[Rails] Survey: 2016 Rails hosting community survey
Hi everyone! Hope you're having an awesome day. As you might have seen DHH tweeted recently <https://twitter.com/dhh/status/715852121355259904>, the 2016 Ruby on Rails Hosting survey <http://rails-hosting.com/> is now open until May 8th. Re: [Rails] Re: Use of :include option in find query
The queries will likely be the same.. but you should check to see if it loaded the company details _before_ you called @user.company. You might try the following from script/console while tailing the log file in another terminal. ruby script/console => User.find(2) ... check the log/development.log => User.find(2, :include => :company) check log/development.log Good luck! [Rails] Re: default values for new table entry
You can do this in the controller, but I'd advise against this. Why? Business logic is best located and/or managed by the model. The easiest way to do this would be to modify the database column to set a default value, which Active Record will read when it looks at the table structure and use this to set default values. For example, if you had a migration for a new field, you could do the following: add_column :teams, :active, :boolean, :default => false If we had a Team model, when we did Team.new, we'd see that there would be a default value already set for the active attribute. As mentioned, this would be the simplest method and would keep the business logic located in the realm of the model. Keep controller code short and sweet. Hope this helps! Look in Preferences > Advanced > Folder References. There is a sexy regular expression for "Folder Pattern"... which you can modify to include the directories you want to ignore. Why would you want to do this in the controller (not through user input?) If it's business logic, it belongs in the model. You could do something like this in the Product model with callbacks. class Product < ActiveRecord::base ... before_save :set_title_my_way protected def set_title_my_way self.title = "this is my title..." end end Then when you do an @product.update_attributes(...) in your controller, it'll run this before it saves overriding anything passed in the parameters. It's generally bad-mojo to modify params during the request. Additionally, if with ActiveRecord callbacks you can do this before create, update, or save (depending on how you want to approach this.) Learn more about callbacks here: * http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Callbacks.html Hope this helps! [Rails] Re: how do I add a new font for my RoR website (hosted on linux, developed on Mac) ????
Greg, You might want to read up a bit more on how fonts are used on the web. If you declare specific fonts to be used in your CSS, it only tells the browser to try and use it. If the person browsing the site/application doesn't have the font specific installed on their application, then they it'll default to a font it does have. Here is some information that explains it. * http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/fonts.html#q1 Hope that helps.. There are some install scripts that can be run when the plugin includes them. (for example, setting up some config files for you) For example, look at the following plugin (one our customers use for deployment for http://railsboxcar.com/ ) http://github.com/planetargon/boxcar-conductor/tree/master You'll see in the README that there is a command to run script/runner install.rb if you're doing manually. So, if you are doing it manually, make sure to check for an install.rb (or uninstall if you're removing a plugin) Cheers, Robby -- Robby Russell Chief Evangelist, Partner PLANET ARGON, LLC design // development // hosting w/Ruby on Rails http://www.planetargon.com/ http://www.robbyonrails.com/ aim: planetargon +1 503 445 2457 +1 877 55 ARGON [toll free] +1 815 642 4068 [fax] --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Camel-case should only be used by class/module definitions and references. @booked_days is the convention that Rails encourages. This might be something that you've decided based on a personal or team preference, but in case you're not attached to it, following Rails conventions will make your life and anybody else that later works on a project.. a little easier. :-) Cheers, Robby -- Robby Russell Chief Evangelist, Partner PLANET ARGON, LLC design // development // hosting w/Ruby on Rails http://www.planetargon.com/ http://www.robbyonrails.com/ aim: planetargon +1 503 445 2457 +1 877 55 ARGON [toll free] +1 815 642 4068 [fax] --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Is there a way to define "Menu[1..n], Salad [1..m], Dessert > [1..i] for each day in an elegant way? Hi there, Honestly, one of the best ways for you to map out your data model is to break down each element in your menu (assuming you have an existing physical one) to get a clear picture. What does a Menu consist of? What does a Menu Item consist? Are there different types of menu items? Does each menu item have a name, description, and price? Perhaps I helped you out a bit there, but that's really the best place to start. Don't think about the technical relationships until you answer those types of questions. While doing it, you'll see that your data model will evolve organically. Another tip, start with the easiest thing to model, which my guess would be the Menu itself (sans-menu items). You can have an empty Menu with your catering business information to start (name of business, address, etc..). Then think about what needs to go inside of it and begin to evolve your data model over time. This is also how you might consider developing the application. Build it in small pieces and evolve it as you go. This is one of the things that Rails encourages you to do. Keep it simple!
