Re: [RollTideFan] What is up with the baseball team
They did try to make a comeback last night. They were down 6-0 until the 8th inning & tried to rally. Allen Rice made a bad error earlier in the game which cost them 2 runs, but we still cannot hit consistently. We did at least make them use 3 pitchers & we only used one. As I recall, we gave up 2 homers. It's pretty sad though, that our best pitcher is a true freshman & this was his second Friday night start. He's obviously pretty nervous, but he's still doing a pretty good job. We cannot afford to make errors when we cannot hit the ball. We got lucky a couple of times or the score would not have been as close as it was. We are badly missing our power hitters of previous years. But, we're very very young at a lot of positions & every catcher we have is injured. Past balls last night hurt us also. - Original Message - From: "Rick McMahan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "RollTideFan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Bama-Fans" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, April 10, 2004 10:26 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] What is up with the baseball team > A home loss to the commode doors last night puts the Tide at 3-7 in the > SEC. I am not talking about the season each team has had as the reasons for why I think UF will be more difficult. I simply believe Bama matches up better against MSU. For some reason we cannot seem to handle UF. I don't really know what it is, I just know that every time we see them in the Tourney or regular season we usually end up with an L. It is a valid comparison whether you are aware of it or not. The coaches poll is included in the BCS formula. I don't think you are going to find a lot of people who would support the idea if making the coaches poll the ONLY criteria for choosing who plays in the national championship game of any expanded playoff, but you are certainly welcome to try. Opposing a plyoff is very simple. I don't like wimpy shit. If you don't win your games during the season, on the field, then I don't see why a coaches poll or any BCS style formula should go give you a second chance. You should have taken care of business during the season, not depend a second wimpy-ass chance in a playoff. The BCS system works. Last year it matched the two undefeateds in the championship game and OSU won it and nobody bithched or moaned. This year, all 117 teams entered the season with the chance to run the table and nobody had what it takes to do it. So, in years like this, or if there were 3 legitimate undefeateds, then everybody starts screaming for a playoff that lets a bunch of teams that have absolutely no right, due to their on the field performance during the season, the opportunity to have a wimpy-ass second chance. The answer, in my opinion, is a "play-in," meaning that if you have teams at #2 and #3 in the BCS formula that are within a reasonable distance of each other, say 1.5 points, and have identical loss records, then they would play a game the week following the conference chamionships and the winner of that game would go to the championship game vs. #1 and the loser would be #3 and play in the #3 spot in the BCS formula. This way, in years that it is not needed, there is no play-in game and no crappy ass team that didn't take care of business during the year gets an opportunity they don't deserve. In years like this year, situations like the one we have now are avoided "on the field." __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" Sure, someone would have to decide what teams got into a playoff, but let the coaches do it, they know more about it than the computers or sportswriting hacks. Dude! You just contradicted the hell out of yourself! How do you think they determine who gets into the basketball tourney? The RPI rating (a computer rating system that nobody really knows how works) and the ranking in the human polls are the two factors that a bunch of faceless people called "the NCAA tournament Selection Committe" use to decide who does and who does not get the opportunity to try to win six more games after the actual season is over. You criticise computers and "sports writing hacks" yet that is precisely who/what would stand at the gates of any playoff and deem worthiness of admission. Championships should indeed be won on the field which is exactly the argument AGAINST playoffs. A 2 or 3 loss team has absolutely no right whatsoever to whine about not being allowed to play for any title because you know what, they didn't win it on the field. They didn't take care of business. Screw them! They should have won their friggin' games during the season and the point would be moot. Screw LSU, USC and Oklahoma. One of them will get screwed and should. - Oklahoma had a chance to waltz into the Sugar bowl and blew by losing to a 3 loss KSU team. - LSU had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar Bowl and blew it by losing to Florida. - USC had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar Bowl and blew it by losing to Cal. RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...
The "legitimate" champion argument is hogwash. It does not produce a "legitimate" SEASON champion. The NCAA basketball tourney produces a legitimate tournament champion which means that it totally throws out the season and starts over. The team that can put 6 wins together at the END of the season is crowned champion and the season itself is relegated to second fiddle. B-ball season sucks. Hell, it's been going on for 3 weeks and most of us could care less because we don't start getting interested until the end of the season. I hate basketball season and I don't want football season to end up the same way. Words like "legitimate" and "mythical" are nice little sound bites, but that's all they all they are and carry no weight. Just say "no" to playoffs. >-Original Message- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Behalf Of Joe Goodson >Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 10:43 AM >To: RollTideFan-The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List >Subject: Re: [RollTideFan] What the hell... > > >Screw the bowl tradition. Looks like they got their butts whupped. Kansas was better prepared. Someone forgot to tell Kansas State to lay down and Oklahoma wasn't ready. I wonder what this will do to the BCS? RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...
Now you're talking! I'm a traditionalist. A playoff takes the emphasis totally away from the season and 1 or 2 losses during the season mean absolutely NOTHING anymore because all that matters is getting into the playoffs, just like basketball season now, which abso-fucking-lutely sucks. The tournament is semi-fun, but the season is almost a meaningless warm-up to the tourney. Scrap the BCS, go back to the old bowl system where the SEC champ goes to the Sugar bowl and we all get to argue forever about who the national champ is, not some silly tourney champion where a 2 or 3-loss team can get hot and beat an undefeated team, then get named "NCAA Playoff Champion" but we would all know that they got their asses whipped during the season and aren't the national champs at all, but instead just a team that got hot at the end of the season, like oh say, maybe um KANSAS FUCKING STATE. Nice post. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Terry Pellman Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2003 4:42 PM To: Pat Smoot; RollTideFan-The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Subject: Re: [RollTideFan] What... I'll jump in with a few thoughts I've seen two sides of this sordid mess...both revolving around *when* it happened. One side, "It was too long ago." The other, "There really isn't a such thing as the Statue of Limitations with the NCAA." Both are right and wrong. So, here's my opinion in a big nut shell. It's a given the NCAA is investigating the B-ball program. It's a given it revolves around trying to pay recruits to attend Auburn or actually paying recruits that are at Auburn. The question is, are these payments coming from Boosters. And then, which boosters, right? If the first scenario is found to be true, the NCAA may decide (emphasis on MAY ) to see if it's an ongoing occurance. In that case, *if* they decide to see if it is, the entire mess becomes an open book. That book not only covers the current situation with the B-ball program, but past seasons as well. If these boosters are also boosters of the football program, this book has another chapter in it. It doesn't matter when this happened, but if they can say boosters were paying recruits 10 years ago and they are still doing it today they'll use those past payments as evidence against the current ones to show repeat offenses. If that happens...Katy, bar the door! If you doubt that, only look as far as Kenny Smith being brought up in our investigation that they'll (NCAA) do it. We have all heard the money he received wasn't from an Alabama booster. But, that a different thread in itself right. Who knows? Personally, I tire of hearing about the NCAA at every turn no matter if it's Alabama, the SEC, where ever. However, that will not dampen my curiousity on "what they'll do this time." Lord knows, it's never a repeat performance. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!" From: "Devonna Snuggs" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > no talk of the barners troubles around here?? fwiw, here's a copy someone sent to me of a supposed TI post. I'll believe it when I see it. kurt >From NCAA BY-LAWS 32.6.3 Statute of Limitations Allegations included in notice of allegations shall be limited to possible violations occurring not earlier than four years before the date the notice of inquiry is forwarded to the institution or the date the institution notifies (or, if earlier, should have notified) the enforcement staff of its inquiries into the matter. However, the following shall not be subject to the four-year limitation: (Revised: 10/12/94, 4/24/03) (a) Allegations involving violations affecting the eligibility of a current student-athlete; (b) Allegations in a case in which information is developed to indicate a pattern of willful violations on the part of the institution or individual involved, which began before but continued into the four- year period; and (c) Allegations that indicate a blatant disregard for the Association's fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic or ethical-conduct regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the occurrence of the violation. In such cases, the enforcement staff shall have a one-year period after the date information concerning the matter becomes available to the NCAA to investigate and submit to the institution an official inquiry concerning the matter. I have some news for you Auburn lurkers. The BAD NEWS: This time, it is riding on a Shetland pony. If you learned just one tiney thing from the NCAA case just leveled on Alabama, remember this; the NCAA DETESTS illegal booster activity. They view that as one of the most egregious sins. Got another news flash for you. When Board of Trustee members are involved, they shut down your program. Don't believe me? Go to Dallas, Texas and ask the good folks at SMU what THEY did to merit the Death Penalty. Hint - the guys in upper management were involved. So, what do YOU have to look forward to? >From the 1993 Summary report: Violation Summary: EXTRA BENEFITS: athletics representatives provided at least $4,000 in cash and merchandise; assistant coach provided $500; administrative assistant provided several thousand dollars in cash payments; athletics representative approved a $9,200 and several other unsecured loans based upon future earnings as professional athletes; student-athletes allowed to enroll with oustanding accounts with the university. LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL. UNETHICAL CONDUCT. ERRONEOUS CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE. >From the 1993 Full Report: B. Auburn University shall be subject to the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 19.5.2.3 concerning repeat violators for a five-year period beginning on the effective date of the penalties in this case. The effective date for the purpose of this action shall be the date the 15-day appeal period expires or the date the institution notifies the executive director that it will not appeal, whichever is earlier, or, in the event of an appeal, the date established by the Infractions Appeals Committee. I've got new for you Auburn fans: You are at risk for a death penalty case. Boosters, along with Board of Trustee members, giving money to coaches for an illegal slush fund to pay players. And this was occuring during the time you were under the "repeat violator" window. The statement in Rule 36.2.3 (c) that says a blatant disregard for the Association's fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic or ethical-conduct regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the occurrence of the violation. This is as blatant as it gets. All you Aubs who were snickering at Ronnie Cottrell's suit, you think it is funny now? He's been accusing them of playing favorites and going after Alabama and it's coaches in a vendetta. Well guess what? You have provided the NCAA the P-E-R-F-E-C-T way to show they are not biased and to help blunt the impact his suit will have on their activities. Ex-coach. Tape. Boosters. Board Members. I don't know whether the NCAA will have mercy on you. You better pray that they do. If not, those dead eagles are just the preview of coming attractions. __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List "Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!"
