athens. But the NCAA rule book got in the way. Dan Miller, father of Broncos sophomore guard Tad Miller, is a retired police lieutenant who is training Iraqi police officers. When Sam Hendrix of Signal Mountain, Tenn. — suthndawg to his fellow Georgia fans on the Dawgvent, an Internet message board — read a story in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the Millers, he started an online movement to raise the $2,700 it will cost Dad to make it to Sanford Stadium to see his son play in the home opener Sept. Yet somebody in Mobile with all kinds of ties to UcheaT can send cash to Tee Martin and Roy Adams can blab all over the place about money he's provided to kids from other schools and they're not considered boosters NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent did not have an immediate response to questions about the situation Wednesday. [RollTideFan] Tired Of Being On Welfare
A guy walks into the local welfare office, marches straight up to the counter and says, Hi... You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job. The social worker behind the counter says, Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur/bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter. You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges. You'll have a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is $200,000 a year. The guy says, You're bullshittin' me! Re: [RollTideFan] Tickets
Alabama football ticket shipments delayed For Alabama football fans, the anxious wait for their season football tickets to arrive has just become a few days longer. Word came late Thursday that all University of Alabama season tickets, originally to be shipped on Friday, August 12, would be delayed a few days. ÂLate Thursday afternoon, we were informed by our ticket printing company in Arkansas that our season ticket shipments were being delayed, said Rhoda Vaughn, athletic ticket manager. ÂFor weeks, weÂve been telling our customers that August 12th would be the ship date, and until Thursday afternoon, we had no reason to doubt that. Needless to say, we were very disappointed with the news. Vaughn added that similar calls from the Arkansas ticket printing company were made to several ticket offices across the country, including at least five schools from the Southeastern Conference. ÂItÂs certainly no consolation, but several schools were given the same news regarding their season tickets, Vaughn said. ÂObviously, weÂll be following up with our ticket printing company to identify and address these issues. United Parcel Service (UPS), which is contracted by the Athletic Ticket Office to ship the season tickets, is also contracted to ship road game tickets. ÂUnlike our season tickets, which are shipped from our ticket printing company in Arkansas, our road game tickets are shipped from our offices here on campus, and theyÂre all ready to go, Vaughn said. ÂHowever, so that the receipt of season tickets and road game tickets can be simultaneous, we will hold the road game ticket shipments for a few days until weÂre informed of a new ship date of the season tickets. Once we get a firm ship date, weÂll then release the road game ticket shipment so they can enter the UPS system at the same time and hopefully be delivered to our customers at the same time. Likewise, UPS is contracted to ship most of the TIDE PRIDE amenities packages, while some are mailed through the United States Postal Service. ÂThe amenities packages that are scheduled to be shipped by UPS are ready to go, said Tommy Ford, director of TIDE PRIDE, Âbut weÂre holding them until we hear word on the season ticket shipment. It has always been our preference, as well as UPSÂs, for the amenities and the tickets to go out and be delivered at the same time. WeÂll also delay any amenities packages that are scheduled to be mailed through the Post Office. Anyone who ordered Alabama single game tickets will be receiving them earlier via the United States Postal Service. ÂOur single game tickets had already been taken to the Post Office and were already in the mail system, Vaughn said. ÂThe mailing of those could not be delayed, so theyÂll be delivered earlier than the other items. Vaughn said that the Ticket Office hopes to hear by Monday when the season tickets will be shipped. ÂDespite the delay, season tickets will arrive to our customers in plenty of time for our home opener on September 3rd. When your tickets are shipped, you will receive an email shipping notification. This notification will include your tracking number link which will allow you to easily track your package. -Original Message- From: Joe Goodson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Aug 12, 2005 9:42 PM To: RollTideFan - University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List RTF@rolltidefan.net Subject: Re: [RollTideFan] Tickets I'll take any tickets for games that anyone can't attend. [RollTideFan] FW: I Love My Job!!
-Original Message- *From:* Connie Powers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] *Sent:* Friday, August 05, 2005 10:42 PM *To:* Nance, Bobby *Cc:* Bray, Gail; Day, Glenda; Bryan, Karl; Watts, Kerry; Mom; Todd; Motley, Cindy; Daddy; Dan; Dwight; Eddie *Subject:* I Love My Job!! I love My Job! This is even funnier when you realize it's real! The next time you have a bad day at work... think of this guy. Rob is a commercial saturation diver for Global Divers in Louisiana. He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs. Below is an e-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to radio station 103.2 FM in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, which was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, this story won. Hi Sue: Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wet suit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi. Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the image was done. In agony I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically. Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two days because my butt was swollen shut. So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your butt. Now repeat to yourself, I love my job, I love my job, I love my job Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://us.rd.yahoo.com/evt=34442/*http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! [RollTideFan] Wrong fight?
My Note: I dont agree with this editorial, not even a small bit. But it is interesting reading. Wrong fight Our position: In trying to protect its fighting Indian mascot, FSU is off base. Posted August 9, 2005 E-mail this article Printer friendly version Most e-mailed articles Florida State University is fighting the wrong fight in trying to keep its Seminole mascot that many American Indians find offensive. Ideally, the institution and its fans will recognize that before embarking on an expensive and embarrassing court battle. FSU's fans consider Chief Osceola leading the Seminoles onto the football field and sticking a flaming spear into the turf a treasured tradition. But American Indians have complained for years about the stereotypes portrayed at FSU and on other college campuses. Dozens of schools have listened to the concerns and changed their mascots out of respect to those who complained, while FSU and 17 other schools have not. The NCAA Executive Committee last week responded by banning schools that display hostile or abusive mascots from playing in championship tournaments, affecting all sports but football. FSU President T.K. Wetherell not surprisingly took issue with this, arguing that the Seminoles mascot is a tribute to the fighting spirit of the Florida Seminole. But Mr. Wetherell can't escape the fact that, intended or not, the images of Osceola in war paint and thousands of fans doing the Seminole Chop portray American Indians as savages. In his anger, Mr. Wetherell vowed to sue the NCAA. That would be a mistake, sending the message that FSU is willing to fight to the end for the right to offend people. It is a stand no respected institution of higher learning should take. An even bigger mistake would be to portray such a lawsuit as a battle against political correctness. The step taken by the NCAA is not an attempt to kowtow to interest groups. This is a recognition by the organization that these images -- historically accurate or not -- offend many of those whose cultures are being portrayed. Presumably Mr. Wetherell would not support calling FSU's teams the Pickaninnies and starting each game with students in blackface tap-dancing out to the 50-yard-line for a spirited rendition of Camp Town Races. Times change. Just as black men resent being called boy and adult women wince at being referred to as girls, American Indians object to terms like the Braves, Savages and Redmen. Why? Because demeaning terms justify and encourage subtle discrimination against individuals in the group. It perpetuates prejudice and keeps people in those groups on society's lower rung. FSU's defense that the Seminole Tribe of Florida has voted to endorse the use of the symbols by FSU really serves only to bolster the NCAA's argument. The leaders of the larger Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma -- where the United States relocated Seminoles they could find after fighting three wars -- cheered the NCAA decision. That only shows that FSU and others can't pick which Seminoles they want to listen to. FSU should listen to the concerns of American Indians and remove the offensive images. http://www.the-sandbox.org Judge not the horse by his saddle. - Chinese Proverb ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! [RollTideFan] Bush criticizes NCAA decision that affects FSU
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2130079 Bush criticizes NCAA decision that affects FSU Associated Press TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush criticized NCAA officials Tuesday for their decision to penalize Florida State University for using an American Indian nickname and symbols. The governor said the Seminole Tribe of Florida supports the school's use of its name and NCAA officials had insulted the university and Seminole Indians by calling the nickname hostile and abusive. I think they insult those people by telling them, 'No, no, you're not smart enough to understand this. You should be feeling really horrible about this.' It's ridiculous, Bush said. An NCAA official previously said other Seminole tribes were opposed to the use of the name. On Tuesday, NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said officials believe their decision was made on sound legal ground. We recognize this is an emotional issue in Florida, and in other parts of the country there are people who feel just as strongly being opposed, Williams said. The university has until Feb. 1 to make a formal appeal to the NCAA executive committee. Eighteen schools have an American Indian logo or mascot that will be prohibited by the NCAA during postseason events, starting in February. The nicknames will not be allowed on team uniforms and mascots will not be allowed to perform at games, the NCAA announced Friday. Cheerleaders and band members also will be barred from using American Indian nicknames or logos beginning in 2008. Attorney Barry Richard has agreed to represent the school in its case against the NCAA, Florida State President T.K. Wetherell said. Richard successfully led the legal challenge on behalf of President Bush during the 2000 election recount in Florida. If you have the Seminole Tribe and Gov. Bush on your side, how can you go wrong? said Florida State Vice President Lee Hinkle. Bush said the NCAA must have better things to do than sit around worrying about the nicknames adopted by its member institutions. How politically correct can we get? Bush asked. The folks that make these decisions need to get out more often. -- Rick ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! After a while, he finds himself in a very high class neighborhood, big stately residences, no pubs, no stores, no restaurants, and worst of all, NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. He really, really had to go, after all those stouts. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the adjacent buildings, and decides to use the wall to solve his problem. As he unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a London Bobby, who says, I say sir. I'm very sorry Officer, replies the American, but I really, really HAVE TO GO, and I can't find a public restroom. Ah yes, says the Bobby, just follow me sir. He leads him to a back delivery alley, then along a wall to a gate, which he opens. In there, points the Bobby. Whiz away, sir, anywhere you want. The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen, manicured grass lawns, statues, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom. Since he has the cop's blessing, he unburdens himself and is greatly relieved. As he goes back through the gate, he says to the Bobby, that was really decent of you. Is that what you call 'British Hospitality'? No sir, replies the Bobby, that is what we call the French Embassy. ---End Message--- ---End Message--- ___ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics E-mail Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan - Wear a Cup! http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1123332310139870.xmlcoll=3 Former professional ball player arrested in raid Saturday, August 06, 2005 By JEFF AMY Staff Reporter Former professional football player Ralph Lahquan Staten was arrested early Friday by Mobile County sheriff's deputies on charges of cocaine trafficking and possession of marijuana. Staten, 30, was arrested after deputies raided a trailer in a mobile home park at 5530 Natchez Highway in Wilmer. Deputies found powdered and crack cocaine totaling a little more than two ounces and a small amount of marijuana, according to Christina Bowersox, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department. Deputies also seized a handgun and two vehicles. Staten was an all-state player at Mary G. Montgomery High School before signing as a linebacker with the University of Alabama in 1993. Staten was suspended by coach Gene Stallings for breaking team rules, but was also chosen as an all-SEC player. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL draft and played two seasons. After being released, he played with the Mobile Seagulls of the Indoor Professional Football League and from 2000 to 2002 in the Canadian Football League. While a member of the Ravens, Staten was arrested when a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun was found in his car after he failed to negotiate a curve and struck a guardrail. In a previous incident, Staten was charged with drunken driving when his car collided with another in Baltimore County. Staten was arrested on similar drug charges in a 2004 traffic stop but was never prosecuted, according to court records. He was being held in Mobile County Metro Jail Friday pending a Monday bond hearing. Bowersox said deputies were investigating to see whether other people are involved. __ Do You Yahoo!? . Schools that have already been awarded NCAA championships won't have their hosting sites revoked but must take reasonable steps to cover up offending logos, which can be found anywhere from a painted sign on the centerfield scoreboard to the grass on a soccer field. Florida State is not scheduled to host any postseason events. But the school has been awarded baseball regionals on an almost annual basis and may now have hosted its last this spring. The NCAA is also giving schools until Aug. 1, 2008, to remove offending references on their mascots, cheerleaders, dance teams, band uniforms and paraphernalia during championship competition. Wetherell vowed the references wouldn't be removed altogether. This university will forever be associated with the 'unconquered' spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Southeastern Oklahoma State SAVAGES TALLAHASSEE -- The NCAA on Friday took its strongest stance yet against American Indian mascots and imagery, announcing that 18 schools -- including Florida State -- cannot host postseason competition as long as their current names and logos are in place. They must also cover up or remove references to those logos when traveling to NCAA championships. The decision, which stunned Florida State officials, came out of Thursday's annual meeting of the NCAA's Executive Committee and Division I board of directors. The NCAA had asked 30 schools this spring to submit reports on whether their mascots, team names and pageantry violated the association's principles of cultural diversity. When the issue finally reached the Executive Committee on Thursday, few expected such a decisive policy after years of the NCAA's hands-off approach to mascots. NCAA President Myles Brand singled out 18 schools as having prima facie hostile and abusive symbols, and advocates praised that list for including what they consider the biggest offenders, such as Florida State, Illinois, Utah and North Dakota. The executive committee did not specify exactly what would be considered hostile and abusive. That definition may take years to evolve, with Florida State one of the first schools Friday to threaten a lawsuit. Executive Committee Chairman Walter Harrison, however, already has set the NCAA's sights on details as small as the spear on a Seminoles helmet. An institution may adopt whatever mascots it wishes; that's an institutional matter that involves their integrity and autonomy as an institution, said Harrison, president of the University of Hartford, on a conference call. But as a national association, we believe that mascots, nicknames or images deemed hostile or abusive in terms of race, ethnicity or national origin should not be visible at the championship events that we control. The NCAA does not control the college football bowl system, meaning the new policy may have limited effect on Division I football. But Harrison said he hoped the Bowl Championship Series would follow the same procedures. Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg, currently chair of the BCS, was not prepared to comment Friday. FSU President T.K. Wetherell said in a statement that he intends to pursue all legal avenues to overturn the decision, and he pointed to a resolution passed June 17 by the Seminole Tribe of Florida embracing the university's use of the Seminole name and imagery. That the NCAA would now label our close bond with the Seminole people as culturally 'hostile and abusive' is both outrageous and insulting, Wetherell said. The rules as we understand them would have us cover the Seminole name and symbol as if we were embarrassed, and any committee that would think that is a proper and respectful treatment of Native Americans should be ashamed. The new policy will take effect in February -- beginning, for example, with next year's NCAA basketball tournament -- to allow schools a chance to complain. But both Harrison and Brand stressed that the decision was four years in the making. Harrison was also confident it would stand up in court. While many advocacy groups were celebrating the decision Friday, the Seminole Tribe of Florida joined Florida State in its anger. You have non-natives making a decision about native names, said Max Osceola, a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida's tribal council. Maybe it took them four years, but it's been a lifetime we've been known as the Seminoles. The NCAA took into consideration the resolution the Seminole Tribe of Florida passed June 17. But the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma has

[RollTideFan] Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn
nbc13.com Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn POSTED: 2:09 pm CDT August 4, 2005 FLORENCE, Ala. -- A century-old two-story house owned by one of Alabama's former star football players sustained heavy damage during a fire in the city's historic district. Van Tiffin became a part of Crimson Tide folklore when his last-second, 52-yard field goal defeated rival Auburn in 1985. He stood helplessly yesterday afternoon as he watched firefighters put out the fire. Tiffin said he and his wife bought the home several months ago and had been renovating it. The blaze was reported to shortly before noon and according to firefighters the home is salvageable. An investigator said the fire apparently started as roofers were welding the portion of the roof that covers the porch to the roof's sloped portion. No one was in the house when the fire started. One firefighter was treated for apparent heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
