actually I followed Jason's suggestion, namely I installed NTFS-3G on
my linux box and then converted the FAT32 partition to NTFS and
everything worked out fine (well, at least after downloading the 2GB
image from the sage web site since my zip file was prolly corrupted),
so it's too late for me to test the FAT32 'compatibility'.
I'll bother you in the future with new bugs then :-)
Cheers,
 Roberto

Hi,

sage-2.8.13 -- just released today -- which is available here as a vmware image

 http://sagemath.org/SAGEbin/vmware/

has been modified so that all files are < 2GB. So you might
want to try it out and see if it works on your system, and report
back either way. Thanks!

William

Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) has write-access to NTFS partitions using
NTFS-3G (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ ). The driver is stable now and
write-access is enabled by default. I've used it to write to a Windows
2000 NTFS partition and everything worked fine.

Thanks,

Jason

It unzips fine for me under Linux, so I don't think the file is corrupted.
Also, the fact that so many people have used it successfully is a
further indication that it isn't corrupted.

Now that I'm back I will hopefully be able to make a new sage-vmware with disks
split at 2gb soon.

I certainly understand!

Hi all,
thanks a lot for you quick replies, unfortunately I myself have been
quite busy and could write back only today.

I had thought about that indeed but then I tried to unzip the file
under linux (I use reiserfs) and got the very same problem, so I
suspect it is some odd problem of the zip file.

BTW, I know NTFS is better than FAT32 but I like to be able to write
on my winblows partition from linux and AFAIK there's no way to do
that with NTFS :-(

Thanks a lot again for your great work,
 Roberto

This is ticket #1157 - see http://sagetrac.org/sage_trac/ticket/1157

William: you can convert the image using vdiskmanager. There is even a
GUI for OSX to do that - see http://communities.vmware.com/message/674493
- that way I don't have to upload the images to sagemath. I am not
sure why I got this ticket assigned, but now the ball is back in your
court ;)

Cheers,

Michael

That is the problem, as the file is 2.2GB.

-rw--- 1 sage sage 2.2G 2007-11-07 09:52 Ubuntu.vmdk

I think it's supposed to be easy (and sometimes very desirable)
to convert a filesystem in Windows from FAT32 to NTFS. This
will make the filesystem journaled, which means the person won't
see the "checking the file system" blue screen whenever Windows
crashes and reboots.

That said -- vmware has an option to split virtual disks into files
that are all < 2GB. I will definitely fix the vmware machine when
i get back to Seattle to only include files that are < 2GB. However,
this will have to wait about a week.

Anyway, many thanks for reporting this problem!

You should try 7zip (which is open source) or a trial edition of
Winzip. Another, more likely possibility is that you have a FAT32
formatted drive which can limit file size to 2GB.

That is no surprise, after all the are bits of the image missing.

I might be that you have a corrupted download, also. I would be great
if William could post some md5sum, sha sums of the images.
